Abstract:M. A. Kervaire showed that every group of deficiency $d$ and weight $d$ is the fundamental group of a smooth sphere-link of $d$ components in a smooth homotopy 4-sphere. In the use of the smooth unknotting conjecture and the smooth 4D Poincar{é} conjecture, any such sphere-link is shown to be a sublink of a free ribbon sphere-link in the 4-sphere. Since every ribbon sphere-link in the 4-sphere is also shown to be a sublink of a free ribbon sphere-link in the 4-sphere, Kervaire's sphere-link and the ribbon sphere-link are equivalent concepts. By applying this result to a ribbon disk-link in the 4-disk, it is shown that the compact complement of every ribbon disk-link in the 4-disk is aspherical. By this property, a ribbon disk-link presentation for every contractible finite 2-complex is introduced. By using this presentation, it is shown that every connected subcomplex of a contractible finite 2-complex is aspherical (meaning partially yes for Whitehead aspherical conjecture).

Abstract:It is shown that any handle-irreducible summand of every stable-ribbon surface-link is a unique ribbon surface-link up to equivalences, so that every stable-ribbon surface-link is a ribbon surface-link. This is a generalization of a previously observed result for a stably trivial surface-link. Two applications are given. One application is an observation that a connected sum of two surface-links is a ribbon surface-link if and only if both the connected summands are ribbon surface-links. The other application is an observation that any sphere-link consisting of trivial components is a ribbon sphere-link, so that the fundamental group is a torsion-free group.

The Kervaire conjecture and the minimal complexity of surfaces

Abstract:The Kervaire conjecture asserts that adding a generator and then a relator to a nontrivial group always results in a nontrivial group. We introduce new methods from stable commutator length to study this type of problems about nontriviality of one-relator quotients. Roughly, we show that surfaces in certain HNN extensions bounding a given word have complexity no less than the complexity of its boundary. A consequence of this is a Freiheitssatz theorem for HNN extensions, which in particular implies and gives a new proof of Klyachko's theorem that confirms the Kervaire conjecture for torsion-free groups. As another application, we also generalize the following theorem of Klyachko-Lurye to HNN extensions: For any group $G$ and the quotient $Q$ of $G\star\mathbb{Z}$ by any proper power $w^m$ with $w\in G\star\mathbb{Z}$ projecting to $1\in\mathbb{Z}$, the natural map $G\to Q$ is injective.

On the rank of knot homology theories and concordance

Abstract:For a ribbon knot, it is a folk conjecture that the rank of its knot Floer homology must be 1 modulo 8, and another folk conjecture says the same about reduced Khovanov homology. We give the first counter-examples to both of these folk conjectures, but at the same time present compelling evidence for new conjectures that either of these homologies must have rank congruent to 1 modulo 4 for any ribbon knot. We prove that each revised conjecture is equivalent to showing that taking the rank of the homology modulo 4 gives a homomorphism of the knot concordance group. We check the revised conjectures for 2.4 million ribbon knots, and also prove they hold for ribbon knots with fusion number 1.

Abstract:Whitehead aspherical conjecture says that every connected subcomplex of every aspherical 2-complex is aspherical. By an argument on ribbon sphere-links, it is confirmed that the conjecture is true for every contractible finite 2-complex. In this paper, by generalizing this argument, this conjecture is confirmed to be true for every aspherical 2-complex.

Positive Knots and Ribbon Concordance

Abstract:Ribbon concordances between knots generalize the notion of ribbon knots. Agol, building on work of Gordon, proved ribbon concordance gives a partial order on knots in $S^3$. In previous work, the author and Greene conjectured that positive knots are minimal in this ordering. In this note we prove this conjecture for a large class of positive knots, and show that a positive knot cannot be expressed as a non-trivial band sum -- both results extend earlier theorems of Greene and the author for special alternating knots. In a related direction, we prove that if positive knots $K$ and $K'$ are concordant and $|\sigma(K)| \geq 2g(K) - 2$, then $K$ and $K'$ have isomorphic rational Alexander modules. This strengthens a result of Stoimenow, and gives evidence toward a conjecture that any concordance class contains at most one positive knot.

A Note on Pure Braids and Link Concordance

Abstract:The knot concordance group can be contextualized as organizing problems about 3- and 4-dimensional spaces and the relationships between them. Every 3-manifold is surgery on some link, not necessarily a knot, and thus it is natural to ask about such a group for links. In 1988, Le Dimet constructed the string link concordance groups and in 1998, Habegger and Lin precisely characterized these groups as quotients of the link concordance sets using a group action. Notably, the knot concordance group is abelian while, for each $n$, the string link concordance group on $n$ strands is non-abelian as it contains the pure braid group on $n$ strands as a subgroup. In this work, we prove that even the quotient of each string link concordance group by its pure braid subgroup is non-abelian.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a knot in an integral homology 3-sphere $Y$, and $\Sigma$ the corresponding $n$-fold cyclic branched cover. Assuming that $\Sigma$ is a rational homology sphere (which is always the case when $n$ is a prime power), we give a formula for the Lefschetz number of the action that the covering translation induces on the reduced monopole homology of $\Sigma$. The proof relies on a careful analysis of the Seiberg--Witten equations on 3-orbifolds and of various $\eta$-invariants. We give several applications of our formula: (1) we calculate the Seiberg--Witten and Furuta--Ohta invariants for the mapping tori of all semi-free actions of $Z/n$ on integral homology 3-spheres; (2) we give a novel obstruction (in terms of the Jones polynomial) for the branched cover of a knot in $S^3$ being an $L$-space; (3) we give a new set of knot concordance invariants in terms of the monopole Lefschetz numbers of covering translations on the branched covers.

