Abstract:We prove that every [Formula: see text]H-thin link has no [Formula: see text]-torsion for [Formula: see text] in its Khovanov homology. Together with previous results by Lee [The support of the Khovanov’s invariants for alternating knots, preprint (2002), arXiv:math.GT/0201105; An endomorphism of the Khovanov invariant, Adv. Math. 197(2) (2005) 554–586, arXiv:math.GT/0210213] and the author [Torsion of Khovanov homology, Fund. Math. 225 (2014) 343–364, arXiv:math.GT/0405474], this implies that integer Khovanov homology of non-split alternating links is completely determined by the Jones polynomial and signature. Our proof is based on establishing an algebraic relation between Bockstein and Turner differentials on Khovanov homology over [Formula: see text]. We conjecture that a similar relation exists between the corresponding spectral sequences.

Abstract:In this note, we show that if there is a knot in $S^3$ having $\mathbb{Z}_m$ torsion in its Khovanov homology, then there are infinitely many hyperbolic knots and infinitely many prime satellite knots having $\mathbb{Z}_m$ torsion in their Khovanov homology. As an application, we give the first known examples of hyperbolic knots and links with odd (and other non-$\mathbb{Z}_2$ torsion) in their Khovanov homology.

Abstract:In the Khovanov homology of links, presence of -torsion is a very common phenomenon. Finite number of examples of knots with -torsion for n > 2 were also known, none for n > 8. In this article, we present several infinite families of links whose Khovanov homology contains -torsion for 2 < n < 9 and -torsion for s < 24. We introduce 4-braid links with -torsion which are counterexamples to parts of the PS braid conjecture. We also provide an infinite family of knots with -torsion in reduced Khovanov homology and -torsion in odd Khovanov homology.

Abstract:The standard methods for calculating Khovanov homology rely either on long exact/spectral sequences or on the algorithmic "divide and conquer" approach developed by Bar-Natan. In this paper, we employ an alternative and arguably simpler tool, discrete Morse theory, which is new in the context of knot homologies. The method is applied for 2- and 3-torus braids in Bar-Natan's dotted cobordism category, where Khovanov complexes of tangles live. This grants a recursive description of the complexes of 2- and 3-torus braids yielding an inductive result on integral Khovanov homology of links containing those braids. The result, accompanied with some computer data, advances the recent progress on a conjecture by Przytycki and Sazdanović which claims that closures of 3-braids only have 2-torsion in their Khovanov homology.

Abstract:We show that the order of torsion homology classes in Bar-Natan deformation of Khovanov homology is a lower bound for the unknotting number. We give examples of knots that this is a better lower bound than |s(K)/2|, where s(K) is the Rasmussen s invariant defined by the Bar-Natan spectral sequence.

This adapts an idea of Silver and Williams from knot theory to OT-manifolds and extends it to higher degree homology <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://groups.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> the case of surfaces, i.e. Inoue surfaces of type $S^{0}$, the torsion grows exponentially in both $H_1$ and $H_2$ according to a parameters which already plays a role in Inoue's classical paper. This motivates running example calculations in all homological degrees.

Abstract:The Turaev surface of a link diagram D is a closed, oriented surface constructed from a cobordism between the all-A and all-B Kauffman states of D. The Turaev genus of a link L is the minimum genus of the Turaev surface of any diagram D of L. A link is alternating if and only if its Turaev genus is zero, and so one can view Turaev genus one links as being close to alternating links. In this paper, we study the Khovanov homology of a Turaev genus one link in the first and last two polynomial gradings where the homology is nontrivial. We show that a particular summand in the Khovanov homology of a Turaev genus one link is trivial. This trivial summand leads to a computation of the Rasmussen s invariant and to bounds on the smooth four genus for certain Turaev genus one knots.

Abstract:We further study the symplectic Khovanov homology of Seidel and Smith and its generalization to even tangles. This homology theory is a conjectural geometric model for Khovanov homology. In this paper we uncover structures on symplectic Khovanov homology which have analogues in Khovanov homology. To each elementary (as well as minimal) cobordism between two tangles we associate a homomorphism between the symplectic Khovanov homology groups of the two tangles. We define the symplectic analogues $H_{s}^m$ of Khovanov's arc algebras and equip the symplectic Khovanov homology of an $(m,n)$-tangle with the structure of an $(H_{s}^m,H_{s}^n)$-bimodule. We show that $H_{s}^m$ and Khovanov's $H^m$ are isomorphic as associative algebras over $\Z/2$. We also obtain a skein exact triangle for symplectic Khovanov homology which resembles the one for Khovanov homology.

Abstract:We define a new family of commuting operators $F_k$ in Khovanov-Rozansky link homology, similar to the action of tautological classes in cohomology of character varieties. We prove that $F_2$ satisfies ``hard Lefshetz property" and hence exhibits the symmetry in Khovanov-Rozansky homology conjectured by Dunfield, Gukov and Rasmussen.

Abstract:We introduce a method for producing congruences between Hecke eigenclasses, possibly torsion, in the coherent cohomology of automorphic vector bundles on certain good reduction Shimura varieties. The congruences are produced using some "generalized Hasse invariants" adapted to the Ekedahl-Oort stratification of the special fiber.

