Abstract:The shadow-complexity is an invariant of closed $4$-manifolds defined by using $2$-dimensional polyhedra called Turaev's shadows, which, roughly speaking, measures how complicated a $2$-skeleton of the $4$-manifold is. In this paper, we define a new version $\mathrm{sc}_{r}$ of shadow-complexity depending on an extra parameter $r\geq0$, and we investigate the relationship between this complexity and the trisection genus $g$. More explicitly, we prove an inequality $g(W) \leq 2+2\mathrm{sc}_{r}(W)$ for any closed $4$-manifold $W$ and any $r\geq1/2$. Moreover, we determine the exact values of $\mathrm{sc}_{1/2}$ for infinitely many $4$-manifolds, and also we classify all the closed $4$-manifolds with $\mathrm{sc}_{1/2}\leq1/2$.

Abstract:We introduce a new invariant for a $2$-knot in $S^4$, called the shadow-complexity, based on the theory of Turaev shadows, and we give a characterization of $2$-knots with shadow-complexity at most $1$. Specifically, we show that the unknot is the only $2$-knot with shadow-complexity $0$ and that there exist infinitely many $2$-knots with shadow-complexity $1$.

Abstract:We show that if $\mathcal{A} \subset {[n] \choose n/2}$ with measure bounded away from zero and from one, then the $\Omega(\sqrt{n})$-iterated upper shadows of $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{A}^c$ intersect in a set of positive measure. This confirms (in a strong form) a conjecture of Friedgut. It can be seen as a stability result for the Kruskal--Katona theorem.

Abstract:In any CAT(k) space M, the "shadow" of a tangent vector Z at a point p is the set vectors that form an angle of \pi or more with Z. Taking logarithm maps at points approaching p along a fixed geodesic ray from p with tangent Z collapses the shadow to a single ray while leaving isometrically intact every convex cone that avoids the shadow of Z.

Abstract:We show that if a closed oriented $n$-manifold $M$ has a non-trivial cohomology class of even degree $k$, whose all pullbacks to products of type $S^1\times N$ vanish, then the topological complexity $\mathrm{TC}(M)$ is at least $6$, if $n$ is odd, and at least $7$ or $9$, if $n$ is even. These bounds extend and improve a result of Mescher and apply for instance to negatively curved manifolds and to connected sums with at least one such summand. In fact, better bounds are obtained due to the non-vanishing of the Gromov norm. As a consequence, in dimension four, we completely determine the topological complexity of these connected sums, namely we show that it is equal to its maximum value nine. Furthermore, we discuss realisation of degree two homology classes by tori, and show how to construct non-realisable classes out of realisable classes in connected sums. The examples of this paper will quite often be aspherical manifolds whose fundamental groups have trivial center and connected sums. We thus discuss the possible relation between the maximum topological complexity $2n+1$ and the triviality of the center for aspherical $n$-manifolds and their connected sums.

Abstract:Petrov and Pilyugin (2015) generalized a notion of $C^0$ transversality of Sakai (1995) using smooth curves. Their definition involves only continuous maps from ${\mathbb R}^n$ to a manifold, which is a purely topological one. They also provided a sufficient condition for the $C^0$ transversality in terms of homological nature. In this paper, we prove that such a homological condition of Axiom A diffeomorphisms is sufficient for enjoying the shadowing property. Moreover, it is proved that the $C^0$ transversality of Axiom A diffeomorphisms with codimension one basic sets implies the homological condition.

Abstract:We study necessary conditions for local maximizers of the isotropic constant that are related to notions of decomposability. Our main result asserts that the polar body of a local maximizer of the isotropic constant can only have few Minkowski summands; more precisely, its dimension of decomposability is at most $\frac12(n^2+3n)$. Using a similar proof strategy, a result by Campi, Colesanti and Gronchi concerning RS-decomposability is extended to a larger class of shadow systems. We discuss the polytopal case, which turns out to have connections to (affine) rigidity theory, and investigate how the bound on the maximal number of irredundant summands can be improved if we restrict our attention to convex bodies with certain symmetries.

$3$-Cut Complexes of Squared Cycle Graphs

Abstract:For a positive integer $k$, the $k$-cut complex of a graph $G$ is the simplicial complex whose facets are the $(|V(G)|-k)$-subsets $\sigma$ of the vertex set $V(G)$ of $G$ such that the induced subgraph of $G$ on $V(G) \setminus \sigma$ is disconnected. These complexes first appeared in the master thesis of Denker and were further studied by Bayer et al.\ in [Topology of cut complexes of graphs, SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 2024]. In the same article, Bayer et al.\ conjectured that for $k \geq 3$, the $k$-cut complexes of squared cycle graphs are shellable. Moreover, they also conjectured about the Betti numbers of these complexes when $k=3$. In this article, we prove these conjectures for $k=3$.

