Abstract:We establish expansion properties for suitably generic polynomials of degree $d$ in $d+1$ variables over finite fields. In particular, we show that if $P\in\mathbb{F}_q[x_1,\ldots,x_{d+1}]$ is a polynomial of degree $d$ coming from an explicit, Zariski dense set, and $X_1,\ldots,X_{d+1}\subseteq\mathbb{F}_q$ are suitably large, then $|P(X_1,\ldots,X_{d+1})|=q-O(1)$. Our methods rely on a higher-degree extension of a result of Vinh on point--line incidences over a finite field.

Exploration on Incidence Geometry and Sum-Product Phenomena

Abstract:In additive combinatorics, Erdös-Szemerédi Conjecture is an important conjecture. It can be applied to many fields, such as number theory, harmonic analysis, incidence geometry, and so on. Additionally, its statement is quite easy to understand, while it is still an open problem. In this dissertation, we investigate the Erdös-Szemerédi Conjecture and its relationship with several well-known results in incidence geometry, such as the Szemerédi-Trotter Incidence Theorem. We first study these problems in the setting of real numbers and focus on the proofs by Elekes and Solymosi on sum-product estimates. After introducing these theorems, our main focus is the Erdös-Szemerédi Conjecture in the setting of $\mathbb{F}_p$. We aim to adapt several ingenious techniques developed for real numbers to the case of finite fields. Finally, we obtain a result in estimating the number of bisectors over the ring $\mathbb{Z}/p^3\mathbb{Z}$ with $p$ a $4n+3$ prime.

A point-variety incidence theorem over finite fields, and its applications

Abstract:Incidence problems between geometric objects is a key area of focus in the field of discrete geometry. Among them, the study of incidence problems over finite fields have received a considerable amount of attention in recent years. In this paper, by characterizing the singular values and singular vectors of the corresponding incidence matrix through group algebras, we prove a bound on the number of incidences between points and varieties of a certain form over finite fields. Our result leads to a new incidence bound for points and flats in finite geometries, which improves previous results for certain parameter regimes. As another application of our point-variety incidence bound, we prove a result on pinned distance problems by Phuong et al. and Cilleruelo et al. under a weaker condition.

Abstract:We prove some novel multi-parameter point-line incidence estimates in vector spaces over finite fields. While these could be seen as special cases of higher-dimensional incidence results, they outperform their more general counterparts in those contexts. We go on to present a number of applications to illustrate their use in combinatorial problems from geometry and number theory.

Abstract:In recent years, sum-product estimates in Euclidean space and finite fields have been studied using a variety of combinatorial, number theoretic and analytic methods. Erdos type problems involving the distribution of distances, areas and volumes have also received much attention. In this paper we prove a relatively straightforward function version of an incidence results for points and planes previously established in \cite{HI07} and \cite{HIKR07}. As a consequence of our methods, we obtain sharp or near sharp results on the distribution of volumes determined by subsets of vector spaces over finite fields and the associated arithmetic expressions. In particular, our machinery enables us to prove that if $E \subset {\Bbb F}_q^d$, $d \ge 4$, the $d$-dimensional vector space over a finite field ${\Bbb F}_q$, of size much greater than $q^{\frac{d}{2}}$, and if $E$ is a product set, then the set of volumes of $d$-dimensional parallelepipeds determined by $E$ covers ${\Bbb F}_q$. This result is sharp as can be seen by taking $E$ to equal to $A \times A \times ... \times A$, where $A$ is a sub-field of ${\Bbb F}_q$ of size $\sqrt{q}$. In three dimensions we establish the same result if $|E| \gtrsim q^{15/8}$. We prove in three dimensions that the set of volumes covers a positive proportion of ${\Bbb F}_q$ if $|E| \ge Cq^{3/2}$. Finally we show that in three dimensions the set of volumes covers a positive proportion of ${\Bbb F}_q$ if $|E| \ge Cq^2$, without any further assumptions on $E$, which is again sharp as taking $E$ to be a 2-plane through the origin shows.

