Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of solutions to the centroaffine Minkowski problem, namely the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space R n + 1 \mathbb {R}^{n+1} with prescribed centroaffine curvature. This problem can be described as a variational problem with a functional resembling Kantorovich’s dual functional in optimal transportation. By using the Gauss curvature flow, we obtain new conditions for the existence of solutions to the problem.

Abstract:An n-dimensional lambda-hypersurface X : M -> Rn+1 is the critical point of the weighted area functional integral(M) e(-1/4|X|2) d mu for weighted volume-preserving variations, which is also a generalization of the self-shrinking solution of the mean curvature flow. We first prove that if the L-n-norm of the second fundamental form of the lambda-hypersurface X : M -> Rn+1 with n >= 3 is less than an explicit positive constant K(n, lambda), then M is a hyperplane. Secondly, we show that if the L-n-norm of the trace-free second fundamental form of M with n >= 3 is less than an explicit positive constant D(n, lambda) and the mean curvature is suitably bounded, then M is a hyperplane. We also obtain similar results for lambda-surfaces in R-3 under L-4-curvature pinching conditions.

Abstract:In terms of the almost complex connection and the unitary moving frame, a complex version on the theory of the nearly Kahler structure in S-6 is given. Under this framework, minimal surfaces in the nearly Kahler S-6 are studied. A complete classification for complete minimal surfaces in S-6 With constant Kahler angle and nonnegative curvature is given. Moreover, almost complex curves in S-6 are considered.

Abstract:Freeness is an important property of a hypersurface arrangement, although its presence is not well understood. A hypersurface arrangement in $\PP^n$ is free if $S/J$ is Cohen-Macaulay (CM), where $S = K[x_0,\ldots,x_n]$ and $J$ is the Jacobian ideal. We study three related unmixed ideals: $J^{top}$, the intersection of height two primary components, $\sqrt{J^{top}}$, the radical of $J^{top}$, and when the $f_i$ are smooth we also study $\sqrt{J}$. Under mild hypotheses, we show that these ideals are CM. This establishes a full generalization of an earlier result with Schenck from hyperplane arrangements to hypersurface arrangements. If the hypotheses fail for an arrangement in projective $3$-space, the Hartshorne-Rao module measures the failure of CMness. We establish consequences for the even liaison classes of $J^{top}$ and $\sqrt{J}$.

Abstract:We study the algebraic hyperbolicity of the complement of very general degree $2n$ hypersurfaces in P^n. We prove the Algebraic Green-Griffiths-Lang Conjecture for these complements, and in the case of the complement of a quartic plane curve, we completely characterize the exceptional locus as the union of the flex and bitangent lines.

Abstract:We develop novel tools for computing the likelihood correspondence of an arrangement of hypersurfaces in a projective space. This uses the module of logarithmic derivations. This object is well-studied in the linear case, when the hypersurfaces are hyperplanes. We here focus on nonlinear scenarios and their applications in statistics and physics.

Abstract:Several papers have been written studying unexpected hypersurfaces. We say a finite set of points Z admits unexpected hypersurfaces if a general union of fat linear subspaces imposes less that the expected number of conditions on the ideal of Z. In this paper, we introduce the concept of a very unexpected hypersurface. This is a stronger condition which takes into account an explanation for some hypersurfaces previously considered unexpected. We then develop a duality theory to relate the study of very unexpected hypersurfaces to the derivations of dual hyperplane arrangements. This allows us to generalize results in the plane of Cook, Harbourne, Migliore, Nagel Faenzi, and Vallés to higher dimensions. In particular, we give a criterion to determine if a set Z admits very unexpected hypersurfaces in the case Z is invariant under the action of an irreducible reflection group on the ambient projective space. Our approach has new applications even in the projective plane where we are able to place strong conditions on sets of points Z which admit certain types of unexpected curves. We close relating Terao's Freeness Conjecture for line arrangements to a conjecture due to G. Dirac on configurations of points in the real plane.