Abstract:As a previous result, it has shown that every sphere-link consisting of trivial components is a ribbon sphere-link. In this note, it is shown that for every closed oriented disconnected surface F with just one non-sphere component, every F-link consisting of trivial components is a ribbon surface-link. Further, it is shown that for every closed oriented disconnected surface F containing at least two non-sphere components, there exist a pair of a ribbon F-link and a non-ribbon F-link that consist of trivial components and have meridian-preservingly isomorphic fundamental groups.

Distinguishing 2-knots admitting circle actions by fundamental groups

Abstract:A 2-sphere embedded in the 4-sphere invariant under a circle action is called a branched twist spin. A branched twist spin is constructed from a 1-knot in the 3-sphere and a pair of coprime integers uniquely. In this paper, we study, for each pair of coprime integers, if two different 1-knots yield the same branched twist spin, and prove that such a pair of 1-knots does not exist in most cases. Fundamental groups of 3-orbifolds of cyclic type are obtained as quotient groups of the fundamental groups of the complements of branched twist spins. We use these groups for distinguishing branched twist spins.

Abstract:We consider the equivariant K-theory of a real semisimple Lie group which acts on the (complex) flag variety of its complexification group. We construct an assemble map in the framework of KK-theory and then we prove that it is an isomorphism. The prove relies on a careful study of the orbits of the real group action on the flag variety and then piecing together different orbits. This result is a special case of the Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients.

Abstract:We study positive braid knots (the knots in the three-sphere realized as positive braid closures) through the lens of the L-space conjecture. This conjecture predicts that if $K$ is a non-trivial positive braid knot, then for all $r < 2g(K)-1$, the 3-manifold obtained via $r$-framed Dehn surgery along $K$ admits a taut foliation. Our main result provides some positive evidence towards this conjecture: we construct taut foliations in such manifolds whenever $r<g(K)+1$. As an application, we produce a novel braid positivity obstruction for cable knots by proving that the $(n,\pm 1)$-cable of a knot $K$ is braid positive if and only if $K$ is the unknot. We also present some curious examples demonstrating the limitations of our construction; these examples can also be viewed as providing some negative evidence towards the L-space conjecture. Finally, we apply our main result to produce taut foliations in some splicings of knot exteriors.

On the genera of symmetric unions of knots

Abstract:In the study of ribbon knots, Lamm introduced symmetric unions inspired by earlier work of Kinoshita and Terasaka. We show an identity between the twisted Alexander polynomials of a symmetric union and its partial knot. As a corollary, we obtain an inequality concerning their genera. It is known that there exists an epimorphism between their knot groups, and thus our inequality provides a positive answer to an old problem of Jonathan Simon in this case. Our formula also offers a useful condition to constrain possible symmetric union presentations of a given ribbon knot. It is an open question whether every ribbon knot is a symmetric union.

Abstract:The ribbon number of a knot is the minimum number of ribbon singularities among all ribbon disks bounded by that knot. In this paper, we build on the systematic treatment of this knot invariant initiated in recent work of Friedl, Misev, and Zupan. We show that the set of Alexander polynomials of knots with ribbon number at most four contains 56 polynomials, and we use this set to compute the ribbon numbers for many 12-crossing knots. We also study higher-genus ribbon numbers of knots, presenting some examples that exhibit interesting behavior and establishing that the success of the Alexander polynomial at controlling genus-0 ribbon numbers does not extend to higher genera.

Abstract:We present a topological interpretation of knot and braid contact homology in degree zero, in terms of cords and skein relations. This interpretation allows us to extend the knot invariant to embedded graphs and higher-dimensional knots. We calculate the knot invariant for two-bridge knots and relate it to double branched covers for general knots. In the appendix we show that the cord ring is determined by the fundamental group and peripheral structure of a knot and give applications.

Abstract:Given a spin rational homology sphere $Y$ equipped with a $\mathbb{Z}/m$-action preserving the spin structure, we use the Seiberg--Witten equations to define equivariant refinements of the invariant $\kappa(Y)$ from \cite{Man14}, which take the form of a finite subset of elements in a lattice constructed from the representation ring of a twisted product of $\text{Pin}(2)$ and $\mathbb{Z}/m$. The main theorems consist of equivariant relative 10/8-ths type inequalities for spin equivariant cobordisms between rational homology spheres. We provide applications to knot concordance, give obstructions to extending cyclic group actions to spin fillings, and via taking branched covers we obtain genus bounds for knots in punctured 4-manifolds. In some cases, these bounds are strong enough to determine the relative genus for a large class of knots within certain homology classes in $\mathbb{C} P^{2}\#\mathbb{C} P^{2}$, $S^{2}\times S^{2}\# S^{2}\times S^{2}$, $\mathbb{C} P^{2}\# S^{2}\times S^{2}$, and homotopy $K3$ surfaces.

Abstract:On (4n + 1)-dimensional (noncompact) manifolds admitting proper cocompact Lie group actions, we explore the analytic and topological sides of Kervaire semi-characteristics. The analytic side puts together two interpretations, one via assembly maps, and the other via dimensions of kernels. The topological side is ensured by the proper cocompact version of the Hodge theorem. The two sides coincide and admit an Atiyah type vanishing theorem.

Abstract:We conjecture that any perverse sheaf on a compact aspherical Kähler manifold has non-negative Euler characteristic. This extends the Singer-Hopf conjecture in the Kähler setting. We verify the stronger conjecture when the manifold X has non-positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. We also show that the conjecture holds when X is projective and in possession of a faithful semi-simple rigid local system. The first result is proved by expressing the Euler characteristic as an intersection number involving the characteristic cycle, and then using the curvature conditions to deduce non-negativity. For the second result, we have that the local system underlies a complex variation of Hodge structure. We then deduce the desired inequality from the curvature properties of the image of the period map.
