Abstract:It is well known that every positive integer N can be written as the sum of non-consecutive powers of the golden ratio. We prove that the non-positive powers, together with the parity of the first positive power, can determine the positive integer. We give an explicit formula for N in terms of the above information.

Abstract:We find an interesting relationship between the golden ratio, the Moebius function, the Euler totient function and the natural logarithm - central players in the theory of numbers. A number of identities involving the golden ratio and its reciprocal are proved, including an expression for the base of the natural logarithm. The theorem and corollaries highlight a connection between the golden ratio and the factorization of integers that is not obvious; and display a sort of inverse relationship between the Moebius function and Euler totient function.

Abstract:Let [Formula: see text] be a positive integer, and define [Formula: see text] for [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] denotes the number of distinct prime factors of [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] represents the total number of prime factors of [Formula: see text] (counted with multiplicity). In this paper, we study these two zeta functions and related arithmetical functions. We show that [Formula: see text] which is similar to the known identity [Formula: see text] equivalent to the Prime Number Theorem. For [Formula: see text], we prove that [Formula: see text] We also raise a hypothesis on the parities of [Formula: see text] which implies the Riemann Hypothesis.

Abstract:In this paper, it is proved that every sufficiently large even integer can be represented as the sum of two squares of primes, two cubes of primes, two biquadrates of primes and 16 powers of 2. Furthermore, there are at least 5.313% odd integers that can be represented as one square of prime, one cube of prime and one biquadrate of prime. This result constitutes a refinement upon that of R. Zhang [8].

Abstract:In this paper we study representations of natural numbers by weighted sums of powers and pose some new conjectures in this direction.For example,we show that there are essentially only 9 polynomials of the form awh + bxi + cyj + dzk with a,b,c,d positive integers,h,i,j,k ∈ {2,3,4,...} and at most one of h,i,j,k equal to two,for which it seems that each n ∈ N ={0,1,2,...} can be written as awh+bxi+cyj+dzk with w,x,y,z ∈ N.One of our conjectures states that {f(w,x,y,z):w,x,y,z ∈ N} =N whenever f(w,x,y,z) is among the 9 polynomials w2 + x3 + 2y3 + cz3 (c =3,4,5,6),w2 + x3 + 2y3 + dz4 (d =1,3,6),2w2 + x3 + 4y3 + z4 and w2 + x3 + y4 + 2z4.We also conjecture that any integer n ＞ 1 can be written as x4 + y3 + z2 + 2k with x,y,z ∈ N and k ∈ {1,2,3,...}.
The Average Number of Goldbach Representations and Zero-Free Regions of the Riemann Zeta-Function

Abstract:In this paper, we prove an unconditional form of Fujii's formula for the average number of Goldbach representations and show that the error in this formula is determined by a general zero-free region of the Riemann zeta-function, and vice versa. In particular, we describe the error in the unconditional formula in terms of the remainder in the Prime Number Theorem which connects the error to zero-free regions of the Riemann zeta-function.

Abstract:Let $\beta>1$ be fixed. We consider the $(\frak{b, d})$ numeration system, where the base ${\frak b}=(b_k)_{k\geq 0}$ is a sequence of positive real numbers satisfying $\lim_{k\rightarrow \infty}b_{k+1}/b_k=\beta$, and the set of digits ${\frak d}\ni 0$ is a finite set of nonnegative real numbers with at least two elements. Let $r_{\frak{b, d}}(\lambda)$ denote the number of representations of a given $\lambda\in\mathbb{R}$ by sums $\sum_{k\ge 0}\delta_kb_k$ with $\delta_k$ in ${\frak d}$. We establish upper bounds and asymptotic formulas for $r_{\frak{b,d}}(\lambda)$ and its arbitrary moments, respectively. We prove that the associated zeta function $\zeta_{\frak{b, d}}(s):=\sum_{\lambda>0}r_{\frak{b, d}}(\lambda)\lambda^{-s}$ can be meromorphically continued to the entire complex plane when $b_k=\beta^{k}$, and to the half-plane $\Re(s)>\log_\beta |\frak{d}|-\gamma$ when $b_k=\beta^{k}+O(\beta^{(1-\gamma)k})$, with any fixed $\gamma\in(0,1]$, respectively. We also determine the possible poles, compute the residues at the poles, and locate the trivial zeros of $\zeta_{\frak{b, d}}(s)$ in the regions where it can be extended. As an application, we answer some problems posed by Chow and Slattery on partitions into distinct terms of certain integer sequences.

For representation dimensions coprime to all primes p < n , we construct all irreducible representations of M n by defining a standard form for the matrices of these representations.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:A representation number is a function which expresses the number of ways an integer can be written as a sum of elements of chosen sets. One of the oldest number-theoretic results on representation numbers is Fermat's theorem which says that an odd prime can be written as a sum of two squares in exactly $0$ or $2$ ways (if order of summands is important). In this dissertation, we discuss a selection of methods from modern analytic number theory and apply them to study asymptotics of certain representation numbers. In particular, we work through an argument in the recent paper "The multiplication table constant and sums of two squares" by Granville, Sabuncu and Sedunova to obtain upper bounds on higher moments of the number of ways of writing $n$ as the sum of a square and a square of a prime. We then use the method from the paper to obtain new results on moments of representation numbers where ``prime'' is replaced by ``sum of two squares''.

