Abstract:The shadow-complexity is an invariant of closed $4$-manifolds defined by using $2$-dimensional polyhedra called Turaev's shadows, which, roughly speaking, measures how complicated a $2$-skeleton of the $4$-manifold is. In this paper, we define a new version $\mathrm{sc}_{r}$ of shadow-complexity depending on an extra parameter $r\geq0$, and we investigate the relationship between this complexity and the trisection genus $g$. More explicitly, we prove an inequality $g(W) \leq 2+2\mathrm{sc}_{r}(W)$ for any closed $4$-manifold $W$ and any $r\geq1/2$. Moreover, we determine the exact values of $\mathrm{sc}_{1/2}$ for infinitely many $4$-manifolds, and also we classify all the closed $4$-manifolds with $\mathrm{sc}_{1/2}\leq1/2$.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the relationship between the shadow-complexity of 4-manifolds and the trisection genus, and defines a new complexity metric called weighted shadow-complexity, denoted as \(sc_r\). ### Main Contributions 1. **New Complexity Definition**: - Defined the weighted shadow-complexity \(sc_r\), which depends on an additional parameter \(r \geq 0\). This complexity considers the complexity of the 2-skeleton of the shadow in the 4-manifold. 2. **Inequality Proof**: - Proved an important inequality \(g(W) \leq 2 + 2sc_r(W)\), where \(g(W)\) is the trisection genus of the 4-manifold \(W\), and \(sc_r(W)\) is its weighted shadow-complexity. This inequality holds for any closed 4-manifold \(W\) and \(r \geq 1/2\). 3. **Special Case Study**: - Determined the exact value of the weighted shadow-complexity \(sc_{1/2}(W)\) for specific 4-manifolds (such as \(k_1(S^2 \times S^2) \# k_2\mathbb{CP}^2 \# k_3\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^2\)) when \(r = 1/2\). - Classified all closed 4-manifolds with a weighted shadow-complexity not exceeding 1/2. ### Methodology - The paper introduces methods for constructing the trisection of a given 4-manifold from its shadow, including describing the trisection graph, which allows estimating the trisection genus of the 4-manifold from the combinatorial information of the shadow. - Proposed methods for transitioning from shadows to Kirby diagrams, and from Kirby diagrams to trisections. ### Conclusion - The weighted shadow-complexity \(sc_r\) provides a new perspective for studying 4-manifolds, particularly in comparing it with the trisection genus. - Through theoretical analysis and empirical validation, the effectiveness of the proposed inequality \(g(W) \leq 2 + 2sc_r(W)\) was demonstrated. - For the case \(r = 1/2\), the exact values of the weighted shadow-complexity for specific 4-manifolds were provided, and all closed 4-manifolds with a weighted shadow-complexity not exceeding 1/2 were classified.
