Abstract:Motivated by a question of V. Bergelson and F. K. Richter (2017), we obtain asymptotic formulas for the number of relatively prime tuples composed of positive integers $n\le N$ and integer parts of polynomials evaluated at $n$. The error terms in our formulas are of various strengths depending on the Diophantine properties of the leading coefficients of these polynomials.

Abstract:Gcd-graphs over the ring of integers modulo $n$ are a simple and elegant class of integral graphs. The study of these graphs connects multiple areas of mathematics, including graph theory, number theory, and ring theory. In a recent work, inspired by the analogy between number fields and function fields, we define and study gcd-graphs over polynomial rings with coefficients in finite fields. We discover that, in both cases, gcd-graphs share many similar and analogous properties. In this article, we extend this line of research further. Among other topics, we explore an analog of a conjecture of So and a weaker version of Sander-Sander, concerning the conditions under which two gcd-graphs are isomorphic or isospectral. We also provide several constructions showing that, unlike the case over $\mathbb{Z}$, it is not uncommon for two gcd-graphs over polynomial rings to be isomorphic.

Abstract:Gcd-graphs over the ring of integers modulo $n$ are a natural generalization of unitary Cayley graphs. The study of these graphs has foundations in various mathematical fields, including number theory, ring theory, and representation theory. Using the theory of Ramanujan sums, it is known that these gcd-graphs have integral spectra; i.e., all their eigenvalues are integers. In this work, inspired by the analogy between number fields and function fields, we define and study gcd-graphs over polynomial rings with coefficients in finite fields. We establish some fundamental properties of these graphs, emphasizing their analogy to their counterparts over $\mathbb{Z}.$

Abstract:In this paper, we tackle the following problem: compute the gcd for several univariate polynomials with parametric coefficients. It amounts to partitioning the parameter space into ``cells'' so that the gcd has a uniform expression over each cell and constructing a uniform expression of gcd in each cell. We tackle the problem as follows. We begin by making a natural and obvious extension of subresultant polynomials of two polynomials to several polynomials. Then we develop the following structural theories about them. 1. We generalize Sylvester's theory to several polynomials, in order to obtain an elegant relationship between generalized subresultant polynomials and the gcd of several polynomials, yielding an elegant algorithm. 2. We generalize Habicht's theory to several polynomials, in order to obtain a systematic relationship between generalized subresultant polynomials and pseudo-remainders, yielding an efficient algorithm. Using the generalized theories, we present a simple (structurally elegant) algorithm which is significantly more efficient (both in the output size and computing time) than algorithms based on previous approaches.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.
Averages of arithmetic functions over polynomials in many variables

Abstract:We estimate the average of any arithmetic function $k$ over the values of any smooth polynomial in many variables provided only that $k$ has a distribution in arithmetic progressions of fixed modulus. We give several applications of this result including the analytic Hasse principle for an intersection of two cubics in 21 variables and asymptotics for the number of integer solutions of a non-algebraic variety.

Abstract:For relatively prime natural numbers $a$ and $b$, we study the two equations $ax+by = (a-1)(b-1)/2$ and $ax+by+1= (a-1)(b-1)/2$, which arise from the study of cyclotomic polynomials. Previous work showed that exactly one equation has a nonnegative solution, and the solution is unique. Our first result gives criteria to determine which equation is used for a given pair $(a,b)$. We then use the criteria to study the sequence of equations used by the pair $(a_n/\gcd{(a_n, a_{n+1})}, a_{n+1}/\gcd{(a_n, a_{n+1})})$ from several special sequences $(a_n)_{n\geq 1}$. Finally, fixing $k \in \mathbb{N}$, we investigate the periodicity of the sequence of equations used by the pair $(k/\gcd{(k, n)}, n/\gcd{(k, n)})$ as $n$ increases.

