Abstract:The known equivalence of 8-dimensional chiral spinors and vectors, also referred to as triality, is discussed for (4+4)-space. Split octonionic representation of SO(4,4) and Spin(4,4) groups and the trilinear invariant form are explicitly written and compared with Clifford algebraic matrix representation. It is noted that the complete algebra of split octonionic basis units can be recovered from the Moufang and Malcev relations for the three vector-like elements. Lagrangians on split octonionic fields that generalize Dirac and Maxwell systems are constructed using group invariant forms. It is shown that corresponding equations are related to split octonionic analyticity conditions.

On Hamiltonian formulations of the Dirac system

Abstract:We extend a previously successful discussion of the constrained Schrödinger system through the Dirac--Bergmann algorithm to the case of the Dirac field. In order to follow the analogy, first we discuss the classical Dirac field as a spinorial variable, by introducing properly defined momenta and a suitably modified, factor ordered Poisson bracket. According to the Dirac--Bergmann algorithm two second class Hamiltonian constraints emerge, leading to a factor ordered Dirac bracket on the full phase space. This becomes the Poisson bracket on the reduced phase space in the canonical chart adapted to the shell. The Dirac equation is recovered both as consistency condition on the full phase space and as canonical equation on the reduced phase space. Alternatively, considering the Dirac field as odd Grassmann variable, we present the details of the Dirac--Bergmann algorithm (with either left and righ derivatives acting on Grassmann valued superfunctions and involving a different type of generalized Poisson and Dirac brackets). We propose a recipe for the canonical second quantization of all three versions of the generalized Dirac brackets, yielding the correct fundamental anticommutator.

Abstract:One purpose of this article is to draw attention to the seminal work of J. Mealy in 1989 on calibrations in semi-riemannian geometry where split SLAG geometry was first introduced. The natural setting is provided by doing geometry with the complex numbers C replaced by the double numbers D, where i with – = -1 is replaced by $$ \tau $$with $$ \tau^{2} = 1 $$. A rather surprising amount of complex geometry carries over, almost untouched, and this has been the subject of many papers. We briefly review this material and, in particular, we discuss Hermitian D-manifolds with trivial canonical bundle, which provide the background space for the geometry of split SLAG submanifolds. A removable singularities result is proved for split SLAG subvarieties. It implies, in particular, that there exist no split SLAG cones, smooth outside the origin, other than planes. This is in sharp contrast to the complex case. Parallel to the complex case, space-like Lagrangian submanifolds are stationary if and only if they are Ѳ-split SLAG for some constant phase angle Ѳ, and infinitesimal deformations of split SLAG submanifolds are characterized by harmonic 1-forms on the submanifold. We also briefly review the recent work of Kim, McCann and Warren who have shown that split Special Lagrangian geometry is directly related to the Monge-Kantorovich mass transport problem.

Abstract:The theory of split-quaternion analysis and split-quaternion geometry is nowadays under full development. In this article, we extend quaternionic Hermitian Clifford analysis to the case of split-quaternions. The split-quaternionic Hermitian Dirac operator is introduced as a self-map of smooth functions defined in domains of with values in the tensor product of the hyperbolic quaternions , the split-quaternions and the Clifford algebra . It is defined by with being the basis of and denoting the twisted Hermitian Dirac operators in the split-quaternionic Clifford algebra whose definition is based on a delicate construction of the split-quaternionic Witt basis. We establish the counterpart of the Cauchy integral formula.

Abstract:A signature independent formalism is created and utilized to determine the general second-order symmetry operators for Dirac's equation on two-dimensional Lorentzian spin manifolds. The formalism is used to characterize the orthonormal frames and metrics that permit the solution of Dirac's equation by separation of variables in the case where a second-order symmetry operator underlies the separation. Separation of variables in complex variables on two-dimensional Minkowski space is also considered.

Abstract:Given a vector bundle A over a smooth manifold M such that the square root L of the line bundle ∧topA⁎⊗∧topT⁎M exists, the Clifford bundle associated to the standard split pseudo-Euclidean vector bundle (E=A⊕A⁎,〈⋅,⋅〉) admits a spinor bundle ∧•A⊗L, whose section space consists of Berezinian half-densities of the graded manifold A⁎[1]. Inspired by Kosmann-Schwarzbach's formula of deriving operator of split Courant algebroid (or proto-bialgebroid) structures on A⊕A⁎, we give an explicit construction of the associate Dirac generating operator introduced by Alekseev and Xu. We prove that the square of the Dirac generating operator is an invariant of the corresponding split Courant algebroid, and also give an explicit expression of this invariant in terms of modular elements.

