Abstract:We show that the lattice of compactifications of a topological group $G$ is a complete lattice which is isomorphic to the lattice of all closed normal subgroups of the Bohr compactification $bG$ of $G$. The correspondence defines a contravariant functor from the category of topological groups to the category of complete lattices. Some properties of the compactification lattice of a topological group are obtained.

Abstract:We prove that the affine closure of the cotangent bundle of the basic affine space of a complex semisimple group has conical symplectic singularities, which confirms a conjecture of Ginzburg and Kazhdan. We also show that this variety is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial and has terminal singularities.

Abstract:We introduce the BCOV formula for the lattice polarized K3 surfaces. We find that it yields cusp forms expressed by certain eta products for many families of rank 19 lattice polarized K3 surfaces over $\mathbb{P}^{1}$. Moreover, for Clingher-Doran's family of $U\oplus E_{8}(-1)\oplus E_{7}(-1)$-polarized K3 surfaces, we obtain the Igusa cusp forms $\chi_{10}$ and $\chi_{12}$ from the formula. Inspired by the arithmetic properties of mirror maps studied by Lian-Yau, we also derive the K3 differential operators for all the genus zero groups of type $\Gamma_{0}(n)_{+}$.

Lattice structure in cluster algebra of finite type and non-simply-laced Ingalls-Thomas bijection

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate that the lattice structure of a set of clusters in a cluster algebra of finite type is anti-isomorphic to the torsion lattice of a certain Geiss-Leclerc-Schröer (GLS) path algebra and to the $c$-Cambrian lattice. We prove this by explicitly describing the exchange quivers of cluster algebras of finite type. Specifically, we prove that these quivers are anti-isomorphic to those formed by support $\tau$-tilting modules in GLS path algebras and to those formed by $c$-clusters consisting of almost positive roots.

Thin Simplices via Modular Arithmetic

Abstract:The local $h^*$-polynomial is a natural invariant of a lattice polytope appearing in Ehrhart theory and Hodge theory. In this work, we study the question posed in [GKZ94] concerning the classification of lattice simplices with vanishing local $h^*$-polynomial. Such simplices are called thin. We relate this question to linear codes and hyperplane arrangements over finite rings. This allows us to obtain a complete classification of the $4$-dimensional thin simplices, extending the previously known results in dimensions up to $3$.

Volumes of Subvarieties of Complex Ball Quotients and Sparsity of Rational Points

Abstract:Let $X=\Gamma \backslash \mathbb{B}^{n} $ be an $n$-dimensional complex ball quotient by a torsion-free non-uniform lattice $\Gamma$ whose parabolic subgroups are unipotent. We prove that the volumes of subvarieties of $X$ are controlled by the systole of $X,$ which is the length of the shortest closed geodesic of $X$. There are a number of arithmetic and geometric consequences: the systole of $X$ controls the growth rate of rational points on $X,$ uniformly in the field of definition. Also, we obtain effective global generation and very ampleness results for multiples of the canonical bundle $K_{\overline{X}},$ where $\overline{X}$ is the toroidal compactification of $X.$ These results follow from the bound we find for the Seshadri constant of $K_{\overline{X}}$ in terms of the systole.

Boundedness of stable minimal models with klt singularities

Abstract:We investigate the singularities and boundedness of a special kind of algebraic varieties so-called stable minimal models, which are constructed and studied by Birkar. Given a klt stable minimal model with bounded relative volume, if we fix the dimension, Iitaka volume, and a DCC set controlling coefficients, then we show that the singularities of the klt stable minimal model can be controlled uniformly. Furthermore, we prove that with certain bounded data, stable minimal models with klt singularities form a bounded family.

