Abstract:We will present a consistent description of Hamiltonian dynamics on the ``symplectic extended phase space'' that is analogous to that of a time-\underline{in}dependent Hamiltonian system on the conventional symplectic phase space. The extended Hamiltonian $H_{1}$ and the pertaining extended symplectic structure that establish the proper canonical extension of a conventional Hamiltonian $H$ will be derived from a generalized formulation of Hamilton's variational principle. The extended canonical transformation theory then naturally permits transformations that also map the time scales of original and destination system, while preserving the extended Hamiltonian $H_{1}$, and hence the form of the canonical equations derived from $H_{1}$. The Lorentz transformation, as well as time scaling transformations in celestial mechanics, will be shown to represent particular canonical transformations in the symplectic extended phase space. Furthermore, the generalized canonical transformation approach allows to directly map explicitly time-dependent Hamiltonians into time-independent ones. An ``extended'' generating function that defines transformations of this kind will be presented for the time-dependent damped harmonic oscillator and for a general class of explicitly time-dependent potentials. In the appendix, we will reestablish the proper form of the extended Hamiltonian $H_{1}$ by means of a Legendre transformation of the extended Lagrangian $L_{1}$.

Abstract:We study Hamiltonian flows in a real separable Hilbert space endowed with a symplectic structure. Measures on the Hilbert space that are invariant with respect to the flows of completely integrable Hamiltonian systems are investigated. These construction gives the opportunity to describe Hamiltonian flows in the phase space by means of unitary groups in the space of functions that are quadratically integrable by the invariant measure. Invariant measures are applied to the study of model linear Hamiltonian systems that admit features of the type of unlimited increase in kinetic energy over a finite time. Due to this approach solutions of Hamilton equations that admit singularities can be described by means of the phase flow in the extended phase space and by the corresponding Koopman representation of the unitary

Jet space extensions of infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems

Abstract:We analyze infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems corresponding to partial differential equations on one-dimensional spatial domains formulated with formally skew-adjoint Hamiltonian operators and nonlinear Hamiltonian density. In various applications, the Hamiltonian density can depend on spatial derivatives of the state such that these systems can not straightforwardly be formulated as boundary port-Hamiltonian system using a Stokes-Dirac structure. In this work, we show that any Hamiltonian system of the above class can be reformulated as a Hamiltonian system on the jet space, in which the Hamiltonian density only depends on the extended state variable itself and not on its derivatives. Consequently, well-known geometric formulations with Stokes- Dirac structures are applicable. Additionally, we provide a similar result for dissipative systems. We illustrate the developed theory by means of the the Boussinesq equation, the dynamics of an elastic rod and the Allen-Cahn equation.

Abstract:We propose a new approach to the theory of normal forms for Hamiltonian systems near a non-resonant elliptic singular point. We consider the space of all Hamiltonian functions with such an equilibrium position at the origin and construct a differential equation in this space. Solutions of this equation move Hamiltonian functions towards their normal forms. Shifts along the flow of this equation correspond to canonical coordinate changes. So, we have a continuous normalization procedure. The formal aspect of the theory presents no difficulties. The analytic aspect and the problems of convergence of series are as usual non-trivial.

Abstract:In the companion paper we motivated a renormalisation flow on Osterwalder-Schrader data (OS-data) consisting of 1. a Hilbert space, 2. a cyclic vacuum and 3. a Hamiltonian annihilating that vacuum. As the name suggests, the motivation was via the OS reconstruction theorem which allows to reconstruct the OS data from an OS measure satisfying (a subset of) the OS axioms, in particular reflection positivity. The guiding principle was to map the usual Wilsonian path integral renormalisation flow onto a flow of the corresponding OS data. We showed that this induced flow on the OS data has an unwanted feature which disqualifies the associated coarse grained Hamiltonians from being the projections of a continuum Hamiltonian onto vectors in the coarse grained Hilbert space. This motivated the definition of a direct Hamiltonian renormalisation flow which follows the guiding principle but does not suffer from the afore mentioned caveat. In order to test our proposal, we apply it to the only known completely solvable model, namely the case of free scalar quantum fields. In this paper we focus on the Klein Gordon field in two spacetime dimensions and illustrate the difference between the path integral induced and direct Hamiltonian flow. Generalisations to more general models in higher dimensions will be discussed in our companion papers.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that any C 1 -regular Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifold in a symplectic manifold is smooth. More broadly, we develop a regularity theory for a class of fourth order nonlinear elliptic equations with two distributional derivatives. Our fourth order regularity theory originates in the geometrically motivated variational problem for the volume functional, but should have applications beyond.

