Abstract:It is shown that any handle-irreducible summand of every stable-ribbon surface-link is a unique ribbon surface-link up to equivalences. This is a generalization of a previously observed result for a stably trivial surface-link. Two applications are given. One application is an observation that a connected sum of two surface-links is a ribbon surface-link if and only if both of the connected summands are ribbon surface-links. The other application is an observation that any sphere-link consisting of trivial components is a ribbon sphere-link.

Ribbonness of Kervaire's sphere-link in homotopy 4-sphere and its consequences to 2-complexes

Abstract:M. A. Kervaire showed that every group of deficiency $d$ and weight $d$ is the fundamental group of a smooth sphere-link of $d$ components in a smooth homotopy 4-sphere. In the use of the smooth unknotting conjecture and the smooth 4D Poincar{é} conjecture, any such sphere-link is shown to be a sublink of a free ribbon sphere-link in the 4-sphere. Since every ribbon sphere-link in the 4-sphere is also shown to be a sublink of a free ribbon sphere-link in the 4-sphere, Kervaire's sphere-link and the ribbon sphere-link are equivalent concepts. By applying this result to a ribbon disk-link in the 4-disk, it is shown that the compact complement of every ribbon disk-link in the 4-disk is aspherical. By this property, a ribbon disk-link presentation for every contractible finite 2-complex is introduced. By using this presentation, it is shown that every connected subcomplex of a contractible finite 2-complex is aspherical (meaning partially yes for Whitehead aspherical conjecture).

Note on surface-link of trivial components

Abstract:As a previous result, it has shown that every sphere-link consisting of trivial components is a ribbon sphere-link. In this note, it is shown that for every closed oriented disconnected surface F with just one non-sphere component, every F-link consisting of trivial components is a ribbon surface-link. Further, it is shown that for every closed oriented disconnected surface F containing at least two non-sphere components, there exist a pair of a ribbon F-link and a non-ribbon F-link that consist of trivial components and have meridian-preservingly isomorphic fundamental groups.

Abstract:Whitehead aspherical conjecture says that every connected subcomplex of every aspherical 2-complex is aspherical. By an argument on ribbon sphere-links, it is confirmed that the conjecture is true for every contractible finite 2-complex. In this paper, by generalizing this argument, this conjecture is confirmed to be true for every aspherical 2-complex.

Abstract:We explain a direct topological proof for the multiplicativity of Duflo isomorphism for arbitrary finite dimensional Lie algebras, and derive the explicit formula for the Duflo map. The proof follows a series of implications, starting with "the calculation 1+1=2 on a 4D abacus", using the study of homomorphic expansions (aka universal finite type invariants) for ribbon 2-knots, and the relationship between the corresponding associated graded space of arrow diagrams and universal enveloping algebras. This complements the results of the first author, Le and Thurston, where similar arguments using a "3D abacus" and the Kontsevich Integral were used to derive Duflo's theorem for metrized Lie algebras; and results of the first two authors on finite type invariants of w-knotted objects, which also imply a relation of 2-knots with Duflo's theorem in full generality, though via a lengthier path.

Linear Upper Bounds on the Ribbonlength of Knots and Links

Abstract:A knotted ribbon is one of physical aspect of a knot. A folded ribbon knot is a depiction of a knot obtained by folding a long and thin rectangular strip to become flat. The ribbonlength of a knot type can be defined as the minimum length required to tie the given knot type as a folded ribbon knot. The ribbonlength has been conjectured to grow linearly or sub-linearly with respect to a minimal crossing number. Several knot types provide evidence that this conjecture is true, but there is no proof for general cases. In this paper, we show that for any knot or link, the ribbonlength is bounded by a linear function of the crossing number. In more detail, $$ \text{Rib}(K) \leq 2.5 c(K)+1. $$ for a knot or link $K$. Our approach involves binary grid diagrams and bisected vertex leveling techniques.