Cell decomposition and dual boundary complexes of character varieties

Abstract:The weak geometric P=W conjecture of L. Katzarkov, A. Noll, P. Pandit, and C. Simpson asserts that for any smooth Betti moduli space $\mathcal{M}_B$ of complex dimension $d$ over a punctured Riemann surface, the dual boundary complex $\mathbb{D}\partial\mathcal{M}_B$ is homotopy equivalent to a $(d-1)$-dimensional sphere. Here, we consider $\mathcal{M}_B$ as a generic $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$-character variety defined on a Riemann surface of genus $g$, with local monodromies specified by generic semisimple conjugacy classes at $k$ punctures. In this article, we establish the weak geometric P=W conjecture for all \emph{very generic} $\mathcal{M}_B$ in the sense that at least one conjugacy class is regular semisimple. A crucial step is to establish a stronger form of A. Mellit's cell decomposition theorem, i.e. we decompose $\mathcal{M}_B$ (without passing to a vector bundle) into locally closed subvarieties of the form $(\mathbb{C}^{\times})^{d-2b}\times\mathcal{A}$, where $\mathcal{A}$ is stably isomorphic to $\mathbb{C}^b$. A second ingredient involves a motivic characterization of the integral cohomology of dual boundary complexes developed in a subsequent article [Su24]. Following C. Simpson's strategy, the proof is now an inductive computation of the dual boundary complexes from such a cell decomposition.

Castelnuovo bound for curves in projective 3-folds

Abstract:The Castelnuovo bound conjecture, which is proposed by physicists, predicts an effective vanishing result for Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of Calabi-Yau 3-folds of Picard number one. Previously, it is only known for a few cases and all the proofs rely on the Bogomolov-Gieseker conjecture of Bayer-Macrì-Toda. In this paper, we prove the Castelnuovo bound conjecture for any Calabi-Yau 3-folds of Picard number one, up to a linear term and finitely many degree, without assuming the conjecture of Bayer-Macrì-Toda. Furthermore, we prove an effective vanishing theorem for surface-counting invariants of Calabi-Yau 4-folds of Picard number one. We also apply our techniques to study low-degree curves on some explicit Calabi-Yau 3-folds. Our approach is based on a general iterative method to obtain upper bounds for the genus of one-dimensional closed subschemes in a fixed 3-fold, which is a combination of classical techniques and the wall-crossing of weak stability conditions on derived categories, and works for any projective 3-fold with at worst isolated singularities over any algebraically closed field.

Polymatroid Schubert varieties

Abstract:The lattice of flats $\mathcal L_M$ of a matroid $M$ is combinatorially well-behaved and, when $M$ is realizable, admits a geometric model in the form of a "matroid Schubert variety". In contrast, the lattice of flats of a polymatroid exhibits many combinatorial pathologies and admits no similar geometric model. We address this situation by defining the lattice $\mathcal L_P$ of "combinatorial flats" of a polymatroid $P$. Combinatorially, $\mathcal L_P$ exhibits good behavior analogous to that of $\mathcal L_M$: it is graded, determines $P$ when $P$ is simple, and is top-heavy. When $P$ is realizable over a field of characteristic 0, we show that $\mathcal L_P$ is modelled by a "polymatroid Schubert variety". Our work generalizes a number of results of Ardila-Boocher and Huh-Wang on matroid Schubert varieties; however, the geometry of polymatroid Schubert varieties is noticeably more complicated than that of matroid Schubert varieties. Many natural questions remain open.

Lattices, injective metrics and the $K(π,1)$ conjecture

Abstract:Starting with a lattice with an action of $\mathbb{Z}$ or $\mathbb{R}$, we build a Helly graph or an injective metric space. We deduce that the $\ell^\infty$ orthoscheme complex of any bounded graded lattice is injective. We also prove a Cartan-Hadamard result for locally injective metric spaces. We apply this to show that any Garside group or any FC type Artin group acts on an injective metric space and on a Helly graph. We also deduce that the natural piecewise $\ell^\infty$ metric on any Euclidean building of type $\tilde{A_n}$ extended, $\tilde{B_n}$, $\tilde{C_n}$ or $\tilde{D_n}$ is injective, and its thickening is a Helly graph. Concerning Artin groups of Euclidean types $\tilde{A_n}$ and $\tilde{C_n}$, we show that the natural piecewise $\ell^\infty$ metric on the Deligne complex is injective, the thickening is a Helly graph, and it admits a convex bicombing. This gives a metric proof of the $K(\pi,1)$ conjecture, as well as several other consequences usually known when the Deligne complex has a CAT(0) metric.

