Abstract:We analyze multitrace random matrix models with the help of the saddle point approximation and we introduce a multitrace term of type $-c_1c_3$ to the action. We obtain the numerical phase diagram of the model, with a stable asymmetric phase and the triple point. Furthermore, we examine response functions in this model.

Abstract:We introduce two families of random tridiagonal block matrices for which the joint eigenvalue distributions can be computed explicitly. These distributions are novel within random matrix theory, and exhibit interactions among eigenvalue coordinates beyond the typical mean-field log-gas type. Leveraging the matrix models, we go on to describe the point process limits at the edges of the spectrum in two ways: through certain random differential operators, and also in terms of coupled systems of diffusions. Along the way we establish several algebraic identities involving sums of Vandermonde determinant products.

Abstract:The (classical) truncated moment problem, extensively studied by Curto and Fialkow, asks to characterize when a finite sequence of real numbers indexes by words in commuting variables can be represented with moments of a positive Borel measure $\mu$ on $\mathbb R^n$. In \cite{BK12} Burgdorf and Klep introduced its tracial analog, the truncated tracial moment problem, which replaces commuting variables with non-commuting ones and moments of $\mu$ with tracial moments of matrices. In the bivariate quartic case, where indices run over words in two variables of degree at most four, every sequence with a positive definite $7\times 7$ moment matrix $\mathcal M_2$ can be represented with tracial moments \cite{BK10,BK12}. In this article the case of singular $\mathcal M_2$ is studied. For $\mathcal M_2$ of rank at most 5 the problem is solved completely; namely, concrete measures are obtained whenever they exist and the uniqueness question of the minimal measures is answered. For $\mathcal M_2$ of rank 6 the problem splits into four cases, in two of which it is equivalent to the feasibility problem of certain linear matrix inequalities. Finally, the question of a flat extension of the moment matrix $\mathcal M_2$ is addressed. While this is the most powerful tool for solving the classical case, it is shown here by examples that, while sufficient, flat extensions are mostly not a necessary condition for the existence of a measure in the tracial case.

Abstract:The Katz-Sarnak philosophy states that statistics of zeros of $L$-function families near the central point as the conductors tend to infinity agree with those of eigenvalues of random matrix ensembles as the matrix size tends to infinity. While numerous results support this conjecture, S. J. Miller observed that for finite conductors, very different behavior can occur for zeros near the central point in elliptic curve families. This led to the excised model of Dueñez, Huynh, Keating, Miller, and Snaith, whose predictions for quadratic twists of a given elliptic curve are beautifully fit by the data. The key ingredients are relating the discretization of central values of the $L$-functions to excising matrices based on the value of the characteristic polynomials at 1 and using lower order terms (in statistics such as the one-level density and pair-correlation) to adjust the matrix size. We discuss recent successes by the authors in extending this model to a family of quadratic twists of finite conductor of a given holomorphic cuspidal newform of level an odd prime level. In particular, we predict very little repulsion for forms with weight greater than 2.

Analytic trajectory bootstrap for matrix models

Abstract:We revisit the large $N$ two-matrix model with $\text{Tr}[A,B]^2$ interaction and quartic potentials by the analytic trajectory bootstrap, where $A$ and $B$ represent the two matrices. In the large $N$ limit, we can focus on the single trace moments associated with the words composed of the letters $A$ and $B$. Analytic continuations in the lengths of the words and subwords lead to analytic trajectories of single trace moments and intriguing intersections of different trajectories. Inspired by the one-cut solutions of one-matrix models, we propose some simple ansatzes for the singularity structure of the two-matrix generating functions and the corresponding single trace moments. Together with the self-consistent constraints from the loop equations, we determine the free parameters in the ansatzes and obtain highly accurate solutions for the two-matrix model at a low computational cost. For a given length cutoff $L_\text{max}$, our results are within and more accurate than the positivity bounds from the relaxation method, such as about 6-digit accuracy for $L_\text{max}=18$. The convergence pattern suggests that we achieve about $8$-digit accuracy for $L_\text{max}=22$. As the singularity structure is closely related to the eigenvalue distributions, we further present the results for various types of eigenvalue densities. In the end, we study the symmetry breaking solutions using more complicated ansatzes.

