Abstract:Engineering the shape of nanoparticles has emerged as an effective approach for optimizing their physical/chemical properties. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures with their high surface area/volume ratio have opened up exciting opportunities for developing advanced anisotropic materials and facilitating chemical processes that demand high levels of surface interactions. Although the great potential of low-dimensional 2D nanoswimmers has been suggested by theoretical works, very little experimental study has been undertaken thus far. Here we fabricated a low-dimensional magnetic nanomotor based on discotic barium ferrite nanoplates. We demonstrated that the "fuel-to-motion" behavior and the enhanced diffusion of nanoswimmers are not limited to just OD nanospheres or 1D nanorods but are also applicable to 2D nanoplates. In addition, the 2D nanoswimmers showed excellent catalytic performance in removing molecular and particle stains on cloth likely due to their catalytic activity as well as active locomotion that enhanced microconvection of solution. This study validated a new self-powered nanomachine for cleaning application without any requirement of surfactants or external mechanical energy.
Dipole‐Moment Induced Phototaxis and Fuel‐Free Propulsion of ZnO/Pt Janus Micromotors

Abstract:Light-driven micromotors have stimulated considerate interests due to their potentials in biomedicine, environmental remediation, or serving as the model system for non-equilibrium physics of active matter. Simultaneous control over the motion direction and speed of micro/nanomotors is crucial for their functionality but still difficult since Brownian motion always randomizes the orientations. Here, a highly efficient light-driven ZnO/Pt Janus micromotor capable of aligning itself to illumination direction and exhibiting negative phototaxis at high speeds (up to 32 µm s−1) without the addition of any chemical fuels is developed. A light-triggered self-built electric field parallel to the light illumination exists due to asymmetrical surface chemical reactions induced by the limited penetration depth of light along the illumination. The phototactic motion of the motor is achieved through electrophoretic rotation induced by the asymmetrical distribution of zeta potential on the two hemispheres of the Janus micromotor, into alignment with the electric field. Notably, similar phototactic propulsion is also achieved on TiO2/Pt and CdS/Pt micromotors, which presents explicit proof of extending the mechanism of dipole-moment induced phototactic propulsion in other light-driven Janus micromotors. Finally, active transportation of yeast cells are achieved by the motor, proving its capability in performing complex tasks.

Abstract:A versatile and high‐yield fabrication method is developed for Janus micromotors featuring a spherical tip configuration, achieved through the localized photocuring of SU‐8 on a TiO2 microsphere array. These motors exhibit various functionalities by loading dyes onto the spheres or modifying the composition of tips. Moreover, the efficacy of this method in the production of multifunctional double‐tipped motors is demonstrated. Synthetic Janus micro/nanomotors can efficiently convert ambient energy into asymmetrical self‐propulsive force, overcoming random thermal fluctuations and enabling autonomous migration. Further modifications to the motors can equip them with different functional modules to meet different needs. However, developing a versatile and high‐yield fabrication method for multifunctional Janus micromotors remains challenging. In this study, a modular fabrication approach for micromotors with a particle‐tip structure based on the self‐focusing lithography induced by an array of TiO2 microspheres is presented. By adjusting the tip composition or loading, precise programming of motor functionality is achieved, allowing for various capabilities such as photoredox reaction‐induced propulsion, fluorescent imaging, electric and magnetic navigation. Furthermore, the flexibility of this fabrication method by selectively loading materials onto two tips is demonstrated to achieve multifunctionality within a micromotor unit. This study proposes a straightforward and versatile approach for modular functional micromotors.

Isotropic Hedgehog-Shaped-TiO 2 /Functional-Multiwall-Carbon-Nanotube Micromotors with Phototactic Motility in Fuel-Free Environments

