Abstract:When an atom (or two-level system) is illuminated by a coherent beam of photons, it will cyclically absorb photons and re-emit them by stimulated emission, which is called Rabi oscillation. By using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, Maxwell-Schrodinger equation is solved for modeling the Rabi oscillation. The proposed method is compared with the existing approximate theoretical models. It is found that these approximate models break down in certain cases where a rigorous self-consistent numerical approach is needed. This work is helpful for the EM simulation of emerging nanodevices or next-generation quantum electrodynamic systems.

Abstract:The modified Jaynes-Cummings model of a single two-level atom placed in the common domain of two cavities or interacting with two quantized modes is studied by a dynamical algebraic method. With the help of an SU(2) algebraic structure, we then obtain the eigenvalues, eigenstates, time evolution operator and atomic inversion operator for the system. We proceed to investigate the modified Jaynes-Cummings model governed by the Milburn equation and present the exact solution of the Milburn equation.

Abstract:The Aharonov-Bohm effect is a genuine quantum effect typically characterized by a measurable phase shift in the wave function for a charged particle that encircles an electromagnetic field located in a region inaccessible to the mentioned particle. However, this definition is not possible in the majority of the phase space descriptions since they are based on quasiprobability distributions. In this work, we characterize for the first time the Aharonov-Bohm effect within two different formalisms of quantum mechanics. One of them is the phase-space formalism relying on the canonical commutation relations and Weyl transform. In this framework, the aim is to obtain a consistent description of the quantum system by means of the quasiprobability Wigner function. The other one is the Segal-Bargmann formalism, which we mathematically describe and connect with quantum mechanics by means of the commutation relations of the creation and annihilation operators. After an introduction of both formalisms, we study the Aharonov-Bohm effect within them for two specific cases: One determined by a non-zero electric potential, and another determined by a non-zero magnetic vector potential. Subsequently, we obtain a more general description of the Aharonov-Bohm effect that encompasses the two previous cases and that we prove to be equivalent to the well-known description of this effect in the usual quantum mechanics formalism in configuration space. Finally, we delve into the Aharonov-Bohm effect, employing a density operator to depict states with positional and momentum uncertainty, showcasing its manifestation through distinctive interference patterns in the temporal evolution of Wigner functions under an electric potential, and emphasizing the intrinsically quantum nature of this phenomenon.

Abstract:We apply two approximate solutions of the quantum-classical Liouville equation (QCLE) in the mapping representation to the simulation of the laser-induced response of a quantum subsystem coupled to a classical environment. These solutions, known as the Poisson Bracket Mapping Equation (PBME) and the Forward-Backward (FB) trajectory solutions, involve simple algorithms in which the dynamics of both the quantum and classical degrees of freedom are described in terms of continuous variables, as opposed to standard surface-hopping solutions in which the classical degrees of freedom hop between potential energy surfaces dictated by the discrete adiabatic state of the quantum subsystem. The validity of these QCLE-based solutions is tested on a non-trivial electron transfer model involving more than two quantum states, a time-dependent Hamiltonian, strong subsystem-bath coupling, and an initial energy shift between the donor and acceptor states that depends on the strength of the subsystem-bath coupling. In particular, we calculate the time-dependent population of the photoexcited donor state in response to an ultrafast, on-resonance pump pulse in a three-state model of an electron transfer complex that is coupled asymmetrically to a bath of harmonic oscillators through the optically dark acceptor state. Within this approach, the three-state electron transfer complex is treated quantum mechanically, while the bath oscillators are treated classically. When compared to the more accurate QCLE-based surface-hopping solution and to the numerically exact quantum results, we find that the PBME solution is not capable of qualitatively capturing the population dynamics, whereas the FB solution is. However, when the subsystem-bath coupling is decreased (which also decreases the initial energy shift between the donor and acceptor states) or the initial shift is removed altogether, both the PBME and FB results agree better with the QCLE-based surface-hopping results. These findings highlight the challenges posed by various conditions such as a time-dependent external field, the strength of the subsystem-bath coupling, and the degree of asymmetry on the accuracy of the PBME and FB algorithms. Abstract:We investigate a Hamiltonian with radial potential wells and an Aharonov-Bohm vector potential with two poles. Assuming that the potential wells are symmetric, we derive the semi-classical asymptotics of the splitting between the ground and second state energies. The flux effects due to the Aharonov-Bohm vector potential are of lower order compared to the contributions coming from the potential wells.

