Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to describe a new $3$-dimensional family of bodies of constant width that we have called peabodies, obtained from the Reuleaux tetrahedron by replacing a small neighborhood of all six edges with sections of an envelope of spheres. This family contains, in particular, the two Meissner solids and a body with tetrahedral symmetry that we have called Robert's body. Behind the construction of this family lies the classical notion of confocal quadrics discussed, for example, by Hilbert in his famous book. We study confocal quadrics and prove that the distances of an alternating sequence of four points in two confocal quadrics always satisfies a simple equation and use this equation to prove that our bodies have constant width.

Abstract:In the recent paper "On a formula for sets of constant width in 2D, Comm. Pure Appl. Anal. 18 (2019), 2117–2131", we gave a constructive formula for all 2d sets of constant width. Based on this result we derive here a formula for the parametrization of the boundary of bodies of constant width in 3 dimensions, with the formula depending on one function defined on . Each such function gives a minimal value and for all one finds a body of constant width 2 r . Moreover, we show that all bodies of constant width in 3d have such a parametrization. The last result needs a tool that we describe as 'shadow domain' and which is explained in an appendix. The construction is explicit and offers a parametrization different from the one given by T. Bayen, T. Lachand-Robert and É. Oudet in "Analytic parametrization of three-dimensional bodies of constant width. Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 186 (2007), 225–249".

Abstract:The conic sections, as well as the solids obtained by revolving these curves, and many of their surprising properties, were already studied by Greek mathematicians since at least the fourth century B.C. Some of these properties come to the light, or are rediscovered, from time to time. In this paper we characterize the conic sections as the plane curves whose tangent lines cut off from a certain similar curve segments of constant area. We also characterize some quadrics as the surfaces whose tangent planes cut off from a certain similar surface compact sets of constant volume. Our work is developed in the most general multidimensional case.

Abstract:We consider convex spacelike polyhedra oriented in Minkowski space. These are the classical analogues of spinfoam intertwiners. We point out a parametrization of these shapes using null face normals, with no constraints or redundancies. Our construction is dimension-independent. In 3+1d, it provides the spacetime picture behind a well-known property of the loop quantum gravity intertwiner space in spinor form, namely that the closure constraint is always satisfied after some SL(2,C) rotation. As a simple application of our variables, we incorporate them in a 4-simplex action that reproduces the large-spin behavior of the Barrett-Crane vertex amplitude.

Abstract:Real, complex, and tropical algebraic geometry join forces in a new branch of mathematical physics called positive geometry. We develop the positive geometry of del Pezzo surfaces and their moduli spaces, viewed as very affine varieties. Their connected components are derived from polyhedral spaces with Weyl group symmetries. We study their canonical forms and scattering amplitudes, and we solve the likelihood equations.

New coordinates for the Four-Body problem

Abstract:A new coordinate system is defined for the Four-Body dynamical problem with general masses, having as its origin of coordinates the center of mass. The transformation from the inertial coordinate system involves a combination of a rotation to the principal axis of inertia, followed by three changes of scale leading the principal moments of inertia to yield a body with three equal moments of inertia, and finally a second rotation that leaves unaltered the equal moments of inertia. These three transformations yield a mass-dependent rigid orthogonal tetrahedron of constant volume in the inertial coordinates. Each of those three linear transformations is a function of three coordinates that produce the nine degrees of freedom of the Four-Body problem, in a coordinate system with the center of mass as origin. The relation between the well known equilateral tetrahedron solution of the gravitational Four-Body problem and the new coordinates is exhibited, and the plane case of central configurations with four different masses is computed numerically in these coordinates.

Abstract:For every hyperplane H supporting a convex body C in the hyperbolic space we define the width of C determined by H as the distance between H and a most distant ultraparallel hyperplane supporting C . We define bodies of constant width in in the standard way as bodies whose all widths are equal. We show that every body of constant width is strictly convex. The minimum width of C over all supporting H is called the thickness of C . A convex body is said to be reduced if for every convex body Z properly contained in R . We show that regular tetrahedra in are not reduced. Similarly as in the Euclidean and spherical spaces, we introduce complete bodies and bodies of constant diameter also in . We show that every body of constant width is a body of constant diameter and a complete body of diameter . Moreover, the two last conditions are equivalent.

Abstract:The configuration space of tricycles (triples of disks in contact) is shown to coincide with the complex plane resulting as a projective space costructed from the tangency and Pauli spinors. Remarkably, the fractal of the depth functions assumes a particularly simple and elegant form. Moreover, the factor space due to a certain symmetry group provides a parametrization of the Apollonian disk packings.

