Abstract:We give a criterion for separability of subgroups of certain outer automorphism groups. This answers questions of Hagen and Sisto, by strengthening and generalizing a result of theirs on mapping class groups.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:We give a cohomological criterion for existence of outer automorphisms of a semisimple algebraic group over an arbitrary field. This criterion is then applied to the special case of groups of type D_2n over a global field, which completes some of the main results from the paper "Weakly commensurable arithmetic groups and isospectral locally symmetric spaces" (Pub. Math. IHES, 2009) by Prasad and Rapinchuk and gives a new proof of a result from another paper by the same authors.

Abstract:We give elementary proofs of the following two theorems on automorphisms of a finite group G: (1) An automorphism of G is inner if and only if it extends to an automorphism of every finite group containing G. (2) There exists a finite group, whose outer automorphism group is isomorphic to G. The first theorem was proved by Pettet using a graph-theoretical construction of Heineken-Liebeck. A Lie-theoretical proof of the second theorem was sketched by Cornulier in a MathOverflow post. Our proofs are purely group-theoretical.

Abstract:An outer automorphism of a free group is geometric if it can be represented by a homeomorphism of a compact surface. Bestvina and Handel gave an algorithmic characterization of geometric irreducible outer automorphisms using relative train tracks in 1995. The general case of detecting geometric outer automorphisms remained open, with a few partial results appearing subsequently. In this paper we give a complete resolution to the problem: an algorithm that can decide if a general outer automorphism is geometric. The algorithm is constructive and produces a realizing surface homeomorphism if one exists. We make use of advances in train-track theory, in conjunction with the Guirardel core of tree actions and Nielsen-Thurston theory for surfaces.

Abstract:In this work we extend some previously known results on the automorphism group of Schubert varieties. We consider the Schubert conditions which define a Schubert variety. An automorphism of the Grassmannian fixes a Schubert variety contained in it if and only if it fixes certain elements of the flag used to define the Schubert conditions.

Abstract:The aim of this note is twofold. Firstly, we explain in detail Remark 4.1 in \cite{doan-a} by showing that the action of the automorphism group of the second Hirzebruch surface $\mathbb{F}_2$ on itself extends to its formal semi-universal deformation only up to the first order. Secondly, we show that for reductive group actions, the locality of the extended actions on the Kuranishi space constructed in \cite{doan-equivariant} is the best one could expect in general.

Abstract:The main result of this paper is that the outer automorphism group of a free product of finite groups and cyclic groups is semistable at infinity (provided it is one ended) or semistable at each end. In a previous paper, we showed that the group of outer automorphisms of the free product of two nontrivial finite groups with an infinite cyclic group has infinitely many ends, despite being of virtual cohomological dimension two. We also prove that aside from this exception, having virtual cohomological dimension at least two implies the outer automorphism group of a free product of finite and cyclic groups is one ended. As a corollary, the outer automorphism groups of the free product of four finite groups or the free product of a single finite group with a free group of rank two are virtual duality groups of dimension two, in contrast with the above example. Our proof is inspired by methods of Vogtmann, applied to a complex first studied in another guise by Krstić and Vogtmann.

Abstract:We show that, given a continuous action $\alpha$ of a locally compact group $G$ on a factor $M$, the relative commutant $M'\cap(M\rtimes_{\alpha} G)$ is contained in $M\rtimes_{\alpha} H$ where $H$ is the subgroup of elements acting without spectral gap. As a corollary, we answer a question of Marrakchi and Vaes by showing that if $M$ is semifinite and $\alpha_g$ is not approximately inner for all $g\neq 1$, then $M'\cap (M\rtimes_{\alpha} G)=\mathbb{C}$.

