Abstract:In this paper it is proved that the group $F\left(\frac32\right)$, a Thompson-style group with breaks in $\mathbb{Z}\left[\frac16\right]$ but whose slopes are restricted only to powers of $\frac32$, is finitely generated, with a generating set of two elements.

Abstract:We show that the generation problem in Thompson group $F$ is decidable, i.e., there is an algorithm which decides if a finite set of elements of $F$ generates the whole $F$. The algorithm makes use of the Stallings $2$-core of subgroups of $F$, which can be defined in an analogue way to the Stallings core of subgroups of a finitely generated free group. Further study of the Stallings $2$-core of subgroups of $F$ provides a solution to another algorithmic problem in $F$. Namely, given a finitely generated subgroup $H$ of $F$, it is decidable if $H$ acts transitively on the set of finite dyadic fractions $\mathcal D$. Other applications of the study include the construction of new maximal subgroups of $F$ of infinite index, among which, a maximal subgroup of infinite index which acts transitively on the set $\mathcal D$ and the construction of an elementary amenable subgroup of $F$ which is maximal in a normal subgroup of $F$.

Abstract:Every finite simple group can be generated by two elements and, in fact, every nontrivial element is contained in a generating pair. Groups with this property are said to be $\frac{3}{2}$-generated, and the finite $\frac{3}{2}$-generated groups were recently classified. Turning to infinite groups, in this paper, we prove that the finitely presented simple group $T$ of Thompson is $\frac{3}{2}$-generated. Moreover, we exhibit an element $\zeta \in T$ such that for any nontrivial $\alpha \in T$, there exists $\gamma \in T$ such that $\langle \alpha, \zeta^\gamma \rangle = T$.

Abstract:Recall that a group $G$ is said to be $\frac{3}{2}$-generated if every non-trivial element $g\in G$ has a co-generator in $G$ (i.e., an element which together with $g$ generates $G$). Thompson's group $V$ was proved to be $\frac{3}{2}$-generated by Donoven and Harper in 2019. It was the first example of an infinite finitely presented non-cyclic $\frac{3}{2}$-generated group. In 2022, Bleak, Harper and Skipper proved that Thompson's group $T$ is also $\frac{3}{2}$-generated. Since the abelianization of Thompson's group $F$ is $\mathbb{Z}$, it cannot be $\frac{3}{2}$-generated. However, we recently proved that Thompson's group $F$ is "almost" $\frac{3}{2}$-generated in the sense that every element of $F$ whose image in the abelianization forms part of a generating pair of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ is part of a generating pair of $F$. A natural generalization of $\frac{3}{2}$-generation is the notion of spread. Recall that the spread of a group $G$ is the supremum over all integers $k$ such that every $k$ non-trivial elements of $G$ have a common co-generator in $G$. The uniform spread of a group $G$ is the supremum over all integers $k$ for which there exists a conjugacy class $C\subseteq G$ such that every $k$ non-trivial elements of $G$ have a common co-generator which belongs to $C$. In this paper we study modified versions of these notions for Thompson's group $F$.

Abstract:We describe a procedure for constructing a generalized Thompson group out of a family of groups that is equipped with what we call a cloning system. The previously known Thompson groups F, V, Vbr and Fbr arise from this procedure using, respectively, the systems of trivial groups, symmetric groups, braid groups and pure braid groups. We give new examples of families of groups that admit a cloning system and study how the finiteness properties of the resulting generalized Thompson group depend on those of the original groups. The main new examples here include upper triangular matrix groups, mock reflection groups, and loop braid groups. For generalized Thompson groups of upper triangular matrix groups over rings of S-integers of global function fields, we develop new methods for (dis-)proving finiteness properties, and show that the finiteness length of the generalized Thompson group is exactly the limit inferior of the finiteness lengths of the groups in the family.

Abstract:We discuss a central limit theorem in the framework of the group algebra of the Thompson group $F$. We consider the sequence of self-adjoint elements given by $a_n=\frac{g_n+g_n^{*}}{\sqrt{2}}$ in the noncommutative probability space $(\mathbb{C}(F),\varphi)$, where the expectation functional $\varphi$ is the trace associated to the left regular representation of $F$, and the $g_n$-s are the generators of $F$ in its standard infinite presentation. We show that the limit law of the sequence $s_n = \frac{a_0+\cdots+a_{n-1}}{\sqrt{n}}$ is the standard normal distribution.