One corollary to our main theorem is as follows. A 2-dimensional fibered knot whose fiber is the punctured 3-dimensional torus is not ribbon-move equivalent to any 2-dimensional knot whose Seifert hypersurface is a punctured homology sphere.
Bounding the ribbon numbers of knots and links

Abstract:The ribbon number $r(K)$ of a ribbon knot $K \subset S^3$ is the minimal number of ribbon intersections contained in any ribbon disk bounded by $K$. We find new lower bounds for $r(K)$ using $\det(K)$ and $\Delta_K(t)$, and we prove that the set $\mathfrak{R}_r~=~\{\Delta_K(t)~:~r(K)~\leq~r\}$ is finite and computable. We determine $\mathfrak{R}_2$ and $\mathfrak{R}_3$, applying our results to compute the ribbon numbers for all ribbon knots with 11 or fewer crossings, with three exceptions. Finally, we find lower bounds for ribbon numbers of links derived from their Jones polynomials.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a knot in an integral homology 3-sphere $Y$, and $\Sigma$ the corresponding $n$-fold cyclic branched cover. Assuming that $\Sigma$ is a rational homology sphere (which is always the case when $n$ is a prime power), we give a formula for the Lefschetz number of the action that the covering translation induces on the reduced monopole homology of $\Sigma$. The proof relies on a careful analysis of the Seiberg--Witten equations on 3-orbifolds and of various $\eta$-invariants. We give several applications of our formula: (1) we calculate the Seiberg--Witten and Furuta--Ohta invariants for the mapping tori of all semi-free actions of $Z/n$ on integral homology 3-spheres; (2) we give a novel obstruction (in terms of the Jones polynomial) for the branched cover of a knot in $S^3$ being an $L$-space; (3) we give a new set of knot concordance invariants in terms of the monopole Lefschetz numbers of covering translations on the branched covers.

Abstract:A link diagram can be considered as a $4$-valent graph embedded in the $2$-sphere and divides the sphere into complementary regions. In this paper, we show that any link has a diagram with only triangles and quadrilaterals. This extends previous results shown by the authors and C. Adams.

Abstract:A quandle can always trivially color an orientable surface-link. This note shows that the surface-link $10_1^{-1,-1}$ of Yoshikawa's table cannot be colored by a symmetric dihedral quandle of order 4, and explains how this obstructs a generalized ribbon concordance between another link of two projective planes $8_1^{-1,-1}$ that does admit a coloring by the same symmetric dihedral quandle.

Abstract:It is well known that there is a somewhat mysterious relation between the area of the quartic Fermat curve $x^4+y^4=1$, aka squircle, and the arc length of the lemniscate $(x^2+y^2)^2=x^2-y^2$. The standardproof of this fact uses relations between elliptic integrals and the gamma function. In this article we generalize this result to relate areas of sectors of the squircle to arc lengths of segments of the lemniscate. We provide a geometric interpretation of this relation and an elementary proof of the relation, which only uses basic integral calculus.

Abstract:We investigate a generalization of the classical notion of a Schur functor associated to a ribbon diagram. These functors are defined with respect to an arbitrary algebra, and in the case that the underlying algebra is the symmetric/exterior algebra, we recover the classical definition of Schur/Weyl functors, respectively. In general, we construct a family of 3-term complexes categorifying the classical concatenation/near-concatenation identity for symmetric functions, and one of our main results is that the exactness of these 3-term complexes is equivalent to the Koszul property of the underlying algebra $A$. We further generalize these ribbon Schur functors to the notion of a multi-Schur functor and construct a canonical filtration of these objects whose associated graded pieces are described explicitly; one consequence of this filtration is a complete equivariant description of the syzygies of arbitrary Segre products of Koszul modules over the Segre product of Koszul algebras. Further applications to the equivariant structure of derived invariants, symmetric function identities, and Koszulness of certain classes of modules are explored at the end, along with a characteristic-free computation of the regularity of a Schur functor applied to the tautological subbundle on projective space.

Abstract:Knotted ribbons form an important topic in knot theory. They have applications in natural sciences, such as cyclic duplex DNA modeling. A flat knotted ribbon can be obtained by gently pulling a knotted ribbon tight so that it becomes flat and folded. An important problem in knot theory is to study the minimal ratio of length to width of a flat knotted ribbon. This minimal ratio is called the ribbonlength of the knot. It has been conjectured that the ribbonlength has an upper bound and a lower bound which are both linear in the crossing number of the knot. In the first part of the paper, we use grid diagrams to construct flat knotted ribbons and prove an explicit quadratic upper bound on the ribbonlength for all non-trivial knots. We then improve the quadratic upper bound to a linear upper bound for all non-trivial torus knots and twist knots. Our approach of using grid diagrams to study flat knotted ribbons is novel and can likely be used to obtain a linear upper bound for more general families of knots. In the second part of the paper, we obtain a sharper linear upper bound on the ribbonlength for nontrivial twist knots by constructing a flat knotted ribbon via folding the ribbon over itself multiple times to shorten the length.
