Abstract:We generalize a theorem of Bismut–Zhang, which extends the Cheeger–Müller theorem on Ray–Singer torsion and Reidemeister torsion, to the case of infinite Galois covering spaces. Our result is stated in the framework of extended cohomology, and generalizes in this case a recent result of Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai. It does not use the determinant class condition and thus also (potentially) generalizes several results on L2-torsions due to Burghelea, Friedlander, Kappeler and McDonald. We combine the framework developed by Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai on the determinant of extended cohomology with the heat kernel method developed in the original paper of Bismut–Zhang to prove our result.

Abstract:We study the asymptotics of Ohsawa-Takegoshi extension operator and orthogonal Bergman projector associated with high tensor powers of a positive line bundle. More precisely, for a fixed complex submanifold in a complex manifold, we consider the operator which associates to a given holomorphic section of a positive line bundle over the submanifold the holomorphic extension of it to the ambient manifold with the minimal $L^2$-norm. When the tensor power of the line bundle tends to infinity, we obtain an explicit asymptotic expansion of this operator. This is done by proving an exponential estimate for the associated Schwartz kernel and showing that this Schwartz kernel admits a full asymptotic expansion. We prove similar results for the projection onto holomorphic sections orthogonal to those which vanish along the submanifold.

Abstract:We prove an index theorem concerning the pushforward of flat B-vector bundles, where B is an appropriate algebra. We construct the associated analytic torsion form T. If Z is a smooth closed aspherical manifold, we show that T gives invariants of the homotopy groups of Diff(Z).

Abstract:Let $C$ be a complete algebraically closed extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and let $\mathfrak{X}$ be a smooth formal scheme over $\mathcal{O}_C$. By the work of Bhatt--Morrow--Scholze, it is known that when $\mathfrak{X}$ is proper, the length of the torsion in the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of the generic fiber $\mathfrak{X}_C$ is bounded above by the length of the torsion in the crystalline cohomology of its special fiber. In this note, we focus on the non-proper case and observe that when $\mathfrak{X}$ is affine, the torsion in the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of $\mathfrak{X}_C$ can even be expressed as a functor of the special fiber, unlike in the proper case. As a consequence, we show that, surprisingly, if $\mathfrak{X}$ is affine, the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology groups of $\mathfrak{X}_C$ have finite torsion subgroups. We discuss further applications and propose conjectures predicting the torsion in the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of a broader class of rigid-analytic varieties over $C$.

Abstract:We prove the smoothness of the L^2-analytic torsion form on some fiber bundles with non-compact fibers of positive Novikov-Shubin invariant. We do so by generalizing the arguments of Azzali-Goette-Schick to an appropriate Sobolev space, and proving that the Novikov-Shubin invariant remains positive in the Sobolev settings, using an argument of Alvarez Lopez-Kordyukov.

Abstract:On an odd-dimensional oriented hyperbolic manifold of finite volume with strongly acyclic coefficient systems, we derive a formula relating analytic torsion with the Reidemeister torsion of the Borel-Serre compactification of the manifold. In a companion paper, this formula is used to derive exponential growth of torsion in cohomology of arithmetic groups.

Mod $p$ and torsion homology growth in nonpositive curvature

Abstract:We compute the mod $p$ homology growth of residual sequences of finite index normal subgroups of right-angled Artin groups. We find examples where this differs from the rational homology growth, which implies the homology of subgroups in the sequence has lots of torsion. More precisely, the homology torsion grows exponentially in the index of the subgroup. For odd primes $p$, we construct closed locally CAT(0) manifolds with nonzero mod $p$ homology growth outside the middle dimension. These examples show that Singer's conjecture on rational homology growth and Lück's conjecture on torsion homology growth are incompatible with each other, so at least one of them must be wrong.

On full asymptotics of analytic torsions for compact locally symmetric orbifolds

Abstract:We consider a certain sequence of flat vector bundles on a compact locally symmetric orbifold, and we evaluate explicitly the associated asymptotic Ray-Singer real analytic torsion. The basic idea is to computing the heat trace via Selberg's trace formula, so that a key point in this paper is to evaluate the orbital integrals associated with nontrivial elliptic elements. For that purpose, we deduce a geometric localization formula, so that we can rewrite an elliptic orbital integral as a sum of certain identity orbital integrals associated with the centralizer of that elliptic element. The explicit geometric formula of Bismut for semisimple orbital integrals plays an essential role in these computations.

