Abstract:We introduce a new approach for studying incidences with non-algebraic curves in the plane. This approach is based on the concepts of Pfaffian curves and Pfaffian functions, as defined by Khovanskii. We derive incidence bounds for curves that are defined with exponentials, logarithms, trigonometric functions, integration, and more. Our bound for incidences with Pfaffian curves matches a classical bound of Pach and Sharir for incidences with algebraic curves, up to polylogarithmic factors.

A point-variety incidence theorem over finite fields, and its applications

Abstract:Incidence problems between geometric objects is a key area of focus in the field of discrete geometry. Among them, the study of incidence problems over finite fields have received a considerable amount of attention in recent years. In this paper, by characterizing the singular values and singular vectors of the corresponding incidence matrix through group algebras, we prove a bound on the number of incidences between points and varieties of a certain form over finite fields. Our result leads to a new incidence bound for points and flats in finite geometries, which improves previous results for certain parameter regimes. As another application of our point-variety incidence bound, we prove a result on pinned distance problems by Phuong et al. and Cilleruelo et al. under a weaker condition.

Abstract:This paper contains an account of arbitrary cubic function fields of characteristic three. We define a standard form for an arbitrary cubic curve and consider its function field. By considering an integral basis for the maximal order of these function fields, we are able to calculate the field discriminant and the genus. We also describe the splitting behavior of any place, and give composition and reduction algorithms for arithmetic in the ideal class group.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce a class of invariants of cubic fields termed generalized discriminants. We then obtain asymptotics for the families of cubic fields ordered by these invariants. In addition, we determine which of these families satisfy the Malle--Bhargava heuristic.

Abstract:We study the probability for a random line to intersect a given plane curve, defined over a finite field, in a given number of points defined over the same field. In particular, we focus on the limits of these probabilities under successive finite field extensions. Supposing absolute irreducibility for the curve, we show how a variant of Chebotarev density theorem for function fields can be used to prove the existence of these limits, and to compute them under a mildly stronger condition, known as simple tangency. Partial results have already appeared in the literature, and we propose this work as an introduction to the use of Chebotarev theorem in the context of incidence geometry. Finally, Veronese maps allow us to compute similar probabilities of intersection between a given curve and random curves of given degree.

Abstract:We study the number of rational points of smooth projective curves over finite fields in some relative situations in the spirit of a previous paper from an euclidean point of vue. We prove some kinds of relative Weil bounds, derived from Schwarz inequality for some "relative parts" of the diagonal and of the graph of the Frobenius on some euclidean sub-spaces of the numerical space of the squared curve endowed with the opposite of the intersection product.

Abstract:In recent years, sum-product estimates in Euclidean space and finite fields have been studied using a variety of combinatorial, number theoretic and analytic methods. Erdos type problems involving the distribution of distances, areas and volumes have also received much attention. In this paper we prove a relatively straightforward function version of an incidence results for points and planes previously established in \cite{HI07} and \cite{HIKR07}. As a consequence of our methods, we obtain sharp or near sharp results on the distribution of volumes determined by subsets of vector spaces over finite fields and the associated arithmetic expressions. In particular, our machinery enables us to prove that if $E \subset {\Bbb F}_q^d$, $d \ge 4$, the $d$-dimensional vector space over a finite field ${\Bbb F}_q$, of size much greater than $q^{\frac{d}{2}}$, and if $E$ is a product set, then the set of volumes of $d$-dimensional parallelepipeds determined by $E$ covers ${\Bbb F}_q$. This result is sharp as can be seen by taking $E$ to equal to $A \times A \times ... \times A$, where $A$ is a sub-field of ${\Bbb F}_q$ of size $\sqrt{q}$. In three dimensions we establish the same result if $|E| \gtrsim q^{15/8}$. We prove in three dimensions that the set of volumes covers a positive proportion of ${\Bbb F}_q$ if $|E| \ge Cq^{3/2}$. Finally we show that in three dimensions the set of volumes covers a positive proportion of ${\Bbb F}_q$ if $|E| \ge Cq^2$, without any further assumptions on $E$, which is again sharp as taking $E$ to be a 2-plane through the origin shows.

Abstract:We study and explicitly construct some families of asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields. It turns out that these families have an asymptotical class number widely greater than the general Lachaud - Martin-Deschamps bounds. We emphasize that we obtain asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields over any finite field $\F_q$, in particular when $q$ is not a square and that these sequences are dense towers.

