Abstract:To enhance the understanding of air quality within underground railway stations (URS), a methodology has been developed to establish a baseline profile of particle concentrations (PM10 and PM2.5). This approach incorporates an extensive data cleaning process based on the identification of URS operation periods, physically inconsistent or mathematically aberrant data, and comparing the profile of each day to an average profile. The versatility of this methodology allows its application to different particle classes within various URS. The results obtained from the three studied URS indicate the possibility of obtaining reliable daily typical profiles even over short measurement periods (up to one or two weeks).

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to address the issue of air quality within the Paris Underground Railway Stations (URS). Specifically, the study aims to establish a typical daily variation pattern of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) concentrations. Through this approach, researchers hope to better understand the air quality variations within underground railway stations and provide benchmark data for evaluating the effectiveness of air filtration systems. ### Main Objectives: 1. **Establish Reference Concentration Patterns**: Develop a method to determine the typical daily variation patterns of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) within underground railway stations. 2. **Data Cleaning**: Employ advanced data cleaning processes to exclude data from specific time periods (such as strikes, pandemic lockdowns, etc.), as well as physically unreasonable or mathematically anomalous data points. 3. **Broad Applicability**: Ensure that the method can be applied to different types of particulate matter and various underground railway stations. 4. **Effectiveness of Short-term Measurements**: Validate that reliable typical daily variation patterns can be obtained even within shorter measurement periods (such as 1 to 2 weeks). ### Background Information: - The concentration of particulate matter within metro stations is significantly higher than that in outdoor air, even exceeding the World Health Organization (WHO) standards by many times. - These high concentrations of particulate matter pose a serious threat to public health. - The French National Railway Company (SNCF) is considering installing air filtration systems to improve air quality. ### Research Findings: - Through detailed data processing and analysis, researchers successfully established typical daily variation patterns for different types of underground railway stations. - These patterns remain highly reliable even over shorter time periods. - There are significant differences in the particulate matter concentration variation patterns among different metro stations, necessitating further analysis of various influencing factors such as station design, ventilation systems, etc. Through this study, researchers have provided important reference data for subsequent evaluations of the effectiveness of air filtration systems.
