Abstract:It is crucially important to focus conductive heat in an efficient way, which has received much attention in energy science (say, solar cells), but is still far from being satisfactory due to the diffusive (divergent) nature of the heat. By developing a theory with hybrid transformations (rotation and stretch-compression), here we provide theoretical and experimental evidences for a type of thermal metamaterial called thermal converger. The converger is capable of convergently conducting heat in contrast to the known divergent behavior of heat diffusion, thus yielding a large heating region with high temperatures close to the heat source (high efficiency). The thermal converger further allows us to design a thermal grating—a thermal counterpart of optical grating. This work has relevance to heat focus with high efficiency, and it offers guidance both for efficient heat transfer and for designing thermal-converger-like metamaterials in other fields, such as electrics/magnetics, electromagnetics/optics, acoustics, and particle diffusion.

Abstract:Non-reciprocity is increasingly scrutinised in contemporary physics and engineering, especially in the realm of heat transport. This concept opens up novel avenues for directional heat transport and thermal regulation. Nonetheless, the development of non-reciprocal thermal metamaterials confronts three primary challenges: a constrained operational temperature range and structural scale, considerable energy dissipation, and the limitation of non-reciprocal effects due to external parameters that are not freely adjustable. To surmount these hurdles, we propose a reconfigurable approach to non-reciprocal heat transport. The design features a simple asymmetrical structure, with a flat panel made of natural, evenly-distributed material, positioned vertically on one side of a central horizontal board.We employ natural convection on the vertical plate to facilitate non-reciprocal heat transport. The reconfigurability of non-reciprocal heat transport is achieved by adjusting the number of vertical plates and their thermal conductivity. Theoretical computations of the rectification ratio are employed to quantify and forecast the non-reciprocal effect, corroborated by simulations and empirical studies. We also establish correlations between the rectification ratio and various parameters, including the vertical plates' positioning and height, ambient temperature, and the temperature differential between heat sources. Control over multiple parameters can efficaciously widen the scope of non-reciprocal control and streamline experimental procedures. Furthermore, our research exclusively utilises the natural convection of air for non-reciprocal heat transport, obviating the need for Supplementary energy sources and markedly enhancing energy efficiency.

Abstract:Nonreciprocity of thermal metamaterials has significant application prospects in isolation protection, unidirectional transmission, and energy harvesting. However, due to the inherent isotropic diffusion law of heat flow, it is extremely difficult to achieve nonreciprocity of heat transfer. This review presents the recent developments in thermal nonreciprocity and explores the fundamental theories, which underpin the design of nonreciprocal thermal metamaterials, i.e., the Onsager reciprocity theorem. Next, three methods for achieving nonreciprocal metamaterials in the thermal field are elucidated, namely, nonlinearity, spatiotemporal modulation, and angular momentum bias, and the applications of nonreciprocal thermal metamaterials are outlined. We also discuss nonreciprocal thermal radiation. Moreover, the potential applications of nonreciprocity to other Laplacian physical fields are discussed. Finally, the prospects for advancing nonreciprocal thermal metamaterials are highlighted, including developments in device design and manufacturing techniques and machine learning-assisted material design.

Abstract:Thermal nanophotonics has undergone a revolution in recent decades, benefiting from in-depth studies in nano-optics and breakthroughs in nanotechnologies. The majority of thermal devices are constrained by Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation, whereby spectral directional absorptivity and emissivity are identical according to Lorentz reciprocity. This restriction introduces an intrinsic loss in a plethora of energy technologies and prevents us from controlling emission and absorption independently. Recently, there has been considerable progress in realizing nonreciprocal radiation to overcome these limitations. Here we summarize the fundamental physics of nonreciprocal radiation, lay out different approaches to generalize Kirchhoff's law, and highlight several promising nonreciprocal thermal applications. This comprehensive overview of nonreciprocal thermal photonics may reveal new physics, unprecedented nonreciprocal effects and broader potential applications.

However, constrained by the inherent temperature‐dependent properties and the law of mass conservation, previous works were compelled to treat dynamic and steady‐state cases separately. Here, by establishing a unified thermal scattering theory, we report the creation of a convection‐based thermal meta‐device which supports both dynamic and steady‐state nonreciprocal heat circulation. We observe the non‐trivial dependence between the nonreciprocal resonance peaks and the dynamic parameters, and reveal the unique nonreciprocal mechanism of multiple scattering at steady state. This mechanism enables thermal nonreciprocity in the initially quasi‐symmetric scattering matrix of our three‐port meta‐device, and has been experimentally validated with a significant isolation ratio of heat fluxes. Our findings establish a framework for thermal nonreciprocity that can be smoothly modulated for dynamic and steady‐state heat signals, it may also offer insight into other heat‐transfer‐related problems or even other fields such as acoustics and mechanics. Abstract:Using a self-consistent scattered field approach based on fluctuational electrodynamics, we develop compact formulas for radiative heat transfer in many-body systems without the constraint of reciprocity. The formulas allow for efficient numerical calculation for a system consisting of a large number of bodies, and are in principle exact. As a demonstration, for a nonreciprocal many-body system, we investigate persistent heat current at thermal equilibrium and directional heat transfer when the system is away from thermal equilibrium.