Torsion in cohomology and dimensional reduction

Abstract:Conventional wisdom dictates that $\mathbb{Z}_N$ factors in the integral cohomology group $H^p(X_n, \mathbb{Z})$ of a compact manifold $X_n$ cannot be computed via smooth $p$-forms. We revisit this lore in light of the dimensional reduction of string theory on $X_n$, endowed with a $G$-structure metric that leads to a supersymmetric EFT. If massive $p$-form eigenmodes of the Laplacian enter the EFT, then torsion cycles coupling to them will have a non-trivial smeared delta form, that is an EFT long-wavelength description of $p$-form currents of the $(n-p)$-cycles of $X_n$. We conjecture that, whenever torsion cycles are calibrated, their linking number can be computed via their smeared delta forms. From the EFT viewpoint, a torsion factor in cohomology corresponds to a $\mathbb{Z}_N$ gauge symmetry realised by a Stückelberg-like action, and calibrated torsion cycles to BPS objects that source the massive fields involved in it.

Abstract:Inspired by classical results by Benoist, we introduce and study natural objects associated to an integrable tangent vector to the character variety $\mathfrak X(\Gamma,\mathsf G)$ of a semi-group $\Gamma$, with values on a semi-simple real algebraic group $\mathsf G$ of the non-compact type. We obtain non-empty interior of the cone of Jordan variations and, when $\mathsf G$ is split, we obtain double-density results associated to these variations, giving in particular non-empty interior of the set of length-normalized variations. We then apply the developed techniques to study pressure forms on the space of Anosov representations, in particular to higher-rank Teichmüller spaces. Among other things we exhibit an explicit functional $\varphi\in\mathfrak a^*$ whose pressure form is compatible with Goldman's symplectic form at the Fuchsian points of the Hitchin component. We finally exhibit a Diophantine equation that governs the degeneration of the Hausdorff dimension of higher-quasi-circles.

Abstract:The goal of this survey is to describe some recent results concerning the L 2 extension of holomorphic sections or cohomology classes with values in vector bundles satisfying weak semi-positivity properties. The results presented here are generalized versions of the Ohsawa-Takegoshi extension theorem, and borrow many techniques from the long series of papers by T. Ohsawa. The recent achievement that we want to point out is that the surjectivity property holds true for restriction morphisms to non necessarily reduced subvarieties, provided these are defined as zero varieties of multiplier ideal sheaves. The new idea involved to approach the existence problem is to make use of L 2 approximation in the Bochner-Kodaira technique. The extension results hold under curvature conditions that look pretty optimal. However, a major unsolved problem is to obtain natural (and hopefully best possible) L 2 estimates for the extension in the case of non reduced subvarieties -- the case when Y has singularities or several irreducible components is also a substantial issue.

Abstract:Given a number field $F$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{F}$, one can associate to any torsion free subgroup of $\operatorname{SL}(2,\mathcal{O}_{F})$ of finite index a complete Riemannian manifold of finite volume with fibered cusp ends. For natural choices of flat vector bundles on such a manifold, we show that analytic torsion is identified with the Reidemeister torsion of the Borel-Serre compactification. This is used to obtain exponential growth of torsion in the cohomology for sequences of congruence subgroups.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a simpler proof of the Krötz--Stanton Extension Theorem for holomorphic extensions of orbit maps in unitary irreducible representations of connected semisimple Lie groups. Our result is a generalization of the previous result as it applies to Hilbert globalizations of finitely generated admissible $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-modules for arbitrary connected semisimple Lie groups $G$ with not necessarily finite center. Furthermore, we give polynomial growth estimates for the norms of the holomorphic extensions of the orbit maps of $K$-finite vectors in irreducible unitary representations. We use this to prove that, at the boundary of the principal crown bundle, these holomorphic extensions have boundary values in the space of distribution vectors.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the analytic torsion of a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold associated with the m-th symmetric power of the standard representation of SL(2,C) and we study its asymptotic behavior if m tends to infinity. The leading coefficient of the asymptotic formula is given by the volume of the hyperbolic 3-manifold. It follows that the Reidemeister torsion associated with the symmetric powers determines the volume of a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold.