Abstract:We establish the asymptotic expansion in matrix models with a confining, off-critical potential in the regime where the support of the equilibrium measure is a finite union of segments. We first address the case where the filling fractions of these segments are fixed and show the existence of a expansion. We then study the asymptotics of the sum over the filling fractions to obtain the full asymptotic expansion for the initial problem in the multi-cut regime. In particular, we identify the fluctuations of the linear statistics and show that they are approximated in law by the sum of a Gaussian random variable and an independent Gaussian discrete random variable with oscillating center. Fluctuations of filling fractions are also described by an oscillating discrete Gaussian random variable. We apply our results to study the all-order small dispersion asymptotics of solutions of the Toda chain associated with the one Hermitian matrix model ( ) as well as orthogonal ( ) and skew-orthogonal ( ) polynomials outside the bulk.

A strange five vertex model and multispecies ASEP on a ring

Abstract:We revisit the problem of constructing the stationary states of the multispecies asymmetric simple exclusion process on a one-dimensional periodic lattice. Central to our approach is a quantum oscillator weighted five vertex model which features a strange weight conservation distinct from the conventional one. Our results clarify the interrelations among several known results and refine their derivations. For instance, the stationary probability derived from the multiline queue construction by Martin (2020) and Corteel--Mandelshtam--Williams (2022) is identified with the partition function of a three-dimensional system. The matrix product operators by Prolhac--Evans--Mallick (2009) acquire a natural diagrammatic interpretation as corner transfer matrices (CTM). The origin of their recursive tensor structure, as questioned by Aggarwal--Nicoletti--Petrov (2023), is revealed through the CTM diagrams. Finally, the derivation of the Zamolodchikov--Faddeev algebra by Cantini--de Gier--Wheeler (2015) is made intrinsic by elucidating its precise connection to a solution to the Yang--Baxter equation originating from quantum group representations.

Abstract:Random noncommutative geometry can be seen as a Euclidean path-integral approach to the quantization of the theory defined by the Spectral Action in noncommutative geometry (NCG). With the aim of investigating phase transitions in random NCG of arbitrary dimension, we study the non-perturbative Functional Renormalization Group for multimatrix models whose action consists of noncommutative polynomials in Hermitian and anti-Hermitian matrices. Such structure is dictated by the Spectral Action for the Dirac operator in Barrett's spectral triple formulation of fuzzy <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://spaces.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> present mathematically rigorous treatment puts forward "coordinate-free" language that might be useful also elsewhere, all the more so because our approach holds for general multimatrix models. The toolkit is a noncommutative calculus on the free algebra that allows to describe the generator of the renormalization group flow -- a noncommutative Laplacian introduced here -- in terms of Voiculescu's cyclic gradient and Rota-Sagan-Stein noncommutative derivative. We explore the algebraic structure of the Functional Renormalization Group Equation and, as an application of this formalism, we find the $\beta$-functions, identify the fixed points in the large-$N$ limit and obtain the critical exponents of $2$-dimensional geometries in two different signatures.

Structured random matrices and cyclic cumulants: A free probability approach

Abstract:We introduce a new class of large structured random matrices characterized by four fundamental properties which we discuss. We prove that this class is stable under matrix-valued and pointwise non-linear operations. We then formulate an efficient method, based on an extremization problem, for computing the spectrum of subblocks of such large structured random matrices. We present different proofs -- combinatorial or algebraic -- of the validity of this method, which all have some connection with free probability. We illustrate this method with well known examples of unstructured matrices, including Haar randomly rotated matrices, as well as with the example of structured random matrices arising in the quantum symmetric simple exclusion process. tured random matrices arising in the quantum symmetric simple exclusion process.

