Abstract:This paper was motivated by a problem left by Herzog and Hibi, namely to classify all unmixed polymatroidal ideals. In the particular case of polymatroidal ideals corresponding to discrete polymatroids of Veronese type, i.e ideals of Veronese type, we give a complete description of the associated prime ideals and then, we show that such an ideal is unmixed if and only if it is Cohen-Macaulay. We also give for this type of ideals equivalent characterizations for being equidimensional.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a field and $R=K[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$. Let $\Delta$ be a simplicial complex on $n$ vertices and $I=I_{\Delta}$ be its Stanley-Reisner ideal. In this paper, we show that if $I$ is a matroidal ideal then the following conditions are equivalent: $(i)$ $\Delta$ is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay; $(ii)$ $\Delta$ is shellable; $(iii)$ $\Delta$ is vertex decomposable. Also, if $I$ is a minimally generated by $u_1,\ldots,u_s$ such that $s\leq 3$ or ${\rm supp}(u_i)\cup {\rm supp}(u_j)=\{x_1,\ldots,x_n\}$ for all $i\neq j$, then $\Delta$ is vertex decomposable. Furthermore, we prove that if $I$ is a monomial ideal of degree $2$ then $I$ is weakly polymatroidal if and only if $I$ has linear quotients if and only if $I$ is vertex splittable.

Abstract:Let $R=K[x_1,...,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ with the maximal ideal $\frak{m}=(x_1,...,x_n)$. Let $\astab(I)$ and $\dstab(I)$ be the smallest integer $n$ for which $\Ass(I^n)$ and $\depth(I^n)$ stabilize, respectively. In this paper we show that $\astab(I)=\dstab(I)$ in the following cases: \begin{itemize} \item[(i)] $I$ is a matroidal ideal and $n\leq 5$. \item[(ii)] $I$ is a polymatroidal ideal, $n=4$ and $\frak{m}\notin\Ass^{\infty}(I)$, where $\Ass^{\infty}(I)$ is the stable set of associated prime ideals of $I$. \item[(iii)] $I$ is a polymatroidal ideal of degree $2$. \end{itemize} Moreover, we give an example of a polymatroidal ideal for which $\astab(I)\neq\dstab(I)$. This is a counterexample to the conjecture of Herzog and Qureshi, according to which these two numbers are the same for polymatroidal ideals.

Generalized mixed product ideals whose powers have a linear resolution

Abstract:In this paper we study classes of monomial ideals for which all of its powers have a linear resolution. Let K[x_{1},x_{2}] be the polynomial ring in two variables over the field K, and let L be the generalized mixed product ideal induced by a monomial ideal I. It is shown that, if I\subset K[x_1,x_2] and the ideals substituting the monomials in I are Veronese type ideals, then L^{k} has a linear resolution for all k\geq 1. Furthermore, we compute some algebraic invariants of generalized mixed product ideals induced by a transversal polymatroidal ideal.

Abstract:We study the homological shifts of polymatroidal ideals. It is shown that the first homological shift ideal of any polymatroidal ideal is again polymatroidal, supporting a conjecture of Bandari, Bayati and Herzog that predicts that all homological shift ideals of a polymatroidal ideal are polymatroidal. We also study the "socle ideal" $\text{soc}(I)$ of a polymatroidal ideal $I$ and relate it to the highest homological shift ideal of $I$. It is shown that $\text{soc}(I)$ is polymatroidal if: (i) $I$ is a polymatroidal ideal generated in degree two, (ii) $I$ is a polymatroidal ideal in at most three variables, (iii) $I$ is matroidal, (iv) $I$ is a principal Borel ideal, (v) $I$ is a PLP-polymatroidal ideal, (vi) $I$ is a LP-polymatroidal ideal.

Abstract:An ideal in a polynomial ring encodes a system of linear partial differential equations with constant coefficients. Primary decomposition organizes the solutions to the PDE. This paper develops a novel structure theory for primary ideals in a polynomial ring. We characterize primary ideals in terms of PDE, punctual Hilbert schemes, relative Weyl algebras, and the join construction. Solving the PDE described by a primary ideal amounts to computing Noetherian operators in the sense of Ehrenpreis and Palamodov. We develop new algorithms for this task, and we present efficient implementations.

In this paper, we study the relation among the Hilbert function, Hilbert multiplicity, index of reducibility of an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal, and the irreducible multiplicity under idealization $R\ltimes M$. Some applications to Cohen-Macaulayness and Cohen-Macaulay type of idealization are given.

Abstract:A symmetric ideal is an ideal in a polynomial ring which is stable under all permutations of the variables. In this paper we initiate a global study of zero-dimensional symmetric ideals. By this we mean a geometric study of the invariant Hilbert schemes $\mathrm{Hilb}_{\rho}^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ parametrizing symmetric subschemes of $\mathbb{C}^n$ whose coordinate rings, as $S_n$-modules, are isomorphic to a given representation $\rho$. In the case that $\rho = M^\lambda$ is a permutation module corresponding to certain special types of partitions $\lambda$ of $n$, we prove that $\mathrm{Hilb}_{\rho}^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ is irreducible or even smooth. We also prove irreducibility whenever $\dim \rho \leq 2n$ and the invariant Hilbert scheme is non-empty. In this same range, we classify all homogeneous symmetric ideals and decide which of these define singular points of $\mathrm{Hilb}_{\rho}^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$. A central tool is the combinatorial theory of higher Specht polynomials.

