Abstract:In this paper, we show how the finite formulation of QFT based on Callan-Symanzik equations can be generalised to the case of non-renormalizable theories. We derive an equation for effective action for an arbitrary single scalar field theory, allowing us to perform computations without running in intermediate divergencies. We illustrate the method with the use of $\lambda\phi^4 + \phi^6/M^2$ theory by the explicit (and fully finite) calculations of the effective potential as well as two-, four- and six-point correlation functions at one loop level and demonstrate that no quantum corrections to scalar mass $m^2$, depending on $M^2$-scale, are generated.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to extend the finite - formulation method in quantum field theory (QFT) to non - renormalizable theories. Specifically, the authors show how to deal with the effective action of any single - scalar - field theory by generalizing the Callan - Symanzik (CS) equation and are able to perform calculations without encountering intermediate divergences. They use a specific non - renormalizable theory containing the terms λϕ⁴+ ϕ⁶/M², and by explicitly calculating the effective potential and the one - loop corrections of the two - point, four - point and six - point correlation functions, they prove the effectiveness of their method in non - renormalizable theories. ### Main contributions of the paper 1. **Generalization of the CS equation**: The authors derive a new generalized CS equation, which can generate all possible n - point correlation functions and the Callan - Symanzik equations of the effective potential through the effective action. 2. **Explicit calculation**: In a specific non - renormalizable theory, the authors perform explicit calculations of the one - loop corrections of the effective potential and correlation functions, proving that no divergences occur during the calculation. 3. **Multi - scale problem**: The paper discusses the influence of heavy physics on the m² - order physics when there are two different energy scales (the mass m of the scalar and the larger energy scale M related to the high - dimensional operator) in non - renormalizable theories. The results show that heavy physics does not affect the m² - order physics, so no fine - tuning is required. 4. **Naturalness problem**: The authors believe that the fine - tuning and naturalness problems caused by the commonly used QFT formalism based on divergent Feynman diagrams and multiplicative renormalization are not real physical challenges, but problems of the formalism itself. ### Specific methods - **Generalized CS equation**: By introducing a new functional Γeff(θ, ϕ₀), the authors derive a unified generalized CS equation that can handle both renormalizable and non - renormalizable theories. - **θ - operation**: The θ - operation is used to split the propagator so that it converges in the high - energy case. By applying the θ - operation multiple times, it can be ensured that all relevant diagrams are finite. - **Calculation of the effective potential and correlation functions**: The authors use the generalized CS equation and the θ - operation to explicitly calculate the one - loop - corrected effective potential and correlation functions, verifying the effectiveness of the method. ### Conclusion The paper shows how to generalize the finite - formulation method from renormalizable theories to non - renormalizable theories, and verifies the effectiveness of the method through specific calculations. This result provides a new, divergence - free method for dealing with non - renormalizable theories, which is helpful for further understanding the naturalness problem and the multi - scale problem in QFT.