Abstract:It is a classical result that there are $12$ (irreducible) rational cubic curves through $8$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, but little is known about the non-generic cases. The space of $8$-point configurations is partitioned into strata depending on combinatorial objects we call quatroids, a higher-order version of representable matroids. We compute all $779777$ quatroids on eight distinct points in the plane, which produces a full description of the stratification. For each stratum, we generate several invariants, including the number of rational cubics through a generic configuration. As a byproduct of our investigation, we obtain a collection of results regarding the base loci of pencils of cubics and positive certificates for non-rationality.

A Cubic Transformation Formula for Appell-Lauricella Hypergeometric Functions over Finite Fields

Abstract:We define a finite-field version of Appell-Lauricella hypergeometric functions built from period functions in several variables, paralleling the development by Fuselier, et. al in the single variable case. We develop geometric connections between these functions and the family of generalized Picard curves. In our main result, we use finite-field Appell-Lauricella functions to establish a finite-field analogue of Koike and Shiga's cubic transformation for the Appell hypergeometric function $F_1$, proving a conjecture of Ling Long. We use our multivariable period functions to construct formulas for the number of $\mathbb{F}_p$-points on the generalized Picard curves. We also give some transformation and reduction formulas for the period functions, and consequently for the finite-field Appell-Lauricella functions.

Abstract:We develop a theory of Prym varieties and cubic threefolds over fields of characteristic $2$. As an application, we prove that smooth cubic threefolds are non-rational over an arbitrary field and solve a conjecture of Deligne regarding arithmetic Torelli maps. We also prove the Torelli theorem for cubic threefolds over arbitrary fields.

Abstract:Let k be an imaginary quadratic number field (with class number 1). We describe a new, essentially linear-time algorithm, to list all isomorphism classes of cubic extensions L/k up to a bound X on the norm of the relative discriminant ideal. The main tools are Taniguchi's generalization of Davenport-Heilbronn parametrisation of cubic extensions, and reduction theory for binary cubic forms over imaginary quadratic fields. Finally, we give numerical data for k=Q(i), and we compare our results with ray class field algorithm ones, and with asymptotic heuristics, based on a generalization of Roberts' conjecture.

Cyclic Cubic Points on Higher Genus Curves

Abstract:The distribution of degree $d$ points on curves is well understood, especially for low degrees. We refine this study to include information on the Galois group in the simplest interesting case: $d = 3$. For curves of genus at least 5, we show cubic points with Galois group $C_3$ arise from well-structured morphisms, along with providing computable tests for the existence of such morphisms. We prove the same for curves of lower genus under some geometric or arithmetic assumptions.

Abstract:We prove that a positive proportion of integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not so expressible, thus proving a conjecture of Davenport. More generally, we prove that a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family have rank 0, and a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves with good reduction at 2 in any cubic twist family have rank 1. Our method involves proving that the average size of the 2-Selmer group of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family, having any given root number, is 3. We accomplish this by generalizing a parametrization, due to the second author and Ho, of elliptic curves with extra structure by pairs of binary cubic forms. We then use a novel combination of geometry-of-numbers methods and the circle method that builds on earlier work of Ruth and the first author. In particular, we make use of a new interpretation of the singular integral and series arising in the circle method in terms of real and $p$-adic Haar measures on the relevant group. We prove a uniformity estimate for integral points on the relevant quadric, which along with a sieve allows us to prove that the average size of the 2-Selmer group over the cubic twist family is 3. By suitably partitioning the subset of curves in the family with given root number, we effect a further sieve to show that the root number is equidistributed and that the same average, now taken over only those curves of given root number, is again 3. Finally, we apply the $p$-parity theorem of Dokchitser-Dokchitser and a $p$-converse theorem of Burungale-Skinner to conclude. We also prove the analogue of the above results for the sequence of square numbers: namely, we prove that a positive proportion of square integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not.

Abstract:A plane curve C⊂P2 of degree d is called blocking if every Fq -line in the plane meets C at some Fq -point. We prove that the proportion of blocking curves among those of degree d is o(1) when d≥2q−1 and q→∞ . We also show that the same conclusion holds for smooth curves under the somewhat weaker condition d≥3p and d,q→∞ . Moreover, the two events in which a random plane curve is smooth and respectively blocking are shown to be asymptotically independent. Extending a classical result on the number of Fq -roots of random polynomials, we find that the limiting distribution of the number of Fq -points in the intersection of a random plane curve and a fixed Fq -line is Poisson with mean 1. We also present an explicit formula for the proportion of blocking curves involving statistics on the number of Fq -points contained in a union of k lines for k=1,2,...,q2+q+1 .