Abstract:This is an expository version of our paper [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1902.07384" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1902.07384">arXiv:1902.07384</a>]. Our aim is to present recent Macaulay2 algorithms for computation of mixed multiplicities of ideals in a Noetherian ring which is either local or a standard graded algebra over a field. These algorithms are based on computation of the equations of multi-Rees algebras of ideals that generalises a result of Cox, Lin and Sosa. Using these equations we propose efficient algorithms for computation of mixed volumes of convex lattice polytopes and sectional Milnor numbers of hypersurfaces with an isolated singularity.

Abstract:In this article we first compare the set of elements in the socle of an ideal of a polynomial algebra over a field K that are not in the ideal itself with Macaulay's inverse systems of such polynomial algebras in a purely combinatorial way for monomial ideals, and then develop some closure operational properties for the related poset . We then derive some algebraic propositions of -graded rings (a natural generalization of the usual -grading where is a monoid) that then have some combinatorial consequences. Interestingly, some of the results from this part that uniformly hold for polynomial rings are always false when the ring is local. We finally delve into some direct computations, in relation to a given term order of the monomials, for general zero-dimensional Gorenstein ideals, and we deduce a few explicit observations and results for the inverse systems from some recent results about socles.

Abstract:We propose an effective method for primary decomposition of symmetric ideals. Let $K[X]=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be the $n$-valuables polynomial ring over a field $K$ and $\mathfrak{S}_n$ the symmetric group of order $n$. We consider the canonical action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on $K[X]$ i.e. $\sigma(f(x_1,\ldots,x_n))=f(x_{\sigma(1)},\ldots,x_{\sigma(n)})$ for $\sigma\in \mathfrak{S}_n$. For an ideal $I$ of $K[X]$, $I$ is called {\em symmetric} if $\sigma(I)=I$ for any $\sigma\in \mathfrak{S}_n$. For a minimal primary decomposition $I=Q_1\cap \cdots \cap Q_r$ of a symmetric ideal $I$, $\sigma(I)=\sigma (Q_1)\cap \cdots \cap \sigma(Q_r)$ is a minimal primary decomposition of $I$ for any $\sigma\in \mathfrak{S}_n$. We utilize this property to compute a full primary decomposition of $I$ efficiently from partial primary components. We investigate the effectiveness of our algorithm by implementing it in the computer algebra system Risa/Asir.

The Multiplicity of Powers of a Class of Non-Square-free Monomial Ideals

Abstract:Let $R = \mathbb{K}[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ be a polynomial ring over a field $\mathbb{K}$, and let $I \subseteq R$ be a monomial ideal of height $h$. We provide a formula for the multiplicity of the powers of $I$ when all the primary ideals of height $h$ in the irredundant minimal primary decomposition of $I$ are irreducible. This is a generalization of \cite[Theorem 1.1]{TV}. Furthermore, we present a formula for the multiplicity of powers of special powers of monomial ideals that satisfy the aforementioned conditions. Here, the $m$-th special power of a monomial ideal refers to the ideal generated by the $m$-th powers of all its minimal generators. Finally, we explicitly provide a formula for the multiplicity of powers of special powers of edge ideals in vertex-weighted oriented graphs using combinatorial properties.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a maximal subring of a ring $T$. In this paper we study relation between some important ideals in the ring extension $R\subseteq T$. In fact, we would like to find some relation between $Nil_*(R)$ and $Nil_*(T)$, $Nil^*(R)$ and $Nil^*(T)$, $J(R)$ and $J(T)$, $Soc({}_RR)$ and $Soc({}_RT)$, and finally $Z({}_RR)$ and $Z({}_RT)$; especially, in certain cases, for example when $T$ is a reduced ring, $R$ (or $T$) is a left Artinian ring, or $R$ is a certain maximal subring of $T$. We show that either $Soc({}_RR)=Soc({}_RT)$ or $(R:T)_r$ (the greatest right ideal of $T$ which is contained in $R$) is a left primitive ideal of $R$. We prove that if $T$ is a reduced ring, then either $Z({}_RT)=0$ or $Z({}_RT)$ is a minimal ideal of $T$, $T=R\oplus Z({}_RT)$, and $(R:T)=(R:T)_l=(R:T)_r=ann_R(Z({}_RT))$. If $T=R\oplus I$, where $I$ is an ideal of $T$, then we completely determine relation between Jacobson radicals, lower nilradicals, upper nilradicals, socle and singular ideals of $R$ and $T$. Finally, we study the relation between previous ideals of $R$ and $T$ when either $R$ or $T$ is a left Artinian ring.

On binomial complete intersections

Abstract:We consider homogeneous binomial ideals $I=(f_1,\ldots,f_n)$ in $K[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$, where $f_i = a_i x_i^{d_i} - b_i m_i$ and $a_i \neq 0$. When such an ideal is a complete intersection, we show that the monomials which are not divisible by $x_i^{d_i}$ for $i=1,\ldots,n$ form a vector space basis for the corresponding quotient, and we describe the Macaulay dual generator in terms of a directed graph that we associate to $I$. These two properties can be seen as a natural generalization of well-known properties for monomial complete intersections. Moreover, we give a description of the radical of the resultant of $I$ in terms of the directed graph.

Abstract:Principal symmetric ideals were recently introduced by Harada, Seceleanu, and Sega, with a focus on their homological properties. They are ideals generated by the orbit of a single polynomial under permutations of variables in a polynomial ring. In this paper we seek to determine when a product of two principal symmetric ideals is principal symmetric and when all the powers of a principal symmetric ideal are again principal symmetric ideals. We characterize the ideals that have the latter property as being generated by polynomials invariant up to a scalar multiple under permutation of variables. Recognizing principal symmetric ideals is an open question for the purpose of which we produce certain obstructions. We also demonstrate that the Hilbert functions of symmetric monomial ideals are not all given by symmetric monomial ideals, in contrast to the non-symmetric case.
