Abstract:We prove that any over-twist pattern is conjugate to an interval exchange transformation with bounded number of segments of isometry, restricted on one of its cycles. The bound is independent of the period and over-rotation number of the over-twist pattern and depends only on its modality.

Abstract:Rotation numbers for some maps of triods were introduced in [15] . The goal of this paper is to study patterns of triods which don't force other patterns with the same rotation number which we name triod twists . We obtain their complete characterization and show that these patterns can be conjugated to circle rotations by a piecewise monotone map. We also describe the dynamics of unimodal triod twist patterns with a given rational rotation number .

Abstract:Abstract A natural generalization of interval exchange maps are linear involutions, first introduced by Danthony and Nogueira [Measured foliations on non-orientable surfaces. Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 26 (6) (1993), 645–664]. Recurrent train tracks with a single switch provide a subclass of linear involutions. We call such linear involutions non-classical interval exchanges. They are related to measured foliations on orientable flat surfaces. Non-classical interval exchanges can be studied as a dynamical system by considering Rauzy induction in this context. This gives a refinement process on the parameter space similar to Kerckhoff’s simplicial systems. We show that the refinement process gives an expansion that has a key dynamical property called uniform distortion . We use uniform distortion to prove normality of the expansion. Consequently, we prove an analog of Keane’s conjecture: almost every non-classical interval exchange is uniquely ergodic. Uniform distortion has been independently shown in [A. Avila and M. Resende. Abstract:We give conditions for minimality of extensions of a rotation of angle with one marked point, solving the problem for any prime N : for , these correspond to the Veech 1969 examples, for which a necessary and sufficient condition was not known yet. We provide also a word combinatorial criterion of minimality valid for general interval exchange transformations, which applies to extensions of any interval exchange transformation with any number of marked points. Then we give a condition for unique ergodicity of these extensions when the initial interval exchange transformation is linearly recurrent and there are one or two marked points.

Abstract:We prove the positivity of the top Lyapunov exponent of the twisted (spectral) cocycle, associated with IETs, with respect to a family of natural invariant measures. The proof relies on relating the top exponent to limits of exponents along families of affine invariant submanifolds of genus tending to infinity. Applications include an observation about a conjecture of Kontsevich and Zorich, a discrepancy estimate, and a formula for the lower local dimension of spectral measures.

Abstract:We study the group of all interval exchange transformations (IETs). We show that for every IET $S$, there exists a dense open set of admissible IETs that share a relation with $S$. This is an extension of a result published by Dahmani, Fujiwara and Guirardel in 2013: the group generated by a generic pair of elements of IET([0;1[) is not free (assuming a suitable condition on the underlying permutation). Abstract:We establish conditions for the existence of a family of piecewise linear invariant curves in a two-parameter family of piecewise isometries on the upper half-plane known as Translated Cone Exchange Transformations. We show that these curves are embeddings of interval exchange transformations and give rise to layers of invariant regions. We also show the existence of a trapezoidal piecewise isometry for which the dynamics on the top and bottom edges are distinct 2-interval exchange transformations.

Abstract:We study the problem of conjugating a diffeomorphism of the interval to (positive) powers of itself. Although this is always possible for homeomorphisms, the smooth setting is rather interesting. Besides the obvious obstruction given by hyperbolic fixed points, several other aspects need to be considered. As concrete results we show that, in class $C^1$, if we restrict to the (closed) subset of diffeomorphisms having only parabolic fixed points, then the set of diffeomorphisms that are conjugate to their powers is dense, but its complement is generic. In higher regularity, however, the complementary set contains an open and dense set. The text is complemented with several remarks and results concerning distortion elements of the group of diffeomorphisms of the interval in several regularities.

Abstract:Although piecewise isometries (PWIs) are higher-dimensional generalizations of one-dimensional interval exchange transformations (IETs), their generic dynamical properties seem to be quite different. In this paper, we consider embeddings of IET dynamics into PWI with a view to better understanding their similarities and differences. We derive some necessary conditions for existence of such embeddings using combinatorial, topological and measure-theoretic properties of IETs. In particular, we prove that continuous embeddings of minimal 2-IETs into orientation-preserving PWIs are necessarily trivial and that any 3-PWI has at most one non-trivially continuously embedded minimal 3-IET with the same underlying permutation. Finally, we introduce a family of 4-PWIs, with an apparent abundance of invariant non-smooth fractal curves supporting IETs, that limit to a trivial embedding of an IET.

