Abstract:A modified form of quantum mechanics which includes a new mechanism for wavefunction collapse is proposed. The collapse provides a solution to the quantum measurement problem. This modified quantum mechanics is shown to arise naturally from a fully discrete physics, where all physical quantities are discrete rather than continuous. We compare the theory to the spontaneous collapse theories of Ghirardi, Rimini, Weber and Pearle, and argue that the new theory lends itself well to a realist interpretation of the wavefunction.

Abstract:The assumption that wave function collapse is induced by correlating interactions of the kind that constitute measurements leads to a stochastic collapse equation that does not require the introduction of any new physical constants and that is consistent with conservation laws. The collapse operator is based on the interaction (potential) energy, with a variable timing parameter related to the rate at which individual interactions generate the correlations. The approximate localization of physical systems follows from the distance-dependent nature of the interaction potentials. The equation is consistent with strict conservation of momentum and orbital angular momentum, and it is also consistent with energy conservation within the accuracy allowed by the limited forms of energy that can be described within nonrelativistic theory. The possibility of extending the proposal to a fully relativistic version is discussed.

Abstract:Non-interferometric experiments have been successfully employed to constrain models of spontaneous wave function collapse, which predict a violation of the quantum superposition principle for large systems. These experiments are grounded on the fact that, according to these models, the dynamics is driven by a noise that, besides collapsing the wave function in space, generates a diffusive motion with characteristic signatures, which, though small, can be tested. The non-interferometric approach might seem applicable only to those models which implement the collapse through a noisy dynamics, not to any model, which collapses the wave function in space. Here we show that this is not the case: under reasonable assumptions, any collapse dynamics (in space) is diffusive. Specifically, we prove that any space-translation invariant dynamics which complies with the no-signaling constraint, if collapsing the wave function in space, must change the average momentum of the system, and/or its spread.

Abstract:The act of measurement on a quantum state is supposed to "collapse" the state into one of several eigenstates of the operator corresponding to the observable being measured. This measurement process is sometimes described as outside standard quantum-mechanical evolution and not calculable from Schrödinger's equation. There are two general approaches to the study of wave-function collapse: one called the "consistent" or "decoherent" histories approach and the other, the "environmental decoherence" approach, which studies the effect of the environment upon the quantum system, to explain wave-function collapse. In the "environmental decoherence" approach, one usually studies a Markovian-approximated Master equation to study the time-evolution of reduced density matrix and obtains the long-term dependence of the off-diagonal elements of this matrix. We do not make a Markovian assumption and study a particularly simple and calculable example. We find, the short-time behavior of a collapsing system, at least the one considered in this paper, is not exponential, which is a new result (the long-term behavior is, of course, still exponential). This allows one to connect the Fermi-golden rule quadratic-in-time behavior of a transition probability to the exponential long-time behavior of a collapsing wave-function.

Abstract:Dynamical wave function collapse models entail the continuous liberation of a specified rate of energy arising from the interaction of a fluctuating scalar field with the matter wave function. We consider the wave function collapse process for the constituents of dark matter in our universe. Beginning from a particular early era of the universe chosen from physical considerations, the rate of the associated energy liberation is integrated to yield the requisite magnitude of dark energy around the era of galaxy formation. Further, the equation of state for the liberated energy approaches w→−1 asymptotically, providing a mechanism to generate the present acceleration of the universe.

Probing Spontaneous Wave-Function Collapse with Entangled Levitating Nanospheres

Abstract:Wave function collapse models are considered as the modified theories of standard quantum mechanics at the macroscopic level. By introducing nonlinear stochastic terms in the Schrödinger equation, these models make predictions, differently from those of standard quantum mechanics, that it is fundamentally impossible to prepare macroscopic systems in macroscopic superpositions. The validity of these models can only be examined by experiments and hence efficient protocols for this kind of experiments are highly needed. Here we provide a protocol that is able to probe the postulated collapse effect by means of the entanglement of the center-of-mass motion of two nanospheres optically trapped in a Fabry-Pérot cavity. We show that the collapse noise results in large reduction of the steady-state entanglement and the entanglement, with and without the collapse effect, shows distinguishable scalings with certain system parameters, which can be used to unambiguously determine the effect of these models.

