Abstract:We explore the role of molecular vibrations in the chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect in the context of charge transport through a molecular nanojunction. We employ a mixed quantum-classical approach that combines Ehrenfest dynamics for molecular vibrations with the hierarchical equations of motion method for the electronic degrees of freedom. This approach treats the molecular vibrations in a nonequilibrium manner, which is crucial for the dynamics of molecular nanojunctions. To explore the effect of vibrational dynamics on spin selectivity, we also introduce a new figure of merit, the displacement polarization, which quantifies the difference in vibrational displacements for opposing lead magnetizations. We analyze the dynamics of single trajectories, investigating how the spin selectivity depends on voltage and electronic-vibrational coupling. Furthermore, we investigate the dynamics and temperature dependence of ensemble-averaged observables. We demonstrate that spin selectivity is correlated in time with the vibrational polarization, indicating that dynamics of the molecular vibrations is the driving force of CISS in this model within the Ehrenfest approach.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### The Problem the Paper Attempts to Solve This paper aims to explore the mechanism of spin selectivity induced by molecular vibrations in chiral molecular junctions (CISS effect). Specifically, the focus is on how non-equilibrium vibrational dynamics affect spin selectivity. #### Summary of Main Content 1. **Research Background**: - Chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS effect) refers to the spin polarization of electrons transmitted through a chiral medium depending on the chirality of the medium. - Although the CISS effect has been observed experimentally, its exact mechanism remains unclear. - Early studies suggest that spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is one of the key factors, but the SOC values in carbon-based molecules are much lower than those required for the experimentally observed spin selectivity. 2. **Research Methods**: - A mixed quantum-classical approach was adopted, combining Ehrenfest dynamics to handle molecular vibrations and the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) method to handle electronic degrees of freedom. - A new measure called displacement polarization was introduced to quantify the differences in molecular vibrational displacement under different lead magnetization directions. 3. **Main Findings**: - By analyzing the dynamical behavior of single trajectories and ensemble averages, it was found that spin selectivity is closely related to the non-equilibrium dynamics of molecular vibrations. - Under high bias conditions, molecular vibrations deviate significantly from thermal equilibrium, thereby significantly affecting spin selectivity in the electron transport process. 4. **Experimental Results**: - The effects of different voltages, system sizes, and electron-vibration coupling on spin selectivity were studied. - The results show that over long time scales, the oscillations in the electronic spectrum caused by molecular vibrations lead to periodic changes in spin selectivity, and these changes coincide with the peaks in displacement polarization. Through these studies, the paper reveals the important role of non-equilibrium vibrational dynamics in the phenomenon of spin selectivity in chiral molecular junctions, providing a new perspective for further understanding the CISS effect.
