Abstract:In this paper, we prove a quantitative version of the comparison result for solutions to first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations proved in \cite{GN}. The key role is played by quantitative versions of the Pólya-Szeg\H o inequality and of the Hardy-Littlewood inequality.

A quantitative result for the $k$-Hessian equation

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a symmetrization with respect to mixed volumes of convex sets, for which a Pólya-Szegö type inequality holds. We improve the Pólya-Szegö for the $k$-Hessian integral in a quantitative way, and, with similar arguments, we show a quantitative inequality for the comparison proved by Tso for solutions to the $k$-Hessian equation. As an application of the first result we prove a quantitative version of the Faber-Krahn and Saint-Venant inequalities for these equations.

Abstract:We provide some new integral estimates for solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi equations and we discuss several consequences, ranging from $L^p$-rates of convergence for the vanishing viscosity approximation to regularizing effects for the Cauchy problem in the whole Euclidean space and Liouville-type theorems. Our approach is based on duality techniques à la Evans and a careful study of advection-diffusion equations. The optimality of the results is discussed by several examples.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new method of proof of Hardy type inequalities for two-dimensional quantum Hamiltonians with a magnetic field of finite flux. Our approach gives a quantitative lower bound on the best constant in these inequalities both for Schrödinger and Pauli operators. Pauli operators with Aharonov-Bohm magnetic field are discussed as well.

Abstract:In this article, we consider fully nonlinear, possibly degenerate, parabolic equations associated with Ventcell boundary conditions in bounded or unbounded, smooth domains. We first analyze the exact form of such boundary conditions in general domains in order that the notion of viscosity solutions make sense. Then we prove general comparison results under natural assumptions on the nonlinearities, assuming only that the equation is either coercive (first-order case) or strictly elliptic (second-order case) in the normal direction in a neighborhood of the boundary. Our method is inspired by the ``twin blow-up method'' of Forcadel-Imbert-Monneau and ideas of Lions-Souganidis which we extend to the framework of Ventcell boundary conditions.

A comparison principle based on couplings of partial integro-differential operators

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a comparison principle for viscosity solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ), -Bellman (HJB), and -Isaacs (HJI) equations for general classes of partial integro-differential operators. Our approach innovates in three ways: (1) We reinterpret the classical doubling-of-variables method in the context of second-order equations by casting the Ishii-Crandall Lemma into a test function framework. This adaptation allows us to effectively handle non-local integral operators, such as those associated with Lévy processes. (2) We translate the key estimate on the difference of Hamiltonians in terms of an adaptation of the probabilistic notion of couplings, providing a unified approach that applies to differential, difference, and integral operators. (3) We strengthen the sup-norm contractivity resulting from the comparison principle to one that encodes continuity in the strict topology. We apply our theory to a variety of examples, in particular, to second-order differential operators and, more generally, generators of spatially inhomogeneous Lévy processes.

Abstract:Comparison estimates are an important technical device in the study of regularity problems for quasilinear possibly degenerate elliptic and parabolic equations. Such tools have been employed indispensably in many papers of Mingione, Duzaar-Mingione, and Kuusi-Mingione, etc. on certain measure datum problems to obtain pointwise bounds for solutions and their full or fractional derivatives in terms of appropriate linear or nonlinear potentials. However, a comparison estimate for $p$-Laplace type elliptic equations with measure data is still unavailable in the strongly singular case $1< p\leq \frac{3n-2}{2n-1}$, where $n\geq 2$ is the dimension of the ambient space. This issue will be completely resolved in this work by proving a comparison estimate in a slightly larger range $1<p<3/2$. Applications include a `sublinear' Poincaré type inequality, pointwise bounds for solutions and their derivatives by Wolff's and Riesz's potentials, respectively. Some global pointwise and weighted estimates are also obtained for bounded domains, which enable us to treat a quasilinear Riccati type equation with possibly sublinear growth in the gradient.

