Abstract:Magnetic nano/microrotors are passive elements that spin around an axis due to an external rotating field while remaining confined to a close plane. They have been used to date in different applications related to fluid mixing, drug delivery or biomedicine. Here we realize an active version of a magnetic microgyroscope which is simultaneously driven by a photo-activated catalytic reaction and a rotating magnetic field. We investigate the uplift dynamics of this colloidal spinner when it stands up and precesses around its long axis while self-propelling due to the light induced decomposition of hydrogen peroxide in water. By combining experiments with theory, we show that activity emerging from the cooperative action of phoretic and osmotic forces effectively increase the gravitational torque which counteracts the magnetic and viscous ones, and carefully measure its contribution.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore a new type of active magnetic microgyroscope. This device can be driven by both light - activated catalytic reactions and rotating magnetic fields simultaneously. The main problem of the research is how to control the spin and mobility of the microgyroscope by combining these two driving forces, and to study the rising dynamics and self - propelling behavior of these active microgyroscopes in the rotating field. Specifically, the paper explores the following aspects: 1. **Activity and self - propulsion**: How to use light - activated catalytic reactions to make the magnetic microgyroscope generate self - propelling behavior, and how this self - propulsion affects its rotation and motion characteristics. 2. **Rising dynamics**: When the microgyroscope changes from a horizontal state to a vertical state in the rotating magnetic field, what factors affect its rising dynamics, especially the contribution of the light - activated catalytic reaction to this process. 3. **Theoretical model**: How to explain and predict the rising dynamics and self - propelling behavior of the microgyroscope through experimental data and theoretical models, especially when considering the balance of magnetic force, gravity, viscous force and active force. 4. **Application prospects**: The potential application value of this active magnetic microgyroscope in microfluidics, drug delivery and other biotechnology fields. Through these studies, the paper hopes to provide new ideas and methods for the development of micro - and nano - rotors with higher functionality and controllability.
