Abstract:The self-focusing condition of a charged particle beam in a resistive plasma has been studied. When plasma heating is weak, the beam focusing is intensified by increasing the beam density or velocity. However, when plasma heating is strong, the beam focusing is only determined by the beam velocity. Especially, in weak heating conditions, the beam trends to be focused into the centre as a whole, and in strong heating conditions, a double-peak structure with a hollow centre is predicted to appear. Furthermore, it is found that the beam radius has a significant effect on focusing distance: a larger the beam radius will result in a longer focusing distance. Simulation results also show that when the beam radius is large enough, filamentation of the beam appears. Our results will serve as a reference for relevant beam–plasma experiments and theoretical analyses, such as heavy ion fusion and ion-beam-driven high energy density physics.

Abstract:A novel unified Hamiltonian approach is proposed to solve Maxwell-Schrodinger equation for modeling the interaction between classical electromagnetic (EM) fields and particles. Based on the Hamiltonian of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics, a unified Maxwell-Schrodinger system is derived by the variational principle. The coupled system is well-posed and symplectic, which ensures energy conserving property during the time evolution. However, due to the disparity of wavelengths of EM waves and that of electron waves, a numerical implementation of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to the multiscale coupled system is extremely challenging. To overcome this difficulty, a reduced eigenmode expansion technique is first applied to represent the wave function of the particle. Then, a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) governing the time evolution of the slowly-varying expansion coefficients are derived to replace the original Schrodinger equation. Finally, Maxwell's equations represented by the vector potential with a Coulomb gauge, together with the ODEs, are solved self-consistently. For numerical examples, the interaction between EM fields and a particle is investigated for both the closed, open and inhomogeneous electromagnetic systems. The proposed approach not only captures the Rabi oscillation phenomenon in the closed cavity but also captures the effects of radiative decay and shift in the open free space. After comparing with the existing theoretical approximate models, it is found that the approximate models break down in certain cases where a rigorous self-consistent approach is needed. This work is helpful for the EM simulation of emerging nanodevices or next-generation quantum electrodynamic systems.

Abstract:The radiation force of highly focused Lorentz-Gauss beams (LG beam) on a dielectric sphere in the Rayleigh scattering regime is theoretically studied. The numerical results show that the Lorentz-Gauss beam can be used to trap particles with the refractive index larger than that of the ambient. The radiation force distribution has been studied under different beam widths of the Lorentz part. The trapping stability under different conditions is also analyzed.

Abstract:This paper develops a clear procedure for solving the nonlinear Vlasov–Maxwell equations for a one-component intense charged particle beam or finite-length charge bunch propagating through a cylindrical conducting pipe (radius r=rw=const), and confined by an applied focusing force Ffoc. In particular, the nonlinear Vlasov–Maxwell equations are Lorentz transformed to the beam frame (“primed” variables) moving with axial velocity Vb=βbc=const relative to the laboratory. In the beam frame, the particle motions are nonrelativistic for the applications of practical interest, already a major simplification. Then, in the beam frame, the electrostatic approximation (Es′=−∇′φ′, ET′≃0≃Bs′) is made, which fully incorporates beam space-charge effects, but neglects any fast electromagnetic processes with transverse polarization (e.g., light waves). The resulting Vlasov–Maxwell equations are then Lorentz transformed back to the laboratory frame, and properties of the self-generated fields and resulting nonlinear Vlasov–Maxwell equations in the laboratory frame are discussed.

Abstract:The radiation force on a Rayleigh dielectric sphere induced by focused anomalous hollow beams is investigated theoretically. The results show that the highly focused anomalous hollow beam can be used to trap and manipulate the particles with the refractive index larger than that of ambient at the focus point, and in the neighborhood of the focal plane simultaneously, it appears two equilibrium points along transverse direction at the focus plane in the neighborhood of the focus point, but it cannot stably trap the particles owing to the longitudinal gradient force which could not act as a restoring force at the corresponding position. And in the neighborhood of the focus plane there also exist three equilibrium points along transverse direction. It is further found that there exist two equilibrium points off axis position along longitudinal direction. Finally, the stability conditions for trapping particles are also discussed.

Abstract:Exact 2D analytic expressions for E and B fields and their potentials created by a linear beam of relativistic charged particles between infinite perfectly conductive plates and ferromagnetic poles are derived. The solutions are obtained by summing an infinite sequence of fields from linear charge-images and current-images in complex space. Knowledge of the normal component of the E field on the conductor surface makes it possible to calculate the induced electric charge surface density. In addition, we derive within an improved linear approximation new analytical expressions for fields near the beam in the case of an arbitrary beam offset from the median plane. The mathematical features of exact solutions and limitations for the applicability of linear approximations are <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://specified.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> primary goals of the future high-luminosity p-p and heavy-ion LHC programme are the search for yet unobserved effects of physics beyond the SM, searches for rare or low-sensitivity processes in the Higgs sector, and probing in more detail the mechanism of EW symmetry breaking. This programme relies on the stable operation of the accelerator. However, as the beam luminosity increases, a number of destabilizing phenomena occur, in particular field emission, enhancing the electron cloud effect. For the case of a proton beam, we apply the exact 2D solution for estimating the intensity of electron field emission activated by the electric field of the beam in collimators of the future high-luminosity LHC. Calculation shows that the field emission intensity is very sensitive to a collimator surface roughness. In addition, with a relatively small and accidental beam displacement from the median path, about 20% of the collimator half-gap, the emission intensity increases by a factor of 1.E+7. This will partially neutralize the beam space charge, violating acceleration dynamics and enhancing instability effects.