Abstract:An outstanding property of any Hamiltonian system is the symplecticity of its flow, namely, the continuous trajectory preserves volume in phase space. Given a symplectic but discrete trajectory generated by a transition matrix applied at a fixed time-increment ($\tau > 0$), it was generally believed that there exists a unique Hamiltonian producing a continuous trajectory that coincides at all discrete times ($t = n\tau$ with $n$ integers) as long as $\tau$ is small enough. However, it is now exactly demonstrated that, for any given discrete symplectic dynamics of a harmonic oscillator, there exist an infinite number of real-valued Hamiltonians for any small value of $\tau$ and an infinite number of complex-valued Hamiltonians for any large value of $\tau$. In addition, when the transition matrix is similar to a Jordan normal form with the supradiagonal element of $1$ and the two identical diagonal elements of either $1$ or $-1$, only one solution to the Hamiltonian is found for the case with the diagonal elements of $1$, but no solution can be found for the other case.

Abstract:In the paper we discuss the process of regularization of the Hamiltonian constraint in the Ashtekar approach to quantizing gravity. We show in detail the calculation of the action of the regulated Hamiltonian constraint on Wilson loops. An important issue considered in the paper is the closure of the constraint algebra. The main result we obtain is that the Poisson bracket between the regulated Hamiltonian constraint and the Diffeomorphism constraint is equal to a sum of regulated Hamiltonian constraints with appropriately redefined regulating functions.

As a corollary of this correspondence, we show that energy levels above the maximum of the potential energy of mechanical Hamiltonian systems can be viewed as stationary fluid flows, though the metric is not prescribed. In particular, we showcase the emblematic example of the $n$-body problem and focus on the Kepler problem. We explicitly construct a compatible Riemannian metric that makes the Kepler problem of celestial mechanics a stationary fluid flow (of Beltrami type) on a suitable manifold, the Kepler-Euler flow.

High-dimensional families of holomorphic curves and three-dimensional energy surfaces

Abstract:Let $H: \mathbb{R}^4 \to \mathbb{R}$ be any smooth function. This article introduces some arguments for extracting dynamical information about the Hamiltonian flow of $H$ from high-dimensional families of closed holomorphic curves. We work in a very general setting, without imposing convexity or contact-type assumptions. For any compact regular level set $Y$, we prove that the Hamiltonian flow admits an infinite family of pairwise distinct, proper, compact invariant subsets whose union is dense in $Y$. This is a generalization of the Fish-Hofer theorem, which showed that $Y$ has at least one proper compact invariant subset. We then establish a global Le Calvez-Yoccoz property for almost every compact regular level set $Y$: any compact invariant subset containing all closed orbits is either equal to $Y$ or is not locally maximal. Next, we prove quantitative versions, in four dimensions, of the celebrated almost-existence theorem for Hamiltonian systems; such questions have been open for general Hamiltonians since the late $1980$s. We prove that almost every compact regular level set of $H$ contains at least two closed orbits, a sharp lower bound. Under explicit and $C^\infty$-generic conditions on $H$, we prove almost-existence of infinitely many closed orbits.

Integrable multi-Hamiltonian systems from reduction of an extended quasi-Poisson double of $\operatorname{U}(n)$

Abstract:We construct a master dynamical system on a $\operatorname{U}(n)$ quasi-Poisson manifold, $\mathcal{M}_d$, built from the double $\operatorname{U}(n) \times \operatorname{U}(n)$ and $d\geq 2$ open balls in $\mathbb{C}^n$, whose quasi-Poisson structures are obtained from $T^* \mathbb{R}^n$ by exponentiation. A pencil of quasi-Poisson bivectors $P_{\underline{z}}$ is defined on $\mathcal{M}_d$ that depends on $d(d-1)/2$ arbitrary real parameters and gives rise to pairwise compatible Poisson brackets on the $\operatorname{U}(n)$-invariant functions. The master system on $\mathcal{M}_d$ is a quasi-Poisson analogue of the degenerate integrable system of free motion on the extended cotangent bundle $T^*\!\operatorname{U}(n) \times \mathbb{C}^{n\times d}$. Its commuting Hamiltonians are pullbacks of the class functions on one of the $\operatorname{U}(n)$ factors. We prove that the master system descends to a degenerate integrable system on a dense open subset of the smooth component of the quotient space $\mathcal{M}_d/\operatorname{U}(n)$ associated with the principal orbit type. Any reduced Hamiltonian arising from a class function generates the same flow via any of the compatible Poisson structures stemming from the bivectors $P_{\underline{z}}$. The restrictions of the reduced system on minimal symplectic leaves parameterized by generic elements of the center of $\operatorname{U}(n)$ provide a new real form of the complex, trigonometric spin Ruijsenaars-Schneider model of Krichever and Zabrodin. This generalizes the derivation of the compactified trigonometric RS model found previously in the $d=1$ case.

