Abstract:This paper is concerned with a comparison principle for viscosity solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ), -Bellman (HJB), and -Isaacs (HJI) equations for general classes of partial integro-differential operators. Our approach innovates in three ways: (1) We reinterpret the classical doubling-of-variables method in the context of second-order equations by casting the Ishii-Crandall Lemma into a test function framework. This adaptation allows us to effectively handle non-local integral operators, such as those associated with Lévy processes. (2) We translate the key estimate on the difference of Hamiltonians in terms of an adaptation of the probabilistic notion of couplings, providing a unified approach that applies to differential, difference, and integral operators. (3) We strengthen the sup-norm contractivity resulting from the comparison principle to one that encodes continuity in the strict topology. We apply our theory to a variety of examples, in particular, to second-order differential operators and, more generally, generators of spatially inhomogeneous Lévy processes.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the comparison principle of viscosity solutions, especially for a class of generalized partial integro - differential operators of Hamilton - Jacobi (HJ), Hamilton - Jacobi - Bellman (HJB) and Hamilton - Jacobi - Isaacs (HJI) equations. Specifically, the author aims to innovatively deal with the following aspects: 1. **Treatment of non - local integral operators**: Traditional methods are difficult to effectively handle non - local integral operators (for example, operators related to Lévy processes). In this paper, by reinterpreting the classical method of doubling of variables as the Ishii - Crandall lemma in the test function framework, it is possible to handle these non - local operators. 2. **Unified probabilistic coupling method**: By introducing the concept of probabilistic coupling, the author provides a unified method to handle the difference estimates between differential, difference and integral operators. This enables it to be more widely applied to different types of operators. 3. **Continuity under strict topology**: The author not only proves the standard comparison principle, but also strengthens the result to encode continuity under strict topology (or called mixed topology). This means that they further extend from the standard sup - norm contractivity result to the strict comparison principle. To achieve the above goals, the author proposes three main innovations: - **Test function framework**: By constructing two test functions \(\phi_{\alpha}\) and \(\psi_{\alpha}\) to connect sub - solutions and super - solutions, and coupling them through the matrix \(C\). - **Coupling method**: Use synchronous coupling (also known as comonotonic coupling) to uniformly handle different types of operators. - **Strict comparison principle**: By introducing the Lyapunov function, directly establish the strict comparison principle to ensure the continuity of the solution mapping under strict topology. These innovations enable this paper to handle viscosity solutions of partial integro - differential equations in a broader context and provide new tools and perspectives for subsequent research.