Abstract:We use Monte Carlo simulations and tensor network methods to study a classical monomer-dimer model on the square lattice with a hole (monomer) fugacity $z$, an aligning dimer-dimer interaction $u$ that favors columnar order, and an attractive dimer-dimer interaction $v$ between two adjacent dimers that lie on the same principal axis of the lattice. The Monte Carlo simulations of finite size systems rely on our grand-canonical generalization of the dimer worm algorithm, while the tensor network computations are based on a uniform matrix product ansatz for the eigenvector of the row-to-row transfer matrix that work directly in the thermodynamic limit. The phase diagram has nematic, columnar order and fluid phases, and a nonzero temperature multicritical point at which all three meet. For any fixed $v/u < \infty$, we argue that this multicritical point continues to be located at a nonzero hole fugacity $z_{\rm mc}(v/u) > 0$; our numerical results confirm this theoretical expectation but find that $z_{\rm mc}(v/u) \to 0$ very rapidly as $v/u \to \infty$. Our numerical results also confirm the theoretical expectation that the corresponding multicritical behavior is in the universality class of the four-state Potts multicritical point on critical line of the two-dimensional Ashkin-Teller model.

Abstract:In this paper we construct cumulants for stable random matrix models with single trace interactions of arbitrarily high even order. We obtain explicit and convergent expansions for the cumulants. We show that any cumulant is an analytic function inside a cardioid domain in the complex plane and we prove their Borel-LeRoy summability at the origin of the coupling constant. Our proof is uniform in the external variables.

Abstract:We consider products of the matrices associated with the Szegő recursion from the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and show that under suitable assumptions, their norms grow exponentially in the number of factors. In the language of dynamical systems, this result expresses a uniform hyperbolicity statement. We present two applications of this result. On the one hand, we identify explicitly the almost sure spectrum of extended CMV matrices with non-negative random Verblunsky coefficients. On the other hand, we show that no Ising model in one dimension exhibits a phase transition. Also, in the case of dynamically generated interaction couplings, we describe a gap labeling theorem for the Lee-Yang zeros in the thermodynamic limit.

Abstract:The problem of counting the $\mathbb{F}_q$-valued points of a variety has been well-studied from algebro-geometric, topological, and combinatorial perspectives. We explore a combinatorially flavored version of this problem studied by Anzis et al. (2018), which is similar to work of Kontsevich, Elkies, and Haglund. Anzis et al. considered the question: what is the probability that the determinant of a Jacobi-Trudi matrix vanishes if the variables are chosen uniformly at random from a finite field? They gave a formula for various partitions such as hooks, staircases, and rectangles. We give a formula for partitions whose parts form an arithmetic progression, verifying and generalizing one of their conjectures. More generally, we compute the probability of the determinant vanishing for a class of matrices (``multislant matrices'') made of Toeplitz blocks with certain properties. We furthermore show that the determinant of a skew Jacobi-Trudi matrix is equidistributed across the finite field if the skew partition is a ribbon.

Abstract:Economic and ecological models can be extremely complex, with a large number of agents/species each featuring multiple interacting dynamical quantities. In an attempt to understand the generic stability properties of such systems, we define and study an interesting new matrix ensemble with extensive correlations, generalising the elliptic ensemble. We determine analytically the boundary of its eigenvalue spectrum in the complex plane, as a function of the correlations determined by the model at hand. We solve numerically our equations in several cases of interest, and show that the resulting spectra can take a surprisingly wide variety of shapes.

Abstract:Random matrix models consisting of normal matrices, defined by the sole constraint [N†,N]=0, will be explored. It is shown that cubic eigenvalue repulsion in the complex plane is universal with respect to the probability distribution of matrices. The density of eigenvalues, all correlation functions, and level spacing statistics are calculated. Normal matrix models offer more probability distributions amenable to analytical analysis than complex matrix models where only a model with a Gaussian distribution is solvable. The statistics of numerically generated eigenvalues from Gaussian distributed normal matrices are compared to the analytic results obtained and agreement is seen.