The Kakimizu complex for genus one hyperbolic knots in the 3-sphere

Abstract:The Kakimizu complex $MS(K)$ for a knot $K\subset\mathbb{S}^3$ is the simplicial complex with vertices the isotopy classes of minimal genus Seifert surfaces in the exterior of $K$ and simplices any set of vertices with mutually disjoint representative surfaces. In this paper we determine the structure of the Kakimizu complex $MS(K)$ of genus one hyperbolic knots $K\subset\mathbb{S}^3$. In contrast with the case of hyperbolic knots of higher genus, it is known that the dimension $d$ of $MS(K)$ is universally bounded by $4$, and we show that $MS(K)$ consists of a single $d$-simplex for $d=0,4$ and otherwise of at most two $d$-simplices which intersect in a common $(d-1)$-face. For the cases $1\leq d\leq 3$ we also construct infinitely many examples of such knots where $MS(K)$ consists of two $d$-simplices.

Abstract:We study three notions of shadowing: classical shadowing, limit (or asymptotic) shadowing, and s-limit shadowing. We show that classical and s-limit shadowing coincide for tent maps and, more generally, for piecewise linear interval maps with constant slopes, and are further equivalent to the linking property introduced by Chen in 1991. We also construct a system which exhibits shadowing but not limit shadowing, and we study how shadowing properties transfer to maximal transitive subsystems and inverse limits (sometimes called natural extensions). Where practicable, we show that our results are best possible by means of examples.

Abstract:We construct a geometric ideal triangulation for every fundamental shadow link complement and solve the gluing equation explicitly in terms of the logarithmic holonomies of the meridians of the link for any generic character in the distinguished component of the $\mathrm{PSL}(2;\mathbb{C})$-character variety of the link complement. As immediate applications, we obtain a new formula for the volume of a hyperideal tetrahedron in terms of its dihedral angles, and a formula for the volume of hyperbolic 3-manifolds obtained by doing Dehn-fillings to some of the boundary components of fundamental shadow link complements. Moreover, by using these ideal triangulations, we verify the 1-loop conjecture proposed by Dimofte and Garoufalidis for every fundamental shadow link complement. By using the result of Kalelkar-Schleimer-Segerman \cite{KSS}, we also prove the topological invariance of the 1-loop invariant and show that the 1-loop invariant satisfies a surgery formula. As a result, we prove the 1-loop conjecture for manifolds obtained by doing sufficiently long Dehn-fillings on boundary components of any fundamental shadow link complement. This verifies the 1-loop conjecture for a large class of hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

Abstract:We study a cross-ratio of four generic points of $S^3$ which comes from spherical CR geometry. We construct a homomorphism from a certain group generated by generic configurations of four points in $S^3$ to the pre-Bloch group $\mathcal {P}(\C)$. If $M$ is a $3$-dimensional spherical CR manifold with a CR triangulation, by our homomorphism, we get a $\mathcal {P}(\C)$-valued invariant for $M$. We show that when applying to it the Bloch-Wigner function, it is zero. Under some conditions on $M$, we show the invariant lies in the Bloch group $\mathcal B(k)$, where $k$ is the field generated by the cross-ratio. For a CR triangulation of Whitehead link complement, we show its invariant is a non-trivial torsion in $\mathcal B(k)$.

Abstract:In $1961$, Mazur constructed a contractible, compact, smooth $4$-manifold with boundary which is not homeomorphic to the standard $4$-ball, using a $0$-handle, a $1$-handle and a $2$-handle. In this paper, for any integer $n\geq2,$ we construct a contractible, compact, smooth $(n+3)$-manifold with boundary which is not homeomorphic to the standard $(n+3)$-ball, using a $0$-handle, an $n$-handle and an $(n+1)$-handle. The key step is the construction of an interesting knotted $n$-sphere in $S^n\times S^2$ generalizing the Mazur pattern.

Abstract:Let $T$ be a satellite knot, link, or spatial graph in a 3-manifold $M$ that is either $S^3$ or a lens space. Let $b_0$ and $b_1$ denote genus 0 and genus 1 bridge number, respectively. Suppose that $T$ has a companion knot $K$ and wrapping number $\omega$ with respect to $K$. When $K$ is not a torus knot, we show that $b_1(T)\geq \omega b_1(K)$. There are previously known counter-examples if $K$ is a torus knot. Along the way, we generalize and give a new proof of Schubert's result that $b_0(T) \geq \omega b_0(K)$. We also prove versions of the theorem applicable to when $T$ is a ``lensed satellite'' or when there is a torus separating components of $T$.