Abstract:Directional motion in response to specific signals is critically important for micro/nanomotors in precise cargo transport, obstacle avoidance, collective control, and complex maneuvers. In this work, a kind of isotropic light-driven micromotor that is made of hedgehog-shaped TiO2 and functional multiwall carbon nanotubes (Hs-TiO2@FCNTs) has been developed. The FCNTs are closely entangled with Hs-TiO2 and form a close-knit matrix on the surface of Hs-TiO2, which facilitates the transfer of electrons from Hs-TiO2 to FCNTs. Due to the high redox potential of Hs-TiO2, excellent electron–hole separation efficiency by the addition of FCNTs, and isotropic morphology of the micromotor, these Hs-TiO2@FCNT micromotors show phototactic and fuel-free propulsion under unidirectional irradiation of UV light. It is the first time to demonstrate isotropic micromotors that are propelled by self-electrophoresis. The isotropy of Hs-TiO2@FCNT micromotors makes them immune to the rotational Brownian diffusion and local flows, exhibiting superior directionality. The motion direction of our micromotors can be precisely tuned by light and a velocity of 8.9 μm/s is achieved under 160 mW/cm2 UV light illumination. Photodegradation of methylene blue and active transportation of polystyrene beads are demonstrated for a proof-of-concept application of our micromotors. Design and Modeling of a Versatile Micro/Nanomotor Propulsion System by Light-Guided Dielectrophoresis

Abstract:To develop active materials that can efficiently respond to external stimuli with designed mechanical motions is one of the major obstacles that have hindered the realization of nanomachines and nanorobots. Here, we propose an innovative working mechanism that allows multifold-translational-motion control of semiconductor micro/nanomotors by AC dielectrophoresis with simple visible-light stimulation. We study the dielectrophoresis forces on semiconducting particles of various geometries in aqueous suspension by modeling with the consideration of both the Maxwell-Wagner relaxation and electrical-double-layer-charging effect. With the obtained understanding, we rationally design a manipulation system that can versatilely transport semiconductor micro/nanomotors and orient them towards desired directions at the same time by tuning the light intensity in an electric field. This research may guide the development of a new type of micro/nanomachine platform with high versatility and control. It is relevant to nanorobotics and nanodevice assembly.

Abstract:This investigation of tuberculosis (TB) treatment regimens in 6 TB hospitals in China showed that only 18% of patients with new cases and 9% of patients with retreatment cases were prescribed standard TB treatment regimens. Adherence to treatment guidelines needs to be improved in TB hospitals to control multidrug-resistant TB in China.

Abstract:Rolled-up catalytic micromotors with tubular structures are fabricated by rolling up strained Pt/Co/Ti metallic nanomembranes through selectively etching of the sacrificial lift off resist (LOR). The rolled-up micromotors present distinct motion behaviors in an organic/aqueous mixture fuel compared to those in a pure aqueous fuel. These self-propelled micromotors can move in pure aqueous fuel with a speed up to several millimeters per second. However, when placed into an organic/aqueous mixture fuel, the micromotors walk on the liquid surface. An intermediate Co layer facilitates a magnetically guided motion of these microtubular motors. The motion at the air–liquid interface can be regulated and suspended by the meniscus-climbing effect. Such meniscus-navigated motion represents a novel approach for regulation of micromotors at the air–liquid interface and opens the door to new and exciting operations of these micro-scale machines.

Abstract:Three designs of light‐driven micromotors are engineered to exhibit multimode swimming behavior that can be excited by switching between UV and visible lights. The recent era of research has been focused on attaining precise and adjustable propulsion modes in micromotors, with remarkable implications in microrobotics and active‐matter applications. This study introduces a novel design of rod‐shaped micromotors featuring light‐driven motion and wavelength‐dependent multimodal swimming behavior. The micromotors are fabricated through the Glancing Angle Deposition (GLAD) technique, which offers a flexible approach to engineering surfaces by incorporating photocatalytic materials (TiO2 and Cu2O) at specific locations. Here, three distinct designs of micromotors (titania, hybrid‐1, and hybrid‐2) are presented that are programmed to showcase diverse behaviors of movements (linear, helical, and axial rotation) when exposed to a specific wavelength. The application of light facilitates convenient control over activity and mode switching by altering between UV and visible ranges. Numerical modeling using a finite element approach is performed to validate the experimental results, demonstrating excellent agreement with the experimental findings. The present study is anticipated to be helpful in tailoring such complex micro/nanoscale advanced functional materials with intricating swimming modes desired for various applications in micro/nanorobotics.

