Abstract:We propose that moments of time arise through the failed emergence of the temporal diffeomorphism as gauge symmetry, and that the passage of time is a continual process of an instantaneous state collapsing toward a gauge-invariant state. Unitarity and directedness of the resulting time evolution are demonstrated for a minisuperspace model of cosmology.

### What problem does this paper attempt to solve?
This paper, "A theory of time based on wavefunction collapse" written by Sung - Sik Lee, aims to solve the problem of the nature of time and its definition within the framework of quantum gravity. Specifically, the author attempts to answer the following key questions:
1. **The nature and flow of time**:
- In classical physics, the Newtonian paradigm regards time as a parameter used to mark historical moments and give them an order. However, this view cannot explain the flow of time.
- In general relativity, time translation is just a gauge transformation, generating a redundant description of spacetime. There is no concept of absolute time, so it cannot explain why events unfold in a specific order.
2. **The problem of time in quantum gravity**:
- In the theory of quantum gravity, the definition of time faces new challenges. In particular, when considering that the state |Ψ⟩ is invariant under time diffeomorphism, the dynamical information is only encoded in the entanglement of physical degrees of freedom.
- There are various ways to define time instants. Even for the same clock variable, there is no preferred measurement basis. This leads to different definitions of different time instants and may even change the concept of spatial locality.
3. **The emergence of time and wavefunction collapse**:
- The paper proposes that time is not fundamental but emerges in the continuous projection process from non - gauge - invariant states to gauge - invariant states through wavefunction collapse.
- Time evolution is regarded as a continuous process in which the initial state continuously collapses into a gauge - invariant state. This process explains the flow and directionality of time.
4. **Gauge symmetry and the asymmetry of time**:
- The author believes that time diffeomorphism as a gauge symmetry is approximate, not fundamental. This means that the physical Hilbert space can contain non - gauge - invariant states.
- This extension allows the representation of time instants, and the wavefunction collapse is achieved through a random walk, thus restoring the asymmetry of time.
5. **Cosmological applications**:
- The paper also explores the applications of these theories in cosmology, especially in the Friedmann - Robertson - Walker (FRW) model, studying the evolution of the universe from the radiation - dominated era to the dark - energy - dominated era.
### Summary
The core problem of this paper is to rethink the role of time in quantum gravity and propose a new theory of time, that is, time emerges in the continuous projection process from non - gauge - invariant states to gauge - invariant states through wavefunction collapse. This approach not only solves the problems of the flow and directionality of time but also provides a new perspective for understanding the evolution of the universe.
