Abstract:We fully describe all horocycle orbit closures in $ \mathbb{Z} $-covers of compact hyperbolic surfaces. Our results rely on a careful analysis of the efficiency of all distance minimizing geodesic rays in the cover. As a corollary we obtain in this setting that all non-maximal horocycle orbit closures, while fractal, have integer Hausdorff dimension.

Abstract:We classify, up to few exceptions, the orbit closures of the Mod(Σ)$${\mathrm {Mod}}(\Sigma )$$-action on the affine character variety χ(Aff(C))$$\chi ( \mathrm {Aff}({\mathbb {C}}))$$. We obtain from this classification that the only obstruction for a non-abelian representation ρ:π1Σ⟶Aff(C)$$\rho : \pi _1 \Sigma \longrightarrow \mathrm {Aff}({\mathbb {C}})$$ to be the holonomy of a branched affine structure on Σ$$\Sigma $$ is to be Euclidean and not to have positive volume, where Σ$$\Sigma $$ is a closed oriented surface of genus g≥2$$g \ge 2$$.

Abstract:A class of languages is closed under a given operation if the resulting language belongs to this class whenever the operands belong to it. We examine the closure properties of various subclasses of regular languages under basic operations of intersection, union, concatenation and power, positive closure and star, reversal, and complementation. We consider the following classes: definite languages and their variants (left ideal, finitely generated left ideal, symmetric definite, generalized definite and combinational), two-sided comets and their variants comets and stars, and the classes of singleton, finite, ordered, star-free, and power-separating languages. We also give an overview about subclasses of convex languages (classes of ideal, free, and closed languages), union-free languages, and group languages. We summarize some inclusion relations between these classes. Subsequently, for all pairs of a class and an operation, we provide an answer whether this class is closed under this operation or not.

Isolated Suborders and their Application to Counting Closure Operators

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the interplay between isolated suborders and closures. Isolated suborders are a special kind of suborders and can be used to diminish the number of elements of an ordered set by means of a quotient construction. The decisive point is that there are simple formulae establishing relationships between the number of closures in the original ordered set and the quotient thereof induced by isolated suborders. We show how these connections can be used to derive a recursive algorithm for counting closures, provided the ordered set under consideration contains suitable isolated suborders.

Abstract:In this paper, closure operators obtained from functions having some properties on bounded lattices are defined. By this way, it is aimed to generalize the notions T and U -closure operators obtained from t-norms and uninorms, respectively. The relationships between the closure operators obtained from functions and their conjugacies (dual functions) are determined. In special cases, the closure operators from implications making closure operators from R-, (S,N)-, QL- implications are determined. Also, the closures of the sets according to the closure operators from implications are studied. The orders obtained from closure operators are introduced, and the properties are discussed.

On closure operations in the space of subgroups and applications

Abstract:We establish some interactions between uniformly recurrent subgroups (URSs) of a group $G$ and cosets topologies $\tau_\mathcal{N}$ on $G$ associated to a family $\mathcal{N}$ of normal subgroups of $G$. We show that when $\mathcal{N}$ consists of finite index subgroups of $G$, there is a natural closure operation $\mathcal{H} \mapsto \mathrm{cl}_\mathcal{N}(\mathcal{H})$ that associates to a URS $\mathcal{H}$ another URS $\mathrm{cl}_\mathcal{N}(\mathcal{H})$, called the $\tau_\mathcal{N}$-closure of $\mathcal{H}$. We give a characterization of the URSs $\mathcal{H}$ that are $\tau_\mathcal{N}$-closed in terms of stabilizer URSs. This has consequences on arbitrary URSs when $G$ belongs to the class of groups for which every faithful minimal profinite action is topologically free. We also consider the largest amenable URS $\mathcal{A}_G$, and prove that for certain coset topologies on $G$, almost all subgroups $H \in \mathcal{A}_G$ have the same closure. For groups in which amenability is detected by a set of laws (a property that is variant of the Tits alternative), we deduce a criterion for $\mathcal{A}_G$ to be a singleton based on residual properties of $G$.