On zero-measured subsets of Thompson's group F

Abstract:A (discrete) group is called amenable whenever there exists a finitely additive right invariant probablity measure on it. For Thompson's group $F$ the problem whether it is amenable is a long-standing open question. We consider presentation of $F$ in terms of non-spherical semigroup diagrams. There is a natural partition of $F$ into 7 parts in terms of these diagrams. We show that for any measure with the above properties on $F$, all but one of these sets have zero measure. This helps to clarify the structure of Folner sets in $F$ provided the group is amenable.

Abstract:In this note we prove the following results: $\bullet$ If a finitely presented group $G$ admits a strongly aperiodic SFT, then $G$ has decidable word problem. More generally, for f.g. groups that are not recursively presented, there exists a computable obstruction for them to admit strongly aperiodic SFTs. $\bullet$ On the positive side, we build strongly aperiodic SFTs on some new classes of groups. We show in particular that some particular monster groups admits strongly aperiodic SFTs for trivial reasons. Then, for a large class of group $G$, we show how to build strongly aperiodic SFTs over $\mathbb{Z}\times G$. In particular, this is true for the free group with 2 generators, Thompson's groups $T$ and $V$, $PSL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and any f.g. group of rational matrices which is bounded.

Abstract:Finite groups $G$ such that $G/Z(G) \simeq C_2 \times C_2$ where $C_2$ denotes a cyclic group of order 2 and $Z(G)$ is the center of $G$ were studied in \cite{casofinito} and were used to classify finite loops with alternative loop algebras. In this paper we extend this result to finitely generated groups such that $G/Z(G) \simeq C_p \times C_p$ where $C_p$ denotes a cyclic group of prime order $p$ and provide an explicit description of all such groups.

Abstract:We prove finiteness properties for groups of homeomorphisms that have finitely many "singular points", and we describe the normal structure of such groups. As an application, we prove that every countable abelian group can be embedded into a finitely presented simple group, verifying the Boone-Higman conjecture for countable abelian groups. Indeed, we describe a specific 2-generated, $\mathrm{F}_\infty$ simple group $V\mathcal{A}$ of homeomorphisms of the Cantor set that contains every countable abelian group. As a second application, we prove that if $G$ is a bounded automata group then the associated Röver-Nekrashevych groups $V_{d,r}G$ have type $\mathrm{F}_\infty$, verifying a conjecture of Nekrashevych for a large class of contracting self-similar groups. Among others, this result applies to Röver-Nekrashevych groups associated to Gupta-Sidki groups and the basilica group.

On the spectrum of residual finiteness growth functions

Abstract:In [K. Bou-Rabee, B. Seward, J. Reine Angwe. Math. 2016] Bou-Rabee and Seward constructed examples of finitely generated residually finite groups $G$ whose residual finiteness growth function $\mathcal{F}_G$ can be at least as fast as any prescribed function. In this note we describe a modified version of their construction, which allows us to give a complementary upper bound on $\mathcal{F}_G$. As such, every nondecreasing function at least $\exp ( n \log (n)^2 \log \log (n)^{1+\epsilon} )$ is close to the residual finiteness growth function of some finitely generated group. We also have similar result for the full residual finiteness growth function and for the divisibility function.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to describe the structure of the finitely generated subgroups of a family of branch groups, which includes the first Grigorchuk group and the Gupta-Sidki 3-group. This description is made via the notion of block subgroup. We then use this to show that all groups in the above family are subgroup separable (LERF). These results are obtained as a corollary of a more general structural statement on subdirect products of just infinite groups.

Abstract:A classical problem, raised by Fuchs in 1960, asks to classify the abelian groups which are groups of units of some rings. In this paper, we consider the case of finitely generated abelian groups, solving Fuchs' problem for such group with the additional assumption that the torsion subgroups are small, for a suitable notion of small related to the Prüfer rank. As a concrete instance, we classify for each $n\ge2$ the realisable groups of the form $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}^r$. Our tools require an investigation of the adjoint group of suitable radical rings of odd prime power order appearing in the picture, giving conditions under which the additive and adjoint groups are isomorphic. In the last section, we also deal with some groups of order a power of $2$, proving that the groups of the form $\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}/2^{u}\mathbb{Z}$ are realisable if and only if $0\le u\le 3$ or $2^u+1$ is a Fermat's prime.

