Abstract:In this paper, we study the stability of the concentration inequality for one-dimensional complex polynomials. We provide the stability of the local concentration inequality and a global version using a Wehrl-type entropy.

Abstract:We prove a sharp quantitative version of recent Faber-Krahn inequalities for the continuous Wavelet transforms associated to a certain family of Cauchy wavelet windows . Our results are uniform on the parameters of the family of Cauchy wavelets, and asymptotically sharp in both directions. As a corollary of our results, we are able to recover not only the original result for the short-time Fourier transform as a limiting procedure, but also a new concentration result for functions in Hardy spaces. This is a completely novel result about optimal concentration of Poisson extensions, and our proof automatically comes with a sharp stability version of that inequality. Our techniques highlight the intertwining of geometric and complex-analytic arguments involved in the context of concentration inequalities. In particular, in the process of deriving uniform results, we obtain a refinement over the proof of a previous result by the first and fourth authors together with A. Guerra and P. Tilli, further improving the current understanding of the geometry of near extremals in all contexts under consideration.

Abstract:We investigate the long time behavior of the critical mass Patlak-Keller-Segel equation. This equation has a one parameter family of steady-state solutions $\rho_\lambda$, $\lambda>0$, with thick tails whose second moment is not bounded. We show that these steady state solutions are stable, and find basins of attraction for them using an entropy functional ${\mathcal H}_\lambda$ coming from the critical fast diffusion equation in $\R^2$. We construct solutions of Patlak-Keller-Segel equation satisfying an entropy-entropy dissipation inequality for ${\mathcal H}_\lambda$. While the entropy dissipation for ${\mathcal H}_\lambda$ is strictly positive, it turns out to be a difference of two terms, neither of which need to be small when the dissipation is small. We introduce a strategy of "controlled concentration" to deal with this issue, and then use the regularity obtained from the entropy-entropy dissipation inequality to prove the existence of basins of attraction for each stationary state composed by certain initial data converging towards $\rho_\lambda$. In the present paper, we do not provide any estimate of the rate of convergence, but we discuss how this would result from a stability result for a certain sharp Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequality.

Abstract:Using the error bound results established in the present paper for approximate solutions, we study the stability issues when perturbed by possibly nonaffine smooth maps E for the abstract inequality system F >=(K) 0 defined by a (possible nonclosed) convex cone K and a Frechet differentiable function F satisfying the (extended) weak gamma-condition. We provide some sufficient conditions, in terms of the information at a solution x(0), for ensuring the lower semicontinuity and/or the Lipschitz-like continuity at x(0) of the solution mapping for the perturbed system F + E >=(K) 0 with smooth perturbation E. Explicit upper bounds of the Lipschitz-like moduli are also provided.

Abstract:For dynamical systems modeled by a Young tower with exponential tails, we prove an exponential concentration inequality for all separately Lipschitz observables of n variables. When tails are polynomial, we prove polynomial concentration inequalities. Those inequalities are optimal. We give some applications of such inequalities to specific systems and specific observables.

Abstract:This paper studies concentration inequalities for functions of locally dependent random variables. We show that the usual definition of local dependence does not imply concentration for general Hamming Lipschitz functions. We define hypergraph dependence, which is a special case of local dependence, and show that it implies concentration if the maximal neighborhood size is small. We prove concentration in Hamming distance, Talagrand distance, and for self-bounding functions of a particular type under this dependence structure.

Abstract:Concentration inequalities, a major tool in probability theory, quantify how much a random variable deviates from a certain quantity. This paper proposes a systematic convex optimization approach to studying and generating concentration inequalities with independent random variables. Specifically, we extend the generalized problem of moments to independent random variables. We first introduce a variational approach that extends classical moment-generating functions, focusing particularly on first-order moment conditions. Second, we develop a polynomial approach, based on a hierarchy of sum-of-square approximations, to extend these techniques to higher-moment conditions. Building on these advancements, we refine Hoeffding's, Bennett's and Bernstein's inequalities, providing improved worst-case guarantees compared to existing results.

Abstract:This paper deduces exponential matrix concentration from a Poincaré inequality via a short, conceptual argument. Among other examples, this theory applies to matrix-valued functions of a uniformly log-concave random vector. The proof relies on the subadditivity of Poincaré inequalities and a chain rule inequality for the trace of the matrix Dirichlet form. It also uses a symmetrization technique to avoid difficulties associated with a direct extension of the classic scalar argument.

Abstract:We consider a random variable $X$ that takes values in a (possibly infinite-dimensional) topological vector space $\mathcal{X}$. We show that, with respect to an appropriate "normal distance" on $\mathcal{X}$, concentration inequalities for linear and non-linear functions of $X$ are equivalent. This normal distance corresponds naturally to the concentration rate in classical concentration results such as Gaussian concentration and concentration on the Euclidean and Hamming cubes. Under suitable assumptions on the roundness of the sets of interest, the concentration inequalities so obtained are asymptotically optimal in the high-dimensional limit.

Abstract:Abstract We prove several different anti-concentration inequalities for functions of independent Bernoulli-distributed random variables. First, motivated by a conjecture of Alon, Hefetz, Krivelevich and Tyomkyn, we prove some “Poisson-type” anti-concentration theorems that give bounds of the form 1/ e + o (1) for the point probabilities of certain polynomials. Second, we prove an anti-concentration inequality for polynomials with nonnegative coefficients which extends the classical Erdős–Littlewood–Offord theorem and improves a theorem of Meka, Nguyen and Vu for polynomials of this type. As an application, we prove some new anti-concentration bounds for subgraph counts in random graphs.