Abstract:We prove a comparison result for viscosity solutions of second order parabolic partial differential equations in the Wasserstein space. The comparison is valid for semisolutions that are Lipschitz continuous in the measure in a Fourier-Wasserstein metric and uniformly continuous in time. The class of equations we consider is motivated by Mckean-Vlasov control problems with common noise and filtering problems. The proof of comparison relies on a novel version of Ishii's lemma, which is tailor-made for the class of equations we consider.

Abstract:This work is devoted to the study of a Liouville comparison principle for entire weak solutions of quasilinear differential inequalities of the form $A(u) + |u|^{q-1}u \leq A(v) + |v|^{q-1}v$ on ${\Bbb R}^n$, where $n\geq 1$, $q$ is positive, and the operator $A(w)$ belongs to a class of the so-called $\alpha$-monotone operators. Typical examples of such operators are the $p$-Laplacian and its well-known modifications. The results improve and supplement those in [1].

Abstract:In this paper, we study the integrability of the non-negative solutions to the Euler-Lagrange equations associated with Weighted Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev (HLS) inequality. We obtain the optimal integrability for the solutions. The integrability and the radial symmetry (which we derived in our earlier paper) are the key ingredients to study the growth rate at the center and the decay rate at infinity of the solutions. These are also the essential properties needed to classify all non-negative solutions. Some simple generalizations are also provided here.

Abstract:Based on a variant of frequency function, we improve the vanishing order of solutions for Schrödinger equations which describes quantitative behavior of strong uniqueness continuation property. For the first time, we investigate the quantitative uniqueness of higher order elliptic equations and show the vanishing order of solutions. Furthermore, strong unique continuation is established for higher order elliptic equations using this variant of frequency function.

Abstract:In this short note we provide a quantitative version of the classical Runge approximation property for second order elliptic operators. This relies on quantitative unique continuation results and duality arguments. We show that these estimates are essentially optimal. As a model application we provide a new proof of the result from \cite{F07}, \cite{AK12} on stability for the Calderón problem with local data.

Abstract:We study nonnegative solutions to the following Hardy-Hénon type equations involving higher order fractional Laplacians $$ (-\Delta)^\sigma u = |x|^{-\alpha}u^{p} ~~~~~~ \mbox{in} ~ \mathbb{R}^n \backslash \{0\} $$ with a possible singularity at the origin, where $\sigma$ is a real number satisfying $0 < \sigma < n/2$, $-\infty < \alpha < 2\sigma$ and $p>1$. By a more direct approach without using the super poly-harmonic properties, we establish an integral representation for nonnegative solutions to the above higher order fractional equations whether the singularity $\{0\}$ is removable or not. As the first application, we prove an optimal Liouville-type theorem for the above equations with removable singularity for all $\sigma \in (0, n/2)$ when $$ 1 < p < p_{\sigma,\alpha}^*:=\frac{n+2\sigma -2\alpha}{n-2\sigma} ~~~ \mbox{and} ~~~ -\infty < \alpha < 2\sigma. $$ This, in particular, covers a gap occurring for non-integral $\sigma \in (1, n/2)$ and $\alpha \in (0, 2\sigma)$ in the current literature. As the second application, we show the radial symmetry of solutions in the critical case or in the case when the origin is a non-removable singularity. Such radial symmetry would be useful in studying the singular Yamabe-type problems.

Abstract:We investigate the quantitative uniqueness of solutions to parabolic equations with lower order terms on compact smooth manifolds. Quantitative uniqueness is a quantitative form of strong unique continuation property. We characterize quantitative uniqueness by the rate of vanishing. We can obtain the vanishing order of solutions by $C^{1, 1}$ norm of the potential functions, as well as the $L^\infty$ norm of the coefficient functions. Some quantitative Carleman estimates and three cylinder inequalities are established.

Abstract:Our purpose is to generalize some recent comparison principles for operators driven by p-Laplacian to a wide class of quasilinear equations including (p, q)-Laplacian. It turns out, in particular, that adding a q-Laplacian to p-Laplacian allows to weaken the assumptions needed on the Hamiltonian of lower order terms. The results are specialized in the case that the Hamiltonian has at most polynomial growth in the gradient with coefficients depending on x and u.