Abstract:For non-negative integers $a,b,$ and $n$, let $N(a, b; n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ as a sum of squares with coefficients $1$ or $3$ ($a$ of ones and $b$ of threes). Let $N^*(a,b; n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ as a sum of odd squares with coefficients $1$ or $3$ ($a$ of ones and $b$ of threes). We have that $N^*(a,b;8n+a+3b)$ is the number of representations of $n$ as a sum of triangular numbers with coefficients $1$ or $3$ ($a$ of ones and $b$ of threes). It is known that for $a$ and $b$ satisfying $1\leq a+3b \leq 7$, we have $$ N^*(a,b;8n+a+3b)= \frac{2}{2+{a\choose4}+ab} N(a,b;8n+a+3b) $$ and for $a$ and $b$ satisfying $a+3b=8$, we have $$ N^*(a,b;8n+a+3b) = \frac{2}{2+{a\choose4}+ab} \left( N(a,b;8n+a+3b) - N(a,b; (8n+a+3b)/4) \right). %& t(8,0;{n}) = \frac{1}{36} \left( N(8,0;8n+8) - N(8,0;2n+2) \right). \label{eq31_5} $$ Such identities are not known for $a+3b>8$. In this paper, for general $a$ and $b$ with $a+b$ even, we prove asymptotic equivalence of formulas similar to the above, as $n\rightarrow\infty$. One of our main results extends a theorem of Bateman, Datskovsky, and Knopp where the case $b=0$ and general $a$ was considered. Our approach is different from Bateman-Datskovsky-Knopp's proof where the circle method and singular series were used. We achieve our results by explicitly computing the Eisenstein components of the generating functions of $N^*(a,b;8n+a+3b)$ and $N(a,b;8n+a+3b)$. The method we use is robust and can be adapted in studying the asymptotics of other representation numbers with general coefficients.

We use this result to derive an asymptotic formula for the number of triplets $(l,m,n)$ of positive integers such that $l<x$ and $\lfloor{l^\alpha}\rfloor + \lfloor{m^\alpha}\rfloor = \lfloor{n^\alpha}\rfloor$. Furthermore, we prove that the additive energy of the sequence $(\lfloor{n^\alpha}\rfloor)_{n=1}^N$, i.e., the number of quadruples $(n_1,n_2,n_3,n_4)$ of positive integers with $\lfloor{n_1^\alpha}\rfloor+\lfloor{n_2^\alpha}\rfloor=\lfloor{n_3^\alpha}\rfloor+\lfloor{n_4^\alpha}\rfloor$ and $n_1,n_2,n_3,n_4\le N$, is equal to $O_\alpha(N^{4-\alpha})$ when $1<\alpha\le4/3$.

Abstract:Abstract We study the moments of the function that counts the number of representations of an integer as sums of two prime squares. We refine some of the previous arguments and apply the Selberg sieve to get an unconditional upper bound for all moments. We also prove a lower bound for all moments conditional on some generalization of the Green-Tao theorem on linear equations in primes. More precisely, for the fifth moment and onward, we get the expected order of magnitude lower and upper bounds. In addition, we provide some heuristics on the mass function of this representation function.

Abstract:Using combinatorial techniques, we derive a recurrence identity that expresses an exponential power sum with negative powers in terms of another exponential power sum with positive powers. Consequently, we derive a formula for the power sum of the first $k$ natural numbers when the power is odd, which when used in combination with Faulhaber's formula for computing power sums helps us to retrieve the Bernoulli numbers in certain cases.

Abstract:Which integers can be written as a quotient of sums of distinct powers of three? We outline our first steps toward an answer to this question, beginning with a necessary and almost sufficient condition. Then we discuss an algorithm that indicates whether it is possible to represent a given integer as a quotient of sums of distinct powers of three. When the given integer is representable, this same algorithm generates all possible representations. We develop a categorization of representations based on their connections to $0,1$-polynomials and give a complete description of the types of representations for all integers up to 364. Finally, we discuss in detail the representations of 7, 22, 34, 64, and 100, as well as some infinite families of integers.

Abstract:We continue a program of investigating the parity of the coefficients of eta-quotients, with the goal of elucidating the parity of the partition function. In this paper, we consider positive integer powers $t$ of the Dedekind eta-function. Previous work and conjectures suggest that arithmetic progressions in which the Fourier coefficients of these functions are even should be numerous. We explicitly identify infinite classes of such progressions modulo prime squares for several values of $t$, and we offer two broad conjectures concerning their existence in general.
