Abstract:Abdus Salam was a true master of 20th Century Theoretical Physics. Not only was he a pioneer of the Standard Model (for which he shared the Nobel Prize with S. Glashow and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://S.Weinberg" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>), but he also (co)authored many other outstanding contributions to the field of Fundamental Interactions and their unification. In particular, he was a major contributor to the development of supersymmetric theories, where he also coined the word "Supersymmetry" (replacing the earlier "Supergauges" drawn from String Theory). He also introduced the basic concept of "Superspace" and the notion of "Goldstone Fermion"(Goldstino). These concepts proved instrumental for the exploration of the ultraviolet properties and for the study of spontaneously broken phases of super Yang-Mills theories and Supergravity. They continue to play a key role in current developments in Early-Universe Cosmology. In this contribution we review models of inflation based on Supergravity with spontaneously broken local supersymmetry, with emphasis on the role of nilpotent superfields to describe a de Sitter phase of our Universe.

Nonlinear realisation approach to topologically massive supergravity

Abstract:We develop a nonlinear realisation approach to topologically massive supergravity in three dimensions, with and without a cosmological term. It is a natural generalisation of a similar construction for ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity in four dimensions, which was recently proposed by one of us. At the heart of both formulations is the nonlinear realisation approach to gravity which was given by Volkov and Soroka fifty years ago in the context of spontaneously broken local supersymmetry. In our setting, the action for cosmological topologically massive supergravity is invariant under two different local supersymmetries. One of them acts on the Goldstino, while the other supersymmetry leaves the Goldstino invariant. The former can be used to gauge away the Goldstino, and then the resulting action coincides with that given in the literature.

Cosmology in nonlocal gravity

Abstract:In this chapter we review the recent developments of realizing $R^2$-like inflation in the framework of a most general UV nonlocal extension of Einstein's general theory of relativity (GR). It is a well-motivated robust approach towards quantum gravity. In the past decades, nonlocal gravitational theories which are quadratic in curvature have been understood to be ghost-free and super-renormalizable around maximally symmetric spacetimes. However, in the context of early Universe cosmology we show that one must go beyond the quadratic curvature nonlocal gravity in order to achieve a consistent ghost-free framework of Universe evolution from quasi de Sitter to Minkowski spacetime. In this regard, we discuss a construction of a most general nonlocal gravity action that leads to $R^2$-like inflation and discuss the corresponding observational predictions for the scalar and tensor spectral tilts, tensor-to-scalar ratio, and the primordial non-Gaussianities. We present an analysis of how the nonlocal inflationary cosmology goes beyond the established notions of effective field theories of inflation. Finally, we comment on some open questions and prospects of higher curvature nonlocal gravity on its way of achieving the UV completion.

Supergravity Contributions to Inflation in models with non-minimal coupling to gravity

Abstract:This paper provides a systematic study of supergravity contributions relevant for inflationary model building in Jordan frame supergravity. In this framework, canonical kinetic terms in the Jordan frame result in the separation of the Jordan frame scalar potential into a tree-level term and a supergravity contribution, which is potentially dangerous for sustaining inflation. We show that if the vacuum energy necessary for driving inflation originates dominantly from the F-term of an auxiliary field (i.e. not the inflaton), the supergravity corrections to the Jordan frame scalar potential are generically suppressed. Moreover, these supergravity contributions identically vanish if the superpotential $W$ vanishes along the inflationary trajectory. On the other hand, if the F-term associated with the inflaton dominates the vacuum energy, the supergravity contributions are generically comparable to the globally supersymmetric contributions. In addition, the non-minimal coupling to gravity inherent to Jordan frame supergravity significantly impacts the inflationary model depending on the size and sign of this coupling. We discuss the phenomenology of some representative inflationary models, and point out the relation to the recently much discussed cosmological `attractor' models.