Abstract:In this paper we study the orbit closure problem for a reductive group $G\subseteq GL(X)$ acting on a finite dimensional vector space $V$ over $\C$. We assume that the center of $GL(X)$ lies within $G$ and acts on $V$ through a fixed non-trivial character. We study points $y,z\in V$ where (i) $z$ is obtained as the leading term of the action of a 1-parameter subgroup $\lambda (t)\subseteq G$ on $y$, and (ii) $y$ and $z$ have large distinctive stabilizers $K,H \subseteq G$. Let $O(z)$ (resp. $O(y)$) denote the $G$-orbits of $z$ (resp. $y$), and $\overline{O(z)}$ (resp. $\overline{O(y)}$) their closures, then (i) implies that $z\in \overline{O(y)}$. We address the question: under what conditions can (i) and (ii) be simultaneously satisfied, i.e, there exists a 1-PS $\lambda \subseteq G$ for which $z$ is observed as a limit of $y$. Using $\lambda$, we develop a leading term analysis which applies to $V$ as well as to ${\cal G}= Lie(G)$ the Lie algebra of $G$ and its subalgebras ${\cal K}$ and ${\cal H}$, the Lie algebras of $K$ and $H$ respectively. Through this we construct the Lie algebra $\hat{\cal K} \subseteq {\cal H}$ which connects $y$ and $z$ through their Lie algebras. We develop the properties of $\hat{\cal K}$ and relate it to the action of ${\cal H}$ on $\overline{N}=V/T_z O(z)$, the normal slice to the orbit $O(z)$. We examine the case of {\em alignment} when a semisimple element belongs to both ${\cal H}$ and ${\cal K}$, and the conditions for the same. We illustrate some consequences of alignment. Next, we examine the possibility of {\em intermediate $G$-varieties} $W$ which lie between the orbit closures of $z$ and $y$, i.e. $\overline{O(z)} \subsetneq W \subsetneq O(y)$. These have a direct bearing on representation theoretic as well as geometric properties which connect $z$ and $y$.

Abstract:This article explores the relationship between Hessenberg varieties associated with semisimple operators with two eigenvalues and orbit closures of a spherical subgroup of the general linear group. We establish the specific conditions under which these semisimple Hessenberg varieties are irreducible. We determine the dimension of each irreducible Hessenberg variety under consideration and show that the number of such varieties is a Catalan number. We then apply a theorem of Brion to compute a polynomial representative for the cohomology class of each such variety. Additionally, we calculate the intersections of a standard (Schubert) hyperplane section of the flag variety with each of our Hessenberg varieties and prove this intersection possess a cohomological multiplicity-free property.

Abstract:With a commutative unital quantale $L$ as the truth value table, this study focuses on the representations of $L$-domains by means of $L$-closure spaces. First, the notions of interpolative generalized $L$-closure spaces and directed closed sets are introduced. It is proved that in an interpolative generalized $L$-closure space (resp., $L$-closure space), the collection of directed closed sets with respect to the inclusion $L$-order forms a continuous $L$-dcpo (resp., an algebraic $L$-dcpo). Conversely, it is shown that every continuous $L$-dcpo (resp., algebraic $L$-dcpo) can be reconstructed by an interpolative generalized $L$-closure space (resp., $L$-closure space). Second, when $L$ is integral, the notion of dense subspaces of generalized $L$-closure spaces is introduced. By means of dense subspaces, an alternative representation for algebraic $L$-dcpos is given. Moreover, the concept of $L$-approximable relations between interpolative generalized $L$-closure spaces is introduced. Consequently, a categorical equivalence between the category of interpolative generalized $L$-closure spaces (resp., $L$-closure spaces) with $L$-approximable relations and that of continuous $L$-dcpos (resp., algebraic $L$-dcpos) with Scott continuous mappings is established.

Non-orderability and the contact Hofer norm

Abstract:We relate non-orderability in contact topology to shortening in the contact Hofer norm. Combined with considerations of open books, this provides many new examples of non-orderable contact manifolds, including contact boundaries of subcritical Weinstein domains, and in particular the long-standing case of the standard $S^1 \times S^2.$ We also produce new examples of contact manifolds admitting contactomorphisms without translated points, provide obstructions to subcritical polarizations of symplectic manifolds, and establish a $\mathcal{C}^0$-continuity property of the contact Hofer metric.

Abstract:A compact space Y is called homeo-product-minimal if given any minimal system ( X , T ), it admits a homeomorphism , such that the product system is minimal. We show that a large class of cofrontiers is homeo-product-minimal. This class contains Bing's pseudo-circle, answering a question of Dirbák et al. (Trans Am Math Soc 375:6453–6506, 2022).