We begin by deriving the radial Schrödinger wave equation, incorporating an anharmonic oscillator potential, which is a superposition of a harmonic oscillator and an inverse square potential, along with a constant term. The eigenvalue solution is obtained through the confluent Heun equation focusing on the ground state energy level and the radial wave function for the radial mode $n=1$ as an example and analyze the results. Subsequently, we use these results in molecular potential models, considering pseudoharmonic and shifted pseudoharmonic potentials. The derived eigenvalue solutions provide insights into the behavior of particles within these potentials. Expanding our exploration, we study the quantum system featuring only an inverse square potential in the presence of the quantum flux field in the same geometry background. Employing the same procedure, we determine the ground state energy level and the radial wave function. Notably, our findings reveal that the eigenvalue solutions are significantly influenced by the topological defect characterized by the parameter $\beta$, and the quantum flux field $\Phi_{AB}$. This influence manifests as a shift in the energy spectrum, drawing parallels to the gravitational analog of the Aharonov-Bohm effect.

Influence of momentum confinement in the phase-space dynamics of the Kramers-Henneberger atom

Abstract:We investigate the phase-space dynamics of the Kramers Henneberger (KH) atom solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for reduced-dimensionality models and using Wigner quasiprobability distributions. We find that, for the time-averaged KH potential, coherent superpositions of eigenstates perform a cyclic motion confined in momentum space, whose frequency is proportional to the energy difference between the two KH eigenstates. This cyclic motion is also present if the full time dependent dynamics are taken into consideration. However, there are time delays regarding the time-averaged potential, and some tail-shaped spilling of the quasiprobability flow towards higher momentum regions. These tails are signatures of ionization, indicating that vanishingly small drift momentum is instrumental for stabilization. A comparison of the quasiprobability flow with classical phase-space constraints shows that, for the KH atom, confinement occurs in momentum space. This is a major difference from a molecule, for which the quasiprobability flow is confined in position space for small internuclear separation. Furthermore, we assess the stability of different propagation strategies and find that the most stable scenario for the full dynamics is obtained if the system is initially prepared in the KH ground state.

Abstract:The Kuramoto model serves as a paradigm for describing spontaneous synchronization in a system of classical interacting rotors. In this study, we extend this model to the quantum domain by coupling quantum interacting rotors to external baths following the Caldeira-Leggett approach. Studying the mean-field model in the overdamped limit using Feynman-Vernon theory, we show how quantum mechanics modifies the phase diagram. Specifically, we demonstrate that quantum fluctuations hinder the emergence of synchronization, albeit not entirely suppressing it. We examine the phase transition into the synchronized phase at various temperatures, revealing that classical results are recovered at high temperatures while a quantum phase transition occurs at zero temperature. Additionally, we derive an analytical expression for the critical coupling, highlighting its dependence on the model parameters, and examine the differences between classical and quantum behavior.

Abstract:The Aharonov-Bohm effect is investigated in two-dimensional, single-terminal quantum rings in magnetic fields by using time-dependent density-functional theory. We find multiple transport loops leading to the oscillation periods of h/(en), where n is the number of loops. We show that the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are relatively weakly affected by the electron-electron interactions, whereas the ring width has a strong effect on the characteristics of the oscillations. Our results propose that in experimental quantum-ring devices showing clear Aharonov-Bohm oscillations the electron current is dominated by a few states along narrow conduction channels.

Role of electromagnetic energy and momentum in the Aharonov–Bohm effect

Abstract:We analyse the physical meaning of the Aharonov–Bohm (AB) phase based on its representation through electromagnetic (EM) potentials as a sum of four components, which, in addition to the known electric and magnetic phase components, contains two more terms recently disclosed by our team in the analysis of quantum phase effects for dipoles and charges, and which we named the complementary electric AB phase and the complementary magnetic AB phase. Using the complete expression for the AB phase, we reveal that the phase component, explicitly depending on time, is determined by the interactional electric energy, while the phase component, explicitly depending on the velocity of charge, is determined by the interactional EM momentum for an isolated system ‘source of EM field and charge’. These findings shed new light on the origin of the AB phase and, in particular, allow us to generalize the de Broglie relationship and the Heisenberg uncertainty relations for a charged particle in an EM field.

Abstract:The celebrated Aharonov-Bohm effect is perhaps the first example in which the the interplay between classical topology and quantum theory was explored. This connection has continued to shed light on diverse areas of physics like quantum statistics, anomalies, condensed matter physics, and gauge theories. Several attempts were made to generalize the Aharonov-Bohm effect by modifying the simple solenoidal current distribution used by them to the case of multiple solenoids, and a toroidal solenoid, for example. A particularly ambitious task is to confine the magnetic flux to the interior of a knotted solenoid. While it is to be expected that a non-trivial phase factor will be picked up by the wave function of a charged particle travelling in the complement of the knot in three-dimensional space, the lack of symmetry defied attempts to explicitly solve the associated scattering problem. In this paper we report on a way to make progress towards this problem based on multipole expansions. The vector potential produced by a knot is obtained by making a multipole expansion, which is then used to calculate the S-matrix for the scattering of the charged particle, in the Born approximation. It is found that the S-matrix carries an imprint of the knottedness at the octopole order. For the case of a torus knot, a curious factorization property is seen to hold.

