Abstract:Suppose a residually finite group $G$ acts cocompactly on a contractible complex with strict fundamental domain $Q$, where the stabilizers are either trivial or have normal $\mathbb{Z}$-subgroups. Let $\partial Q$ be the subcomplex of $Q$ with nontrivial stabilizers. Our main result is a computation of the homology torsion growth of a chain of finite index normal subgroups of $G$. We show that independent of the chain, the normalized torsion limits to the torsion of $\partial Q$, shifted a degree. Under milder assumptions of acyclicity of nontrivial stabilizers, we show similar formulas for the mod p-homology growth. We also obtain formulas for the universal and the usual $L^2$-torsion of $G$ in terms of the torsion of stabilizers and topology of $\partial Q$. In particular, we get complete answers for right-angled Artin groups, which shows they satisfy a torsion analogue of the Lück approximation theorem.

On the growth of torsion in the cohomology of some arithmetic groups of $\mathbb{Q}$-rank one

Abstract:Given a number field $F$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{F}$, one can associate to any torsion free subgroup of $\operatorname{SL}(2,\mathcal{O}_{F})$ of finite index a complete Riemannian manifold of finite volume with fibered cusp ends. For natural choices of flat vector bundles on such a manifold, we show that analytic torsion is identified with the Reidemeister torsion of the Borel-Serre compactification. This is used to obtain exponential growth of torsion in the cohomology for sequences of congruence subgroups.

Abstract:We strengthen a result of Bagaria and Magidor (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 366 (2014), no. 4, 1857–1877) about the relationship between large cardinals and torsion classes of abelian groups, and prove that (1)the Maximum Deconstructibility principle introduced in Cox (J. Pure Appl. Algebra 226 (2022), no. 5) requires large cardinals; it sits, implication‐wise, between Vopěnka's Principle and the existence of an ω1 ‐strongly compact cardinal. (2)While deconstructibility of a class of modules always implies the precovering property by Saorín and Šťovíček (Adv. Math. 228 (2011), no. 2, 968–1007), the concepts are (consistently) nonequivalent, even for classes of abelian groups closed under extensions, homomorphic images, and colimits.

Abstract:The torsion conjecture says: for any abelian variety A defined over a number field k , the order of the torsion subgroup of A ( k ) is bounded by a constant C ( k, d ) which depends only on the number field k and the dimension d of the abelian variety. The torsion conjecture remains open in general. However, in this paper, a short argument shows that the conjecture is true for more general fields if we consider linear groups instead of abelian varieties. If G is a connected linear algebraic group defined over a field k which is finitely generated over ℚ, Γ is a torsion subgroup of G ( k ). Then the order of Γ is bounded by a constant C ′( k, d ) which depends only on k and the dimension d of G .
Torsion bounds for a fixed abelian variety and varying number field

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $K$. For a finite extension $L/K$, the cardinality of the group $A(L)_{\operatorname{tors}}$ of torsion points in $A(L)$ can be bounded in terms of the degree $[L:K]$. We study the smallest real number $\beta_A$ such that for any finite extension $L/K$ and $\varepsilon>0$, we have $|A(L)_{\operatorname{tors}}| \leq C \cdot [L:K]^{\beta_A+\varepsilon}$, where the constant $C$ depends only on $A$ and $\varepsilon$ (and not $L$). Assuming the Mumford--Tate conjecture for $A$, we will show that $\beta_A$ agrees with the conjectured value of Hindry and Ratazzi. We also give a similar bound for the maximal order of a torsion point in $A(L)$.