Integer Programming with GCD Constraints

Abstract:We study the non-linear extension of integer programming with greatest common divisor constraints of the form $\gcd(f,g) \sim d$, where $f$ and $g$ are linear polynomials, $d$ is a positive integer, and $\sim$ is a relation among $\leq, =, \neq$ and $\geq$. We show that the feasibility problem for these systems is in NP, and that an optimal solution minimizing a linear objective function, if it exists, has polynomial bit length. To show these results, we identify an expressive fragment of the existential theory of the integers with addition and divisibility that admits solutions of polynomial bit length. It was shown by Lipshitz [Trans. Am. Math. Soc., 235, pp. 271-283, 1978] that this theory adheres to a local-to-global principle in the following sense: a formula $\Phi$ is equi-satisfiable with a formula $\Psi$ in this theory such that $\Psi$ has a solution if and only if $\Psi$ has a solution modulo every prime $p$. We show that in our fragment, only a polynomial number of primes of polynomial bit length need to be considered, and that the solutions modulo prime numbers can be combined to yield a solution to $\Phi$ of polynomial bit length. As a technical by-product, we establish a Chinese-remainder-type theorem for systems of congruences and non-congruences showing that solution sizes do not depend on the magnitude of the moduli of non-congruences.

Abstract:In [GTZ08, GTZ12], the following result was established: given polynomials $f,g\in\mathbb{C}[x]$ of degrees larger than $1$, if there exist $\alpha,\beta\in\mathbb{C}$ such that their corresponding orbits $\mathcal{O}_f(\alpha)$ and $\mathcal{O}_g(\beta)$ (under the action of $f$, respectively of $g$) intersect in infinitely many points, then $f$ and $g$ must share a common iterate, i.e., $f^m=g^n$ for some $m,n\in\mathbb{N}$. If one replaces $\mathbb{C}$ with a field $K$ of characteristic $p$, then the conclusion fails; we provide numerous examples showing the complexity of the problem over a field of positive characteristic. We advance a modified conjecture regarding polynomials $f$ and $g$ which admit two orbits with infinite intersection over a field of characteristic $p$. Then we present various partial results, along with connections with another deep conjecture in the area, the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture.

Abstract:Let $k\ge 2$ be a fixed integer. We consider sums of type $\sum_{n_1\cdots n_k\le x} F(n_1,\ldots,n_k)$, taken over the hyperbolic region $\{(n_1,\ldots,n_k)\in {\Bbb N}^k: n_1\cdots n_k\le x\}$, where $F:{\Bbb N}^k\to {\Bbb C}$ is a given function. In particular, we deduce asymptotic formulas with remainder terms for the hyperbolic summations $\sum_{n_1\cdots n_k\le x} f((n_1,\ldots,n_k))$ and $\sum_{n_1\cdots n_k\le x} f([n_1,\ldots,n_k])$, involving the GCD and LCM of the integers $n_1,\ldots,n_k$, where $f:{\Bbb N}\to {\Bbb C}$ belongs to certain classes of functions. Some of our results generalize those obtained by the authors for $k=2$.

An algebraic combinatorial approach to Sylvester's denumerant

Abstract:For a positive integer sequence $\boldsymbol{a}=(a_1, \dots, a_{N+1})$, Sylvester's denumerant $E(\boldsymbol{a}; t)$ counts the number of nonnegative integer solutions to $\sum_{i=1}^{N+1} a_i x_i = t$ for a nonnegative integer $t$. It has been extensively studied and a well-known result asserts that $E(\boldsymbol{a}; t)$ is a quasi-polynomial in $t$ of degree $N$. A milestone is Baldoni et al.'s polynomial algorithm in 2015 for computing the top $k$ coefficients when $k$ is fixed. Their development uses heavily lattice point counting theory in computational geometry. In this paper, we explain their work in the context of algebraic combinatorics and simplify their computation. Our work is based on constant term method, Barvinok's unimodular cone decomposition, and recent results on fast computation of generalized Todd polynomials. We develop the algorithm \texttt{CT-Knapsack}, together with an implementation in \texttt{Maple}. Our algorithm avoids plenty of repeated computations and is hence faster.

Parametrized systems of generalized polynomial equations: first applications to fewnomials