Abstract:We investigate the problem of holomorphic algebraizibility for real hypersurfaces in complex space. We introduce a new invariant of a (real-analytic) Levi-nondegenerate hypersurface called {\em the jet transcendence degree}. Using this invariant, we solve in the negative the Conjecture of Huang, Ji and Yau on the algabraizability of real hypersurfaces with algebraic syzygies.

Abstract:A generalisation of Waring's problem, considered first by Arkhipov and Karatsuba, is the question of representing not an integer, but a given polynomial, as a sum of powers of linear polynomials. We investigate a related problem and prove a Hasse principle for the number of identical representations of a set of given forms by homogeneous polynomials of general shape. The result leads to sizeable improvements for estimates of the number of linear spaces on the intersection of hypersurfaces.

Abstract:We show that the characteristic polynomial of a hyperplane arrangement can be recovered from the class in the Grothendieck group of varieties of the complement of the arrangement. This gives a quick proof of a theorem of Orlik and Solomon relating the characteristic polynomial with the ranks of the cohomology of the complement of the arrangement. We also show that the characteristic polynomial can be computed from the total Chern class of the complement of the arrangement; this has also been observed by Huh. In the case of free arrangements, we prove that this Chern class agrees with the Chern class of the dual of a bundle of differential forms with logarithmic poles along the hyperplanes in the arrangement; this follows from work of Mustata and Schenck. We conjecture that this relation holds for all free divisors. We give an explicit relation between the characteristic polynomial of an arrangement and the Segre class of its singularity (`Jacobian') subscheme. This gives a variant of a recent result of Wakefield and Yoshinaga, and shows that the Segre class of the singularity subscheme of an arrangement together with the degree of the arrangement determine the ranks of the cohomology of its complement. We also discuss the positivity of the Chern classes of hyperplane arrangements: we give a combinatorial interpretation of this phenomenon, and we discuss the cases of generic and free arrangements.

Abstract:The Euler characteristic of a very affine variety encodes the algebraic complexity of solving likelihood (or scattering) equations on this variety. We study this quantity for the Grassmannian with $d$ hyperplane sections removed. We provide a combinatorial formula, and explain how to compute this Euler characteristic in practice, both symbolically and numerically. Our particular focus is on generic hyperplane sections and on Schubert divisors. We also consider special Schubert arrangements relevant for physics. We study both the complex and the real case.

Hypersurfaces with large automorphism groups

Abstract:We find sharp upper bounds on the order of the automorphism group of a hypersurface in complex projective space in every dimension and degree. In each case, we prove that the hypersurface realizing the upper bound is unique up to isomorphism and provide explicit generators for the automorphism group. Similar results were recently proven independently by S. Yang, X. Yu, and Z. Zhu using different methods.

Abstract:An embedding of the complete bipartite graph $K_{3,3}$ in $\mathbb{P}^2$ gives rise to both a line arrangement and a bar-and-joint framework. For a generic placement of the six vertices, the graded Betti numbers of the logarithmic module of derivations of the line arrangement are constant, but an example due to Ziegler shows that the graded Betti numbers are different when the points lie on a conic. Similarly, in rigidity theory a generic embedding of $K_{3,3}$ in the plane is an infinitesimally rigid bar-and-joint framework, but the framework is infinitesimally flexible when the points lie on a conic. In this paper we develop the theory of weak perspective representations of hyperplane arrangements to formalize and generalize the striking connection between hyperplane arrangements and rigidity theory that this example suggests. In particular, we seek to understand how the interplay of combinatorics and geometry influence algebraic structures associated to an arrangement, such as the saturation of the Jacobian ideal of the arrangement. We make connections between examples and constructions from rigidity theory and interesting phenomena in the study of hyperplane arrangements.