Abstract:Multimode stimuli-regulated propulsions are extremely useful for artificial micro-/nanomotors in performing specialized tasks in different microscopic environments. However, it is still a great challenge to develop a simple and efficient micro/nanosystem which can operate in complicated environments, either with fuel or without fuel. Here, we report a novel hybrid micromotor which only needs one metal with a special structure: micro-spherical shell with a hole. Since we attractively combine the inherently catalytic properties of Pt for chemical propulsion with a designed concave structure for acoustic propulsion, the micromotors can not only move rapidly in H 2 O 2 fueled environment due to the chemical reaction between Pt and H 2 O 2 but also can exhibit excellent acoustic propulsion in a fuel-free environment due to the non-uniform stress caused by ultrasound. In addition, the attractive group motion behavior of the motors, including aggregation, group migration, and dispersion, is easily realized by acoustic field regulation. The brand-new single-metal hybrid micromotors with a dual driving mode, flexible propulsion regulation, and efficient group motion regulation, which are essential for making micro-/nanomotors compatible with different surrounding environments, are expected to advance the field of artificial nanomachines.

Prevention of vertical transmission of hepatitis B

Abstract:Many chronic carriers of hepatitis B virus acquire the infection from their mothers at birth; the risk is greatest if the mother either has acute hepatitis B or is a hepatitis Be antigen (HBeAg)‐positive HBsAg carrier, but there is some risk also to the infants of mothers who do not carry HBeAg. At The Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne, nearly 2% of women attending antenatal clinics are found to be carriers and, without immunization, approximately five infants per 1000 infants delivered (up to 15 infants annually) would also become carriers. Vertical transmission of hepatitis B can be prevented by a combination of passive and active immunization if infants at risk can be identified at or before birth. Routine screening for hepatitis B surface antigen in pregnant women is recommended, at least in institutions in which the patient population includes a high proportion of migrants, in whom the prevalence of hepatitis B carriage is relatively high.

Abstract:Untethered, magnetically driven microrobots have great potential in practical applications such as minimally invasive surgery. Microrods, also known as “nanowires,” are the most commonly used type of structure for microrobots due to the easy fabrication and promising functions. Driven by a uniform rotating magnetic field, microrods can perform a 2D movement with the assistance of a boundary surface, which severely limits the application of microrods in 3D spaces. Herein, an asymmetric structural design is proposed to construct rod‐shaped micropropellers that can achieve a surface‐free 3D propulsion. A theoretical model is formulated based on resistive force theory to investigate the dynamics of micropropellers. It is theoretically demonstrated and experimentally verified that the magnetic micropropeller can realize not only a 3D propulsion, but also multimodal locomotion to adapt to the environment. The work provides guidance for the design and optimization of autonomous micropropellers.

Abstract:Recently a significant amount of attention has been paid towards the development of man-made synthetic catalytic micro- and nanomotors that can mimic biological counterparts in terms of propulsion power, motion control, and speed. However, only a few applications of such self-propelled vehicles have been described. Here the magnetic control of self-propelled catalytic Ti/Fe/Pt rolled-up microtubes (microbots) that can be used to perform various tasks such as the selective loading, transportation, and delivery of microscale objects in a fluid is shown; for instance, it is demonstrated for polystyrene particles and thin metallic films ("nanoplates"). Microbots self-propel by ejecting microbubbles via a platinum catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. The fuel and surfactant concentrations are optimized obtaining a maximum speed of 275 mu m s(-1) (5.5 body lengths per second) at 15% of peroxide fuel. The microbots exert a force of around 3.77 pN when transporting a single 5 mu m diameter particle; evidencing a high propulsion power that allows for the transport of up to 60 microparticles. By the introduction of an Fe thin film into the rolled-up microtubes, their motion can be fully controlled by an external magnetic field.
Nanoscale Lamb Wave–driven Motors in Nonliquid Environments

Abstract:Achieving light-driven motions in nonliquid environments presents formidable challenges, because microsized objects experience strong dry adhesion and intend to be stuck to contact surfaces with great tenacity. Here, in air and vacuum, we show rotary locomotion of a micrometer-sized metal plate with ~30 nm thickness, revolving around a microfiber. This motor is powered by pulsed light guided into the fiber as a coordinated consequence of an optically excited Lamb wave on the plate and favorable configuration of plate-fiber geometry. The motor, actuated by designed light pulses, crawls stepwise with subnanometer locomotion resolution. Furthermore, we can control the rotation velocity and step resolution by varying the repetition rate and pulse power, respectively. A light-actuated micromirror scanning with 0.001° resolution is then demonstrated on the basis of this motor. It offers unprecedented application potential for integrated micro-opto-electromechanical systems, outer-space all-optical precision mechanics and controls, and laser scanning for miniature lidar systems.
Dendritic Janus Nanomotors with Precisely Modulated Coverages and their Effects on Propulsion.