Abstract:The notion of synthetic dimensions has expanded the realm of topological physics to four dimensional (4D) space lately. In this work, non-Hermiticity is used as a synthetic parameter in PT-symmetric photonic crystals to study the topological physics in 4D non-Hermitian synthetic parameter space. We realize a 3D exceptional hypersurface (EHS) in such 4D parameter space, and the degeneracy points emerge due to the symmetry of synthetic parameters. We further demonstrate the existence of exceptional degenerate points (EDPs) on the EHS that originates from the chirality of exceptional points (EPs), and the exceptional surface near EDPs behaves like a Dirac cone. We further show that a very narrow reflection plateau can be found near these EDPs, and their sensitivity towards the PT-symmetry breaking environmental perturbation can make these degeneracy points useful in optical sensing and many other nonlinear and quantum optical applications.

Abstract:It is well-known that Vrancken–Li–Simon classified locally strongly convex affine hyperspheres in Rn+1 whose affine metric are of constant sectional curvatures, but on the other side it is still a difficult problem to classify n-dimensional locally strongly convex affine hyperspheres whose affine metrics are Einstein. In this paper, we have solved the problem in case n=4.

Abstract:Gray-Vanhecke conjectured that the volumes of small geodesic balls could determine if the manifold is a space form, and provided a proof for the compact 4-dimensional manifold, and some cases. In this paper, similar results for the 4-dimensional case are obtained, based upon tensor calculus and classical theorems rather than the topological characterizations in [6].

Abstract:In this paper, through making careful analysis of Gauss and Codazzi equations, we prove that four dimensional biharmonic hypersurfaces in nonzero space form have constant mean curvature. Our result gives the positive answer to the conjecture proposed by Balmus-Montaldo-Oniciuc in 2008 for four dimensional hypersurfaces.

Abstract:The stability, robustness, accuracy, and efficiency of space-time finite element methods crucially depend on the choice of approximation spaces for test and trial functions. This is especially true for high-order, mixed finite element methods which often must satisfy an inf-sup condition in order to ensure stability. With this in mind, the primary objective of this paper and a companion paper is to provide a wide range of explicitly stated, conforming, finite element spaces in four-dimensions. In this paper, we construct explicit high-order conforming finite elements on 4-cubes (tesseracts); our construction uses tools from the recently developed `Finite Element Exterior Calculus'. With a focus on practical implementation, we provide details including Piola-type transformations, and explicit expressions for the volumetric, facet, face, edge, and vertex degrees of freedom. In addition, we establish important theoretical properties, such as the exactness of the finite element sequences, and the unisolvence of the degrees of freedom.

Abstract:We study and compare the webs $\boldsymbol{\mathcal W}_{{\rm dP}_d}$ defined by the conic fibrations on a given smooth del Pezzo surface ${\rm dP}_d$ of degree $d$ for $d=4$ and $d=5$. In a previous paper, we proved that for any positive $d\leq 6$, the web by conics $\boldsymbol{\mathcal W}_{{\rm dP}_d}$ carries a particular abelian relation ${\bf HLog}_d$, whose components all are weight $7-d$ antisymmetric hyperlogarithms. The web $\boldsymbol{\mathcal W}_{{\rm dP}_5}$ is a geometric model of the exceptional Bol's web and the relation ${\bf HLog}_5$ corresponds to the famous `Abel's identity' $(\boldsymbol{{\mathcal A}b})$ of the dilogarithm. Bol's web together with $(\boldsymbol{{\mathcal A}b})$ enjoy several remarkable properties of different kinds. We show that almost all of them admit natural generalizations to the pair $\big( \boldsymbol{\mathcal W}_{{\rm dP}_4}, {\bf HLog}_4\big)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we present explicit expressions for conforming finite element function spaces, basis functions, and degrees of freedom on the pentatope and tetrahedral prism elements. More generally, our objective is to construct finite element function spaces that maintain conformity with infinite-dimensional spaces of a carefully chosen de Rham complex. This paper is a natural extension of the companion paper entitled "Conforming Finite Element Function Spaces in Four Dimensions, Part I: Foundational Principles and the Tesseract" by Nigam and Williams, (2023). In contrast to Part I, in this paper we focus on two of the most popular elements which do not possess a full tensor-product structure in all four coordinate directions. We note that these elements appear frequently in existing space-time finite element methods. In order to build our finite element spaces, we utilize powerful techniques from the recently developed 'Finite Element Exterior Calculus'. Subsequently, we translate our results into the well-known language of linear algebra (vectors and matrices) in order to facilitate implementation by scientists and engineers.

Abstract:We investigate a natural analog to Lutwak's $p$-affine surface area in $d$-dimensional spherical, hyperbolic and de Sitter space. In particular, we show that these curvature measures appear naturally as the volume derivative of floating bodies of non-Euclidean convex bodies conjugated by duality, such as spherical, hyperbolic and de Sitter convex bodies. We provide a unifying framework by establishing a real-analytic version of this relation controlled by the constant curvature of the $d$-dimensional real space form. These new curvature measures relate in two distinctly different ways to curvature measures on Euclidean space, one of which is Lutwak's centro-affine invariant $p$-affine surface area, and the other is related to a rigid-motion invariant curvature measure that appears naturally as the volume derivative of Schneider's mean-width separation body.