Finite quotients of Fuchsian groups

Abstract:This work provides an effective algorithm for distinguishing finite quotients between two non-isomorphic finitely generated Fuchsian groups $\Gamma$ and $\Lambda$. It will suffice to take a finite quotient which is abelian, dihedral, a subgroup of $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbf{F}_q)$, or an abelian extension of one of these 3. We will develop an approach for creating group extensions upon a shared finite quotient of $\Gamma$ and $\Lambda$ which between them have differing degrees of smoothness. Regarding the order of a finite quotient that distinguishes between $\Gamma$ and $\Lambda$, we establish an upperbound as a function of the genera, the number of punctures, and the cone orders arising in $\Gamma$ and $\Lambda$.

Abstract:We prove that any finitely generated subgroup of the plane Cremona group consisting only of algebraic elements is of bounded degree. This follows from a more general result on `decent' actions on infinite direct sums. We apply our results to describe the degree growth of finitely generated subgroups of the plane Cremona group.

Finiteness properties of generalized Thompson groups via expansion sets

Abstract:We outline a general procedure that builds classifying spaces for generalized Thompson groups $\Gamma$. The construction depends on a small number of choices: (1) an inverse semigroup $S$ of partial transformations that ``locally determine" $\Gamma$; (2) an equivalence relation on certain pairs $(f,D)$, and (3) an ``expansion" rule $\mathcal{E}$. These choices determine an \emph{expansion set} $\mathcal{B}$, which is a combinatorial device that outputs a simplicial complex $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ upon which $\Gamma$ acts. Under favorable conditions, often achieved in practice, $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ is contractible, and the action of $\Gamma$ has small stabilizers. The definition of $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ is such that ascending and descending links in $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ can be described via formulas that depend only on the expansion rule $\mathcal{E}$. The result is to facilitate the usual computations of the connectivity of the descending link. Under natural hypotheses, one can prove that the acting group has type $F_{\infty}$. The net effect of our results is to automate results of this kind. Several applications are given; in particular, we sketch unified proofs that $V$, $nV$, Röver's group $G$, and the Lodha-Moore group have type $F_{\infty}$.

Abstract:Thompson's theorem stated that a finite group $G$ is solvable if and only if every $2$-generated subgroup of $G$ is solvable. In this paper, we prove some new criteria for both solvability and nilpotency of a finite group using certain condition on $2$-generated subgroups. We show that a finite group $G$ is solvable if and only if for every pair of two elements $x$ and $y$ in $G$ of coprime prime power order, if $\langle x,y\rangle$ is solvable, then $\langle x,y^g\rangle$ is solvable for all $g\in G$. Similarly, a finite group $G$ is nilpotent if and only if for every pair of elements $x$ and $y$ in $G$ of coprime prime power order, if $\langle x,y\rangle$ is solvable, then $x$ and $y^g$ commute for some $g\in G.$ Some applications to graphs defined on groups are given.

Abstract:As defined by Guralnick and Saxl given a nonabelian simple group $S$ and its nonidentity automorphism $x$, a natural number $\alpha_S(x)$ does not exceed a natural number $m$ if some $m$ conjugates of $x$ in the group $\langle x,S\rangle$ generate a subgroup that includes $S$. The outcome of this paper together with one by Di Martino, Pellegrini, and Zalesski, both of which are based on computer calculations with character tables, is a refinement of the estimates by Guralnick and Saxl on the value of $\alpha_S(x)$ in the case where $S$ is a sporadic group. In particular, we prove that $\alpha_S(x)\leqslant 4$, except when $S$ is one of the Fischer groups and $x$ is a $3$-transposition. In the latter case, $\alpha_S(x)=6$ if $S$ is either $Fi_{22}$ or $Fi_{23}$ and $\alpha_S(x)=5$ if $S={Fi_{24}}'$.

Abstract:We provide new examples of groups without rational cross-sections (also called regular normal forms), using connections with bounded generation and rational orders on groups. Specifically, our examples are extensions of infinite torsion groups, groups of Grigorchuk type, wreath products similar to $C_2\wr(C_2\wr \mathbb Z)$ and $\mathbb Z\wr F_2$, a group of permutations of $\mathbb Z$, and a finitely presented HNN extension of the first Grigorchuk group. This last group is the first example of finitely presented group with solvable word problem and without rational cross-sections. It is also not autostackable, and has no left-regular complete rewriting system.