Abstract:Asymmetric dual-function of Janus micro/nanoparticles that have different surface modifications, structures or material properties, are extremely promising as building blocks in constructing micro-/nanomotors. However, current synthesis strategies are usually lack of controlling the coverages of Janus micro/nanoparticles, which hinders in-depth researches of their effects on the performance of Janus nanomotors. This study demonstrates a versatile approach for fabrication of Janus dendritic porous silica nanomotors with precisely modulated coverages from 0 to 100% by controlling the embedded depth of aminopropyl-modified dendritic porous silica nanoparticles (DPSNs-NH2) with positive charges and subsequently adsorbing the oppositely charged Pt nanoparticles. The diffusion coefficients of DPSNs-NH2 with different coverages of Pt NPs are systematically investigated. The propulsion can be enhanced by the improvement of catalytic activity of DPSNs, and half-coated DPSNs-NH2 exhibit highest propulsion among DPSNs-NH2 with other coverages. More importantly, compared with solid silica nanospheres, the initial increase of the coverage of DPSNs-NH2 makes more enhancements to the motion performance，which can be used to optimize the relations between the propulsion velocity and loading efficiency of bovine serum albumin. This work paves the way to fabricate tunable multifunctional Janus micro/nanomotors for future advanced devices.
Self-Propelled Round-Trip Motion Of Janus Particles In Static Line Optical Tweezers

Abstract:Controlled propulsion of microparticles and micromachines in fluids could revolutionize many aspects of technology, such as biomedicine, microfluidics, micro-mechanics, optomechanics, and cell biology. We report the self-propelled cyclic round-trip motion of metallo-dielectric Janus particles in static line optical tweezers (LOT). The Janus particle is a 5 mu m-diameter polystyrene sphere half-coated with 3 nanometer thick gold film. Both experiment and theory show that this cyclic translational and rotational motion is a consequence of the collective and fine action of the gold-face orientation dependent propulsion optical force, the gradient optical force, and the spontaneous symmetry breaking induced optical torque in different regions of the LOT. This study indicates a novel way to propel and manipulate the mechanical motion of microscopic motors and machines wirelessly in fluid, air, or vacuum environments using a static optical field with a smartly designed non-uniform intensity profile allowing fully controlled momentum and angular momentum exchange between light and the particle.

Abstract:Janus nano/micromotors have been developed into various sizes, shapes, and functions for a blaze of applications especially in biomedical and environmental fields. Here, a fabrication method of Janus micromotors is reported by capping hydrogel microspheres with functional nanoparticles (NPs). Microspheres are prepared in droplet microfluidics relying on hydrogel polymerization to obtain spheres with diameters from 20 to 500 mu m. By solidifying a hydrogel layer onto microspheres, functional NPs of MnO2 (catalyst of H2O2), TiO2 (photocatalyst), and Fe3O4 (magnetic guidance) are adhered onto microspheres resulting in Janus micromotors revealing different functionalities. Dynamics of Janus micromotors (diameter around 250 mu m) are explored by analyzing their trajectories in terms of mean squared displacement when immersed in H2O2 solutions of different concentrations, illuminated by light and guided in an external magnetic field. TiO2 Janus micromotors perform well for water purification tasks as is exemplarily demonstrated with a degradation of Methylene Blue dye in water. The proposed fabrication method is versatile and enables to achieve adjustable coverage of a microsphere with NPs as well as to realize multifunctional Janus micromotors by adhering different NPs (e.g., MnO2 and Fe3O4) on a sphere. This method provides an attractive way to fabricate multifunctional Janus micromotors in a cost-effective manner for environmental applications.