Abstract:The emissivity and absorptivity of nonreciprocal thermal emitters are not constrained by the well-known Kirchhoff law of thermal radiation, which usually serves as the theoretical basis to characterize thermal properties. When thermal emitters are nondiffracting, which is the case in previous studies of nonreciprocal thermal emitters, the angular distribution of emissivity and absorptivity is mirror symmetric with respect to the normal direction, and the nonreciprocal effect is confined to a relatively narrow angular range. In this work, we consider nonreciprocal thermal emitters that can simultaneously couple to multiple diffraction channels. We show that the symmetry relation between absorptivity and emissivity can be broken in such multichannel emitters. The angular range in which the nonreciprocal effect is strong can also be significantly broadened. Such multichannel emitters can operate as one-way energy splitters. Our work significantly broadens the flexibility of thermal-radiation control in nonreciprocal thermal-emitter design.

Abstract:Thermal nonreciprocity plays a vital role in chip heat dissipation, energy-saving design, and high-temperature hyperthermia, typically realized through the use of advanced metamaterials with nonlinear, advective, spatiotemporal, or gradient properties. However, challenges such as fixed structural designs with limited adjustability, high energy consumption, and a narrow operational temperature range remain prevalent. Here, a systematic framework is introduced to achieve reconfigurable, zero-energy, and wide-temperature thermal nonreciprocity by transforming wasteful heat loss into a valuable regulatory tool. Vertical slabs composed of natural bulk materials enable asymmetric heat loss through natural convection, disrupting the inversion symmetry of thermal conduction. The reconfigurability of this system stems from the ability to modify heat loss by adjusting thermal conductivity, size, placement, and quantity of the slabs. Moreover, this structure allows for precise control of zero-energy thermal nonreciprocity across a broad temperature spectrum, utilizing solely environmental temperature gradients without additional energy consumption. This research presents a different approach to achieving nonreciprocity, broadening the potential for nonreciprocal devices such as thermal diodes and topological edge states, and inspiring further exploration of nonreciprocity in other loss-based systems.

Abstract:Radiative cooling has emerged as a promising cooling technology for its potential in reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions. Remarkable progress has been made, and numerous novel materials have been designed and fabricated. However, different researchers adopted different homemade temperature measuring devices, making it difficult to compare the reported sub-ambient temperature drops since the thermal properties of different temperature measuring devices vary largely from one another, especially the non-radiative heat transfer coefficient. In this work, we propose a simple, accurate, and universal method to quantify non-radiative heat flux and non-radiative heat transfer coefficient of measuring devices, and compare them with the traditional method adopted in literature. The proposed method uses two identical measuring devices to measure the sub-ambient temperature drop and the net cooling power simultaneously to derive non-radiative heat transfer coefficient. To characterize and compare the thermal performance of a radiative cooling material or device, we recommend that both maximum sub-ambient temperature drop and non-radiative heat transfer coefficient should be reported. It is worth noting that the proposed method can obtain non-radiative heat transfer coefficient with high accuracy and it is not affected by weather conditions.

Abstract:Nonreciprocal thermal radiation is valuable to the energy transmission and collection. Issues of single polarization in near-infrared band with large incident angle cast limitations on the development of nonreciprocal thermal radiation. A dual-polarization narrow-band nonreciprocal thermal radiator in near-infrared band with extremely small incident angle is proposed to address these issues. The radiator consists of periodic annular arrays, magneto-optical medium and metal reflective layer. The simulation results show that the nonreciprocity of two polarizations is greater than 85 % with ultra-high Q factor at the angle of 0.8°. The finite element method and coupled mode theory that are adopted in the study offer high consistent results, which prove the accuracy of calculation results. The physical mechanism of near-infrared narrow-band nonreciprocal radiation is attributed to the excitation of cavity resonance and guided mode resonance. The proposed two-dimensional near-infrared nonreciprocal radiator that allows the dual-polarization operation at small incident angle offers it good potentials in thermal photovoltaic system and energy conversion.