Abstract:We consider positive solutions to parametrized systems of generalized polynomial equations (with real exponents and positive parameters). By a fundamental result obtained in parallel work, polynomial systems are determined by geometric objects, rather than matrices: a polytope $P$ (arising from the coefficient matrix) and two subspaces representing monomial differences and dependencies (arising from the exponent matrix). The dimension of the latter subspace, the monomial dependency $d$, is crucial. Indeed, we rewrite $\textit{polynomial}$ equations in terms of $d$ $\textit{binomial}$ equations on the coefficient polytope $P$, involving $d$ monomials in the parameters. We further study the solution set on $P$ using methods from analysis such as sign-characteristic functions and Wronskians. In this work, we present first applications to fewnomial systems through five (classes of) examples. In particular, we study (i) $n$ trinomials involving ${n+2}$ monomials in $n$ variables, having dependency $d=1$, and (ii) one trinomial and one $t$-nomial (with $t\ge3$) in two variables, having $d=t-1\ge2$. For (i), we bound the number of positive solutions using the number of roots of a univariate polynomial of degree at most $n$. We also show that this number is always less than or equal to the number of sign changes in an optimal Descartes' rule given in Bihan et al. (2021). For (ii), we improve upper bounds given in Li et al. (2003) and Koiran et al. (2015). Further, for two trinomials ($t=3$), we refine the known upper bound of five in terms of the exponents, and we find an example with five positive solutions that is even simpler than the smallest "Haas system".

Abstract:Let $z\ne \pm1,w^2$ be a fixed integer, and let $f(t)\ne g(t)^2$ be a fixed polynomial over the integers. It is shown that the subset of primes $p\geq 2$ such that $z$ and $f(z)$ is a pair of simultaneous primitive roots modulo $p$ has nonzero density in the set of primes. The same analysis generalizes to \textit{admissible} $k$-tuple of polynomials $z$, $f_1(z)$, $f_2(z), \ldots$, $f_k(z)$, such that $f_i(z)\ne g_i(z)^2$, and $k\ll \log p$ is a small integer.

Abstract:We consider the simultaneously fast and in-place computation of the Euclidean polynomial modular remainder $R(X) $\not\equiv$ A(X) \mod B(X)$ with $A$ and $B$ of respective degrees $n$ and $m $\le$ n$. But fast algorithms for this usually come at the expense of (potentially large) extra temporary space. To remain in-place a further issue is to avoid the storage of the whole quotient $Q(X)$ such that $A=BQ+R$. If the multiplication of two polynomials of degree $k$ can be performed with $M(k)$ operations and $O(k)$ extra space, and if it is allowed to use the input space of $A$ or $B$ for intermediate computations, but putting $A$ and $B$ back to their initial states after the completion of the remainder computation, we here propose an in-place algorithm (that is with its extra required space reduced to $O(1)$ only) using at most $O(n/m M(m)\log(m)$ arithmetic operations, if $\M(m)$ is quasi-linear, or $O(n/m M(m)}$ otherwise. We also propose variants that compute -- still in-place and with the same kind of complexity bounds -- the over-place remainder $A(X) $\not\equiv$ A(X) \mod B(X)$, the accumulated remainder $R(X) += A(X) \mod B(X)$ and the accumulated modular multiplication $R(X) += A(X)C(X) \mod B(X)$. To achieve this, we develop techniques for Toeplitz matrix operations which output is also part of the input. Fast and in-place accumulating versions are obtained for the latter, and thus for convolutions, and then used for polynomial remaindering. This is realized via further reductions to accumulated polynomial multiplication, for which fast in-place algorithms have recently been developed.

On converses to the polynomial method

Abstract:A surprising 'converse to the polynomial method' of Aaronson et al. (CCC'16) shows that any bounded quadratic polynomial can be computed exactly in expectation by a 1-query algorithm up to a universal multiplicative factor related to the famous Grothendieck constant. A natural question posed there asks if bounded quartic polynomials can be approximated by $2$-query quantum algorithms. Arunachalam, Palazuelos and the first author showed that there is no direct analogue of the result of Aaronson et al. in this case. We improve on this result in the following ways: First, we point out and fix a small error in the construction that has to do with a translation from cubic to quartic polynomials. Second, we give a completely explicit example based on techniques from additive combinatorics. Third, we show that the result still holds when we allow for a small additive error. For this, we apply an SDP characterization of Gribling and Laurent (QIP'19) for the completely-bounded approximate degree.

Abstract:In this short note, we closely follow the approach of Green and Tao to extend the best known bound for recurrence modulo 1 from squares to the largest possible class of polynomials. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of a consequence of this result for polynomials structures in sumsets and limitations of the method.

For a pair of polynomials $f$ and $g$ their resultant $R(f,g)$ is a function of their coefficients. Zeros of resultant $R(f,g)$ correspond to the families of coefficients of $f$ and $g$ such that $f$ and $g$ have a common root. Herewith the calculation of this common root is a separate problem.
