Abstract:In this paper, we consider sums of values of degenerate falling factorials and give a probabilistic proof of a recurrence relation for them. This may be viewed as a degenerate version of the recent probabilistic proofs on sums of powers of integers.

Abstract:Let Y be a random variable whose degenerate moment generating functions exist in some neighborhoods of the origin. The aim of this paper is to study the probabilistic degenerate Stirling numbers of the first kind associated with Y which are constructed from the degenerate cumulant generating function of Y. They are a degenerate version of the probabilistic Stirling numbers of the first kind associated with Y, which were recently introduced by Adell-Benyi. We investigate some properties, related identities, recurrence relations and explicit expressions for those numbers. In addition, we apply our results to the special cases of normal and gamma random variables.

Abstract:For integer $k \geq 1$, let $S_k(n)$ denote the sum of the $k$th powers of the first $n$ positive integers $1^k + 2^k + \cdots + n^k$. In this paper, we derive a new formula expressing $2^{2k}$ times $S_{2k}(n)$ as a sum of $k$ terms involving the numbers in the $k$th row of the integer sequence A304330, which is closely related to the central factorial numbers of the second kind with even indices. Furthermore, we provide an alternative proof of Knuth's formula for $S_{2k}(n)$ and show that it can equally be expressed in terms of A304330. We also deduce the corresponding formulas for the odd-indexed power sums $S_{2k-1}(n)$. Finally, we determine the Faulhaber form of $S_{2k}(n)$ and $S_{2k+1}(n)$ in terms of the sequence A304330 and the Legendre-Stirling numbers of the first kind.

Abstract:Recently, many authors have studied degenerate Bernoulli and degenerate Euler polynomials. Let Y be a random variable whose moment generating function exists in a neighbourhood of the origin. The aim of this paper is to introduce and study the probabilistic extension of degenerate Bernoulli and degenerate Euler polynomials, namely the probabilistic degenerate Bernoulli polynomials associated with Y and the probabilistic degenerate Euler polynomials associated with Y . Also, we intoduce the probabilistic degenerate r -Stirling numbers of the second associated with Y and the probabilistic degenerate two variable Fubini polynomials associated with Y . We obtain some properties, explicit expressions, recurrence relations and certain identities for those polynomials and numbers. As special cases of Y , we treat the gamma random variable with parameters α,β>0 , the Poisson random variable with parameter α>0 , and the Bernoulli random variable with probability of success p .

We derive some properties, explicit expressions, certain identities, recurrence relations and generating functions for those numbers and polynomials. In addition, we investigate their generalizations, namely the probabilistic degenerate r-Whitney numbers of the second kind associated with Y and the probabilistic degenerate r-Dowling polynomials associated with Y, and get similar results to the aforementioned numbers and polynomials.

Abstract:Zeckendorf's theorem states every positive integer has a unique decomposition as a sum of non-adjacent Fibonacci numbers. This result has been generalized to many sequences $\{a_n\}$ arising from an integer positive linear recurrence, each of which has a corresponding notion of a legal decomposition. Previous work proved the number of summands in decompositions of $m \in [a_n, a_{n+1})$ becomes normally distributed as $n\to\infty$, and the individual gap measures associated to each $m$ converge to geometric random variables, when the leading coefficient in the recurrence is positive. We explore what happens when this assumption is removed in two special sequences. In one we regain all previous results, including unique decomposition; in the other the number of legal decompositions exponentially grows and the natural choice for the legal decomposition (the greedy algorithm) only works approximately 92.6\% of the time (though a slight modification always works). We find a connection between the two sequences, which explains why the distribution of the number of summands and gaps between summands behave the same in the two examples. In the course of our investigations we found a new perspective on dealing with roots of polynomials associated to the characteristic polynomials. This allows us to remove the need for the detailed technical analysis of their properties which greatly complicated the proofs of many earlier results in the subject, as well as handle new cases beyond the reach of existing techniques.

Abstract:Many important special numbers appear in the expansions of some polynomials in terms of central factorials and vice versa, for example central factorial numbers, degenerate central factorial numbers, and central Lah numbers which are recently introduced. Here we generalize this to any sequence of polynomials. Let P be the space of a sequence of polynomials such that the degree of the polynomials less than n . The aim of this paper is to study the central factorial numbers of the second associated with P and of the first kind associated with P, in a unified and systematic way with the help of umbral calculus technique. The central factorial numbers associated with P enjoy orthogonality and inverse relations. We illustrate our results with many examples and obtain interesting orthogonality and inverse relations by applying such relations for the central factorial numbers associated with P to each of our examples.

Sums of powers of integers via differentiation

Abstract:For integer $k \geq 0$, let $S_k$ denote the sum of the $k$th powers of the first $n$ positive integers $1^k + 2^k + \cdots + n^k$. For any given $k$, the power sum $S_k$ can in principle be determined by differentiating $k$ times (with respect to $x$) the associated exponential generating function $\sum_{k=0}^{\infty}S_k x^k/k!$, and then taking the limit of the resulting differentiated function as $x$ approaches $0$. In this paper, we exploit this method to establish a couple of seemingly novel recurrence relations, one of them involving the even-indexed power sums $S_2, S_4,\ldots, S_{2k}$, and the other the odd-indexed power sums $S_{1}, S_3, \ldots, S_{2k-1}$, with both recurrence relations depending explicitly on the parameter $N = n + \frac{1}{2}$. From this, we obtain a determinantal formula of order $k$ which yields $S_{2k}$ [$S_{2k-1}$] in the Faulhaber form, that is, as an odd [even] polynomial in $N$. As a byproduct, we discover a new determinantal formula for the Bernoulli number $B_{2k}$. Furthermore, we show that $S_{2k}$ and $S_{2k-1}$ can be obtained by taking the corresponding higher order derivatives of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

Abstract:We introduce the generalized degenerate Euler-Genocchi polynomials as a degenerate version of the Euler-Genocchi polynomials. In addition, we introduce their higher-order version, namely the generalized degenerate Euler-Genocchi polynomials of order {\alpha}, as a degenerate version of the generalized Euler-Genocchi polynomials of order {\alpha}. The aim of this paper is to study certain properties and identities involving those polynomials, the generalized falling factorials, the degenerate Euler polynomials of order {\alpha}, the degenerate Stirling numbers of the second kind, and the alternating degenerate power sum of integers.