Abstract:We prove a Morrey-type theorem for Hamiltonian stationary submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}^{n}$. Namely, if $L$ $\subset$ $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ is a $C^{1}$ Lagrangian submanifold with weakly harmonic Lagrangian phase $\theta,$ then $L$ must be smooth. In the process we also discuss a local version of the equation, which is a nonlinear fourth order double divergence equation of the potential function whose gradient graph defines the Hamiltonian stationary submanifolds locally, and we establish full regularity and removability of singular sets of capacity zero for weak solutions with $C^{1,1}$ norm below a dimensional constant.

Abstract:We investigate a dynamic model described by the classical Hamiltonian , where , in classical, semi-classical, and quantum mechanics. In the high-energy limit, the phase path resembles that of the model. However, the non-zero value of acts as a regulator, removing the singularities that appear in the region where , resulting in a discrete spectrum characterized by a logarithmic increase in state density. Classical solutions are described by elliptic functions, with the period being determined by elliptic integrals. In semi-classical approximation, we speculate that the asymptotic Riemann-Siegel formula may be interpreted as summing over contributions from multiply phase paths. We present three different forms of quantized Hamiltonians, and reformulate them into the standard Schr" odinger equation with -like potentials. Numerical evaluations of the spectra for these forms are carried out and reveal minor differences in energy levels. Among them, one interesting form possesses Hamiltonian in the Schr" odinger equation that is identical to its classical version. In such scenarios, the eigenvalue equations can be expressed as the vanishing of the Mathieu functions' value at points, and furthermore, the Mathieu functions can be represented as the wave functions.

Quasi-exactly solvable extensions of the Kepler-Coulomb potential on the sphere

Abstract:We consider a family of extensions of the Kepler-Coulomb potential on a $d$-dimensional sphere and analyze it in a deformed supersymmetric framework, wherein the starting potential is known to exhibit a deformed shape invariance property. We show that the members of the extended family are also endowed with such a property, provided some constraint conditions relating the potential parameters are satisfied, in other words they are conditionally deformed shape invariant. Since, in the second step of the construction of a partner potential hierarchy, the constraint conditions change, we impose compatibility conditions between the two sets to build quasi-exactly solvable potentials with known ground and first-excited states. Some explicit results are obtained for the first three members of the family. We then use a generating function method, wherein the first two superpotentials, the first two partner potentials, and the first two eigenstates of the starting potential are built from some generating function $W_+(r)$ [and its accompanying function $W_-(r)$]. From the results obtained for the latter for the first three family members, we propose some formulas for $W_{\pm}(r)$ valid for the $m$th family member, depending on $m+1$ constants $a_0$, $a_1$, \ldots, $a_m$. Such constants satisfy a system of $m+1$ linear equations. Solving the latter allows us to extend the results up to the seventh family member and then to formulate a conjecture giving the general structure of the $a_i$ constants in terms of the parameters of the problem.

Non-Linear Operator-valued Elliptic Flows with Application to Quantum Field Theory

Abstract:Differential equations on spaces of operators are very little developed in Mathematics, being in general very challenging. Here, we study a novel system of such (non-linear) differential equations. We show it has a unique solution for all times, for instance in the operator or Hilbert-Schmidt norm topologies. This system presents remarkable ellipticity properties that turn out to be crucial for the study of the infinite-time limit of its solution, which is proven under relatively weak, albeit probably not necessary, hypotheses on the initial data. This system of differential equations is the elliptic counterpart of an hyperbolic flow applied to quantum field theory to diagonalize Hamiltonians that are quadratic in the bosonic field. In a similar way, this elliptic flow, in particular its asymptotics, has application in quantum field theory: it can be used to diagonalize Hamiltonians that are quadratic in the fermionic field while giving new explicit expressions and properties of these pivotal Hamiltonians of quantum field theory and quantum statistical mechanics.

On the Fredholm Lagrangian Grassmannian, Spectral Flow and ODEs in Hilbert Spaces

Abstract:We consider homoclinic solutions for Hamiltonian systems in symplectic Hilbert spaces and generalise spectral flow formulas that were proved by Pejsachowicz and the author in finite dimensions some years ago. Roughly speaking, our main theorem relates the spectra of infinite dimensional Hamiltonian systems under homoclinic boundary conditions to intersections of their stable and unstable spaces. Our proof has some interest in its own. Firstly, we extend a celebrated theorem by Cappell, Lee and Miller about the classical Maslov index in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ to symplectic Hilbert spaces. Secondly, we generalise the classical index bundle for families of Fredholm operators of Atiyah and Jänich to unbounded operators for applying it to Hamiltonian systems under varying boundary conditions. Finally, we substantially make use of striking results by Abbondandolo and Majer to study Fredholm properties of infinite dimensional Hamiltonian systems.

