Abstract:We investigate a Hamiltonian with radial potential wells and an Aharonov-Bohm vector potential with two poles. Assuming that the potential wells are symmetric, we derive the semi-classical asymptotics of the splitting between the ground and second state energies. The flux effects due to the Aharonov-Bohm vector potential are of lower order compared to the contributions coming from the potential wells.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Attempts to Solve This paper aims to investigate the relationship between quantum tunneling and the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Specifically: 1. **Research Background**: - In the presence of symmetric potential wells, the ground state energy splitting of the semiclassical Schrödinger operator is very small, a phenomenon known as quantum tunneling. - Under a uniform magnetic field, the electron wave function is no longer real-valued and has a non-trivial phase, making its approximation and decay more complex. - Recent studies have shown that quantum tunneling can be observed in the presence of non-uniform magnetic fields and symmetric radial potential wells. 2. **Main Objectives**: - The main purpose of this paper is to understand how the Aharonov-Bohm effect influences quantum tunneling. Specifically, the authors investigate how the magnetic vector potential affects energy level splitting and the structure of eigenfunctions. - Through two theorems (Theorem 1.2 and Theorem 1.4), the authors quantify the dependence of energy level splitting (i.e., tunneling amplitude) on the magnetic flux. 3. **Aharonov-Bohm Potential**: - Introduces a vector potential that generates zero magnetic field but has a fixed total magnetic flux. - Studies the impact of the Aharonov-Bohm potential with different magnetic fluxes on the tunneling effect. 4. **Double Potential Well System**: - Considers the case of two symmetric potential wells and investigates how the Aharonov-Bohm vector potential affects quantum tunneling between these two wells. - Provides specific formulas for energy level splitting, demonstrating the impact of magnetic flux on the tunneling effect. 5. **Conclusion**: - Through theoretical analysis, the authors demonstrate that in the presence of the Aharonov-Bohm potential, the quantum tunneling effect is influenced by the magnetic flux, thereby altering the energy level splitting. Overall, this paper aims to delve into the role of the Aharonov-Bohm effect in quantum tunneling and provides a mathematical quantitative description.