Abstract:Khovanov homology is a powerful link invariant: a categorification of the Jones polynomial that enjoys a rich and beautiful algebraic structure. This homology theory has been extensively studied and it has become an ubiquitous topic in contemporary knot theory research. In the same spirit, the Kauffman skein relation, which allows to define the Kauffman bracket polynomial up to normalization of the unknot, can be categorified by means of a long exact sequence. In an expository style, in this article we present how to build Khovanov homology from the Kauffman bracket polynomial and construct its long exact sequence. Furthermore, we present a deviceful and practical way in which this long exact sequence can be used for the computation of the Khovanov homology of torus links of the type $T(2,n)$. This article serves as a partial translation of a Spanish paper to be published on occasion of the Encuentro Internacional de Matemáticas (International Meeting of Mathematics) to be celebrated at the Universidad del Atlántico in Barranquilla, Colombia in November 2023. This paper offers a first look into the world of Khovanov homology by constructing it from the Kauffman bracket polynomial, as it was first done by Oleg Viro. Moreover, it gives the reader references for further studies from leading experts such as D. Bar-Natan, M. Khovanov, S. Mukherjee, J. Przytycki, and A. Shumakovitch, among others. In particular, one of the main objectives in publishing this article (and this partial translation) is to popularize research in knot theory, more specifically on Khovanov homology in Colombia, and Latin-America in general, acting as a language bridge given that most of the literature is in English.

Abstract:Khovanov homology of a link and chromatic graph homology are known to be isomorphic in a range of homological gradings that depend on the girth of a graph. We discuss patterns shared by these two homology theories. In particular, we improve the bounds for the homological span of chromatic homology by Helme-Guizon, Przytycki and Rong. An explicit formula for the rank of the third chromatic homology group on the main diagonal is given and used to compute the corresponding Khovanov homology group and the fourth coefficient of the Jones polynomial for links with certain diagrams.

Torsion invariants of complexes of groups

Abstract:Suppose a residually finite group $G$ acts cocompactly on a contractible complex with strict fundamental domain $Q$, where the stabilizers are either trivial or have normal $\mathbb{Z}$-subgroups. Let $\partial Q$ be the subcomplex of $Q$ with nontrivial stabilizers. Our main result is a computation of the homology torsion growth of a chain of finite index normal subgroups of $G$. We show that independent of the chain, the normalized torsion limits to the torsion of $\partial Q$, shifted a degree. Under milder assumptions of acyclicity of nontrivial stabilizers, we show similar formulas for the mod p-homology growth. We also obtain formulas for the universal and the usual $L^2$-torsion of $G$ in terms of the torsion of stabilizers and topology of $\partial Q$. In particular, we get complete answers for right-angled Artin groups, which shows they satisfy a torsion analogue of the Lück approximation theorem.

Abstract:A conjecture of Shumakovitch states that every nontrivial knot has 2-torsion in its Khovanov homology. We show that if a knot $K$ has no 2-torsion in its Khovanov homology, then the rank of its reduced Khovanov homology is minimal among all knots obtainable from $K$ by a proper rational tangle replacement. It follows, for example, that unknotting number 1 knots have 2-torsion in their Khovanov homology.

Abstract:We provide new evidence that the tangle calculus and "evolution" are applicable to the Khovanov polynomials for families of long braids inside the knot diagram. We show that jumps in evolution, peculiar for superpolynomials, are much less abundant than it was originally expected. Namely, for torus and twist satellites of a fixed companion knot, the main (most complicated) contribution does not jump, all jumps are concentrated in the torus and twist part correspondingly, where these jumps are necessary to make the Khovanov polynomial positive. Among other things, this opens a way to define a jump-free part of the colored Khovanov polynomials, which differs from the naive colored polynomial just "infinitesimally". The separation between jumping and smooth parts involves a combination of Rasmussen index and a new knot invariant, which we call "Thickness".

Abstract:We construct an algebra of non-trivial homological operations on Khovanov homology with coefficients in $\mathbb Z_2$ generated by two Bockstein operations. We use the unified Khovanov homology theory developed by the first author to lift this algebra to integral Khovanov homology. We conjecture that these two algebras are infinite and present evidence in support of our conjectures. Finally, we list examples of knots that have the same even and odd Khovanov homology, but different actions of these homological operations. This confirms that the unified theory is a finer knot invariant than the even and odd Khovanov homology combined. The case of reduced Khovanov homology is also considered.

Abstract:We show the $n$ colored Jones polynomials of a highly twisted link approach the Kauffman bracket of an $n$ colored skein element. This is in the sense that the corresponding categorifications of the colored Jones polynomials approach the categorification of the Kauffman bracket of the skein element in a direct limit, as the number of twisting of each twist region tends toward infinity, proving a quantum version of Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn surgery theorem implicit in Rozansky's work, and categorifying a result by Champanerkar-Kofman. In view of the volume conjecture, we compute the asymptotic growth rate of the Kauffman bracket of the limiting skein element at a root of unity and relate it to the volume of regular ideal octahedra that arise naturally from the evaluation of the colored Jones polynomials of the link.