Abstract:In this article, we continue our study of 'Frobenius structures' and symplectic spectral invariants in the context of symplectic spinors. By studying the case of $C^1$-small Hamiltonian mappings on symplectic manifolds $M$ admitting a metaplectic structure and a parallel $\hat O(n)$-reduction of its metaplectic frame bundle we derive how the construction of 'singularly rigid' resp. 'self-dual' pairs of irreducible Frobenius structures associated to this Hamiltonian mapping $\Phi$ leads to a Hopf-algebra-type structure on the set of irreducible Frobenius structures. We then generalize this construction and define abstractly conditions under which 'dual pairs' associated to a given $C^1$-small Hamiltonian mapping emerge, these dual pairs are essentially pairs $(s_1, J_1), (s_2, J_2)$ of closed sections of the cotangent bundle $T^*M$ and (in general singular) compatible almost complex structures on $M$ satisfying certain integrability conditions involving a Koszul bracket. In the second part of this paper, we translate these characterizing conditions for general 'dual pairs' of Frobenius structures associated to a $C^1$-small Hamiltonian system into the notion of matrix factorization. We propose an algebraic setting involving modules over certain fractional ideals of function rings on $M$ so that the set of 'dual pairs' in the above sense and the set of matrix factorizations associated to these modules stand in bijective relation. We prove, in the real-analytic case, a Riemann Roch-type theorem relating a certain Euler characteristic arising from a given matrix factorization in the above sense to (integral) cohomological data on $M$ using Cheeger-Simons-type differential characters, derived from a given pair $(s_1, J_1), (s_2, J_2)$. We propose extensions of these techniques to the case of 'geodesic convexity-smallness' of $\Phi$ and to the case of general Hamiltonian systems on $M$.

Generalization of Hamiltonian Mechanics to a Three Dimensional Phase Space

Abstract:Classical Hamiltonian mechanics is realized by the action of a Poisson bracket on a Hamiltonian function. The Hamiltonian function is a constant of motion (the energy) of the system. The properties of the Poisson bracket are encapsulated in the symplectic 2-form, a closed second order differential form. Due to closure, the symplectic 2-form is preserved by the Hamiltonian flow, and it assigns an invariant (Liouville) measure on the phase space through the Lie-Darboux theorem. In this paper we propose a generalization of classical Hamiltonian mechanics to a three-dimensional phase space: the classical Poisson bracket is replaced with a generalized Poisson bracket acting on a pair of Hamiltonian functions, while the symplectic 2-form is replaced by a symplectic 3-form. We show that, using the closure of the symplectic 3-form, a result analogous to the classical Lie-Darboux theorem holds: locally, there exist smooth coordinates such that the components of the symplectic 3-form are constants, and the phase space is endowed with a preserved volume element. Furthermore, as in the classical theory, the Jacobi identity for the generalized Poisson bracket mathematically expresses the closure of the associated symplectic form. As a consequence, constant skew-symmetric third order contravariant tensors always define generalized Poisson brackets. This is in contrast with generalizations of Hamiltonian mechanics postulating the fundamental identity as replacement for the Jacobi identity. In particular, we find that the fundamental identity represents a stronger requirement than the closure of the symplectic 3-form.

Abstract:Let $(X,\alpha)$ be a Kahler manifold of dimension n, and let $[\omega] \in H^{1,1}(X,\mathbb{R})$. We study the problem of specifying the Lagrangian phase of $\omega$ with respect to $\alpha$, which is described by the nonlinear elliptic equation \[ \sum_{i=1}^{n} \arctan(\lambda_i)= h(x) \] where $\lambda_i$ are the eigenvalues of $\omega$ with respect to $\alpha$. When $h(x)$ is a topological constant, this equation corresponds to the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills (dHYM) equation, and is related by Mirror Symmetry to the existence of special Lagrangian submanifolds of the mirror. We introduce a notion of subsolution for this equation, and prove a priori $C^{2,\beta}$ estimates when $|h|>(n-2)\frac{\pi}{2}$ and a subsolution exists. Using the method of continuity we show that the dHYM equation admits a smooth solution in the supercritical phase case, whenever a subsolution exists. Finally, we discover some stability-type cohomological obstructions to the existence of solutions to the dHYM equation and we conjecture that when these obstructions vanish the dHYM equation admits a solution. We confirm this conjecture for complex surfaces.