Abstract:Dirac's leaping insight that the normalized anti-commutator of the {\gamma}^{\mu} matrices must equal the timespace signature {\eta}^{\mu}{\nu} was decisive for the success of his equation. The {\gamma}^{\mu}-s are the same in all Lorentz frames and "describe some new degrees of freedom, belonging to some internal motion in the electron". Therefore, the imposed link to {\eta}^{\mu}{\nu} constitutes a separate postulate of Dirac's theory. I derive a manifestly covariant first order equation from the direct quantization of the classical 4-momentum vector using the formalism of Geometric Algebra. All properties of the Dirac electron & positron follow from the equation - preconceived 'internal degrees of freedom', ad hoc imposed signature and matrices unneeded. In the novel scheme, the Dirac operator is frame-free and manifestly Lorentz invariant. Relative to a Lorentz frame, the classical spacetime frame vectors e^{\mu} appear instead of the {\gamma}^{\mu} matrices. Axial frame vectors (without cross product) of the 3D orientation space defining spin and rotations appear instead of the Pauli matrices; polar frame vectors of the 3D position space naturally define boosts, etc. Not the least, the formalism shows a significantly higher computational efficiency compared to matrices.

Abstract:We single out a class of Lagrangians on a group manifold, for which one can introduce non-canonical coordinates in the phase space, which simplify the construction of the Poisson structure without explicitly calculating the Dirac bracket. In the case of $SO(3)$\,- manifold, the application of this formalism leads to the Poincaré-Chetaev equations. The general solution to these equations is written in terms of exponential of the Hamiltonian vector field.

Abstract:We derive a counting formula for the eigenvalues of Schrödinger operators with self-adjoint boundary conditions on quantum star graphs. More specifically, we develop techniques using Evans functions to reduce full quantum graph eigenvalue problems into smaller subgraph eigenvalue problems. These methods provide a simple way to calculate the spectra of operators with localized potentials.

The critical points of this functional are called Dirac-harmonic maps. We study some geometric and analytic aspects of such maps, in particular a removable singularity theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a time splitting scheme for the Schrodinger equation in the presence of electromagnetic eld in the semi-classical regime, where the wave function propagates O(e) oscillations in space and time. With the operator splitting technique, the time evolution of the Schrodinger equation is divided into three parts: the kinetic step, the convection step and the potential step. The kinetic and the potential steps can be handled by the classical time-splitting spectral method. For the convection step, we propose a semi-Lagrangian method in order to allow large time steps. We prove the unconditional stability conditions with spatially variant external vector potentials, and the error estimate in the l approximation of the wave function. By comparing with the semi-classical limit, the classical Liouville equation in the Wigner framework, we show that this method is able to capture the correct physical observables with time step ∆t ≫ e. We implement this method numerically for both one dimensional and two dimensional cases to verify that e−independent time steps can indeed be taken in computing physical observables.

Abstract:In this work, we have extended the factorization method of scalar shape-invariant Schrödinger Hamiltonians to a class of Dirac-like matrix Hamiltonians. The intertwining operators of the Schrödinger equations have been implemented in the Dirac-like shape invariant equations. We have considered also another kind of anti-intertwining operators changing the sign of energy. The Dirac-like Hamiltonians can be obtained from reduction of higher dimensional spin systems. Two examples have been worked out, one obtained from the sphere <span class="mathjax-tex">${{\mathcal {S}}}^2$</span> and a second one, having a non-Hermitian character, from the hyperbolic space <span class="mathjax-tex">${{\mathcal {H}}}^2$</span>.

Abstract:We propose two classes of symplecticity-preserving symmetric splitting methods for semi-classical Hamiltonian dynamics of charge transfer by intrinsic localized modes in nonlinear crystal lattice models. We consider, without loss of generality, one-dimensional crystal lattice models described by classical Hamiltonian dynamics, whereas the charge (electron or hole) is modeled as a quantum particle within the tight-binding approximation. Canonical Hamiltonian equations for coupled lattice-charge dynamics are derived, and a linear analysis of linearized equations with the derivation of the dispersion relations is performed. Structure-preserving splitting methods are constructed by splitting the total Hamiltonian into the sum of Hamiltonians, for which the individual dynamics can be solved exactly. Symmetric methods are obtained with the Strang splitting of exact, symplectic flow maps leading to explicit second-order numerical integrators. Splitting methods that are symplectic and conserve exactly the charge probability are also proposed. Conveniently, they require only one solution of a linear system of equations per time step. The developed methods are computationally efficient and preserve the structure; therefore, they provide new means for qualitative numerical analysis and long-time simulations for charge transfer by nonlinear lattice excitations. The properties of the developed methods are explored and demonstrated numerically considering charge transport by mobile discrete breathers in an example model previously proposed for a layered crystal.