Abstract:We prove that the space of holomorphic $p$-forms on the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ of stable curves of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points vanishes for $p=14, 16, 18$ unconditionally and also for $p=20$ under a natural assumption in the case $g=3$. This result is consistent with the Langlands program and it is obtained by applying the Arbarello-Cornalba inductive approach to the cohomology of moduli spaces.

Torsion Vanishing for Some Shimura Varieties

Abstract:We generalize the torsion vanishing results of Caraiani-Scholze and Koshikawa. Our results apply to the cohomology of general Shimura varieties $(\mathbf{G},X)$ of PEL type $A$ or $C$, localized at a suitable maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ in the spherical Hecke algebra at primes $p$ such that $\mathbf{G}_{\mathbb{Q}_{p}}$ is a group for which we know the Fargues-Scholze local Langlands correspondence is the semi-simplification of a suitably nice local Langlands correspondence. This is accomplished by combining Koshikawa's technique, the theory of geometric Eisenstein series over the Fargues-Fontaine curve, the work of Santos describing the structure of the fibers of the minimally and toroidally compactified Hodge-Tate period morphism for general PEL type Shimura varieties of type $A$ or $C$, and ideas developed by Zhang on comparing Hecke correspondences on the moduli stack of $G$-bundles with the cohomology of Shimura varieties. In the process, we also establish a description of the generic part of the cohomology that bears resemblance to the work of Xiao-Zhu. Moreover, we also construct a filtration on the compactly supported cohomology that differs from Manotovan's filtration in the case that the Shimura variety is non-compact, allowing us to circumvent some of the circumlocutions taken by Cariani-Scholze. Our method showcases a very general strategy for proving such torsion vanishing results, and should bear even more fruit once the inputs are generalized. Motivated by this, we formulate an even more general torsion vanishing conjecture.

Abstract:We study the boundary behavior of the invariant of $K3^{[2]}$-type manifolds with antisymplectic involution, which we obtained using equivariant analytic torsion. We show the algebraicity of the singularity of the invariant by using the asymptotic of equivariant Quillen metrics and equivariant $L^2$-metrics. We prove that, in some cases, the invariant coincides with Yoshikawa's invariant for 2-elementary K3 surfaces. Hence, in these cases, our invariant is expressed as the Petersson norm of a Borcherds product and a Siegel modular form.

Generalized Morse Functions, Excision and Higher Torsions

Abstract:Comparing invariants from both topological and geometric perspectives is a key focus in index theorem. This paper compares higher analytic and topological torsions and establishes a version of the higher Cheeger-Müller/Bismut-Zhang theorem. In fact, Bismut-Goette achieved this comparison assuming the existence of fiberwise Morse functions satisfying the fiberwise Thom-Smale transversality condition (TS condition). To fully generalize the theorem, we should remove this assumption. Notably, unlike fiberwise Morse functions, fiberwise generalized Morse functions (GMFs) always exist, we extend Bismut-Goette's setup by considering a fibration $ M \to S $ with a unitarily flat complex bundle $ F \to M $ and a fiberwise GMF $ f $, while retaining the TS condition. Compared to Bismut-Goette's work, handling birth-death points for a generalized Morse function poses a key difficulty. To address this, first, by the work of the author M.P., joint with Zhang and Zhu, we focus on a relative version of the theorem. Here, analytic and topological torsions are normalized by subtracting their corresponding torsions for trivial bundles. Next, using new techniques from by the author J.Y., we excise a small neighborhood around the locus where $f$ has birth-death points. This reduces the problem to Bismut-Goette's settings (or its version with boundaries) via a Witten-type deformation. However, new difficulties arise from very singular critical points during this <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://deformation.To" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> address these, we extend methods from Bismut-Lebeau, using Agmon estimates for noncompact manifolds developed by Dai and J.Y.