Small Shadow Partitions

Abstract:We study the problem of partitioning the unit cube $[0,1]^n$ into $c$ parts so that each $d$-dimensional axis-parallel projection has small volume. This natural combinatorial/geometric question was first studied by Kopparty and Nagargoje [KN23] as a reformulation of the problem of determining the achievable parameters for seedless multimergers -- which extract randomness from `$d$-where' random sources (generalizing somewhere random sources). This question is closely related to influences of variables and is about a partition analogue of Shearer's lemma. Our main result answers a question of [KN23]: for $d = n-1$, we show that for $c$ even as large as $2^{o(n)}$, it is possible to partition $[0,1]^n$ into $c$ parts so that every $n-1$-dimensional axis-parallel projection has volume at most $(1/c) ( 1 + o(1) )$. Previously, this was shown by [KN23] for $c$ up to $O(\sqrt{n})$. The construction of our partition is related to influences of functions, and we present a clean geometric/combinatorial conjecture about this partitioning problem that would imply the KKL theorem on influences of Boolean functions.

Exploring Homological Properties of Independent Complexes of Kneser Graphs

Abstract:We discuss the topological properties of the independence complex of Kneser graphs, Ind(KG$(n, k))$, with $n\geq 3$ and $k\geq 1$. By identifying one kind of maximal simplices through projective planes, we obtain homology generators for the $6$-dimensional homology of the complex Ind(KG$(3, k))$. Using cross-polytopal generators, we provide lower bounds for the rank of $p$-dimensional homology of the complex Ind(KG$(n, k))$ where $p=1/2\cdot {2n+k\choose 2n}$.

Complex Hyperbolic Geometry of Chain Links

Abstract:The complex hyperbolic triangle group $\Gamma=\Delta_{4,\infty,\infty;\infty}$ acting on the complex hyperbolic plane ${\bf H}^2_{\mathbb C}$ is generated by complex reflections $I_1$, $I_2$, $I_3$ such that the product $I_2I_3$ has order four, the products $I_3I_1$, $I_1I_2$ are parabolic and the product $I_1I_3I_2I_3$ is an accidental parabolic element. Unexpectedly, the product $I_1I_2I_3I_2$ is a hidden accidental parabolic element. We show that the 3-manifold at infinity of $\Delta_{4,\infty,\infty;\infty}$ is the complement of the chain link $8^4_1$ in the 3-sphere. In particular, the quartic cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold $S^3-8^4_1$ admits a spherical CR-uniformization. The proof relies on a new technique to show that the ideal boundary of the Ford domain is an infinite-genus handlebody. Motivated by this result and supported by the previous studies of various authors, we conjecture that the chain link $C_p$ is an ancestor of the 3-manifold at infinity of the critical complex hyperbolic triangle group $\Delta_{p,q,r;\infty}$, for $3 \leq p \leq 9$.

Abstract:Moser's shadow problem asks to estimate the shadow function $\mathfrak{s}_b(n)$, which is the largest number such that for each bounded convex polyhedron $P$ with $n$ vertices in $3$-space there is some direction ${\bf v}$ (depending on $P$) such that, when illuminated by parallel light rays from infinity in direction ${\bf v}$, the polyhedron casts a shadow having at least $\mathfrak{s}_b(n)$ vertices. A general version of the problem allows unbounded polyhedra as well, and has associated shadow function $\mathfrak{s}_u(n)$. This paper presents correct order of magnitude asymptotic bounds on these functions. The bounded case has answer $\mathfrak{s}_b(n) = \Theta \big( \log (n)/ (\log(\log (n))\big$. The unbounded shadow problem is shown to have the different asymptotic growth rate $\mathfrak{s}_u(n) = \Theta \big(1\big)$. Results on the bounded shadow problem follow from 1989 work of Chazelle, Edelsbrunner and Guibas on the (bounded) silhouette span number $\mathfrak{s}_b^{\ast}(n)$, defined analogously but with arbitrary light sources. We complete the picture by showing that the unbounded silhouette span number $\mathfrak{s}_u^{\ast}(n)$ grows as $\Theta \big( \log (n)/ (\log(\log (n))\big)$.

Abstract:In this paper we study the discreteness of complex hyperbolic triangle groups of type $[m,m,0; n_1, n_2, 2]$, i.e. groups of isometries of the complex hyperbolic plane generated by three complex reflections of orders $n_1, n_2, 2$ in complex geodesics with pairwise distances $m, m, 0$. For fixed $m$, the parameter space of such groups is of real dimension one. We determine the possible orders for $n_1$ and $n_2$ and also intervals in the parameter space that correspond to discrete and non-discrete triangle groups.