Abstract:For any right-angled Artin group $A_{\Gamma}$, Charney--Stambaugh--Vogtmann showed that the subgroup $U^0(A_{\Gamma}) \leq\text{Out}(A_{\Gamma})$ generated by Whitehead automorphisms and inversions acts properly and cocompactly on a contractible space $K_{\Gamma}$. In the present paper we show that any finite subgroup of $U^0(A_{\Gamma})$ fixes a point of $K_{\Gamma}$. This generalizes the fact that any finite subgroup of $\text{Out}(F_n)$ fixes a point of Outer Space, and implies that there are only finitely many conjugacy classes of finite subgroups in $U^0(A_{\Gamma})$.

Abstract:We prove that every locally compact second countable group $G$ arises as the outer automorphism group Out $M$ of a II$_1$ factor, which was so far only known for totally disconnected groups, compact groups and a few isolated examples. We obtain this result by proving that every locally compact second countable group is a centralizer group, a class of Polish groups that arise naturally in ergodic theory and that may all be realized as Out $M$.

Abstract:Motivated by the study of the conjugacy problem for outer automorphism of free groups, we develop the algorithmic theory of the free-by-cyclic group produced by unipotent linearly growing automorphisms of f.g. free groups. We compute canonical splittings of these suspensions as well as their subgroups. We compute their automorphism groups. We show that this class of suspensions is effectively coherent. We solve the mixed Whitehead problem in these suspensions and show that their subgroups all satisfy the Minkowski property, i.e. that torsion in their outer automorphism group is faithfully represented in some computable finite quotients. An application of our results is a solution to the conjugacy problem for outer automorphisms of free groups whose polynomially growing part is unipotent linear.

Abstract:We give a concise presentation for the outer automorphism group of a free product with no free rank, whose factors are non-trivial, freely indecomposable, not infinite cyclic, and pairwise non-isomorphic. This is achieved by considering the action of the outer automorphism group on a particular subcomplex of `Outer Space', which we show to be simply connected. We then apply a theorem of K. S. Brown to extract our presentation.

Abstract:Consider the fundamental group of an arbitrary graph of groups and some root class of groups, i.e., a class containing a nontrivial group and closed under subgroups, extensions, and unrestricted direct products of the form , where and is an isomorphic copy of for each . We provide some criterion for the separability by of a finitely generated abelian subgroup of valid when the group satisfies an analog of the Baumslag filtration condition. This enables us to describe the -separable finitely generated abelian subgroups for the fundamental groups of some graphs of groups with central edge subgroups.

Abstract:We prove that even Coxeter groups, whose Coxeter diagrams contain no (4,4,2) triangles, are conjugacy separable. In particular, this applies to all right-angled Coxeter groups or word hyperbolic even Coxeter groups. For an arbitrary Coxeter group W, we also study the relationship between Coxeter generating sets that give rise to the same collection of parabolic subgroups. As an application we show that if an automorphism of W preserves the conjugacy class of every sufficiently short element then it is inner. We then derive consequences for the outer automorphism groups of Coxeter groups.

Abstract:The class of six-fermion production processes at e+e- colliders comprises very interesting particle reactions, such as the production of top-quark pairs and of Higgs bosons in the intermediate Higgs mass range, the scattering of massive gauge bosons, and triple gauge-boson production. The Monte Carlo event generator LUSIFER is designed for the analysis of such processes. A few illustrating results obtained with LUSIFER are discussed.

Abstract:An $S$-ring (a Schur ring) is said to be separable with respect to a class of groups $\mathcal{K}$ if every algebraic isomorphism from the $S$-ring in question to an $S$-ring over a group from $\mathcal{K}$ is induced by a combinatorial isomorphism. A finite group $G$ is said to be separable with respect to $\mathcal{K}$ if every $S$-ring over $G$ is separable with respect to $\mathcal{K}$. We prove that every abelian group $G$ of order $9p$, where $p$ is a prime, is separable with respect to the class of all finite abelian groups. Modulo previously obtained results, this completes a classification of noncyclic abelian groups of odd order that are separable with respect to the class of all finite abelian groups. Also this implies that the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension of the class of Cayley graphs over $G$ is at most 2.
