Abstract:The volume spectrum of a compact Riemannian manifold is a sequence of critical values for the area functional, defined in analogy with the Laplace spectrum by Gromov. In this paper we prove that the canonical metric on the two-dimensional projective plane is determined modulo isometries by its volume spectrum. We also prove that the surface Zoll metrics on the three-dimensional sphere are characterized by the equality of the spherical area widths. These widths generalize to the surface case the Lusternik-Schnirelmann lengths of closed geodesics. We prove a new sharp area systolic inequality for metrics on the three-dimensional projective space.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on the relationship between the volume spectrum of Riemann manifolds and their geometric properties. Specifically, the authors explore the following key issues:
1. **Can the volume spectrum uniquely determine the geometric structure of certain specific manifolds?**
- The authors prove that on the two - dimensional projective plane \(\mathbb{RP}^2\), if the volume spectrum of a compact Riemann manifold \((M^{n + 1}, g)\) is the same as that of \(\mathbb{RP}^2\), then this manifold must be an isometric manifold of \(\mathbb{RP}^2\). This shows that the volume spectrum of \(\mathbb{RP}^2\) can uniquely determine its geometric structure.
- Expressed by the formula:
\[
\text{If } \omega_k(M, g)=\omega_k(\mathbb{RP}^2, g) \text{ for all } k \geq 1, \text{ then } (M, g) \text{ is isometric to } (\mathbb{RP}^2, g).
\]
2. **Characteristics of Zoll metrics**:
- The authors also study the surface Zoll metrics on the three - dimensional sphere \(S^3\). They prove that if a smooth Riemann metric \(g\) satisfies that the spherical area widths \(\sigma_1, \sigma_2, \sigma_3, \sigma_4\) of \(S^3\) are equal, then \(g\) must be a surface Zoll metric.
- Expressed by the formula:
\[
\sigma_1(S^3, g)=\sigma_2(S^3, g)=\sigma_3(S^3, g)=\sigma_2(S^3, g) \text{ if and only if } g \text{ is a surface Zoll metric.}
\]
3. **Area - homology inequality on the three - dimensional projective space**:
- The authors also prove an optimal area - homology inequality about the three - dimensional projective space \(\mathbb{RP}^3\). Specifically, for any smooth Riemann metric \(g\), they prove that:
\[
\text{sys}^2(\mathbb{RP}^3, g)\leq\frac{\pi}{2}\sigma_2(\mathbb{RP}^3, g),
\]
where the equality holds if and only if \(g\) has a constant sectional curvature.
Through the research of these problems, the authors reveal the important role of the volume spectrum in determining the geometric structure of Riemann manifolds and provide some new rigidity theorems and inequalities. These results not only deepen our understanding of Riemann manifolds but also provide a theoretical basis for further research.
