Abstract:An energy functional for the obstacle problem in linear elasticity is obtained as a variational limit of nonlinear elastic energy functionals describing a material body subject to pure traction load under a unilateral constraint representing the rigid obstacle. There exist loads pushing the body against the obstacle, but unfit for the geometry of the whole system body-obstacle, so that the corresponding variational limit turns out to be different from the classical Signorini problem in linear elasticity. However, if the force field acting on the body fulfils an appropriate geometric admissibility condition, we can show coincidence of minima. The analysis developed here provides a rigorous variational justification of the Signorini problem in linear elasticity, together with an accurate analysis of the unilateral constraint.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the effect of a Signorini-type interface condition on the asymptotic behaviour, as $\varepsilon$ tends to zero, of problems posed in $\varepsilon$-periodic domains with inclusions. The Signorini-type condition is expressed in terms of two complementary equalities involving the jump of the solution on the interface and its conormal derivative via a parameter $\gamma$. Our problem models the heat exchange in a medium hosting an $\varepsilon$-periodic array of thermal conductors in presence of impurities distributed on some regions of the interface. Different limit problems are obtained according to different values of $\gamma$.

A note on higher-order and nonlinear limiting approaches for continuously bounds-preserving discontinuous Galerkin methods

Abstract:In (Dzanic, J. Comp. Phys., 508:113010, 2024), a limiting approach for high-order discontinuous Galerkin schemes was introduced which allowed for imposing constraints on the solution continuously (i.e., everywhere within the element). While exact for linear constraint functionals, this approach only imposed a sufficient (but not the minimum necessary) amount of limiting for nonlinear constraint functionals. This short note shows how this limiting approach can be extended to allow exactness for general nonlinear quasiconcave constraint functionals through a nonlinear limiting procedure, reducing unnecessary numerical dissipation. Some examples are shown for nonlinear pressure and entropy constraints in the compressible gas dynamics equations, where both analytic and iterative approaches are used.

Abstract:The thin obstacle problem or $n$-dimensional Signorini problem is a classical variational problem arising in several applications, starting with its first introduction in elasticity theory. The vast literature concerns mostly quadratic energies, whereas only partial results have been proved in the nonlinear case. In this paper we consider the thin boundary obstacle problem for a general class of nonlineraities and we prove the optimal $C^{1, \frac{1}{2}}$-regularity of the solutions in any space dimension.

Abstract:In a three-dimensional bounded domain $\Omega$ we consider the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for a barotropic fluid with general non-linear density dependent viscosities and no-slip boundary conditions. A nonlinear drag term is added to the momentum equation. We establish two conditional Kato-type criteria for the convergence of the weak solutions to such a system towards the strong solution of the compressible Euler system when the viscosity coefficient and the drag term parameter tend to zero.

Abstract:Given a bounded open set Ω ⊂ R n , we study sequences of quadratic functionals on the Sobolev space H 0 1 ( Ω ) , perturbed by sequences of bounded linear functionals. We prove that their Γ -limits, in the weak topology of H 0 1 ( Ω ) , can always be written as the sum of a quadratic functional, a linear functional, and a non-positive constant. The classical theory of G - and H -convergence completely characterises the quadratic and linear parts of the Γ -limit and shows that their coefficients do not depend on Ω . The constant, which instead depends on Ω and will be denoted by − ν ( Ω ) , plays an important role in the study of the limit behaviour of the energies of the solutions. The main result of this paper is that, passing to a subsequence, we can prove that ν coincides with a non-negative Radon measure on a sufficiently large collection of bounded open sets Ω . Moreover, we exhibit an example that shows that the previous result cannot be obtained for every bounded open set. The specific form of this example shows that the compactness theorem for the localisation method in Γ -convergence cannot be easily improved.

Abstract:We consider the Rosenau equation, which contains nonlinear dispersive effects. We prove that as the diffusion parameter tends to zero, the solutions of the dispersive equation converge to discontinuous weak solution of the Burgers equation. The proof relies on deriving suitable a priori estimates together with an application of the compensated compactness method in the L^p setting.

Abstract:We consider the initial-boundary value problem in the halfspace for the system of equations of ideal Magneto-Hydrodynamics with a perfectly conducting wall boundary condition. We show the convergence of solutions to the solution of the equations of incompressible MHD as the Mach number goes to zero. Because of the characteristic boundary, where a loss of regularity in the normal direction to the boundary may occur, the convergence is shown in suitable anisotropic Sobolev spaces which take account of the singular behavior at the boundary.

