Abstract:Traditional superimposed single pilot (SSIP) and superimposed sparse pilot (SSPP) schemes require high-power pilot symbols for channel estimation, leading to a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). To tackle this problem, we develop a new hybrid superimposed pilots (HSP) structure for orthogonal time frequency space modulation (OTFS) systems, which consist of a high-power center pilot and low-power edge pilots. Based on the HSP structure, a two-stage iterative channel estimation (TSICE) algorithm is developed. In the first stage, the center pilot is exploited to estimate the delay/Doppler taps in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain. In the second stage, the multi-path channel gains and transmitted data are calculated according to the estimated taps. The two stages are iteratively applied to refine the channel estimation. The proposed TSICE algorithm does not require a pre-set threshold, and outperforms other pilot deployment schemes in bit error ratio (BER) and PAPR performance. Simulation results give some illustrative examples.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation was shown to provide significant error performance advantages over orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in delay--Doppler channels. In order to detect OTFS modulated data, the channel impulse response needs to be known at the receiver. In this paper, we propose embedded pilot-aided channel estimation schemes for OTFS. In each OTFS frame, we arrange pilot, guard, and data symbols in the delay--Doppler plane to suitably avoid interference between pilot and data symbols at the receiver. We develop such symbol arrangements for OTFS over multipath channels with integer and fractional Doppler shifts, respectively. At the receiver, channel estimation is performed based on a threshold method and the estimated channel information is used for data detection via a message passing (MP) algorithm. Thanks to our specific embedded symbol arrangements, both channel estimation and data detection are performed within the same OTFS frame with a minimum overhead. We compare by simulations the error performance of OTFS using the proposed channel estimation and OTFS with ideally known channel information and observe only a marginal performance loss. We also demonstrate that the proposed channel estimation in OTFS significantly outperforms OFDM with known channel information. Finally, we present extensions of the proposed schemes to MIMO and multi-user uplink/downlink.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has been proven to be superior to traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in high-speed communication scenarios. However, the existing channel estimation schemes may results in poor peak to average power ratio (PAPR) performance of OTFS system or low spectrum efficiency. Hence, in this paper, we propose a low PAPR channel estimation scheme with high spectrum efficiency. Specifically, we design a multiple scattered pilot pattern, where multiple low power pilot symbols are superimposed with data symbols in delay-Doppler domain. Furthermore, we propose the placement rules for pilot symbols, which can guarantee the low PAPR. Moreover, the data aided iterative channel estimation was invoked, where joint channel estimation is proposed by exploiting multiple independent received signals instead of only one received signal in the existing scheme, which can mitigate the interference imposed by data symbols for channel estimation. Simulation results shows that the proposed multiple scattered pilot aided channel estimation scheme can significantly reduce the PAPR while keeping the high spectrum efficiency.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) technique is a two-dimensional modulation method that multiplexes information symbols in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain. OTFS combats high Doppler shift existing in high speed wireless communication. However, conventional channel estimation in OTFS suffers from high pilot overhead because guard symbols occupy a significant part of the DD domain grids. In this paper, a superimposed channel estimation is proposed which can completely estimate channel parameters without considering pilot overhead and performance degradation. As the channel state information (CSI) in the DD domain is sparse, a sparse recovery algorithm orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) is used. Simulation results show our proposed method does not suffer from high peak to average power ratio (PAPR). Also, its performance is similar or close to other superimposed methods. To detect information symbols, a message passing (MP) detector, which exploits the sparsity of DD channel representation, is employed.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has been regarded as one of the most promising candidates to enhance communication reliability for emerging high-mobility applications, where channel estimation is a crucial component to exploit the performance superiority. Unfortunately, most prior estimators fail to work under extremely high mobility since the Doppler squint effect is ignored. Additionally, traditional schemes suffer from high pilot overhead due to the extensive guard symbols required to prevent interference between data and pilot symbols in the delay-Doppler domain. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel pilot pattern in the time-frequency domain, significantly improving the transmission efficiency. A multiple signal classification-based estimator is then developed to extract channel parameters. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed estimator.