Abstract:In this paper, we study distortion in the group $\mathcal A$ of Affine Interval Exchange Transformations (AIET). We prove that any distorted element $f$ of $\mathcal A$, has an iterate $f^ k$ that is conjugate by an element of $\mathcal A$ to a product of infinite order restricted rotations, with pairwise disjoint supports. As consequences we prove that no Baumslag-Solitar group, $BS(m,n)$ with $\vert m \vert \neq \vert n \vert$, acts faithfully by elements of $\mathcal A$, every finitely generated nilpotent group of $\mathcal A$ is virtually abelian and there is no distortion element in $\mathcal A_{\mathbb Q}$, the subgroup of $\mathcal A$ consisting of rational AIETs.

Abstract:Consider a multimodal interval map $f$ of $C^3$ with non-flat critical points. We establish several characterizations of the map $f$ is quasi-symmetrically conjugated to a piecewise affine map in the case $f$ is topologically exact and all of its periodic points are hyperbolic repelling. In particular, we give a negative answer to a question posted by Henk Bruin in \cite{Bru96}.

Abstract:Hölder's theorem states that any group acting freely by circle homeomorphisms is abelian, this is no longer true for interval exchange transformations: we first give examples of free actions of non abelian groups. Then after noting that finitely generated groups acting freely by IET are virtually abelian, we classify the free actions of groups containing a copy of $\mathbb Z^2$, showing that they are ``conjugate" to actions in some specific subgroups $G_n$, namely $G_n \simeq ({\mathcal G}_2)^n \rtimes\mathcal S_n $ where ${\mathcal G}_2$ is the group of circular rotations seen as exchanges of $2$ intervals and $\mathcal S_n$ is the group of permutations of $\{1,...,n\}$ acting by permuting the copies of ${\mathcal G}_2$. We also study non free actions of virtually abelian groups and we obtain the same conclusion for any such group that contains a conjugate to a product of restricted rotations with disjoint supports and without periodic points. As a consequence, we provide examples of non virtually nilpotent subgroups of IETs. In particular, we show that the group generated by $f\in G_n$ periodic point free and $g\notin G_n$ is not virtually nilpotent. Moreover, we exhibit examples of finitely generated non virtually nilpotent subgroups of IETs, some of them are metabelian and others are not virtually solvable.

Abstract:A flow view is the graph of a measurable conjugacy $\Phi$ between a substitution or S-adic subshift $(\Sigma,\sigma, \mu)$ and an exchange of infinitely many intervals in $([0,1], F, m)$, where $m$ is Lebesgue measure. A natural refining sequence of partitions of $\Sigma$ is transferred to $([0,1],m)$ using a canonical addressing scheme, a fixed dual substitution, and a shift-invariant probability measure $\mu$. On the flow view, $T \in \Sigma$ is shown horizontally at a height of $\Phi(T)$ using colored unit intervals to represent the letters. The infinite interval exchange transformation $F$ is well approximated by exchanges of finitely many intervals, making numeric and graphic methods possible. We prove that in certain cases a choice of dual substitution guarantees that $F$ is self-similar. We discuss why the spectral type of $\Phi \in L^2(\Sigma, \mu),$ is of particular interest. As an example of utility, some spectral results for constant-length substitutions are included.

Abstract:Area and orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of the standard 2-disc, referred to as symplectomorphisms of $\mathbb{D}^{2}$, allow decompositions in terms of positive twist diffeomorphisms. Using the latter decomposition we utilize the Conley index theory of discrete braid classes as introduced in [Ghrist et al., C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris Sér. I Math., 331(11), 2000, Invent. Math., 152(2), 2003] in order to obtain a Morse type forcing theory of periodic points: a priori information about periodic points determines a mapping class which may force additional periodic points.