Inflation via Gravitino Condensation in Dynamically Broken Supergravity

Abstract:Gravitino-condensate-induced inflation via the super-Higgs effect is a UV-motivated scenario for both inflating the early universe and breaking local supersymmetry dynamically, entirely independent of any coupling to external matter. As an added benefit, this also removes the (as of yet unobserved) massless Goldstino associated to global supersymmetry breaking from the particle spectrum. In this review we detail the pertinent properties and outline previously hidden details of the various steps required in this context in order to make contact with current inflationary phenomenology. The class of models of SUGRA we use to exemplify our approach are minimal four-dimensional N=1 supergravity and conformal extensions thereof (with broken conformal symmetry). Therein, the gravitino condensate itself can play the role of the inflaton, however the requirement of slow-roll necessitates unnaturally large values of the wave-function renormalisation. Nevertheless, there is an alternative scenario that may provide Starobinsky-type inflation, occurring in the broken-SUGRA phase around the non-trivial minima of the gravitino-condensate effective potential. In this scenario higher curvature corrections to the effective action, crucial for the onset of an inflationary phase, arise as a result of integrating out massive quantum gravitino fields in the path integral. The latter scenario is compatible with Planck satellite phenomenology but not with BICEP2 data.

Recent Advances on Inflation

Abstract:We review recent trends on inflationary dynamics in the context of viable modified gravity theories. After providing a general overview of the inflationary paradigm emphasizing on what problems of hot Big Bang theory inflation solves, and a somewhat introductory presentation of single field inflationary theories with minimal and non-minimal couplings, we review how inflation can be realized in terms of several string motivated models of inflation, which involve Gauss-Bonnet couplings of the scalar field, higher order derivatives of the scalar field, and some subclasses of viable Horndeski theories. We also present and analyze inflation in the context of Chern-Simons theories of gravity, including various subcases and generalizations of string corrected modified gravities which also contain Chern-Simons correction terms, with the scalar field being identified with the invisible axion, which is the most viable to date dark matter candidate. We also provide a detailed account of vacuum $f(R)$ gravity inflation, and also inflation in $f(R,\phi)$ and kinetic-corrected $f(R,\phi)$ theories of gravity. In the end of the review we discuss the technique for calculating the overall effect of modified gravity on the waveform of the standard general relativistic gravitational wave form.

Abstract:Information and communication technologies are moving towards a new stage where applications will be dynamically deployed, uninstalled, updated and (re)configured. Several approaches have been followed with the goal of creating a fully automated and context-aware deployment system. Ideally, this system should be capable of handling the dynamics of this new situation, without losing sight of other factors, such as performance, security, availability or scalability. We will take some of the technologies that follow the principles of Service Oriented Architectures, SOA, as a paradigm of dynamic environments. SOA promote the breaking down of applications into sets of loosely coupled elements, called services. Services can be dynamically bound, deployed, reconfigured, uninstalled and updated. First of all, we will try to offer a broad view on the specific deployment issues that arise in these environments. Later on, we will present our approach to the problem. One of the essential points that has to be tackled to develop an automated deployment engine will be to have enough information to carry out tasks without human intervention. In the article we will focus on the format and contents of deployment descriptors. Additionally, we will go into the details of the deployment framework for OSGi enabled gateways that has been developed by our research group. Finally we will give some concluding remarks and some ideas for future work

Gravitational Waves and Gravitino Mass in No-Scale Supergravity Inflation with Polonyi Term

Abstract:We study a No-Scale supergravity inflation model which has a non-minimal deformation of the Kähler potential and a Wess-Zumino superpotential extended by the inclusion of a Polonyi mass term. The non-minimal structure of the Kähler potential is responsible for an inflexion point that can lead to the production of gravitational waves at late stages of inflation, while the Polonyi term breaks supersymmetry at the end of inflation, generating a non-vanishing gravitino mass. After a thorough parameter space scan, we identify promising points for gravitational wave production. We then study the resulting gravitational wave energy density for this set of points, and we observe that the gravitational waves should be observable in the next generation of both space-based and ground-based interferometers. Finally, we show how the presence of the Polonyi term can be used to further boost the gravitational wave energy density, which is correlated with the gravitino mass.

Abstract:We give an overview of the different non-Lorentzian supergravity theories in diverse dimensions that have been constructed in recent years. After giving a detailed discussion of non-Lorentzian geometries as compared to Lorentzian geometries, we outline some of the construction methods that have been applied to obtain non-Lorentzian supergravity. Explicit results are given for non-Lorentzian supergravity theories in three and ten dimensions.