Abstract:The following generalization of a result of S. Nemirovski is proved: if $X$ is either a projective or a Stein manifold and $K\subset X$ is a compact sublevel set of a strictly plurisubharmonic function $\varphi$ defined in a neighborhood of $K$, then $X\setminus K$ is a union of positive divisors if and only if $dd^c\varphi$ extends to a Hodge form on $X$. For an arbitrary compact subset $K\subsetneq X$, this gives that $X\setminus K$ is a union of positive divisors if and only if $K$ admits a neighbourhood basis of sublevel sets of strictly plurisubharmonic functions with the $dd^c$-extension property.

IVHS via Kuznetsov components and categorical Torelli theorems for weighted hypersurfaces

Abstract:We study the categorical Torelli theorem for smooth (weighted) hypersurfaces in (weighted) projective spaces via the Hochschild--Serre algebra of its Kuznetsov component. In the first part of the paper, we show that a natural graded subalgebra of the Hochschild--Serre algebra of the Kuznetsov component of a degree $d$ weighted hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}(a_0,\ldots,a_n)$ reconstructs the graded subalgebra of the Jacobian ring generated by the degree $t:=\mathrm{gcd}(d,\Sigma_{i=0}^na_i)$ piece under mild assumptions. Using results of Donagi and Cox--Green, this gives a categorical Torelli theorem for most smooth hypersurfaces $Y$ of degree $d \le n$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$ such that $d$ does not divide $n+1$ (the exception being the cases of the form $(d,n) = (4, 4k + 2)$, for which a result of Voisin lets us deduce a generic categorical Torelli theorem when $k \ge 150$). Next, we show that the Jacobian ring of the Veronese double cone can be reconstructed from its graded subalgebra of even degree, thus proving a categorical Torelli theorem for the Veronese double cone. In the second part, we rebuild the infinitesimal Variation of Hodge structures of a series of (weighted) hypersurfaces from their Kuznetsov components via the Hochschild--Serre algebra. As a result, we prove categorical Torelli theorems for two classes of (weighted) hypersurfaces: $(1):$ Generalized Veronese double cone; $(2):$ Certain $k$-sheeted covering of $\mathbb{P}^n$, when they are generic. Then, we prove a refined categorical Torelli theorem for a Fano variety whose Kuznetsov component is a Calabi--Yau category of dimension $2m+1$. Finally, we prove the actual categorical Torelli theorem for generalized Veronese double cone and $k$-sheeted covering of $\mathbb{P}^n$.

In this paper, the possible shape operators for stark hypersurfaces are completely determined, and stark hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb C}P^2$ are constructed as integrals of a Frobenius exterior differential system.

Abstract:A graph $H$ is an immersion of a graph $G$ if $H$ can be obtained by some sugraph $G$ after lifting incident edges. We prove that there is a polynomial function $f:\Bbb{N}\times\Bbb{N}\rightarrow\Bbb{N}$, such that if $H$ is a connected planar subcubic graph on $h>0$ edges, $G$ is a graph, and $k$ is a non-negative integer, then either $G$ contains $k$ vertex/edge-disjoint subgraphs, each containing $H$ as an immersion, or $G$ contains a set $F$ of $f(k,h)$ vertices/edges such that $G\setminus F$ does not contain $H$ as an immersion.

Abstract:Let $k$ be any field. Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}_k^N$ be a degree $d \geq 2$ hypersurface. Under some conditions, we prove that if $X(K) \neq \emptyset$ for some extension $K/k$ with $n:=[K:k] \geq 2$ and $\gcd(n,d)=1$, then $X(L) \neq \emptyset$ for some extension $L/k$ with $\gcd([L:k], d)=1$, $n \nmid [L:k]$, and $[L:k] \leq nd-n-d$. Moreover, if a $K$-solution is known explicitly, then we can compute $L/k$ explicitly as well. As an application, we improve upon a result by Coray on smooth cubic surfaces $X \subset \mathbb{P}^3_k$ by showing that if $X(K) \neq \emptyset$ for some extension $K/k$ with $\gcd([K:k], 3)=1$, then $X(L) \neq \emptyset$ for some $L/k$ with $[L:k] \in \{1, 10\}$.