Relativistic exponential-type spinor orbitals and their use in many-electron Dirac equation solution

Abstract:Dirac-Coulomb type differential equation and its solution relativistic exponential-type spinor orbitals are introduced. They provide a revised form for operator invariants, namely Dirac invariants, simplifying the treatment of the angular components in calculation of many-electron systems. The relativistic Coulomb energy is determined by employing a spectral solution to Poisson's equation for the one-electron potential, which is expressed in terms of radial functions involving incomplete gamma functions. The computation for incomplete gamma functions posses challenges due to slow convergence rate associated with their series representation. Such difficulties are eliminated through use of the bi-directional method along with hyper-radial functions. A new formulation for relativistic auxiliary functions that improve the efficiency in Coulomb energy calculations is presented. These formulations also contribute to inquiring into orthogonal expansions for solutions to Poisson's equation using complete orthonormal sets of exponential orbitals with non-integer principal quantum numbers. They may provide a meaningful alternative series representations.

Abstract:A new method to solve the Dirac equation on a 3D lattice is proposed, in which the variational collapse problem is avoided by the inverse Hamiltonian method and the fermion doubling problem is avoided by performing spatial derivatives in momentum space with the help of the discrete Fourier transform, i.e., the spectral method. This method is demonstrated in solving the Dirac equation for a given spherical potential in 3D lattice space. In comparison with the results obtained by the shooting method, the differences in single particle energy are smaller than 10^-4 MeV, and the densities are almost identical, which demonstrates the high accuracy of the present method. The results obtained by applying this method without any modification to solve the Dirac equations for an axial deformed, non-axial deformed, and octupole deformed potential are provided and discussed.

Abstract: We provide an alternative approach to relativistic dynamics based on the Feshbach projection technique. Instead of directly studying the Dirac equation, we derive a two-component equation for the upper spinor. This approach allows one to investigate the underlying physics in a different perspective. For particles with small mass such as the neutrino, the leading order equation has a Hermitian effective Hamiltonian, implying there is no leakage between the upper and lower spinors. In the weak relativistic regime, the leading order corresponds to a non-Hermitian correction to the Pauli equation, which takes into account the non-zero possibility of finding the lower-spinor state and offers a more precise description.

Abstract:In this paper the numerical solution of the two-dimensional sine-Gordon equation is studied. Split local artificial boundary conditions are obtained by the operator splitting method. Then the original problem is reduced to an initial boundary value problem on a bounded computational domain, which can be solved by the finite difference method. Several numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method, and some interesting propagation and collision behaviors of the solitary wave solutions are observed.

Abstract:We study a non-Hermitian variant of the (2+1)-dimensional Dirac wave equation, which hosts a real energy spectrum with pairwise-orthogonal eigenstates. In the spatially uniform case, the Hamiltonian's non-Hermitian symmetries allow its eigenstates to be mapped to a pair of Hermitian Dirac subsystems. When a wave is transmitted across an interface between two spatially uniform domains with different model parameters, an anomalous form of Klein tunneling can occur, whereby reflection is suppressed while the transmitted flux is substantially higher or lower than the incident flux. The interface can even function as a simultaneous laser and coherent perfect absorber. Remarkably, the violation of flux conservation occurs entirely at the interface, as no wave amplification or damping takes place in the bulk. Moreover, at energies within the Dirac mass gaps, the interface can support exponentially localized boundary states with real energies. These features of the continuum model can also be reproduced in non-Hermitian lattice models.

Introducing Multidimensional Dirac-Hestenes Equation

Abstract:It is easier to investigate phenomena in particle physics geometrically by exploring a real solution to the Dirac-Hestenes equation instead of a complex solution to the Dirac equation. The present research outlines the multidimensional Dirac-Hestenes equation. Since the matrix representation of the complexified (Clifford) geometric algebra $\mathbb{C}\otimes{C \kern -0.1em \ell}_{1,n}$ depends on a parity of $n$, we explore even and odd cases separately. In the geometric algebra ${C \kern -0.1em \ell}_{1,3}$, there is a lemma on a unique decomposition of an element of the minimal left ideal into the product of the idempotent and an element of the real even subalgebra. The lemma is used to construct the four-dimensional Dirac-Hestenes equation. The analogous lemma is not valid in the multidimensional case, since the dimension of the real even subalgebra of ${C \kern -0.1em \ell}_{1,n}$ is bigger than the dimension of the minimal left ideal for $n>4$. Hence, we consider the auxiliary real subalgebra of ${C \kern -0.1em \ell}_{1,n}$ to prove a similar statement. We present the multidimensional Dirac-Hestenes equation in ${C \kern -0.1em \ell}_{1,n}$. We prove that one might obtain a solution to the multidimensional Dirac-Hestenes equation using a solution to the multidimensional Dirac equation and vice versa. We also show that the multidimensional Dirac-Hestenes equation has gauge invariance.
