Abstract:It is crucially important to focus conductive heat in an efficient way, which has received much attention in energy science (say, solar cells), but is still far from being satisfactory due to the diffusive (divergent) nature of the heat. By developing a theory with hybrid transformations (rotation and stretch-compression), here we provide theoretical and experimental evidences for a type of thermal metamaterial called thermal converger. The converger is capable of convergently conducting heat in contrast to the known divergent behavior of heat diffusion, thus yielding a large heating region with high temperatures close to the heat source (high efficiency). The thermal converger further allows us to design a thermal grating—a thermal counterpart of optical grating. This work has relevance to heat focus with high efficiency, and it offers guidance both for efficient heat transfer and for designing thermal-converger-like metamaterials in other fields, such as electrics/magnetics, electromagnetics/optics, acoustics, and particle diffusion.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian wave system has attracted intense attentions in the past decade since it reveals interesting physics and generates various counterintuitive effects. However, in the diffusive system that is inherently non-Hermitian with natural dissipation, the robust control of heat flow is hitherto still a challenge. Here we introduce the skin effect into diffusive systems. Different from the skin effect in wave systems, where asymmetric couplings were enabled by dynamic modulations or judicious gain/loss engineering, asymmetric couplings of the temperature fields in diffusive systems can be realized by directly contacted metamaterial channels. Topological heat funneling is further presented, where the temperature field automatically concentrates towards a designated position and shows a strong immunity against the defects. Our work indicates that the diffusive system can provide a distinctive platform for exploring non-Hermitian physics as well as thermal topology. Non-Hermitian systems can house a range of unusual physical phenomena such as the skin-effect which has been typically observed in optical lattices and electrical circuits. Here, the authors show the non-Hermitian skin effect in thermal transport, demonstrating that the topologically protected heat flow can be realized by using thermal metamaterials.

Abstract:Nonreciprocity of thermal metamaterials has significant application prospects in isolation protection, unidirectional transmission, and energy harvesting. However, due to the inherent isotropic diffusion law of heat flow, it is extremely difficult to achieve nonreciprocity of heat transfer. This review presents the recent developments in thermal nonreciprocity and explores the fundamental theories, which underpin the design of nonreciprocal thermal metamaterials, i.e., the Onsager reciprocity theorem. Next, three methods for achieving nonreciprocal metamaterials in the thermal field are elucidated, namely, nonlinearity, spatiotemporal modulation, and angular momentum bias, and the applications of nonreciprocal thermal metamaterials are outlined. We also discuss nonreciprocal thermal radiation. Moreover, the potential applications of nonreciprocity to other Laplacian physical fields are discussed. Finally, the prospects for advancing nonreciprocal thermal metamaterials are highlighted, including developments in device design and manufacturing techniques and machine learning-assisted material design.

One-way heat transfer in deep-subwavelength thermophotonics

Abstract:Nonreciprocal thermophotonics, by breaking Lorentz reciprocity, exceeds current theoretical efficiency limits, unlocking opportunities to energy devices and thermal management. However, energy transfer in current systems is highly defect-sensitive. This sensitivity is further amplified at deep subwavelength scales by inevitable multi-source interactions, interface wrinkles, and manufacturing tolerances, making precise control of thermal photons increasingly challenging. Here, we demonstrate a topological one-way heat transport in a deep-subwavelength thermophotonic lattice. This one-way heat flow, driven by global resonances, is strongly localized at the geometric boundaries and exhibits exceptional robustness against imperfections and disorder, achieving nearly five orders of radiative enhancement. Our findings offer a blueprint for developing robust thermal systems capable of withstanding strong perturbations.

Reconfigurable nonreciprocal heat transport with natural bulk materials

Abstract:Non-reciprocity is increasingly scrutinised in contemporary physics and engineering, especially in the realm of heat transport. This concept opens up novel avenues for directional heat transport and thermal regulation. Nonetheless, the development of non-reciprocal thermal metamaterials confronts three primary challenges: a constrained operational temperature range and structural scale, considerable energy dissipation, and the limitation of non-reciprocal effects due to external parameters that are not freely adjustable. To surmount these hurdles, we propose a reconfigurable approach to non-reciprocal heat transport. The design features a simple asymmetrical structure, with a flat panel made of natural, evenly-distributed material, positioned vertically on one side of a central horizontal board.We employ natural convection on the vertical plate to facilitate non-reciprocal heat transport. The reconfigurability of non-reciprocal heat transport is achieved by adjusting the number of vertical plates and their thermal conductivity. Theoretical computations of the rectification ratio are employed to quantify and forecast the non-reciprocal effect, corroborated by simulations and empirical studies. We also establish correlations between the rectification ratio and various parameters, including the vertical plates' positioning and height, ambient temperature, and the temperature differential between heat sources. Control over multiple parameters can efficaciously widen the scope of non-reciprocal control and streamline experimental procedures. Furthermore, our research exclusively utilises the natural convection of air for non-reciprocal heat transport, obviating the need for Supplementary energy sources and markedly enhancing energy efficiency.