Abstract:This work proposes a superimposed pilot (SP)-based channel estimation and data detection framework for orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) scheme, wherein low-powered pilots are superimposed on to data symbols in the delay-Doppler domain. We propose two channel estimation and data detection designs for SP-OTFS systems which, unlike the existing OTFS designs, do not designate any slots for pilots, which improves their spectral efficiency (SE). The first SP design estimates channel by treating data as interference, which degrades its performance at high signal to noise ratio. The second SP design alleviates this problem by iterating between channel estimation and data detection. Both these designs detect data using message passing algorithm which exploits OTFS channel sparsity, and consequently has low computational complexity. We also derive a lower bound on the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio of the proposed designs, and maximize it by optimally allocating power between data and pilot symbols. We numerically validate the derived analytical results, and show that the proposed designs have superior SE than the two state-of-the-art OTFS channel estimation and data detection designs.

Abstract:Receivers with joint channel estimation and signal detection using superimposed pilots (SP) can achieve high transmission efficiency in orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) systems. However, existing receivers have high computational complexity, hindering their practical applications. In this work, with SP in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain and the generalized complex exponential (GCE) basis expansion modeling (BEM) for channels, a message passing-based SP-DD iterative receiver is proposed, which drastically reduces the computational complexity while with marginal performance loss, compared to existing ones. To facilitate channel estimation (CE) in the proposed receiver, we design pilot signal to achieve pilot power concentration in the frequency domain, thereby developing an SP-DD-D receiver that can effectively reduce the power of the pilot signal and almost no loss of CE accuracy. Extensive simulation results are provided to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed SP-DD-D receiver.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) has shown to be a promising modulation technology that achieves the robust wireless transmission in high-mobility environments. The high mobility incurred Doppler effect in OTFS system, is represented as a continuous and relatively large band in the Doppler frequency. It yields the equivalent channel responses (ECRs) in the system change significantly within one symbol block, posing a challenge to channel estimation (CE) or tracking. In order to tackle this issue, in this paper, a set of transform-domain basis functions is designed to span a low-dimensional subspace for modeling the OTFS channel. Then, the CE can be performed by estimating a few projection coefficients of ECRs in the developed subspace, with training pilots. According to the individual transmission characteristic of OTFS signal, we propose a corner-inserted pilot pattern, which targets the low pilot overhead and satisfactory CE performance. Moreover, an OTFS signal detector, leveraging the time-domain channel equalization, linear-complexity interference cancellation and delay-Doppler domain maximal ratio combining detection, is developed to retrieve the transmitted data symbols. The simulations show the precisely estimated ECRs enable the detector to ideally demodulate 256-ary quadrature amplitude modulation signaling, under a velocity of 550 km/h at 5.9 GHz carrier frequency.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is a delay-Doppler (DD) domain modulation scheme that can adapt to the fast time-varying channels. Since OTFS is a two-dimensional modulation scheme in DD domain, effective channel in DD domain can be represented by a few delay and Doppler parameters. Due to the sparsity of effective channel in DD domain, we model the output signal matrix as the product of pilot symbol matrix and sparse channel vector and introduce the Doppler gird segmentation factor to subdivide the Doppler taps, which solves the issue of fractional Doppler. Then, we model the channel estimation problem as a sparse signal recovery problem, and propose a channel estimation method based on an efficient sparse Bayesian learning (ESBL) in this paper. Specifically, we design a pilot pattern with no guard interval, and the pilot power is equal to the symbol power, and then use a low-complexity sparse Bayesian learning based on Gaussian-scale mixtures to directly estimate the effective channel. Compared to traditional channel estimation based on sparse Bayesian learning (SBL), our proposed ESBL-based algorithm has superior normalized mean squared error (NMSE) and bit error rate (BER) performance.

Improving Channel Estimation Performance for Uplink OTFS Transmissions: Pilot Design based on A Posteriori Cramer-Rao Bound

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) has been widely acknowledged as a promising wireless technology for challenging transmission scenarios, including high-mobility channels. In this paper, we investigate the pilot design for the multi-user OTFS system based on the a priori statistical channel state information (CSI), where the practical threshold-based estimation scheme is adopted. Specifically, we first derive the a posteriori Cramer-Rao bound (PCRB) based on a priori channel information for each user. According to our derivation, the PCRB only relates to the user's pilot signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the range of delay and Doppler shifts under the practical power-delay and power-Doppler profiles. Then, a pilot scheme is proposed to minimize the average PCRB of different users, where a closed-form global optimal pilot power allocation is derived. Our numerical results verify the multi-user PCRB analysis. Also, we demonstrate an around 3 dB improvement in the average normalized-mean-square error (NMSE) by using the proposed pilot design in comparison to the conventional embedded pilot design under the same total pilot power.