Abstract:A tautological system, introduced in [17, 18], arises as a regular holonomic system of partial differential equations that govern the period integrals of a family of complete intersections in a complex manifold X, equipped with a suitable Lie group action. In this article, we introduce two formulas-one purely algebraic, the other geometric-to compute the rank of the solution sheaf of such a system for CY hypersurfaces in a generalized flag variety. The algebraic version gives the local solution space as a Lie algebra homology group, while the geometric one as the middle de Rham cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane section in X. We use both formulas to find certain degenerate points for which the rank of the solution sheaf becomes 1. These rank 1 points appear to be good candidates for the so-called large complex structure limits in mirror symmetry. The formulas are also used to prove a conjecture of Hosono, Lian, and Yau, on the completeness of the extended GKZ system when X is P-n [12].

On closed definable subsets in Hensel minimal structures

Abstract:This paper deals with Hensel minimal structures on non-trivially valued fields $K$. The main aim is to establish the following two properties of closed 0-definable subsets $A$ in the affine spaces $K^{n}$. Every such subset $A$ is the zero locus of a continuous 0-definable function $f:K^{n} \to K$, and there exists a 0-definable retraction $r: K^{n} \to A$. While the former property is a non-Archimedean counterpart of the one from o-minimal geometry, the former does not hold in real geometry in general. The proofs make use of a model-theoretic compactness argument and ubiquity of clopen sets in non-Archimedean geometry.

Effective atypical intersections and applications to orbit closures

Abstract:We propose a unifying setting for dealing with monodromically atypical intersections that goes beyond the usual Zilber-Pink conjecture. In particular we obtain a new proof of finiteness of the maximal atypical orbit closures in each stratum of translation surfaces $\Omega \mathcal{M}_g (\kappa)$, as given by Eskin, Filip, and Wright. We also describe a concrete algorithm, implementable in principle on a computer, which provably computes all maximal orbit closures which are 'atypical' in a sense described by Filip. The same methods also give a general algorithm for computing atypical special loci associated to systems of differential equations, and in particular give an effective and o-minimal free proof of the geometric Zilber-Pink conjecture variations of mixed Hodge structures.

The main motivation of this paper is to construct the concrete categories $\mathbf{\text{\rsfs{C}}\text{-} CCov}$, \ of\ $\mathbf{CCov}\text{-spaces}$, and $\mathbf{I}\text{-}\mathbf CCov$, \ of\ $\mathbf{CCov}\text{-spaces}$ and deduce that they are topological categories.

Abstract:Let $M$ be an oriented smooth manifold, and $\operatorname{Homeo}(M,\omega)$ the group of measure preserving homeomorphisms of $M$, where $\omega$ is a finite measure induced by a volume form. In this paper we define volume and Euler classes in bounded cohomology of an infinite dimensional transformation group $\operatorname{Homeo}_0(M,\omega)$ and $\operatorname{Homeo}(M,\omega)$ respectively, and in several cases prove their non-triviality. More precisely, we define: - Volume classes in $\operatorname{H}_b^n(\operatorname{Homeo}_0(M,\omega))$ where $M$ is a hyperbolic manifold of dimension $n$. - Euler classes in $\operatorname{H}_b^2(\operatorname{Homeo}(S,\omega))$ where $S$ is a closed hyperbolic surface. We show that Euler classes have positive norms for any closed hyperbolic $S$ and volume classes have positive norms for all hyperbolic surfaces and certain hyperbolic $3$-manifolds, and hence they are non-trivial.

Abstract:Let $\phi \in {\rm Mod}(\Sigma)$ be an arbitrary element of the mapping class group of a closed orientable surface $\Sigma$ of genus at least $2$. For any characteristic cover $\widetilde{\Sigma} \to \Sigma$ one can consider the linear subspace ${\rm H}_1^{f.o.}(\widetilde{\Sigma}, \mathbb{Q})^\phi \subseteq {\rm H}_1(\widetilde{\Sigma}, \mathbb{Q})$ consisting of all homology classes with finite $\phi$-orbit. We prove that $\dim {\rm H}_1^{f.o.}(\widetilde{\Sigma}, \mathbb{Q})^\phi$ can be arbitrary large for any fixed $\phi \in {\rm Mod}(\Sigma)$.

Abstract:We study a standard operator on classes of languages: unambiguous polynomial closure. We prove that for every class C of regular languages satisfying mild properties, the membership problem for its unambiguous polynomial closure UPol(C) reduces to the same problem for C. We also show that unambiguous polynomial closure coincides with alternating left and right deterministic closure. Moreover, we prove that if additionally C is finite, the separation and covering problems are decidable for UPol(C). Finally, we present an overview of the generic logical characterizations of the classes built using unambiguous polynomial closure.