Abstract:We investigate the phenomenology leading to the non-conservation of energy of the continuous spontaneous localization (CSL) model from the viewpoint of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, and use such framework to assess the equilibration process entailed by the dissipative formulation of the model (dCSL). As a paradigmatic situation currently addressed in frontier experiments aimed at investigating possible collapse theories, we consider a one-dimensional mechanical oscillator in a thermal state. We perform our analysis in the phase space of the oscillator, where the entropy production rate, a non-equilibrium quantity used to characterize irreversibility, can be conveniently analyzed. We show that the CSL model violates Clausius law, as it exhibits a negative entropy production rate, while the dCSL model reaches equilibrium consistently only under certain dynamical conditions, thus allowing us to identify the values -- in the parameter space -- where the latter mechanism can be faithfully used to describe a thermodynamically consistent phenomenon.

Abstract:Does consciousness collapse the quantum wave function? This idea was taken seriously by John von Neumann and Eugene Wigner but is now widely dismissed. We develop the idea by combining a mathematical theory of consciousness (integrated information theory) with an account of quantum collapse dynamics (continuous spontaneous localization). Simple versions of the theory are falsified by the quantum Zeno effect, but more complex versions remain compatible with empirical evidence. In principle, versions of the theory can be tested by experiments with quantum computers. The upshot is not that consciousness-collapse interpretations are clearly correct, but that there is a research program here worth exploring.

A proposal for a new kind of spontaneous collapse model

Abstract:Spontaneous collapse models are modifications of standard quantum mechanics in which a physical mechanism is responsible for the collapse of the wavefunction, thus providing a way to solve the so-called "measurement problem". The two most famous of these models are the Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber (GRW) model and the Continuous Spontaneous Localisation (CSL) models. Here, we propose a new kind of non-relativistic spontaneous collapse model based on the idea of collapse points situated at fixed spacetime coordinates. This model shares properties of both GRW and CSL models, while starting from different assumptions. We show that it can lead to a dynamics quite similar to that of the GRW model while also naturally solving the problem of indistinguishable particles. On the other hand, we can also obtain the same master equation of the CSL models. Then, we show how our proposed model solves the measurement problem in a manner conceptually similar to the GRW model. Finally, we show how the proposed model can also accommodate for Newtonian gravity by treating the collapses as gravitational sources.

Abstract:The possibility that gravity plays a role in the collapse of the quantum wave function has been considered in the literature, and it is of relevance not only because it would provide a solution to the measurement problem in quantum theory, but also because it would give a new and unexpected twist to the search for a unified theory of quantum and gravitational phenomena, possibly overcoming the current impasse. The Di'osi-Penrose model is the most popular incarnation of this idea. It predicts a progressive breakdown of quantum superpositions when the mass of the system increases; as such, it is susceptible to experimental verification. Current experiments set a lower bound \,\AA\, for the free parameter of the model, excluding some versions of it. In this work we search for an upper bound, coming from the request that the collapse is effective enough to guarantee classicality at the macroscopic scale: we find out that not all macroscopic systems collapse effectively. If one relaxes this request, a reasonable (although to some degree arbitrary) bound is found to be: \,\AA. This will serve to better direct future experiments to further test the model.

Abstract:When a quantum particle moves in a curved space, a geometric potential can arise. In spite of a long history of extensive theoretical studies, to experimentally observe the geometric potential remains to be a challenge. What are the physically observable consequences of such a geometric potential? Solving the Schrodinger equation on a truncated conic surface, we uncover a class of quantum scattering states that bear a strong resemblance with the quasi-resonant states associated with atomic collapse about a Coulomb impurity, a remarkable quantum phenomenon in which an infinite number of quasi-resonant states emerge. A characteristic defining feature of such collapse states is the infinite oscillations of the local density of states (LDOS) about the zero energy point separating the scattering from the bound states. The emergence of such states in the curved (Riemannian) space requires neither a relativistic quantum mechanism nor any Coulomb impurity: they have zero angular momentum and their origin is purely geometrical - henceforth the term geometry-induced wavefunction collapse. We establish the collapsing nature of these states through a detailed comparative analysis of the behavior of the LDOS for both the zero and finite angular-momentum states as well as the corresponding classical picture. Potential experimental schemes to realize the geometry-induced collapse states are articulated. Not only has our study uncovered an intrinsic connection between the geometric potential and atomic collapse, it also provides a method to experimentally observe and characterize geometric potentials arising from different subfields of physics. For example, in nanoscience and nanotechnology, curved geometry has become increasingly common. Our finding suggests that wavefunction collapse should be an important factor of consideration in designing and developing nanodevices.