Reduced Overhead Channel Estimation for OTFS With Split Pilot

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space modulation (OTFS) is currently one of the most robust modulation techniques for high Doppler channels. However, to reap the benefits of OTFS, an accurate channel estimation is crucial. To this mean, the widely used embedded pilot structures use twice the channel length size as a delay guard to avoid interference between the pilot and data symbols. Hence, incurring a large spectral efficiency loss, especially in wideband systems where the channel length is large. To reduce the pilot overhead, we propose a novel split pilot structure with two impulse pilots. With two pilots, we can use one to cancel the other, thus, capable of removing the pilot interference over data. To remove the data interference from the pilot, we also propose an iterative joint channel estimation and detection technique tailored to the proposed split pilot structure. With the interference caused by the delay spread solved, we reduce the number of delay guards in our system by half, significantly improving the spectral efficiency. To corroborate our claims, we numerically demonstrate that our proposed method can achieve performance levels comparable to that of the full-guard method while using only half the delay guard. Additionally, we show that our proposed iterative channel estimating technique has a fast convergence speed, requiring only two iterations.

Abstract:Orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) is a promising technique for high mobility wireless communications, as it approaches a sparse representation of doubly-selective fading channel and can obtain delay-Doppler (DD) diversity gain. However, in practical OTFS systems, fractional channel parameter is a great challenge and will seriously deteriorates the sparsity and the performance of channel estimation. In this paper, we propose a novel channel estimation scheme for doubly selective channel in the presence of both fractional Doppler and fractional delay. First, we analyze the input-output relationship of single-input single-output (SISO) OTFS system based on the integer sampling DD grid, then extend it to the fractional DD grid. Compared with the integer DD domain, the model in the fractional DD domain is sparser and more accurate. Based on our analysis, two kinds of off-grid models, i.e., doubly fractional model and mixed one- and two-dimensional (1&2D) fractional models are proposed and compared. The mixed 1&2D fractional model has an advantage of low complexity, but encounters a tandem off-grid distortion. To tackle this distortion problem, as well as to balance the accuracy and the computational workload, a novel two dimensional off-grid decomposition and combination scheme is proposed based on the doubly and mixed 1&2D fractional model. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed channel estimation schemes, compared with the existing work for OTFS systems under doubly selective channels.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has superior performance than traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in fast time-varying scenarios. However, due to the effect of Doppler shift, higher pilot overhead and pilot power are required to estimate the channel state information. According to the sparseness of the channel in the delay-Doppler domain, this letter proposes a new pilot pattern and a sparse Bayesian learning (SBL)-based channel estimation algorithm. There is no guard pilot in the pilot pattern, and the pilot has the same power as the data. Based on the new pilot pattern, we first convert the channel estimation problem to a sparse signal recovery problem. Then, we introduce a sparse Bayesian learning framework and construct a sparse signal prior model as a hierarchical Laplace prior. Finally, the expected maximum (EM) algorithm is used to update the parameters in the prior model. Numerical simulation highlights the superiority of the proposed algorithm in terms of pilot overhead, pilot power consumption, and anti-noise interference.

Abstract:For applications of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) in time-variant channels,a simple but efficient method for channel estimation is proposed.In this method,the data are assumed to be transmitted in packets while the pilot sequences and data sequences are combined by superimposing.After getting the channel impulse responses corresponding to each frame of OFDM signals in a packet,they are weightedly averaged over the packet.In such a way the accuracy of channel estimation is improved.This method can be applied to the time variant wireless channels without occupying any spectrum resources.Computer simulation results are also given to show the efficiency of the present method.
Towards Research Collaboration - a Taxonomy of Social Research Network Sites

Abstract:The increase of scientific collaboration coincides with the technological and social advancement of social software applications which can change the way we research. Among social software, social network sites have recently gained immense popularity in a hedonic context. This paper focuses on social network sites as an emerging application designed for the specific needs of researchers. To give an overview about these sites we use a data set of 24 case studies and in-depth interviews with the founders of ten social research network sites. The gathered data leads to a first tentative taxonomy and to a definition of SRNS identifying four basic functionalities identity and network management, communication, information management, and collaboration. The sites in the sample correspond to one of the following four types: research directory sites, research awareness sites, research management sites and research collaboration sites. These results conclude with implications for providers of social research network sites.