Abstract:We study tiling and spectral sets in vector spaces over prime fields. The classical Fuglede conjecture in locally compact abelian groups says that a set is spectral if and only if it tiles by translation. This conjecture was disproved by T. Tao in Euclidean spaces of dimensions 5 and higher, using constructions over prime fields (in vector spaces over finite fields of prime order) and lifting them to the Euclidean setting. Over prime fields, when the dimension of the vector space is less than or equal to $2$ it has recently been proven that the Fuglede conjecture holds (see \cite{IMP15}). In this paper we study this question in higher dimensions over prime fields and provide some results and counterexamples. In particular we prove the existence of spectral sets which do not tile in $\mathbb{Z}_p^5$ for all odd primes $p$ and $\mathbb{Z}_p^4$ for all odd primes $p$ such that $p \equiv 3 \text{ mod } 4$. Although counterexamples in low dimensional groups over cyclic rings $\mathbb{Z}_n$ were previously known they were usually for non prime $n$ or a small, sporadic set of primes $p$ rather than general constructions. This paper is a result of a Research Experience for Undergraduates program ran at the University of Rochester during the summer of 2015 by A. Iosevich, J. Pakianathan and G. Petridis.

Local character expansions and asymptotic cones over finite fields

Abstract:We generalise Gelfand-Graev characters to $\mathbb R/\mathbb Z$-graded Lie algebras and lift them to produce new test functions to probe the local character expansion in positive depth. We show that these test functions are well adapted to compute the leading terms of the local character expansion and relate their determination to the asymptotic cone of elements in $\mathbb Z/n$-graded Lie algebras. As an illustration, we compute the geometric wave front set of certain toral supercuspidal representations in a straightforward manner.

Abstract:In the present paper, we develop geometric analysis techniques on Cayley graphs of finitely generated abelian groups to study the polynomial growth harmonic functions. We provide a geometric analysis proof of the classical Heilbronn theorem (Heilbronn in Proc Camb Philos Soc 45:194–206, 1949 ) and the recent Nayar theorem (Nayar in Bull Pol Acad Sci Math 57:231–242, 2009 ) on polynomial growth harmonic functions on lattices ℤ ^n that does not use a representation formula for harmonic functions. In the abelian group case, by Yau’s gradient estimate, we actually give a simplified proof of a general polynomial growth harmonic function theorem of (Alexopoulos in Ann Probab 30:723–801, 2002 ). We calculate the precise dimension of the space of polynomial growth harmonic functions on finitely generated abelian groups by linear algebra, rather than by Floquet theory Kuchment and Pinchover (Trans Am Math Soc 359:5777–5815, 2007 ). While the Cayley graph not only depends on the abelian group, but also on the choice of a generating set, we find that this dimension depends only on the group itself. Moreover, we also calculate the dimension of solutions to higher order Laplace operators.

Abstract:We show that various classical theorems of real/complex linear incidence geometry, such as the theorems of Pappus, Desargues, Möbius, and so on, can be interpreted as special cases of a single "master theorem" that involves an arbitrary tiling of a closed oriented surface by quadrilateral tiles. This yields a general mechanism for producing new incidence theorems and generalizing the known ones.

By a result of Chernikov-Galvin-Starchenko, this yields Szemerédi-Trotter-like incidence bounds for function fields over finite fields. Abstract:Given a projetive surface $S$, using correspondences, we construct an infinite dimensional Lie algebra that acts on the direct sum $\Wfock$ of the cohomology groups of the incidence Hilbert schemes $S^{[n,n+1]}$ over all $n$. The algebra is related to an extension of an infinite dimensional Heisenberg algebra. The space $\Wfock$ is a highest weight representation of this algebra. Our result provides a representation-theoretic interpretation of Cheah's generating function of Betti numbers of the incidence Hilbert schemes. As a consequence, an additive basis of the cohomology group of the incidence Hilbert scheme is obtained.

Abstract:In 1901, von Koch showed that the Riemann Hypothesis is equivalent to the assertion that∑p⩽xpprime1=∫2xdtlogt+O(xlogx). We describe an analogue of von Koch's result for polynomials over a finite prime field Fp: For each natural number n, write n in base p, sayn=a0+a1p+⋯+akpk, and associate to n the polynomial a0+a1T+⋯+akTk∈Fp[T]. We let πp(X) denote the number of irreducible polynomials encoded by integers n<X, and prove a formula for πp(X) valid with an error term analogous to that in von Koch's theorem. Our result is unconditional, and is grounded in Weil's Riemann Hypothesis for function fields. We also investigate an asymptotic expansion for πp(X).

