Abstract:This paper will discuss new ways of representing integers raised to integral powers as sums of smaller integral powers. The idea of expressing high powers in terms of lower powers turns out to have many interesting consequences and useful applications, some of the most prominent of which are the subject of consideration in this work.

Abstract:Which integers can be written as a quotient of sums of distinct powers of three? We outline our first steps toward an answer to this question, beginning with a necessary and almost sufficient condition. Then we discuss an algorithm that indicates whether it is possible to represent a given integer as a quotient of sums of distinct powers of three. When the given integer is representable, this same algorithm generates all possible representations. We develop a categorization of representations based on their connections to $0,1$-polynomials and give a complete description of the types of representations for all integers up to 364. Finally, we discuss in detail the representations of 7, 22, 34, 64, and 100, as well as some infinite families of integers.

Abstract:In this article, we present the integral representations of the power series diagonals. Such representations are obtained by lowering the integration multiplicity for the previously known integral representation. The procedure is carried out within the framework of Leray's residue theory. The concept of the amoeba of the complex analytical hypersurface plays an essential role in the construction of new integral representations.

Abstract:It is well known that every positive integer N can be written as the sum of non-consecutive powers of the golden ratio. We prove that the non-positive powers, together with the parity of the first positive power, can determine the positive integer. We give an explicit formula for N in terms of the above information.

Abstract:A representation number is a function which expresses the number of ways an integer can be written as a sum of elements of chosen sets. One of the oldest number-theoretic results on representation numbers is Fermat's theorem which says that an odd prime can be written as a sum of two squares in exactly $0$ or $2$ ways (if order of summands is important). In this dissertation, we discuss a selection of methods from modern analytic number theory and apply them to study asymptotics of certain representation numbers. In particular, we work through an argument in the recent paper "The multiplication table constant and sums of two squares" by Granville, Sabuncu and Sedunova to obtain upper bounds on higher moments of the number of ways of writing $n$ as the sum of a square and a square of a prime. We then use the method from the paper to obtain new results on moments of representation numbers where ``prime'' is replaced by ``sum of two squares''.

Abstract:We have established novel integral representations of the Riemann zeta-function and Dirichlet eta-function based on powers of trigonometric functions and digamma function, and then use these representations to find close forms of Laurent series expansions of these same powers of trigonometric functions and digamma function. The so obtained series can be used to find numerous summation rules for certain values of the Riemann zeta and related functions and numbers, such as e.g. Bernoulli and Euler numbers.

Abstract:In this paper we study representations of natural numbers by weighted sums of powers and pose some new conjectures in this direction.For example,we show that there are essentially only 9 polynomials of the form awh + bxi + cyj + dzk with a,b,c,d positive integers,h,i,j,k ∈ {2,3,4,...} and at most one of h,i,j,k equal to two,for which it seems that each n ∈ N ={0,1,2,...} can be written as awh+bxi+cyj+dzk with w,x,y,z ∈ N.One of our conjectures states that {f(w,x,y,z):w,x,y,z ∈ N} =N whenever f(w,x,y,z) is among the 9 polynomials w2 + x3 + 2y3 + cz3 (c =3,4,5,6),w2 + x3 + 2y3 + dz4 (d =1,3,6),2w2 + x3 + 4y3 + z4 and w2 + x3 + y4 + 2z4.We also conjecture that any integer n ＞ 1 can be written as x4 + y3 + z2 + 2k with x,y,z ∈ N and k ∈ {1,2,3,...}.
Parity of the coefficients of certain eta-quotients, III: The case of pure eta-powers

Abstract:We continue a program of investigating the parity of the coefficients of eta-quotients, with the goal of elucidating the parity of the partition function. In this paper, we consider positive integer powers $t$ of the Dedekind eta-function. Previous work and conjectures suggest that arithmetic progressions in which the Fourier coefficients of these functions are even should be numerous. We explicitly identify infinite classes of such progressions modulo prime squares for several values of $t$, and we offer two broad conjectures concerning their existence in general.

Abstract:We present closed forms for several functions that are fundamental in number theory and we explain the method used to obtain them. Concretely, we find formulas for the p-adic valuation, the number-of-divisors function, the sum-of-divisors function, Euler's totient function, the modular inverse, the integer part of the root, the integer part of the logarithm, the multiplicative order and the discrete logarithm. Although these are very complicated, they only involve elementary operations, and to our knowledge no other closed form of this kind is known for the aforementioned functions.