Exact Exponents for Concentration and Isoperimetry in Product Polish Spaces

Abstract:In this paper, we derive variational formulas for the asymptotic exponents (i.e., convergence rates) of the concentration and isoperimetric functions in the product Polish probability space under certain mild assumptions. These formulas are expressed in terms of relative entropies (which are from information theory) and optimal transport cost functionals (which are from optimal transport theory). Hence, our results verify an intimate connection among information theory, optimal transport, and concentration of measure or isoperimetric inequalities. In the concentration regime, the corresponding variational formula is in fact a dimension-free bound in the sense that this bound is valid for any dimension. A cardinality bound for the alphabet of the auxiliary random variable in the expression of the asymptotic isoperimetric exponent is provided, which makes the expression computable by a finite-dimensional program for the finite alphabet case. We lastly apply our results to obtain an isoperimetric inequality in the classic isoperimetric setting, which is asymptotically sharp under certain conditions. The proofs in this paper are based on information-theoretic and optimal transport techniques.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the following Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality: (∫_ℝ^n|x|^-pa|∇ u|^pdx)^1/p≥ S(p,a,b)(∫_ℝ^n|x|^-qb|u|^qdx)^1/q, ∀ u∈ D_a^p(ℝ^n), where S(p,a,b) is the sharp constant and a,b,p,q satisfy the relations: 0≤ a, which enables us to reduce the inequality to some well-studied ones. Based on the gradient stability, we establish several refined Sobolev-type embeddings involving weak Lebesgue norms for functions supported in general domains. In the critical point setting, we use some careful expansion techniques motivated by Figalli and Neumayer to handle the nonlinearity appeared in the Euler-Lagrange equations. We believe that the ideas presented in this paper can be applied to treat other weighted Sobolev-type inequalities.

Abstract:Many statistics of roots of random polynomials have been studied in the literature, but not much is known on the concentration aspect. In this note we present a systematic study of this question, aiming towards nearly optimal bounds to some extent. Our method is elementary and works well for many models of random polynomials, with gaussian or non-gaussian coefficients.

Abstract:We consider the problem of stability for the Prékopa-Leindler inequality. Exploiting properties of the transport map between radially decreasing functions and a suitable functional version of the trace inequality, we obtain a uniform stability exponent for the Prékopa-Leindler inequality. Our result yields an exponent not only uniform in the dimension but also in the log-concavity parameter $\tau = \min(\lambda,1-\lambda)$ associated with its respective version of the Prékopa-Leindler inequality. As a further application of our methods, we prove a sharp stability result for log-concave functions in dimension 1, which also extends to a sharp stability result for log-concave radial functions in higher dimensions.

Abstract:This paper derives exponential tail bounds and polynomial moment inequalities for the spectral norm deviation of a random matrix from its mean value. The argument depends on a matrix extension of Stein's method of exchangeable pairs for concentration of measure, as introduced by Chatterjee. Recent work of Mackey et al. uses these techniques to analyze random matrices with additive structure, while the enhancements in this paper cover a wider class of matrix-valued random elements. In particular, these ideas lead to a bounded differences inequality that applies to random matrices constructed from weakly dependent random variables. The proofs require novel trace inequalities that may be of independent interest.

Abstract:The Entropy method provides a powerful framework for proving scalar concentration inequalities by establishing functional inequalities like Poincare and log-Sobolev inequalities. These inequalities are especially useful for deriving concentration for dependent distributions coming from stationary distributions of Markov chains. In contrast to the scalar case, the study of matrix concentration inequalities is fairly recent and there does not seem to be a general framework for proving matrix concentration inequalities using the Entropy method. In this paper, we initiate the study of Matrix valued functional inequalities and show how matrix valued functional inequalities can be used to establish a kind of iterative variance comparison argument to prove Matrix Bernstein like inequalities. Strong Rayleigh distributions are a class of distributions which satisfy a strong form of negative dependence properties. We show that scalar Poincare inequalities recently established for a flip-swap markov chain considered in the work of Hermon and Salez [HS19] can be lifted to prove matrix valued Poincare inequalities. This can then be combined with the iterative variance argument to prove a version of matrix Bernstein inequality for Lipshitz matrix-valued functions for Strong Rayleigh measures.

Abstract:This work introduces analytical tools for investigating stability regions of parametric polynomials. Our approach extends the classical D -decomposition method to accommodate any number of parameters, whether linearly or non-linearly involved in the coefficients of a polynomial ψ . Through Hermite's stability method, we establish the existence of stability regions within the parameter space, where all roots of ψ reside exclusively in the closed left half complex plane, defining the stability boundary. To identify points within the stability region, we employ the quotient and remainder from the Euclidean division of ψ by specific polynomials. Additionally, we introduce the 'dynamics correlator', a polynomial expressing ψ in its assignable roots space, whose zero set generalises the Root Locus. Confluence polynomials and loci, derived from the dynamics correlator, are used to realise stabilisability strategies. Extensive numerical examples demonstrate the application and effectiveness of the proposed methods in stabilising challenging systems and meeting additional performance criteria.