Abstract:Abstract The reciprocity principle governs the symmetry in transmission of electromagnetic and acoustic waves, as well as the diffusion of heat between two points in space, with important consequences for thermal management and energy harvesting. There has been significant recent interest in materials with time-modulated properties, which have been shown to efficiently break reciprocity for light, sound, and even charge diffusion. However, time modulation may not be a plausible approach to break thermal reciprocity, in contrast to the usual perception. We establish a theoretical framework to accurately describe the behavior of diffusive processes under time modulation, and prove that thermal reciprocity in dynamic materials is generally preserved by the continuity equation, unless some external bias or special material is considered. We then experimentally demonstrate reciprocal heat transfer in a time-modulated device. Our findings correct previous misconceptions regarding reciprocity breaking for thermal diffusion, revealing the generality of symmetry constraints in heat transfer, and clarifying its differences from other transport processes in what concerns the principles of reciprocity and microscopic reversibility.

Abstract:Nonreciprocal radiation is very important in essentially improving energy conversion. There have been many approaches to enhance the nonreciprocal thermal radiation properties for transverse magnetic (TM) wave incidence. However, the nonreciprocal thermal emitters for both polarization states are desired in practice, such as solar cells. In this paper, we design and demonstrate a nonreciprocal thermal emitter for transverse electric (TE) wave. By using attenuated total reflection, the nonreciprocal radiation for TE wave in Weyl semimetal film can be notably enhanced. It shows that the reciprocity between absorption and emission can be strongly broken with the difference of 0.93 at wavelength of 12 μm. Furthermore, the co-polarization and cross-polarization in the reflected wave are calculated to analyze the physical mechanism of strong nonreciprocal radiation. In addition, we discuss the influence of structural parameters, such as the thickness of the air gap, the thickness of Weyl semimetal film, the azimuthal angle and the incident angle, on the nonreciprocity. This work not only provides theoretical guidance for the design of nonreciprocal thermal emitters for TE wave, but also has promising applications in solar cells.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the enhancement of thermoelectric cooling performance in thermoelectric refrigerators made of materials with inhomogeneous thermal conductivity, beyond the usual practice of enhancing thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of materials. The dissipation of the Joule heat in such thermoelectric refrigerators is asymmetric which can give rise to better thermoelectric cooling performance. Although the thermoelectric figure of merit and the coefficient-of-performance are slightly enhanced, both the maximum cooling power and the maximum cooling temperature difference can be enhanced significantly. This finding can be used to increase the heat absorption at the cold end. We further find that the asymmetric dissipation of Joule heat leads to thermal rectification.

Abstract:Inconsistent measurement or even erroneous data and different reporting styles widely exist in the radiative cooling community. This adds difficulty in comparing and reproducing cooling performance across diverse radiative cooling materials from different researchers. It is outlined general considerations for cooling assessment measurements, including optical characterization and outdoor thermal measurement. This study also provides guidelines on properly reporting measurement settings and results. Radiative cooling has emerged as a passive cooling strategy and has attracted significant attention, particularly over the past five years. While many researchers have designed various radiative cooling materials and evaluated their cooling performance, inconsistent or even erroneous measurement data and different reporting styles widely exist. This lack of consistency adds complexity to the comparison and reproduction of cooling performance across the diverse range of radiative cooling materials studied by different researchers. In this paper, general considerations for assessing cooling performance measurements, including optical characterization and outdoor thermal measurements, are outlined. Moreover, guidelines on properly reporting measurement settings and results are provided. This work aims to help the radiative cooling community achieve consistent cooling performance assessment, ultimately advancing this promising technology toward alleviating global cooling demands.

Abstract:Nonreciprocity is of particular importance to realize one-way propagation, thus attracting intensive research interest in various fields. Thermal waves, essentially originating from periodic temperature fluctuations, are also expected to achieve one-way propagation, but the related mechanism is still lacking. To solve the problem, we introduce spatiotemporal modulation to realize thermal wave nonreciprocity. Since thermal waves are completely transient, both the convective term and the Willis term induced by spatiotemporal modulation should be considered. We also analytically study the phase difference between two spatiotemporally modulated parameters, which offers a tunable parameter to control nonreciprocity. We further define a rectification ratio based on the reciprocal of spatial decay rate and discuss nonreciprocity conditions accordingly. Finite-element simulations are performed to confirm theoretical predictions, and experimental suggestions are provided to ensure the feasibility of spatiotemporal modulation. These results have potential applications in realizing thermal detection and thermal stabilization simultaneously.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Photonic structures at the wavelength scale offer innovative energy solutions for a wide range of applications, from high-efficiency photovoltaics to passive cooling, thus reshaping the global energy landscape. Radiative cooling based on structural and material design presents new opportunities for sustainable carbon neutrality as a zero-energy, ecologically friendly cooling strategy. In this review, in addition to introducing the fundamentals of the basic theory of radiative cooling technology, typical radiative cooling materials alongside their cooling effects over recent years are summarized and the current research status of radiative cooling materials is outlined and discussed. Furthermore, technical challenges and potential advancements for radiative cooling are forecast with an outline of future application scenarios and development trends. In the future, radiative cooling is expected to make a significant contribution to global energy saving and emission reduction.
