Abstract:The functional graph of a function $g:X\rightarrow X$ is the directed graph with vertex set $X$ the edges of which are of the form $x\rightarrow g(x)$ for $x\in X$. Functional graphs are heavily studied because they allow one to understand the behavior of $g$ under iteration (i.e., to understand the discrete dynamical system $(X,g)$), which has various applications, especially when $X$ is a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. This paper is an extensive study of the functional graphs of so-called index $d$ generalized cyclotomic mappings of $\mathbb{F}_q$, which are a natural and manageable generalization of monomial functions. We provide both theoretical results on the structure of their functional graphs and Las Vegas algorithms for solving fundamental problems, such as parametrizing the connected components of the functional graph by representative vertices, or describing the structure of a connected component given by a representative vertex. The complexity of these algorithms is analyzed in detail, and we make the point that for fixed index $d$ and most prime powers $q$ (in the sense of asymptotic density), suitable implementations of these algorithms have an expected runtime that is polynomial in $\log{q}$ on quantum computers, whereas their expected runtime is subexponential in $\log{q}$ on a classical computer. We also discuss four special cases in which one can devise Las Vegas algorithms with this kind of complexity behavior over most finite fields that solve the graph isomorphism problem for functional graphs of generalized cyclotomic mappings.

On the stabilizer of the graph of linear functions over finite fields

Abstract:In this paper we will study the action of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}^{2 \times 2}$ on the graph of an $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear function of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ into itself. In particular we will see that, under certain combinatorial assumptions, its stabilizer (together with the sum and product of matrices) is a field. We will also see some examples for which this does not happen. Moreover, we will establish a connection between such a stabilizer and the right idealizer of the rank-metric code defined by the linear function and give some structural results in the case in which the polynomials are partially scattered.

Abstract:We study and explicitly construct some families of asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields. It turns out that these families have an asymptotical class number widely greater than the general Lachaud - Martin-Deschamps bounds. We emphasize that we obtain asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields over any finite field $\F_q$, in particular when $q$ is not a square and that these sequences are dense towers.

Abstract:Let $U$ be a set of polynomials of degree at most $k$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$, the finite field of $q$ elements. Assume that $U$ is an intersecting family, that is, the graphs of any two of the polynomials in $U$ share a common point. Adriaensen proved that the size of $U$ is at most $q^k$ with equality if and only if $U$ is the set of all polynomials of degree at most $k$ passing through a common point. In this manuscript, using a different, polynomial approach, we prove a stability version of this result, that is, the same conclusion holds if $|U|>q^k-q^{k-1}$. We prove a stronger result when $k=2$. For our purposes, we also prove the following results. If the set of directions determined by the graph of $f$ is contained in an additive subgroup of $\mathbb{F}_q$, then the graph of $f$ is a line. If the set of directions determined by at least $q-\sqrt{q}/2$ affine points is contained in the set of squares/non-squares plus the common point of either the vertical or the horizontal lines, then up to an affinity the point set is contained in the graph of some polynomial of the form $\alpha x^{p^k}$.

Abstract:We give a version of Ax-Katz's $p$-adic congruences and Moreno-Moreno's $p$-weight refinement that holds over any finite commutative ring of prime characteristic. We deduce this from a purely group-theoretic result that gives a lower bound on the $p$-adic divisibility of the number of simultaneous zeros of a system of maps $f_j: A\to B_j$ from a fixed ``source'' finite commutative group $A$ of exponent $p$ to varying ``target'' finite commutative $p$-groups $B_j$. Our proof combines Wilson's proof of Ax-Katz over $\mathbb{F}_p$ with the functional calculus of Aichinger-Moosbauer.

Abstract:This paper provides two characterizations of the primitive roots of unity in quadratic cyclotomic extensions over arbitrary fields. Firstly, we introduce a mapping from $\mathbb{N}$ to $\mathbb{N}$ crucial for describing these roots, closely tied to their order over the field. Secondly, for any prime $p$, we determine the maximal natural number $n$ such that $\zeta_{p^n}$ defines a quadratic cyclotomic extension over the field $F$. This characterization is uniform across different fields, regardless of their characteristic, and applies to both odd and even primes.

Abstract:Let us consider an algebraic function field defined over a finite Galois extension $K$ of a perfect field $k$. We give some conditions allowing the descent of the definition field of the algebraic function field from $K$ to $k$. We apply these results to the descent of the definition field of a tower of function fields.We give explicitly the equations of the intermediate steps of an Artin-Schreier type extension reduced from $\F_{q^2}$ to $\F_q$. By applying these results to a completed Garcia-Stichtenoth's tower we improve the upper bounds and the upper asymptotic bounds of the bilinear complexity of the multiplication in finite fields.