Abstract:With the invention of unified theories of strong, weak, electromagnetic and gravitational interactions, elementaryparticle physics has entered a very interesting and unusual stage of its development. The end of the 1960s saw the introduction of the Glashow-Weinberg-Salam unification of the weak and electromagnetic interactions. In 1974 came the grand unified theories of the strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions. Two years later we had supergravity, giving us the first hope of unifying all fundamental interactions, including gravitation. The beginning of the 1980s witnessed a renewal of interest in the Kaluza-Klein theories and supergravity in higher-dimensional space-time. Nowadays superstring theory is the leading candidate for the role of “theory of everything.”

Abstract:In this talk recent developments of the theory of preheating after inflation are briefly reviewed. In inflationary cosmology, the particles constituting the Universe are created after inflation due to their interaction with moving inflaton field(s) in the process of reheating. In inflationary models motivated by supergravity, both bosons and fermions are created. In the bosonic sector, the leading channel of particle production is the non-perturbative regime of parametric resonance dominated by those bosons which are created exponentially fast with the largest characteristic exponent. In the fermionic sector, the leading channel corresponds to the regime of parametric excitation of fermions, which respects Pauli blocking but differs significantly from the perturbative expectation. In supergravity we also have to consider production of gravitinos and moduli fields, which are cosmologically dangerous relics. We discuss the derivation of the gravitino equations in curved space-time with moving background scalars. We describe recent results on the production of gravitinos from preheating, which may put strong constraints on the inflationary models.

Abstract:In the present thesis, using an effective field theory point of view, we explore theories of single-field inflation where higher derivative operators become relevant, affecting in a novel way the dynamics and therefore the observations. For instance, concerning the scalar spectrum, they allow for measurable equilateral non-Gaussianity, whose amplitude can differ significantly from the predictions of other existing models. Moreover, we show that the stability and the consistency of such theories are ensured by an approximate Galileon symmetry. Indeed, being generically possible to build an invariant theory under Galileon transformations in flat space-time, it is instead well known that such a symmetry is unavoidably broken by gravity. In principle, this might ruin the nice and interesting properties of the Galileons in flat backgrounds, such as the non-renormalization theorem. However, we find that this does not happen if the Galileon invariance is broken only weakly, in a well defined sense, by a suitable coupling to gravity, providing therefore an extension of the quantum non-renormalization properties in curved space-times. Hence, besides discussing the phenomenological consequences and the observational predictions for inflation, we apply such Galileon theories to the context of the late-time acceleration of the Universe. In the last part, in order to probe non-standard primordial scenarios, they are also employed in a cosmology where the Big Bang singularity is smoothed down and the Universe emerges from a Minkowski space-time, in a well defined extension at all times of the Galilean Genesis scenario.

Abstract:We investigate a (super-)renormalizable and ghost-free theory of gravity, showing that under a natural (exponential) ansatz of the form factor and a suitable truncation it can give rise to the Starobinsky inflationary theory in cosmological frameworks, and thus offering a theoretical justification of its origin. We study the corresponding inflationary evolution and we examine the generation of curvature perturbations, adapting the f(R)-like equations in a symmetry-reduced Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric. Furthermore, we analyze how the ultraviolet regime of a simply renormalizable and unitary theory of gravity is also compatible with the Starobinsky action, and hence we show that such a theory could account for an inflationary phase of the Universe in the ultraviolet regime. Supermassive gauginos in supergravity inflation with high-scale SUSY breaking

Abstract:A model of supergravity inflation we recently proposed can produce slow roll inflation and a realistic spectrum of particles even without F-term supersymmetry breaking. Supersymmetry is broken only by a D-term induced by a recently discovered new type of Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term. Almost all supersymmetric partners of the standard model fields can get masses as high as the inflationary Hubble scale. The exception is gauginos, for which the vanishing of F-terms implies an exact cancellation that keeps their masses exactly zero. To cure this problem without spoiling the simplicity of our model we introduce a new term that further enlarges the space of supergravity effective actions. It is an F-term that, similarly to the new FI term, becomes singular in the supersymmetric limit. We show that this term can produce large gaugino masses without altering the spectrum of other states and without lowering the cutoff of the effecive theory.