Abstract:In this study, an analysis on the internal wave generation via the gravity collapse mechanism is carried out based on the theoretical formulation and the numerical simulation. With the linear theoretical model, a rectangle shape wave is generated and propagates back and forth in the domain, while a two-dimensional non-hydrostatic numerical model could reproduce all the observed phenomena in the laboratory experiments conducted by Chen et al. (2007), and the related process realistically. The model results further provide more quantitative information in the whole domain, thus allowing an in depth understanding of the corresponding internal solitary wave generation and propagation. It is shown that the initial type of the internal wave is determined by the relative height between the perturbation and the environmental density interface, while the final wave type is related to the relative height of the upper and lower layers of the environmental fluid. The shape of the internal wave generated is consistent with that predicted by the KdV and EKdV theories if its amplitude is small, as the amplitude becomes larger, the performance of the EKdV becomes better after the wave adjusts itself to the ambient stratification and reaches an equilibrium state between the nonlinear and dispersion effects. The evolution of the mechanical energy is also analyzed.

Abstract:Spontaneous collapse models aim to resolve the measurement problem in quantum mechanics by considering wave-function collapse as a physical process. We analyze how these models affect a decaying flavor-oscillating system whose evolution is governed by a phenomenological non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. In turn, we apply two popular collapse models, the Quantum Mechanics with Universal Position Localization and the Continuous Spontaneous Localization models, to a neutral meson system. By using the equivalence between the approaches to the time evolution of decaying systems with a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and a dissipator of the Lindblad form in an enlarged Hilbert space, we show that spontaneous collapse can induce the decay dynamics in both quantum state and master equations. Moreover, we show that the decay property of a flavor-oscillating system is intimately connected to the time (a)symmetry of the noise field underlying the collapse mechanism. This (a)symmetry, in turn, is related to the definition of the stochastic integral and can provide a physical intuition behind the Itō-Stratonovich dilemma in stochastic calculus.

Abstract:We construct and study the simplest universal dissipative Lindblad master equation for many-body systems with the purpose of a new dissipative extension of existing nonrelativistic theories of fundamental spontaneous decoherence and spontaneous wave function collapse in nature. It is universal as it is written in terms of second-quantized mass density $\hat \rho$ and current $\hat J$, thus making it independent of the material structure and its parameters. Assuming linear friction in the current, we find that the dissipative structure is strictly constrained. Following the general structure of our dissipative Lindblad equation, we derive and analyze the dissipative extensions of the two most known spontaneous wave function collapse models, the Diósi-Penrose and the continuous spontaneous localization models.

Abstract:In the context of the measurement problem, we propose to model the interaction between a quantum particle and an "apparatus" through a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian term. We simulate the time evolution of a normalized quantum state split into two spin components (via a Stern-Gerlach experiment) and that undergoes a wave-function collapse driven by a non-Hermitian Hatano-Nelson Hamiltonian. We further analyze how the strength and other parameters of the non-Hermitian perturbation influence the time-to-collapse of the wave function obtained under a Schrödinger-type evolution. We finally discuss a thought experiment where manipulation of the apparatus could challenge standard quantum mechanics predictions.

Abstract:We show that propagating a truncated discontinuous wave function by Schrödinger's equation, as asserted by the collapse axiom, gives rise to non-existence of the average displacement of the particle on the line. It also implies that there is no Zeno effect. On the other hand, if the truncation is done so that the reduced wave function is continuous, the average coordinate is finite and there is a Zeno effect. Therefore the collapse axiom of measurement needs to be revised.

Abstract:Symmetry-preserving (mimetic) discretization aims to preserve certain properties of a continuous differential operator in its discrete counterpart. For these discretizations, stability and (discrete) conservation of mass, momentum and energy are proven in the same way as for the original continuous model. In our papers <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1710.07149" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1710.07149">arXiv:1710.07149</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1901.02264" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1901.02264">arXiv:1901.02264</a>, we presented space discretization schemes for various models, which had exact conservation of mass, momentum and energy. Mass and momentum conservation followed from the left null spaces of the discrete operators used. The conservation of energy in the continuous and discrete models is more complicated, and the papers had little space for their complete derivation. This paper contains the derivation of the energy equations in more detail than was given in the papers <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1710.07149" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1710.07149">arXiv:1710.07149</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1901.02264" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1901.02264">arXiv:1901.02264</a>.