Abstract:Light, as an external stimulus, is capable of driving the motion of micro/nanomotors (MNMs) with the advantages of reversible, wireless and remote manoeuvre on demand with excellent spatial and temporal resolution. This review focuses on the state-of-the-art light-driven MNMs, which are able to move in liquids or on a substrate surface by converting light energy into mechanical work. The general design strategies for constructing asymmetric fields around light-driven MNMs to propel themselves are introduced as well as the photoactive materials for light-driven MNMs, including photocatalytic materials, photothermal materials and photochromic materials. Then, the propulsion mechanisms and motion behaviors of the so far developed light-driven MNMs are illustrated in detail involving light-induced phoretic propulsion, bubble recoil and interfacial tension gradient, followed by recent progress in the light-driven movement of liquid crystalline elastomers based on light-induced deformation. An outlook is further presented on the future development of light-driven MNMs towards overcoming key challenges after summarizing the potential applications in biomedical, environmental and micro/nanoengineering fields.

Abstract:Inspired by natural mobile microorganisms, researchers have developed micro/nanomotors (MNMs) that can autonomously move by transducing different kinds of energies into kinetic energy. The rapid development of MNMs has created tremendous opportunities for biomedical fields including diagnostics, therapeutics, and theranostics. Although the great progress has been made in MNM research, at a fundamental level, the accepted propulsion mechanisms are still a controversial matter. In practical applications such as precision nanomedicine, the precise control of the motion, including the speed and directionality, of MNMs is also important, which makes advanced motion manipulation desirable. Very recently, diverse MNMs with different propulsion strategies, morphologies, sizes, porosities and chemical structures have been fabricated and applied for various uses. Herein, we thoroughly summarize the physical principles behind propulsion strategies, as well as the recent advances in motion manipulation methods and relevant biomedical applications of these MNMs. The current challenges in MNM research are also discussed. We hope this review can provide a bird's eye overview of the MNM research and inspire researchers to create novel and more powerful MNMs.
Self-Propelled Janus Microdimer Swimmers under a Rotating Magnetic Field

Abstract:Recent strides in micro- and nanofabrication technology have enabled researchers to design and develop new micro- and nanorobots for biomedicine and environmental monitoring. Due to its non-invasive remote actuation and convenient navigation abilities, magnetic propulsion has been widely used in micro- and nanoscale robotic systems. In this article, a highly efficient Janus microdimer swimmer propelled by a rotating uniform magnetic field was investigated experimentally and numerically. The velocity of the Janus microdimer swimmer can be modulated by adjusting the magnetic field frequency with a maximum speed of 133 μm·s−1 (≈13.3 body length s−1) at the frequency of 32 Hz. Fast and accurate navigation of these Janus microdimer swimmers in complex environments and near obstacles was also demonstrated. This efficient propulsion behavior of the new Janus microdimer swimmer holds considerable promise for diverse future practical applications ranging from nanoscale manipulation and assembly to nanomedicine.

Abstract:Scientists are exploring light-propelled micro/nanomotors for their potential applications and unique performance. Here, we have created match-like Janus nanomotors powered by visible/ near-infrared (NIR) light. These motors were fabricated from gold nanorod-titanium dioxide structure coated with a thermo-responsive polymer. The multi-segment metal nanorods (Au-Fe-Au) were fabricated using the porous anodic alumina (PAA) templates by electrodeposition method. The gold-iron oxide-gold nanorods were obtained after thermal annealing and dissolving the PAA membrane in a NaOH solution. The wet-chemistry method cultivated the titanium dioxide on both tips of the gold-iron oxide-gold nanorods. The Au nanorod@TiO 2 heterostructure was prepared by removing the iron oxide segment in a hydrochloric acid solution. The reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization was used to synthesize a thermo-responsive copolymer, N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-acrylamide. By reducing the RAFT agent residue, -SH groups were created at the end of each polymer chain, providing better conditions for coating the surface of the Au domain with thiolated copolymer. The motion of Janus nanorods was studied using varying monochromatically visible and NIR lights that lead to the self-electrophoresis mechanism. Optical microscopy data revealed that the Janus nanomotors can move within the wavelength range of visible and NIR light. The nanomotors' motion velocity increased with an increase in light intensity.