Bound States and Scattering Resonances Induced by Spatially Modulated Interactions

Abstract:We study the two-body problem with a spatially modulated interaction potential using a two-channel model, in which the interchannel coupling is provided by an optical standing wave and its strength modulates periodically in space. As the modulation amplitudes increase, there will appear a sequence of bound states. Part of them will cause a divergence of the effective scattering length, defined through the phase shift in the asymptotic behavior of scattering states. We also discuss how the local scattering length, defined through short-range behavior of scattering states, modulates spatially in different regimes. These results provide a theoretical guideline for a new control technique in the cold atom toolbox, in particular, for alkaline-earth(-like) atoms where the inelastic loss is small.
Topological schemes for the electrodynamic Aharonov-Bohm effect

Abstract:We consider different schemes for the electrodynamic Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect introduced in Ref. [Phys. Rev. A $\mathbf{108}$, 062218 (2023)], exploring subtleties of the phenomenon to enhance the understanding of its topological nature. In the treated examples, the electric current in a solenoid varies in time, changing its internal magnetic field and producing an external electric field, while a quantum charged particle is in a superposition state inside two Faraday cages in an interferometer. The Faraday cages cancel the electric field at their interiors, such that the particle is always subjected to null electromagnetic fields. We discuss how the AB phase difference depends on the topology of the electric and magnetic fields in spacetime in the different treated situations.

Abstract:Motivated by a recent proposal on the possibility of observing a monopole in the band structure, and by an increasing interest in the role of Berry phase in spintronics, we reconsidered the problem of adiabatic motion of a wave packet of Bloch functions, under a perturbation varying slowly and incommensurately to the lattice structure. We showed, using only the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, that the effective wave-packet dynamics of Bloch electrons is conveniently described by a set of equations of motion (EOM) in which a non-Abelian Berry phase associated with the internal degree of freedom appears.
Application of Abel-Plana formula for collapse and revival of Rabi oscillations in Jaynes-Cummings model

Abstract:In this paper, we give an analytical treatment to study the behavior of the collapse and the revival of the Rabi oscillations in the Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM). The JCM is an exactly soluble quantum mechanical model, which describes the interaction between a two-level atom and a single cavity mode of the electromagnetic field. If we prepare the atom in the ground state and the cavity mode in a coherent state initially, the JCM causes the collapse and the revival of the Rabi oscillations many times in a complicated pattern in its time-evolution. In this phenomenon, the atomic population inversion is described with an intractable infinite series. (When the electromagnetic field is resonant with the atom, the $n$th term of this infinite series is given by a trigonometric function for $\sqrt{n}t$, where $t$ is a variable of the time.) According to Klimov and Chumakov's method, using the Abel-Plana formula, we rewrite this infinite series as a sum of two integrals. We examine the physical meanings of these two integrals and find that the first one represents the initial collapse (the semi-classical limit) and the second one represents the revival (the quantum correction) in the JCM. Furthermore, we evaluate the first and second-order perturbations for the time-evolution of the JCM with an initial thermal coherent state for the cavity mode at low temperature, and write down their correction terms as sums of integrals by making use of the Abel-Plana formula.

Abstract:With usual bosonization method, we study a single transverse-mode ring with an Aharonov–Bohm flux, and show that the ground state energy and persistent current of the system are periodic functions of the flux with a basic period Φ0=hc/e, and depend on the parity of the fermion number. Moreover, we show the persistent current is increasing with the fermion interaction strength in the weak repulsive interaction region, which is different from previous calculations in which the persistent current decreases as increasing the fermion interaction strength.

Abstract:Motivated by recent developments of hydrodynamical quantum mechanical analogs [J. W. M. Bush, Annu. Rev. Fluid Mech. 47, 269-292 (2015)], we provide a relativistic model for a classical particle coupled to a scalar wave field through a holonomic constraint. In the presence of an external Coulomb field, we define a regime where the particle is guided by the wave in a way similar to the old de Broglie phase-wave proposal. Moreover, this dualistic mechanical analog of the quantum theory is reminiscent of the double-solution approach suggested by de Broglie in 1927 and is able to reproduce the Bohr-Sommerfeld semiclassical quantization formula for an electron moving in an atom.
