Abstract:Colloidal matter undergoing Brownian motion serves as a model system to study various physical phenomena. Understanding the effect of external perturbation on the assembly and dynamics of Brownian colloids has emerged as a relevant research issue in soft matter and biological physics. Optical perturbation in the form of photonic forces and torques has added impetus to this exploration. In recent years, optothermal effects arising due to optical excitation of mesoscale matter have expanded the toolbox of light-colloidal matter interactions. In this perspective, we present an experimental viewpoint on some of the developments related to the assembly and dynamics of Brownian colloids driven by the optothermal field. Furthermore, we discuss some interesting prospects on driven colloidal matter that can have implications on soft matter physics and soft photonics.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to explore the influence of photothermal fields on the assembly and dynamics of Brownian colloids. Specifically, the author analyzes the changes in the assembly and dynamic behaviors of Brownian colloids under the action of photothermal fields from an experimental perspective. The research mainly focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Generation and Application of Photothermal Fields**: The paper discusses how to generate photothermal fields by using the light - absorption effect and explores the applications of these photothermal fields in colloid assembly and transport. For example, colloid assembly and transport are achieved by directly irradiating light - absorbing colloids or by using the temperature gradients generated by the optical heating of certain materials (such as metals). 2. **Structured Light as a Toolbox**: It is introduced in the paper how to generate structured light by using techniques such as spatial light modulators, and how these structured lights are used to create reconfigurable optical potential wells, so as to study the behaviors of colloids in these potential wells. 3. **Dynamics and Assembly of Photothermal Colloids**: - **Evolutionary Assembly of Light - Absorbing Colloids**: The spatiotemporal evolution of light - absorbing colloids in structured - light potential wells is studied, especially the special behaviors of these colloids in photothermal fields, such as the interaction between short - range repulsion and long - range optical gradient forces. - **Dynamics of Active - Passive Colloid Mixtures**: The new degrees of freedom emerging in optical traps when active colloids are mixed with passive colloids are explored, especially the emergence of directional rotation and its control methods. - **Behaviors of Plasmonic Colloids in Gold - Nanoparticle - Driven Photothermal Traps**: How the photothermal fields generated by individual gold nanoparticles affect the capture and movement of gold nanoparticles in fluids and the detection of surface - enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signals is studied. - **Assembly and Crystallization of Colloids Assisted by Plasmonic Nanowires**: The colloid assembly behaviors of silver nanowires under different polarized light excitations are studied, especially the colloid crystallization process under photothermal gradients. - **Expansion of Colloid Assembly by Gold Microplates**: By using the large - area photothermal fields generated by gold microplates, the assembly behaviors of colloids in these fields are studied, especially the rapid accumulation of colloids on microplates and large - area hexagonal arrangements. 4. **Future Prospects**: Finally, the paper looks forward to the potential applications of photothermal fields in the fields of soft matter physics and soft photonics, including the manipulation of active Brownian colloids, the role of photothermal fields in colloid dynamics, etc. In conclusion, this paper aims to experimentally study the influence of photothermal fields on the behaviors of Brownian colloids, reveal the physical mechanisms therein, and explore their potential in scientific research and technological applications.