Natural Double Inflation in Supergravity

Abstract:We propose a natural double inflation model in supergravity. In this model, chaotic inflation first takes place by virtue of the Nambu-Goldstone-like shift symmetry, which guarantees the absence of the exponential factor in the potential for the inflaton field. During chaotic inflation, an initial value of the second inflation (new inflation) is set. In this model, the initial value of new inflation can be adequately far from the local maximum of the potential for new inflation due to the small linear term of the inflaton in the Kähler potential. Therefore, the primordial fluctuations within the present horizon scale may be attributed to both inflations; that is, the first chaotic inflation produces the primordial fluctuations on the large cosmological scales while the second new inflation on the smaller scales. The successive decay of the inflaton for new inflation leads to a reheating temperature low enough to avoid the overproduction of gravitinos in a wide range of the gravitino mass.

Non-Lorentzian Supergravity and Kinematical Superalgebras

Abstract:In this paper, we present and classify the supersymmetric extensions of extended kinematical algebras, at the basis of non-Lorentzian physics theories. The diverse kinematical superalgebras are here derived by applying non- and ultra-relativistic expansion procedures involving different semigroups. We then build three-dimensional Chern-Simons non-Lorentzian supergravity theories based on such (extended) kinematical superalgebras, providing the supersymmetry transformation laws of the fields and the field equations of the models, which correspond to the vanishing of the curvature two-forms. In fact, the expansion procedure adopted allows to automatically end up with a non-degenerate bilinear invariant trace for the (extended) kinematical superalgebras. The latter is a crucial ingredient of the Chern-Simons field-theoretical formulation, as it allows to include a kinetic term for each gauge field of the theory, implying the vanishing of the curvature two-forms as field equations.

Abstract:We provide a detailed study of natural inflation with a periodic non-minimal coupling, which is a well-motivated inflationary model that admits an explicit UV completion. We demonstrate that this construction can satisfy the most recent observational constraints from Planck and the BICEP/Keck collaborations. We also compute the corresponding relic gravitational wave background due to tensor perturbations and show that future space-borne interferometers, such as DECIGO, BBO and ALIA, may be able to detect it. Next, we extend this analysis and establish the validity of these results in a multi-field model featuring an additional $R^2$ term in the action, which allows us to interpolate between natural and scalaron (a.k.a.~Starobinsky) inflation. We investigate the conditions under which the aforementioned future interferometers will have the capability to differentiate between pure natural inflation and natural-scalaron inflation. The latter analysis could open the door to distinguishing between single-field and multi-field inflation through gravitational wave observations in more general contexts.

Abstract:We extend our previous study of supersymmetric Higgs inflation in the context of no-scale supergravity and grand unification, to include models based on the flipped SU(5) and the Pati-Salam group. Like the previous SU(5) GUT model, these yield a class of inflation models whose inflation predictions interpolate between those of the quadratic chaotic inflation and Starobinsky-like inflation, while avoiding tension with proton decay limits. We further analyse the reheating process in these models, and derive the number of e-folds, which is independent of the reheating temperature. We derive the corresponding predictions for the scalar tilt and the tensor-to-scalar ratio in cosmic microwave background perturbations, as well as discussing the gravitino production following inflation.

Abstract:We analyse the inflation of the universe when the source of gravity is electromagnetic fields obeying nonlinear electrodynamics, with two parameters and without singularities. The cosmology of the universe with stochastic magnetic fields is considered, and the condition for universe inflation is obtained. It is demonstrated that singularities of energy density and pressure are absent as the scale factor approaches zero. When the scale factor goes to infinity, we have the equation of state for the ultra-relativistic case. The curvature invariants do not possess singularities. The evolution of the universe shows that at large time scales, the scale factor corresponds to the radiation era. The duration of universe inflation is also analysed. We study the classical stability and causality by computing the speed of sound. Cosmological parameters including the spectral index , the tensor-to-scalar ratio r , and the running of the spectral index are evaluated.