Electromagnetic Field Distribution and Divergence-Dependence of a Radially Polarized Gaussian Vector Beam Focused by a Parabolic Mirror

Abstract:In this work, we derived formulae concerning the electric and magnetic field characteristics of a focused radially polarized Gaussian vector beam. Such a beam is consistent with Maxwell's equations contrary to plane waves having uniform field distribution. Hence a realistic picture is provided of the focused field distributions having importance before designing applications such as particle acceleration. For focusing a perfectly reflecting large numerical aperture on-axis parabolic mirror was supposed to have practical importance. The computation technique was based on the Stratton-Chu vector diffraction method. We pointed out that this offers a unique opportunity in the long wavelength regime, where the Richards-Wolf theory becomes unreliable. In the terahertz frequency range longitudinal electric field component with an amplitude of $\sim$160 $\text{MV}/\text{cm}$ was predicted, which is ideal for particle acceleration applications. Based on the field characteristics experienced as a function of the focusing angle, the possibility of using a paraboloid ring for particle acceleration was suggested. Its advantage is reflected not only in the strong available longitudinal field but also in ensuring the unobstructed transfer of particles as a practical point of view. The axial and radial distributions of the longitudinal electric field component for different incident beam divergences were analyzed in detail. It was found that the shift of the physical focus relative to the geometrical focus along the longitudinal direction shows a linear dependence on the divergence. The effect of the divergence angle on the field enhancement factor was also studied.

Abstract:A new approach to the theoretical study of the electron beam-wave interaction in arbitrary RF structures is presented in this paper. In any such interaction system, there are two coordinate systems: the lab system; the rest coordinate system for the plasma, if it exists; and the moving coordinate system for the electron beam. Both the electron beam and the plasma are considered special media with different characteristics. The permittivity tensor and the permeability tensor can be found in the moving coordinate system for the beam while that for the plasma can be found in the lab coordinate system. Then, making use of the transformation of electromagnetic fields in Minkovski space and the Lorentz transformation of the 4D wave vectors, all the physics quantities in the moving coordinate system can be transferred into the lab coordinate system. Then the Maxwell's equations with the transferred constitutive tensors should be used to derive the desired dispersion equation. This new approach is a very efficient and accurate method for the study of electron beam-wave interactions.

Abstract:The analytical expressions of the external and internal electric fields for an anisotropic particle in electromagnetic (EM) beams are presented by transforming anisotropic dielectric particle into the isotropic one based on the scales transformation of EM theory. The theoretical expressions are in good agreement with that in literatures. Taking the case of elliptical Gaussian beam, simulations of influence induced by dielectric tensor and the waists, etc., on the fields are demonstrated. The numerical simulations show that the electric field increases with the augment of beam and the higher order electric field is much smaller than the lower field.
On the Theory of Electron Beam-Wave Interactions in a Magnetized Plasma Waveguids

Abstract:In a magnetized plasma waveguide, the TE mode and the TM mode are always coupled each other. This makes the electron beam-wave interactions much more complicated. Even though, theoretical and experimental studies have been carried on very actively during the past years. Paper presented a Basic Theoretical Formulations on the electron beam-wave interactions by means of the Applied field approximation, paper gave a linear theory based on the dielectric tensor for both the electron beam and the plasma, while in paper based on the Lorentz transformation and the Constitutive transformation in the Minkovsky space, a novel approach of the theory was worked out. An experimental study on a plasma filled Cherenkov radiation device has been carried out in [5]. A report of detailed comparison of the theories and the experiment is presented in this paper. The comparison shows that the novel theoretical approach gives correct and more accurate agreement with the results of the experiment.

