Abstract:We consider the advection of a passive scalar by a divergence free random Gaussian field, white in time and Hölder regular in space (rough Kraichnan's model), a well established synthetic model of passive scalar turbulence. By studying the evolution of negative Sobolev norms, we show an anomalous regularization effect induced by the dynamics: distributional initial conditions immediately become functions of positive Sobolev regularity.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the anomalous regularization effect caused by turbulent random convection in the Kraichnan passive scalar model. Specifically, the author studied how, in the absence of viscosity, turbulent random convection makes the solution with an initial distribution immediately obtain positive Sobolev regularity. This is contrary to the classical physical intuition, because in the absence of viscosity, one usually does not expect the solution to become smoother. By studying the evolution of the negative Sobolev norm, the author demonstrated the existence of this anomalous regularization effect and proved that for any \( s\in(0, d/2) \), the norm of the solution in the \( \dot{H}^{-s} \) space satisfies the following inequality as it evolves over time: \[ \frac{d}{dt}\mathbb{E}\left[\|\rho(t,\cdot)\|_{\dot{H}^{-s}}^2\right]+K\mathbb{E}\left[\|\rho(t,\cdot)\|_{\dot{H}^{-s + 1-\alpha}}^2\right]\leq C\mathbb{E}\left[\|\rho(t,\cdot)\|_{\dot{H}^{-s}}^2\right] \] where \( \alpha\in(0, 1) \) is a parameter that describes the spatial regularity of the velocity field. This result indicates that even in the absence of viscosity, turbulent random convection can induce a regularization effect, enabling the solution to obtain positive Sobolev regularity in a short time. This finding not only deepens the understanding of passive - scalar turbulence but also provides a new perspective on the regularization mechanism of nonlinear SPDEs.