Abstract:The parametric geometry of numbers of Schmidt and Summerer deals with rational approximation to points in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We extend this theory to a number field $K$ and its completion $K_w$ at a place $w$ in order to treat approximation over $K$ to points in $K_w^n$. As a consequence, we find that exponents of approximation over $\mathbb{Q}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ have the same spectrum as their generalizations over $K$ in $K_w^n$. When $w$ has relative degree one over a place $\ell$ of $\mathbb{Q}$, we further relate approximation over $K$ to a point $\boldsymbol{\xi}$ in $K_w^n$, to approximation over $\mathbb{Q}$ to a point $\Xi$ in $\mathbb{Q}_\ell^{nd}$, obtained by extension of scalars, where $d$ is the degree of $K$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. By combination with a result of Bel, this allows us to construct algebraic curves in $\mathbb{R}^{3d}$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, of degree $2d$, containing points that are very singular with respect to rational approximation.

Abstract:Let F be a global function field with constant field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Let G be a reductive group over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We establish a variant of Arthur's truncated kernel for G and for its Lie algebra which generalizes Arthur's original construction. We establish a coarse geometric expansion for our variant truncation. As applications, we consider some existence and uniqueness problems of some cuspidal automorphic representations for the functions field of the projective line $\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ with two points of ramifications.

Spherical higher order Fourier analysis over finite fields II: additive combinatorics for shifted ideals

Abstract:This paper is the second part of the series "Spherical higher order Fourier analysis over finite fields", aiming to develop the higher order Fourier analysis method along spheres over finite fields, and to solve the geometric Ramsey conjecture in the finite field setting. In this paper, we study additive combinatorial properties for shifted modules, i.e. the structure of sets of the form $E\hat{+} E$, where $E$ is a collection of shifted modules of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{R}[x_{1},\dots,x_{d}]$ and we identify two modules if their difference contains the zero polynomial. We show that under appropriate definitions, the set $E\hat{+} E$ enjoys properties similar to the conventional setting where $E$ is a subset of an abelian group. In particular, among other results, we prove the Balog-Gowers-Szemerédi theorem, the Rusza's quasi triangle inequality and a weak form of the Plünnecke-Rusza theorem in the setting of shifted modules. We also show that for a special class of maps $\xi$ from $\mathbb{Z}_{K}^{d}$ to the collection of all shifted modules of $\mathbb{R}[x_{1},\dots,x_{d}]$, if the set $\xi(\mathbb{Z}_{K}^{d})+\xi(\mathbb{Z}_{K}^{d})$ has large additive energy, then $\xi$ is an almost linear Freiman homomorphism. This result is the crucial additive combinatorial input we need to prove the spherical Gowers inverse theorem in later parts of the series.

Abstract:Recent results of Freitas, Kraus, Şengün and Siksek, give sufficient criteria for the asymptotic Fermat's Last Theorem to hold over a specific number field. Those works in turn build on many deep theorems in arithmetic geometry. In this paper we combine the aforementioned results with techniques from class field theory, the theory of p-groups and p-extensions, Diophantine approximation and linear forms in logarithms, to establish the asymptotic Fermat's Last Theorem for many infinite families of number fields, and for thousands of number fields of small degree. For example, we prove the effective asymptotic Fermat's Last Theorem for the infinite family of fields <math>Q(ζ2r)+</math> where <math>r≥2</math>.

Abstract:We consider three isogeny invariants of abelian varieties over finite fields: the Galois group, Newton polygon, and the angle rank. Motivated by work of Dupuy, Kedlaya, and Zureick-Brown, we define a new invariant called the weighted permutation representation which encompasses all three of these invariants and use it to study the subtle relationships between them. We use this permutation representation to classify the triples of invariants that occur for abelian surfaces and simple abelian threefolds.

Abstract:We investigate exponential sums over singular binary quartic forms, proving an explicit formula for the finite field Fourier transform of this set. Our formula shares much in common with analogous formulas proved previously for other vector spaces, but also exhibits a striking new feature: the point counting function $a_p(E) = p + 1 - \#E(\mathbb{F}_p)$ associated to an associated elliptic curve makes a prominent appearance. The proof techniques are also new, involving techniques from elementary algebraic geometry and classical invariant theory. As an application to prime number theory, we demonstrate the existence of `many' 2-Selmer elements for elliptic curves with discriminants that are squarefree and have at most four prime factors.