Abstract:In this paper, it is proved that every sufficiently large even integer can be represented as the sum of two squares of primes, two cubes of primes, two biquadrates of primes and 16 powers of 2. Furthermore, there are at least 5.313% odd integers that can be represented as one square of prime, one cube of prime and one biquadrate of prime. This result constitutes a refinement upon that of R. Zhang [8].

Abstract:For integer $k \geq 0$, let $S_k$ denote the sum of the $k$th powers of the first $n$ positive integers $1^k + 2^k + \cdots + n^k$. For any given $k$, the power sum $S_k$ can in principle be determined by differentiating $k$ times (with respect to $x$) the associated exponential generating function $\sum_{k=0}^{\infty}S_k x^k/k!$, and then taking the limit of the resulting differentiated function as $x$ approaches $0$. In this paper, we exploit this method to establish a couple of seemingly novel recurrence relations, one of them involving the even-indexed power sums $S_2, S_4,\ldots, S_{2k}$, and the other the odd-indexed power sums $S_{1}, S_3, \ldots, S_{2k-1}$, with both recurrence relations depending explicitly on the parameter $N = n + \frac{1}{2}$. From this, we obtain a determinantal formula of order $k$ which yields $S_{2k}$ [$S_{2k-1}$] in the Faulhaber form, that is, as an odd [even] polynomial in $N$. As a byproduct, we discover a new determinantal formula for the Bernoulli number $B_{2k}$. Furthermore, we show that $S_{2k}$ and $S_{2k-1}$ can be obtained by taking the corresponding higher order derivatives of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

Abstract:This paper studies power indices based on average representations of a weighted game. If restricted to account for the lack of power of null voters, average representations become coherent measures of voting power, with power distributions being proportional to the distribution of weights in the average representation. This makes these indices representation-compatible, a property not fulfilled by classical power indices. In this paper we introduce two computationally cheaper alternatives to the existing representation-compatible power indices, and study the properties of a family that now comprises four measures.

On the Order of Power Series and the Sum of Square Roots Problem

Abstract:This paper focuses on the study of the order of power series that are linear combinations of a given finite set of power series. The order of a formal power series, known as $\textrm{ord}(f)$, is defined as the minimum exponent of $x$ that has a non-zero coefficient in $f(x)$. Our first result is that the order of the Wronskian of these power series is equivalent up to a polynomial factor, to the maximum order which occurs in the linear combination of these power series. This implies that the Wronskian approach used in (Kayal and Saha, TOCT'2012) to upper bound the order of sum of square roots is optimal up to a polynomial blowup. We also demonstrate similar upper bounds, similar to those of (Kayal and Saha, TOCT'2012), for the order of power series in a variety of other scenarios. We also solve a special case of the inequality testing problem outlined in (Etessami et al., TOCT'2014). In the second part of the paper, we study the equality variant of the sum of square roots problem, which is decidable in polynomial time due to (Blömer, FOCS'1991). We investigate a natural generalization of this problem when the input integers are given as straight line programs. Under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), we show that this problem can be reduced to the so-called ``one dimensional'' variant. We identify the key mathematical challenges for solving this ``one dimensional'' variant.

Abstract:In this short, we study sums of the shape $\sum_{n\leqslant x}{f([x/n])}/{[x/n]},$ where $f$ is Euler totient function $\varphi$, Dedekind function $\Psi$, sum-of-divisors function $\sigma$ or the alternating sum-of-divisors function $\beta.$ We improve previous results when $f=\varphi$ and derive new estimates when $f=\Psi, f=\sigma$ and $f=\beta.$

Abstract:Motivated by the demonstrated potential for their applications in various research areas such as those in mathematical, physical, engineering, and statistical sciences, our main object in this paper is to introduce and investigate a fractional integral operator that contains a certain generalized multi-index Mittag-Leffler function in its kernel. In particular, we establish some interesting expressions for the composition of such well-known fractional integral and fractional derivative operators as (for example) the Riemann-Liouville fractional integral and fractional derivative operators, the Hilfer fractional derivative operator, and the above-mentioned fractional integral operator with the generalized multi-index Mittag-Leffler function in its kernel. The main findings in this paper are shown to generalize the results that were derived earlier by Kilbas et al and Srivastava et al. Finally, in this paper, we derive integral representations for the product of 2 generalized multi-index Mittag-Leffler functions in terms of the familiar Fox-Wright hypergeometric function.
