Abstract:We study inverse boundary problems for third-order nonlinear tensorial perturbations of biharmonic operators on a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, where $n\geq 3$. By imposing appropriate assumptions on the nonlinearity, we demonstrate that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, known on the boundary of the domain, uniquely determines the genuinely nonlinear tensorial third-order perturbations of the biharmonic operator. The proof relies on the inversion of certain generalized momentum ray transforms on symmetric tensor fields. Notably, the corresponding inverse boundary problem for linear tensorial third-order perturbations of the biharmonic operator remains an open question.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the inverse boundary value problem for the fourth - order partial differential operator (i.e., the bi - harmonic operator with third - order nonlinear tensor perturbations) in a bounded domain \(\Omega\). Specifically, the authors study whether the Dirichlet - to - Neumann map on a given boundary can uniquely determine the nonlinear tensor perturbations \(A^{(1)}\), \(A^{(2)}\), \(A^{(3)}\) and \(q\) of the bi - harmonic operator. Here, the bi - harmonic operator \(L_{A^{(1)}, A^{(2)}, A^{(3)}, q}\) has the following form: \[ L_{A^{(1)}, A^{(2)}, A^{(3)}, q}u := (\Delta)^2u + \sum_{i_1, i_2, i_3 = 1}^n A^{(3)}_{i_1i_2i_3}(x, u)D^3_{i_1i_2i_3}u + \sum_{i_1, i_2 = 1}^n A^{(2)}_{i_1i_2}(x, u)D^2_{i_1i_2}u + \sum_{i_1 = 1}^n A^{(1)}_{i_1}(x, u)D_{i_1}u + q(x, u), \] where \(u\in C^\infty(\Omega)\), and \(D^j_{i_1...i_j}=\frac{\partial^j}{\partial x_{i_1}...\partial x_{i_j}}\), \(i_1,..., i_j\in\{1, 2,..., n\}\), \(j = 1, 2, 3\). The main result of the paper shows that, under appropriate assumptions, the Dirichlet - to - Neumann map can indeed uniquely determine these nonlinear tensor perturbations. This result is proved by introducing and analyzing the generalized momentum ray transforms, especially by constructing complex geometric optics solutions. It is worth noting that the inverse boundary value problem for linear tensor perturbations, especially the third - order linear tensor perturbations, is still an unsolved problem at present. This is because the existing methods (such as Carleman estimates) have limitations when dealing with third - order linear perturbations. However, the introduction of nonlinearity provides new possibilities for solving such problems.