Torsion in $p$-adic étale cohomology: remarks and conjectures

Abstract:Let $C$ be a complete algebraically closed extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and let $\mathfrak{X}$ be a smooth formal scheme over $\mathcal{O}_C$. By the work of Bhatt--Morrow--Scholze, it is known that when $\mathfrak{X}$ is proper, the length of the torsion in the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of the generic fiber $\mathfrak{X}_C$ is bounded above by the length of the torsion in the crystalline cohomology of its special fiber. In this note, we focus on the non-proper case and observe that when $\mathfrak{X}$ is affine, the torsion in the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of $\mathfrak{X}_C$ can even be expressed as a functor of the special fiber, unlike in the proper case. As a consequence, we show that, surprisingly, if $\mathfrak{X}$ is affine, the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology groups of $\mathfrak{X}_C$ have finite torsion subgroups. We discuss further applications and propose conjectures predicting the torsion in the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of a broader class of rigid-analytic varieties over $C$.

Obstructing two-torsion in the rational knot concordance group

Abstract:It is well known that there are many 2-torsion elements in the classical knot concordance group. On the other hand, it is not known if there is any torsion element in the rational knot concordance group $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. Cha defined the algebraic rational concordance group $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}$, an analogue of the classical algebraic concordance group, and showed that $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}\cong\mathbb{Z}^\infty\oplus\mathbb{Z}_2^\infty\oplus\mathbb{Z}_4^\infty$. The knots that represent 2-torsions in $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}$ potentially have order $2$ in $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. In this paper, we provide an obstruction for knots of order $2$ in $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}$ from being of finite order in $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. Moreover, we give a family consisting of such knots that generates an infinite rank subgroup of $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. We also note that Cha proved that in higher dimensions, the algebraic rational concordance order is the same as the rational knot concordance order. Our obstruction is based on the localized von Neumann $\rho$-invariant.

Torsor structure of level-raising operators

Abstract:We consider families of reductive complexes related by level-raising operators and originating from an associative algebra. In the main theorem it is shown that the multiple cohomology of that complexes is given by the factor space of products of reduction operators. In particular, we compute explicit torsor structure of the genus $g$ multiple cohomology of the families of horizontal complexes with spaces of of canonical converging reductive differential forms for a $C_2$-cofinite quasiconformal strong-conformal field theory-type vertex operator algebra associated to a complex curve. That provides an equivalence of multiple cohomology to factor spaces of products of sums of reduction functions with actions of the group of local coordinates automorphisms.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the possible torsion subgroups of twists of abelian varieties with good reduction. As an application, we prove a theorem concerning ramified primes over any quadratic extension where odd-order torsion growth is achieved. In particular, we show that for every rational elliptic curve and every imaginary quadratic field not equal to $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ satisfying the Heegner hypothesis no odd-order torsion growth can occur.

Abstract:The paper studies the $L^2$-torsion of fibrations, focusing on cases that relax acyclicity and the determinant class condition. We prove the sum formula and the product formula for $L^2$-torsion in the extended abelian category. The desired formula for $L^2$-torsion of a simple fibration is obtained under the assumption that the fibers have zero Euler characteristic.

Abstract:Let $T_{\mathrm{CM}}(d)$ denote the maximum size of a torsion subgroup of a CM elliptic curve over a degree $d$ number field. We initiate a systematic study of the asymptotic behavior of $T_{\mathrm{CM}}(d)$ as an "arithmetic function". Whereas a recent result of the last two authors computes the upper order of $T_{\mathrm{CM}}(d)$, here we determine the lower order, the typical order and the average order of $T_{\mathrm{CM}}(d)$ as well as study the number of isomorphism classes of groups $G$ of order $T_{\mathrm{CM}}(d)$ which arise as the torsion subgroup of a CM elliptic curve over a degree $d$ number field. To establish these analytic results we need to extend some prior algebraic results. Especially, if $E_{/F}$ is a CM elliptic curve over a degree $d$ number field, we show that $d$ is divisible by a certain function of $\# E(F)[\mathrm{tors}]$, and we give a complete characterization of all degrees $d$ such that every torsion subgroup of a CM elliptic curve defined over a degree $d$ number field already occurs over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Uniform polynomial bounds on torsion from rational geometric isogeny classes