Abstract:Thermal nanophotonics has undergone a revolution in recent decades, benefiting from in-depth studies in nano-optics and breakthroughs in nanotechnologies. The majority of thermal devices are constrained by Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation, whereby spectral directional absorptivity and emissivity are identical according to Lorentz reciprocity. This restriction introduces an intrinsic loss in a plethora of energy technologies and prevents us from controlling emission and absorption independently. Recently, there has been considerable progress in realizing nonreciprocal radiation to overcome these limitations. Here we summarize the fundamental physics of nonreciprocal radiation, lay out different approaches to generalize Kirchhoff's law, and highlight several promising nonreciprocal thermal applications. This comprehensive overview of nonreciprocal thermal photonics may reveal new physics, unprecedented nonreciprocal effects and broader potential applications.

Abstract:Thermal nonreciprocity plays a vital role in chip heat dissipation, energy-saving design, and high-temperature hyperthermia, typically realized through the use of advanced metamaterials with nonlinear, advective, spatiotemporal, or gradient properties. However, challenges such as fixed structural designs with limited adjustability, high energy consumption, and a narrow operational temperature range remain prevalent. Here, a systematic framework is introduced to achieve reconfigurable, zero-energy, and wide-temperature thermal nonreciprocity by transforming wasteful heat loss into a valuable regulatory tool. Vertical slabs composed of natural bulk materials enable asymmetric heat loss through natural convection, disrupting the inversion symmetry of thermal conduction. The reconfigurability of this system stems from the ability to modify heat loss by adjusting thermal conductivity, size, placement, and quantity of the slabs. Moreover, this structure allows for precise control of zero-energy thermal nonreciprocity across a broad temperature spectrum, utilizing solely environmental temperature gradients without additional energy consumption. This research presents a different approach to achieving nonreciprocity, broadening the potential for nonreciprocal devices such as thermal diodes and topological edge states, and inspiring further exploration of nonreciprocity in other loss-based systems.

Abstract:The emissivity and absorptivity of nonreciprocal thermal emitters are not constrained by the well-known Kirchhoff law of thermal radiation, which usually serves as the theoretical basis to characterize thermal properties. When thermal emitters are nondiffracting, which is the case in previous studies of nonreciprocal thermal emitters, the angular distribution of emissivity and absorptivity is mirror symmetric with respect to the normal direction, and the nonreciprocal effect is confined to a relatively narrow angular range. In this work, we consider nonreciprocal thermal emitters that can simultaneously couple to multiple diffraction channels. We show that the symmetry relation between absorptivity and emissivity can be broken in such multichannel emitters. The angular range in which the nonreciprocal effect is strong can also be significantly broadened. Such multichannel emitters can operate as one-way energy splitters. Our work significantly broadens the flexibility of thermal-radiation control in nonreciprocal thermal-emitter design.

Abstract:Thermal nonreciprocity typically stems from nonlinearity or spatiotemporal variation of parameters. However, constrained by the inherent temperature-dependent properties and the law of mass conservation, previous works have been compelled to treat dynamic and steady-state cases separately. Here, by establishing a unified thermal scattering theory, the creation of a convection-based thermal metadevice which supports both dynamic and steady-state nonreciprocal heat circulation is reported. The nontrivial dependence between the nonreciprocal resonance peaks and the dynamic parameters is observed and the unique nonreciprocal mechanism of multiple scattering is revealed at steady state. This mechanism enables thermal nonreciprocity in the initially quasi-symmetric scattering matrix of the three-port metadevice and has been experimentally validated with a significant isolation ratio of heat fluxes. The findings establish a framework for thermal nonreciprocity that can be smoothly modulated for dynamic and steady-state heat signals, it may also offer insight into other heat-transfer-related problems or even other fields such as acoustics and mechanics.
Temperature Control of Thermal Radiation from Composite Bodies

Abstract:We demonstrate that recent advances in nanoscale thermal transport and temperature manipulation can be brought to bear on the problem of tailoring thermal radiation from compact emitters. We show that wavelength-scale composite bodies involving complicated arrangements of phase-change chalcogenide (GST) glasses and metals or semiconductors can exhibit large emissivities and partial directivities at mid-infrared wavelengths, a consequence of temperature localization within the GST. We consider multiple object topologies, including spherical, cylindrical, and mushroom-like composites, and show that partial directivity follows from a complicated interplay between particle shape, material dispersion, and temperature localization. Our calculations exploit a recently developed fluctuating-volume current formulation of electromagnetic fluctuations that rigorously captures radiation phenomena in structures with both temperature and dielectric inhomogeneities.