Abstract:We prove the existence of a global solution to Signorini's problem for the localized viscoelastic Bresse beam model (circular arc) with continuous and discontinuous constitutive laws. We show that when the constitutive law is continuous, the solution decays exponentially to zero, and when the constitutive law is discontinuous the solution decays only polynomially to zero. The method we use for proving our result is different the others already used in Signorini's problem and is based on approximations through a hybrid model. Also, we present some numerical results using discrete approximations in time and space, based on the finite element method on the spatial variable and the implicit Newmark method to the discretized the temporal variable. Abstract:It is showed that, as the Mach number goes to zero, the weak solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space with general initial data converges to the strong solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations as long as the later exists. The proof of the result relies on the new modulated energy functional and the Strichartz's estimate of linear wave equation.
The repulsion property in nonlinear elasticity and a numerical scheme to circumvent it

Abstract:For problems in the calculus of cariations that exhibit the Lavrentiev phenomenon, it is known that the \textit{repulsion property} holds, that is, if one approximates the global minimizer in these problems by smooth functions, then the approximate energies will blow up. Thus standard numerical schemes, like the finite element method, may fail when applied directly to these type of problems. In this paper we prove that the repulsion property holds for variational problems in three dimensional elasticity that exhibit cavitation. In addition we propose a numerical scheme that circumvents the repulsion property, which is an adaptation of the Modica and Mortola functional for phase transitions in liquids, in which the phase function is coupled to the mechanical part of the stored energy functional, via the determinant of the deformation gradient. We show that the corresponding approximations by this method satisfy the lower bound $\Gamma$--convergence property in the multi-dimensional non--radial case. The convergence to the actual cavitating minimizer is established for a spherical body, in the case of radial deformations, and for the case of an elastic fluid without assuming radial symmetry.

Quantitative stability of Sobolev inequalities on compact Riemannian manifolds

Abstract:We study quantitative stability results for different classes of Sobolev inequalities on general compact Riemannian manifolds. We prove that, up to constants depending on the manifold, a function that nearly saturates a critical Sobolev inequality is quantitatively $W^{1,2}$-close to a non-empty set of extremal functions, provided that the corresponding optimal Sobolev constant satisfies a suitable strict bound. The case of sub-critical Sobolev inequalities is also covered. Finally, we discuss degenerate phenomena in our quantitative controls.

Abstract:The work addresses a singular limit for a rotating compressible Euler system in the low Mach number and low Rossby number regime. Based on the concept of dissipative measure-valued solution, the quasi-geostrophic system is identified as the limit problem in the case of ill-prepared initial data. The ill-prepared initial data will cause rapidly oscillating acoustic waves. Using dispersive estimates of Strichartz type, the effect of the acoustic waves in the asymptotic limit is eliminated.

Abstract:We consider a family of three-dimensional stiffened plates whose dimensions are scaled through different powers of a small parameter $\varepsilon$. The plate and the stiffener are assumed to be linearly elastic, isotropic, and homogeneous. By means of $\Gamma$-convergence, we study the asymptotic behavior of the three-dimensional problems as the parameter $\varepsilon$ tends to zero. For different relative values of the powers of the parameter $\varepsilon$, we show how the interplay between the plate and the stiffener affects the limit energy. We derive twenty-three limit problems.

Abstract:We introduce an explicit invariant-region-preserving limiter applied to DG methods for compressible Euler equations. The invariant region considered consists of positivity of density and pressure and a maximum principle of a specific entropy. The modified polynomial by the limiter preserves the cell average, lies entirely within the invariant region, and does not destroy the high order of accuracy for smooth solutions, as long as the cell average stays away from the boundary of the invariant region. Numerical tests are presented to illustrate the properties of the limiter. In particular, the tests on Riemann problems show that the limiter helps to damp the oscillations near discontinuities.

Abstract:We study the quasistatic evolution of a linear peridynamic Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic material. More specifically, we consider the gradient flow of a nonlocal elastic energy with respect to a nonlocal viscous dissipation. Following an evolutionary $\Gamma$-convergence approach, we prove that the solutions of the nonlocal problem converge to the solution of the local problem, when the peridynamic horizon tends to $0$, that is, in the nonlocal-to-local limit.

Abstract:We present a convergence result from nonlocal to local behavior for a system of nonlocal balance laws. The velocity field of the underlying conservation laws is diagonal. In contrast, the coupling to the remaining balance laws involves a nonlinear right-hand side that depends on the solution, nonlocal term, and other factors. The nonlocal operator integrates the density around a specific spatial point, which introduces nonlocality into the problem. Inspired by multi-lane traffic flow modeling and lane-changing, the nonlocal kernel is discontinuous and only looks downstream. In this paper, we prove the convergence of the system to the local entropy solutions when the nonlocal operator (chosen to be of an exponential type for simplicity) converges to a Dirac distribution. Numerical illustrations that support the main results are also presented.

Abstract:We obtain existence and conormal Sobolev regularity of strong solutions to the 3D compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes system on the half-space with a Navier boundary condition, over a time that is uniform with respect to the viscosity parameters when these are small. These solutions then converge globally and strongly in $L^2$ towards the solution of the compressible isentropic Euler system when the viscosity parameters go to zero.