Abstract:In 1996, Merel showed there exists a function $B\colon \mathbb{Z}^+\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}^+$ such that for any elliptic curve $E/F$ defined over a number field of degree $d$, one has the torsion group bound $\# E(F)[\textrm{tors}]\leq B(d)$. Based on subsequent work, it is conjectured that one can choose $B$ to be polynomial in the degree $d$. In this paper, we show that such bounds exist for torsion from the family $\mathcal{I}_{\mathbb{Q}}$ of elliptic curves which are geometrically isogenous to at least one rational elliptic curve. More precisely, we show that for each $\epsilon>0$ there exists $c_\epsilon>0$ such that for any elliptic curve $E/F\in \mathcal{I}_{\mathbb{Q}}$, one has \[ \# E(F)[\textrm{tors}]\leq c_\epsilon\cdot [F:\mathbb{Q}]^{5+\epsilon}. \] This generalizes prior work of Clark and Pollack, as well as work of the second author in the case of rational geometric isogeny classes.

On torsion in eulerian magnitude homology of Erdos-Renyi random graphs

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the regimes where an Erdos-Renyi random graph has torsion free eulerian magnitude homology groups. To this end, we start be introducing the eulerian Asao-Izumihara complex - a quotient CW-complex whose homology groups are isomorphic to direct summands of the graph eulerian magnitude homology group. We then proceed by producing a vanishing threshold for a shelling of eulerian Asao-Izumihara complex. This will lead to a result establishing the regimes where eulerian magnitude homology of Erdos-Renyi random graphs is torsion free.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a subset of $G$, where $G$ is a finite abelian group of torsion $r$. It was conjectured by Ruzsa that if $|A+A|\leq K|A|$, then $A$ is contained in a coset of $G$ of size at most $r^{CK}|A|$ for some constant $C$. The case $r=2$ received considerable attention in a sequence of papers, and was resolved by Green and Tao. Recently, Even-Zohar and Lovett settled the case when $r$ is a prime. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture when $r$ is a power of prime. In particular, the bound we obtain is tight.

Abstract:We propose a definition for analytic torsion of the Rumin complex on contact manifolds. This is given by the derivative at zero of a well-chosen combination of zeta functions of a fourth-order modified Rumin Laplacian. The regular value at zero (before differentiation) of this well-chosen combination of zeta functions is shown to be a contact invariant. The variation of our analytic torsion is given as the integral of local terms, together with a global term coming from the null-space of the Laplacian.
The mean number of $2$-torsion elements in the class groups of cubic orders

Abstract:We determine the mean number of 2-torsion elements in class groups of cubic orders, when such orders are enumerated by discriminant. Specifically, we prove that when isomorphism classes of totally real (resp., complex) cubic orders are enumerated by discriminant, the average $2$-torsion in the class group is $1 + \frac{1}{4} \times \frac{\zeta(2)}{\zeta(4)}$ (resp., $1 + \frac{1}{2} \times \frac{\zeta(2)}{\zeta(4)}$). In particular, we find that the average $2$-torsion in the class group increases when one ranges over all orders in cubic fields instead of restricting to the subfamily of rings of integers of cubic fields, where the average $2$-torsion in the class group was first determined in work of Bhargava to be $\frac{5}{4}$ (resp., $\frac{3}{2}$). By work of Bhargava--Varma, proving this result amounts to obtaining an asymptotic count of the number of "reducible" $\operatorname{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$-orbits on the space $\mathbb{Z}^2 \otimes_{\mathbb{Z}} \operatorname{Sym}^2 \mathbb{Z}^3$ of $3 \times 3$ symmetric integer matrices having bounded invariants and satisfying local conditions. In this paper, we resolve the generalization of this orbit-counting problem where the dimension $3$ is replaced by any fixed odd integer $N \geq 3$. More precisely, we determine asymptotic formulas for the number of reducible $\operatorname{SL}_N(\mathbb{Z})$-orbits on $\mathbb{Z}^2 \otimes_{\mathbb{Z}} \operatorname{Sym}^2 \mathbb{Z}^N$ satisfying general infinite sets of congruence conditions.