Nonreciprocity in transmission mode with planar structures for arbitrarily polarized light

Abstract:Approaching thermodynamic limits in light harvesting requires enabling nonreciprocal thermal emission. The majority of previously reported nonreciprocal thermal emitters operate in reflection mode, following original proposals by M. Green and others. In these proposals, cascaded nonreciprocal junctions that re-direct each junction's emission towards a subsequent one are employed for efficient light-harvesting. Recently, simplified concepts have been proposed in solar photovoltaics and thermophotovoltaics that leverage the concept of tandem junctions to approach thermodynamic limits. In these simplified scenarios, polarization-independent nonreciprocal response in transmission mode is required. We propose a pattern-free heterostructure that enables such functionality, using a magneto-optical material embedded between two dissimilar dielectric layers.

Abstract:Asymmetric heat-transfer systems, often referred to as thermal diodes or thermal rectifiers, have garnered increasing interest due to their wide range of application possibilities. Most of those previous macroscopic asymmetric thermal devices either resort to nonlinear thermal conductivities with strong temperature dependence that may be quite limited by or fixed in natural materials or rely on active modulation that necessitates auxiliary energy payloads. Here, we establish a straightforward strategy of passively realizing asymmetric heat transfer with linear conductive materials. The strategy also introduces an interrogative perspective into the previous design of passive asymmetric heat transfer utilizing nonlinear thermal conductivity, correcting the misconception that thermal rectification is impossible with separable nonlinear thermal conductivity. The nonlinear-perturbation mode can be versatilely engineered to produce an effective and wide-ranging perturbation in heat conduction, which imitates and bypasses intrinsic thermal nonlinearity constraints set by naturally occurring counterparts. Independent experimental characterizations of surface thermal radiation and thermal convection verify that heat exchange between a graded linear thermal metamaterial and the ambient surroundings can be tailored to achieve macroscopic asymmetric heat transfer. Abstract:Recent advancements in nonreciprocal thermal emitters challenge the conventional Kirchhoff's law, which states that emissivity and absorptivity should be equal for a given direction, frequency, and polarization. These emitters can break Kirchhoff's law and enable unprecedented thermal photon control capabilities. However, current studies mainly focus on increasing the magnitude of the contrast between emissivity and absorptivity, with little attention paid to how the sign or bandwidth of the contrast may be controlled. In this work, we show such control ability can be achieved by coupling resonances that can provide opposite contrasts between emissivity and absorptivity.

Abstract:Violating Kirchhoff's radiation law through magneto-optical materials or spatiotemporal (Floquet) metamaterials can open a new door for engineering thermal radiation by breaking the widely-accepted equal constraint of spectral absorptivity ( α ) and emissivity ( ε ). Most existing work only reports the unequal α and ε spectra in one or two bands and within limited angles. This significantly limits the practical applications like the nonreciprocal thermophotovoltaics. In this work, we present a general machine-learning-kernel-based algorithm framework, based on which we achieve four-band nonreciprocal thermal radiation via the magneto-optical (MO) materials. The realization of multi-band nonreciprocity is mainly attributed to the coupling effect of magneto-optical effect and the excitation of cavity modes with different orders, which can be confirmed by investigating the magnetic field distribution. In addition, it is found that dual-band/multi-band strong nonreciprocal thermal radiation can be realized in a wide range of incident angles (15°-85°). The number of bands and range of angle can be further enhanced by modulating the number of layers, structures, materials, and applied magnetic field. The present work offers a general design roadmap for nonreciprocal thermal radiation, and can be extended for designing metamaterials beyond thermal metamaterials.

Abstract:We propose a new mechanism for irreversibility of light assisted by surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). By achieving the different mutual conversion efficiency between the radiation field and the SPPs on the opposite surfaces of metal membrane, the unidirectional transmission is observed in a quite simple asymmetric metallic sub-wavelength structures Ag(15nm)/AAO, in which the difference of the two-way transmittance is large than 50%.

Abstract:Non-reciprocal devices—in which light is transmitted with different efficiencies along opposite directions—are key technologies for modern photonic applications, yet their compact and miniaturized implementation remains an open challenge. Among different avenues, nonlinearity-induced non-reciprocity has attracted significant attention due to the absence of external bias and the ease of integrability within conventional material platforms. So far, nonlinearity-induced non-reciprocity has been demonstrated only in guided platforms using high-quality-factor resonators. Here we demonstrate ultrathin optical metasurfaces with a large non-reciprocal response for free-space radiation based on silicon thermo-optic nonlinearities. Our metasurfaces combine an out-of-plane asymmetry—necessary to obtain non-reciprocity—with in-plane broken symmetry, which finely tunes the radiative linewidth of quasi-bound states in the continuum. Third-order thermo-optic nonlinearities, engaged by the quasi-bound state in the continuum, are shown to enable over 10 dB of non-reciprocal transmission and less than 3 dB of insertion loss, for impinging average intensities smaller than 3 kW cm –2 . Numerical calculations suggest that the build-up and relaxation times of the non-reciprocal response can approach sub-microsecond scales, only limited by thermal dissipation. The demonstrated devices merge the field of non-reciprocity with ultrathin metasurface technologies, offering an exciting functionality for signal processing and routing, communications and protection of high-power laser cavities.