Abstract:In this paper we continue to study varieties of K-lattices, focusing on their bounded versions. These (bounded) commutative residuated lattices arise from a specific kind of construction: the {\em twist-product} of a lattice. Twist-products were first considered by Kalman in 1958 to deal with order involutions on plain lattices, but the extension of this concept to residuated lattices has attracted some attention lately.

Abstract:The BKT transition in low-dimensional systems with a $U(1)$ global symmetry separates a gapless conformal phase from a trivially gapped, disordered phase, and is driven by vortex proliferation. Recent developments in modified Villain discretizations provide a class of lattice models which have a $\mathbb{Z}_W$ global symmetry that counts vortices mod W, mixed 't Hooft anomalies, and persistent order even at finite lattice spacing. While there is no fully-disordered phase (except in the original BKT limit $W=1$) there is still a phase boundary which separates gapped ordered phases from gapless phases. I'll describe a numerical Monte Carlo exploration of these phenomena.

Lattices: From Roots to String Compactifications

Abstract:In this dissertation we attempt to answer the question of whether non-abelian gauge groups occur in all F-theory models with Picard number 20 and with a Calabi-Yau four-fold CY4 K3xK3. To do so we employ the Kneser-Nishiyama method to study the properties of elliptic fibrations on a K3 surface. Previously, it was found that there are 34 lattices which must be considered and the question was partially answered for one of them. Here we use results in the sphere packing problem to completely answer this question for 21 cases, and show that a negative answer to this question would constitute a new optimal lattice sphere packing in dimension 18.

A topological interpretation of the KZ system

Abstract:We show that the KZ system has a purely topological interpretation in the sense that it may be understood as a variation of complex mixed Hodge structure whose successive pure weight quotients are polarized. This in a sense completes and elucidates work of Schechtman-Varchenko done in the early 1990's. A central ingredient is a new realization of the irreducible highest weight representations of a Lie algebra of Kac-Moody type, namely on an algebra of rational polydifferentials on a countable product of Riemann spheres.

Abstract:PBZ*-lattices are bounded lattice-ordered structures endowed with two complements, called Kleene and Brouwer; by definition, they are the paraorthomodular Brouwer-Zadeh lattices in which the pairs of elements with their Kleene complements satisfy the Strong De Morgan condition. These algebras arise in the study of Quantum Logics and they form a variety PBZL* which includes orthomodular lattices with an extended signature (with the two complements coinciding), as well as antiortholattices (whose Brouwer complements are trivial). The former turn out to have directly irreducible lattice reducts and, under distributivity, no nontrivial elements with bounded lattice complements. We establish a lattice isomorphism between the lattice of subvarieties of the variety SAOL generated by the antiortholattices with the Strong De Morgan property and the ordinal sum of the three-element chain with the lattice of subvarieties of the variety PKA of pseudo-Kleene algebras, which also gives us axiomatizations for all subvarieties of SAOL from those of the subvarieties of PKA and proves that the variety PKA is generated by the class of the bounded involution lattice reducts of the members of SAOL and thus of those of any subvariety of PBZL* that includes SAOL, hence neither of these classes is a variety. We also obtain an infinity of pairwise disjoint infinite ascending chains of varieties of PBZ*-lattices, out of which one is formed of subvarieties of SAOL and another one from subvarieties of the variety of distributive PBZ*-lattices.

Structural properties of the lattice cohomology of curve singularities

Abstract:The lattice cohomology of a reduced curve singularity is a bigraded ${\mathbb Z}[U]$-module ${\mathbb H}^*=\oplus_{q,n}{\mathbb H}^q_{2n}$, that categorifies the $\delta$-invariant and extract key geometric information from the semigroup of values. In the present paper we prove three structure theorems for this new invariant: (a) the weight-grading of the reduced cohomology is (just as in the case of the topological lattice cohomology of normal surface singularities) nonpositive; (b) the graded ${\mathbb Z}[U]$-module structure of ${\mathbb H}^0$ determines whether or not a given curve is Gorenstein; and finally (c) the lattice cohomology module ${\mathbb H}^0$ of any plane curve singularity determines its multiplicity.