Abstract:Caraiani and Newton have proven that if $F$ is an imaginary quadratic number field such that $X_0(15)$ has rank $0$ over $F$, then every elliptic curve over $F$ is modular. This paper is concerned with the quadratic fields $F=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p})$ for a prime number $p$. We give explicit conditions on $p$ under which the rank is $0$, and prove that these conditions are satisfied for $87,5\%$ of the primes for which the rank is expected to be even based on the parity conjecture. We also show these conditions are satisfied if and only if rank $0$ follows from a $4$-descent over $\mathbb{Q}$ on the quadratic twist $X_0(15)_{-p}$. To prove this, we perform two consecutive $2$-descents and prove this gives rank bounds equivalent to those obtained from a $4$-descent using visualisation techniques for $\mathrm{Sha}[2]$. In fact we prove a more general connection between higher descents for elliptic curves which seems interesting in its own right.

Abstract:In 1953, Carlitz~\cite{Car53} showed that all permutation polynomials over $\F_q$, where $q>2$ is a power of a prime, are generated by the special permutation polynomials $x^{q-2}$ (the inversion) and $ ax+b$ (affine functions, where $0\neq a, b\in \F_q$). Recently, Nikova, Nikov and Rijmen~\cite{NNR19} proposed an algorithm (NNR) to find a decomposition of the inverse function in quadratics, and computationally covered all dimensions $n\leq 16$. Petrides~\cite{P23} found a class of integers for which it is easy to decompose the inverse into quadratics, and improved the NNR algorithm, thereby extending the computation up to $n\leq 32$. Here, we extend Petrides' result, as well as we propose a number theoretical approach, which allows us to cover easily all (surely, odd) exponents up to~$250$, at least.

Abstract:Planar functions, introduced by Dembowski and Ostrom, have attracted much attention in the last decade. As shown in this paper, we present a new class of planar functions of the form $\operatorname{Tr}(ax^{q+1})+\ell(x^2)$ on an extension of the finite field $\mathbb F_{q^n}/\mathbb F_q$. Specifically, we investigate those functions on $\mathbb F_{q^2}/\mathbb F_q$ and construct several typical kinds of planar functions. We also completely characterize them on $\mathbb F_{q^3}/\mathbb F_q$. When the degree of extension is higher, it will be proved that such planar functions do not exist given certain conditions.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth curve over a finitely generated field $k$, and let $\ell$ be a prime different from the characteristic of $k$. We analyze the dynamics of the Galois action on the deformation rings of mod $\ell$ representations of the geometric fundamental group of $X$. Using this analysis, we prove analogues of the Shafarevich and Fontaine-Mazur finiteness conjectures for function fields over algebraically closed fields in arbitrary characteristic, and a weak variant of the Frey-Mazur conjecture for function fields in characteristic zero. For example, we show that if $X$ is a normal, connected variety over $\mathbb{C}$, the (typically infinite) set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_\ell})$, which come from geometry, has no limit points. As a corollary, we deduce that if $L$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_\ell$, then the set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(L)$, which arise from geometry, is finite.

Abstract:Let X be a smooth projective curve over a finite field F with q elements. For m⩾1, let Xm be the curve X over the finite field Fm, the m-th extension of F. Let Kn(m) be the K-group Kn(Xm) of the smooth projective curve Xm. In this paper, we study the structure of the groups Kn(m). If l is a prime, we establish an analogue of Iwasawa theorem in algebraic number theory for the orders of the l-primary part Kn(lm){l} of Kn(lm). In particular, when X is an elliptic curve E defined over F, our method determines the structure of Kn(E). Our results can be applied to construct an efficient DL system in elliptic cryptography.

Abstract:We realize Frobenius conjugacy classes in Galois groups of certain $q$-polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ using specific degree 1 ideals. We combine this with methods from elementary linear algebra and group theory to realize transvections in some linear Galois groups. This enables the Galois group to be identified as a known classical group in several reasonably general cases.

Abstract:It is well known that there is a one-to-one correspondence between supersingular $j$-invariants up to the action of $\text{Gal}(\mathbb{F}_{p^2}/\mathbb{F}_p)$ and type classes of maximal orders in $B_{p,\infty}$ by Deuring's theorem. Interestingly, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between $\mathbb{F}_p$-isomorphism classes of supersingular elliptic curves and primitive reduced binary quadratic forms with discriminant $-p$ or $-16p$. Due to this correspondence and the fact that $\mathbb{F}_p$-isogenies between elliptic curves could be represented by quadratic forms, we show that operations of these isogenies on supersingular elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_p$ are compatible with the composition of quadratic forms. Based on these results, we could reduce the security of CSIDH cryptosystem to computing this correspondence explicitly.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field of order $q$ and $F=\mathbb{F}_q(x)$ the rational function field. In this paper, we give a characterization of the cyclotomic function fields $F(\Lambda_M)$ with modulus $M$, where $M \in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ is a monic and irreducible polynomial of degree two. We also provide the full automorphism group of $F(\Lambda_M)$ in odd characteristic, extending results of \cite{MXY2016} where the automorphism group of $F(\Lambda_M)$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ was computed.
