Abstract:This letter proposes a pilot-aided joint time synchronization and channel estimation (JTSCE) algorithm for orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) systems. Unlike existing algorithms, JTSCE employs a maximum length sequence (MLS) rather than an isolated signal as the pilot. Distinctively, JTSCE explores MLS's autocorrelation properties to estimate timing offset and channel delay taps. After obtaining delay taps, closed-form expressions of Doppler and channel gain for each propagation path are derived. Simulation results indicate that, compared to its counterpart, JTSCE achieves better bit error rate performance, close to that with perfect time synchronization and channel state information.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to achieve joint time synchronization and channel estimation (JTSCE) in the Orthogonal Time - Frequency Space (OTFS) system. Specifically, the paper proposes a method based on the maximum - length sequence (MLS) as a pilot signal to overcome the limitations of existing algorithms in time synchronization and channel estimation. These limitations include: 1. **Time Synchronization Problems**: - Existing methods require an additional time - dimension timing offset (TO) estimation step during time synchronization, which may lead to estimation errors. - When the first path of the channel is not the strongest path, existing time - synchronization methods may fail. 2. **Channel Estimation Problems**: - Existing methods have accuracy problems when estimating the Doppler shift, especially in the fractional Doppler case. - The accuracy of channel estimation is limited by the autocorrelation performance of the pilot signal. To solve these problems, the paper makes the following main contributions: 1. **Using MLS as a Pilot Signal**: - Time synchronization is achieved by correlating the received signal with the local MLS in the delay - time (DT) domain, without the need for an additional time - dimension TO estimation. - MLS has good autocorrelation characteristics and can improve the accuracy of time synchronization, even when the first path of the channel is not the strongest path. 2. **Channel Estimation**: - Using the same MLS pilot signal, channel estimation is achieved, and closed - form solutions for channel gain and fractional Doppler are derived based on the correlation results obtained during the time - synchronization process. - An off - grid estimation scheme is proposed, which improves the estimation accuracy in the fractional Doppler case. 3. **Simulation Verification**: - Through extensive simulation experiments, the high synchronization accuracy of the proposed algorithm in doubly - selective channels is verified. - Simulation results show that, compared with the benchmark algorithm, the proposed algorithm achieves better bit - error - rate (BER) performance at the same embedded pilot - signal power level, approaching the situation of perfect time synchronization and channel - state information (CSI). In summary, this paper aims to improve the performance of the OTFS system in high - mobility communication scenarios by proposing a joint time - synchronization and channel - estimation algorithm based on MLS.