Abstract:This paper considers the time and frequency synchronization based on the interspersed pilots. The shortcoming of an existing algorithm is observed, and a new channel estimation assisted time and frequency algorithm is proposed. Since the channel estimation is always needed by the data transmission, our newly proposed algorithm can improve the synchronization performance without too much increase in the complexity. The simulations prove the effectiveness of the newly proposed algorithm.

Abstract:The orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) has emerged as a promising modulation waveform for high-mobility wireless communications owing to its robust advantages of resisting Doppler effects. However, due to the limit of the frame duration, the fractional Doppler shift appears, which is a challenge for channel estimation in OTFS systems. In this letter, we formulate the channel estimation problem as a block sparse signal recovery issue and propose an adaptive pattern-coupled sparse Bayesian learning (APCSBL) method. To be specific, we introduce a pattern-coupled hierarchical Gaussian prior model to characterize the dependencies among adjacent channel coefficients. On this basis, an adaptive hyperparameter strategy is presented, in which we appropriately utilize various coupling parameters further to characterize the strength of the correlation between adjacent elements. Then we exploit the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm to update the hidden variables and the channel vector. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing methods and works for various environments.

Abstract:Future communication systems must support high-speed mobile scenarios, while the mainstream Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technology faces severe inter-carrier interference in such environments. Therefore, the adoption of Orthogonal Time–Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation in 6G systems is an effective solution. The widely used single-pilot channel estimation in OTFS systems is susceptible to path loss and inaccurate fading coefficient estimation, leading to reduced estimation accuracy, signal distortion, and degraded overall system communication quality. To address this problem, this paper proposes a Constant-Amplitude Zero-Autocorrelation (CAZAC) sequence-based multi-pilot OTFS channel estimation scheme. The proposed method inserts multiple low-power pilots in the delayed Doppler domain (DD) and employs joint signal processing at the receiver to effectively suppress noise, thereby significantly improving the accuracy and reliability of channel estimation. Additionally, this paper analyzes the impact of CAZAC sequence length on estimation performance and provides reasonable parameter selection recommendations. In summary, this work proposes an innovative solution to the channel estimation challenge in OTFS systems, laying a solid theoretical foundation for the realization of future high-speed mobile communication technologies such as 6G, with important academic value and application prospects.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency and space (OTFS) modulation is a promising technology that satisfies high Doppler requirements for future mobile systems. OTFS modulation encodes information symbols and pilot symbols into the two-dimensional (2D) delay-Doppler (DD) domain. The received symbols suffer from inter-Doppler interference (IDI) in the fading channels with fractional Doppler shifts that are sampled at noninteger indices in the DD domain. IDI has been treated as an unavoidable effect because the fractional Doppler shifts cannot be obtained directly from the received pilot symbols. In this paper, we provide a solution to channel estimation for fractional Doppler channels. The proposed estimation provides new insight into the OTFS input-output relation in the DD domain as a 2D circular convolution with a small approximation. According to the input-output relation, we also provide a low-complexity channel equalization method using the estimated channel information. We demonstrate the error performance of the proposed channel estimation and equalization in several channels by simulations. The simulation results show that in high-mobility environments, the total system utilizing the proposed methods outperforms orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with ideal channel estimation and a conventional channel estimation method using a pseudo sequence.

Abstract:The recent proposed affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) employing a multi-chirp waveform has shown its reliability and robustness in doubly selective fading channels. In the existing embedded pilot-aided channel estimation methods, the presence of guard symbols in the discrete affine Fourier transform (DAFT) domain causes inevitable degradation of the spectral efficiency (SE). To improve the SE, we propose a novel AFDM channel estimation scheme by introducing the superimposed pilots in the DAFT domain. An effective pilot placement method that minimizes the channel estimation error is also developed with a rigorous proof. To mitigate the pilot-data interference, we further propose an iterative channel estimator and signal detector. Simulation results demonstrate that both channel estimation and data detection performances can be improved by the proposed scheme as the number of superimposed pilots increases.