Abstract:The theoretical study on the electron beam-wave interactions in a plasma waveguide immersed in a finite magnetic field is given in the article, in which both the plasma and the electron beam are considered as special media. Making use of the constitutive transformation and the Lorentz transformation in the four-dimensional space, the permittivity tensor of the stationary magnetized plasma, the permittivity tensor, the permeability tensor, and the chiral tensor of the electron beam in the rest (laboratory) frame are acquired. Therefore, two coupled wave equations for the magnetized plasma and electron beam have been obtained and the dispersion relations are then achieved by solving these coupled equations together with the boundary conditions including the surface current density due to the ripple of the plasma/beam. As an example of the applications of this approach, the beam-wave interactions in a practical plasma Cherenkov maser have been studied and the numerical calculations have been carried out in detail. It has been found that the present approach is more accurate and can provide clearer mode information for the electron beam-wave interactions in a magnetized plasma waveguide. This approach can be exploited in a number of electron beam-wave interaction systems including some kinds of free electron devices, plasma filled Cherenkov radiated free electron lasers and masers. Abstract:Based on the orthogonalities among the spherical vector wave functions, the expressions of scattering fields are developed as the particle being irradiated by the zeroth-order field and the first-order fields of x, y, and z. A general relation between the expansion coefficients of scattering field and incident field is presented. With the example of the elliptical beam, the scattering property of a particle in beam is investigated. Upon analyzing of the effects of the beam waist, irradiating distance, etc., on scattering property, the validity of the algorithm used is demonstrated. The results show that the beam waist may improve the particle's identification property and the particle has a strong scattering property in both forward and backward directions. The method used is simple and provides a new way for investigating the scattering fields from particles in electromagnetic beams.

Abstract:We investigate nonparaxial accelerating electron beams theoretically in two and three dimensions. Starting from the Klein-Gordon equation, we obtain the Helmholtz equation for electron beams. We demonstrate that the electron beams can accelerate along semi-circular, parabolic, and semi-elliptic trajectories. The shape of the trajectory is determined by the input beam, which can be constructed by using phase masks that reflect the shape of the relevant special functions: half-Bessel, Weber, or half-Mathieu. The corresponding self-healing and ballistic-like effects of the nonparaxial accelerating beams are also demonstrated. The depth of the focus of the electron beam can be adjusted by the order of the function that is included in the input. Our investigation enriches the accelerating electron beam family, and provides new choices for improving the resolution of transmission electron microscope images.

Abstract:We have studied the electron acceleration by a tightly focused cylindrical vector Gaussian beam. Different from the Lax series field, cylindrical vector Gaussian beams are vector-beam solutions of Maxwell's equations and its focusing property can be numerically analyzed by the Richards-Wolf vectorial diffraction theory. Field differences exist between the cylindrical vector Gaussian beam and the Lax series field. The cylindrical vector Gaussian beam increases the asymmetry of the electromagnetic fields, which is more beneficial to the electron acceleration. When the beam waist falls down to the order of the wavelength, the high laser intensity zone is more proper to define the reflection, capture and transmission conditions of the electrons. The injection energy and the injected angle of the electron and the initial phase of the laser beam play important roles for the electron to enter and be trapped by the high laser intensity zone.

Abstract:The radiation force of highly focused cosine-Gaussian beam acting on a particle in the Rayleigh scattering regime is theoretically investigated in this paper. The results show that it is feasible to utilize cosine-Gaussian beam in optical trapping system. Unlike the conventional optical beams, the cosine-Gaussian beam could simultaneously trap particles whose refractive index is lower or higher than the ambient.

Abstract:Propagations of coherent and partially coherent flat-topped beams through a focusing optical system are formulated. The radiation force on a Rayleigh dielectric sphere induced by focused coherent and partially coherent flat-topped beams is investigated theoretically. It is found that we can increase the transverse trapping range at the planes near the focal plane by increasing the flatness (i.e., beam order) of the flat-topped beam, and increase the transverse and longitudinal trapping ranges at the focal plane by decreasing the initial coherence of the flat-topped beam. Moreover the trapping stiffness of flat-topped beam becomes lower as the beam order increases or the initial coherence decreases. The trapping stability is also analyzed. Abstract:The relativistic annular electron beam guided by a finite axial magnetic field is studied in this paper, in which the electron beam is considered as a special media. Abstract:Based on the electron trajectory equation in the drifting tube filled plasma, the focus properties of the electron beam in two area were given. The pattern of electron beam transmission was described as the electrons travelled wavelike around equilibrium radius, the period and scope related to the plasma density and electron velocity. The transmission properties of the electron beam under weak acceleration field were studied. Experimental results show that the electron beam can focus and transmit without the magnetic field.

Abstract:Electromagnetic fields induced by the space charge in relativistic beams play an important role in Accelerator Physics. They lead to emittance growth, slice energy change, and the microbunching instability. Typically, these effects are modeled numerically since simple description exists only in the limits of large- or small-scale current variations. In this paper we consider an axially symmetric charged beam inside a round pipe and find the solution of the space charge problem that is valid in the full range of current variations. We express the solution for the field components in terms of Green's functions, which are fully determined by just a single function. We then find that this function is an on-axis potential from a charged disk in a round pipe, with transverse charge density $\rho_\perp(r)$, and it has a compact analytical expression. We finally provide an integrated Green's function based approach for efficient numerical evaluation in the case when the transverse charge density stays the same along the beam.
