Abstract:We consider a third-order non-self-adjoint operator, which is an $L$-operator in the Lax pair for the Boussinesq equation on the circle. We construct a mapping from the set of operator coefficients to the set of spectral data, similar to the corresponding mapping for the Hill operator constructed by E. Korotyaev. We prove that in a neighborhood of zero our mapping is analytic and one-to-one.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the inverse spectral problem of the L - operator of the Boussinesq equation on the circle. Specifically, the author considers a third - order non - self - adjoint operator \(H\), which is the L - operator in the Lax pair of the Boussinesq equation on the circle. The operator \(H\) has the form: \[ H y = y''' + (py)' + py' + qy \] where \(p\) and \(q\) are real periodic coefficients. The author's goal is to construct a mapping from the set of operator coefficients to the set of spectral data and prove that this mapping is analytic and one - to - one in a small neighborhood of zero. ### Main contributions 1. **Constructing the mapping**: The author constructs a mapping from the space \(H\) to the spectral data space and proves that this mapping is an analytic bijection from a small ball \(B_\epsilon\) to its image. 2. **Using existing methods**: The author combines Korotyaev's mapping method for the Hill operator and McKean's transformation method to transform the spectral problem of the third - order operator \(H\) into the spectral problem of the Hill operator. 3. **Inverse spectral problem**: Through the above mapping, the author solves the inverse spectral problem of the third - order operator \(H\), that is, given the spectral data, how to determine the coefficients of the operator. ### Key results - **Spectral data**: The author defines the spectral data, including the eigenvalues \(\mu_n\) of the 3 - point Dirichlet problem and the branch points \(r^\pm_n\) of the Riemann surface \(R\). - **McKean transformation**: Through the McKean transformation, the spectral data of the third - order operator \(H\) are transformed into the spectral data of the Hill operator. - **Locally analytic bijection**: It is proved that the mapping \(g: B_\epsilon \to h\) is a locally analytic bijection, where \(h=\ell^2_1 \oplus \ell^2_1\). ### Application significance - **Solution of the Boussinesq equation**: This result implies that the solution of the Boussinesq equation with sufficiently small initial data maintains its smoothness class during the time evolution. - **Existence of multi - band periodic solutions**: The corollary shows that the finite - band coefficient set is dense in \(B_\epsilon\), thus implying the existence of arbitrary \(N\)-band periodic solutions of the Boussinesq equation. ### References - [1] A.
