Abstract:We give a ranker-based description using finite-index congruences for the variety $\boldsymbol{\mathrm{DAb}}$ of finite monoids whose regular $\mathcal{D}$-classes form Abelian groups. This combinatorial description yields a normal form for general pseudowords over $\boldsymbol{\mathrm{DAb}}$. For $(\omega - 1)$-terms, this normal form is computable, which yields an algorithm for the word problem for $(\omega - 1)$-terms of $\boldsymbol{\mathrm{DAb}}$.

Abstract:We survey recent results on the topological complexity of context-free omega-languages which form the second level of the Chomsky hierarchy of languages of infinite words. In particular, we consider the Borel hierarchy and the Wadge hierarchy of non-deterministic or deterministic context-free omega-languages. We study also decision problems, the links with the notions of ambiguity and of degrees of ambiguity, and the special case of omega-powers.

Abstract:An \omega-grammar is a formal grammar used to generate \omega-words (i.e. infinite length words), while an \omega-automaton is an automaton used to recognize \omega-words. This paper gives clean and uniform definitions for \omega-grammars and \omega-automata, provides a systematic study of the generative power of \omega-grammars with respect to \omega-automata, and presents a complete set of results for various types of \omega-grammars and acceptance modes. We use the tuple (\sigma,\rho,\pi) to denote various acceptance modes, where \sigma denotes that some designated elements should appear at least once or infinitely often, \rho denotes some binary relation between two sets, and \pi denotes normal or leftmost derivations. Technically, we propose (\sigma,\rho,\pi)-accepting \omega-grammars, and systematically study their relative generative power with respect to (\sigma,\rho)-accepting \omega-automata. We show how to construct some special forms of \omega-grammars, such as \epsilon-production-free \omega-grammars. We study the equivalence or inclusion relations between \omega$-grammars and \omega-automata by establishing the translation techniques. In particular, we show that, for some acceptance modes, the generative power of \omega-CFG is strictly weaker than \omega-PDA, and the generative power of \omega-CSG is equal to \omega-TM (rather than linear-bounded \omega-automata-like devices). Furthermore, we raise some remaining open problems for two of the acceptance modes.

Abstract:We provide a graph formula which describes an arbitrary monomial in {\omega} classes (also referred to as stable {\psi} classes) in terms of a simple family of dual graphs (pinwheel graphs) with edges decorated by rational functions in {\psi} classes. We deduce some numerical consequences and in particular a combinatorial formula expressing top intersections of \k{appa} classes on Mg in terms of top intersections of {\psi} classes.
Regular omega-Languages with an Informative Right Congruence

Abstract:A regular language is almost fully characterized by its right congruence relation. Indeed, a regular language can always be recognized by a DFA isomorphic to the automaton corresponding to its right congruence, henceforth the Rightcon automaton. The same does not hold for regular omega-languages. The right congruence of a regular omega-language is not informative enough; many regular omega-languages have a trivial right congruence, and in general it is not always possible to define an omega-automaton recognizing a given language that is isomorphic to the rightcon automaton. The class of weak regular omega-languages does have an informative right congruence. That is, any weak regular omega-language can always be recognized by a deterministic Büchi automaton that is isomorphic to the rightcon automaton. Weak regular omega-languages reside in the lower levels of the expressiveness hierarchy of regular omega-languages. Are there more expressive sub-classes of regular omega languages that have an informative right congruence? Can we fully characterize the class of languages with a trivial right congruence? In this paper we try to place some additional pieces of this big puzzle.

Symbolic Automata: $ω$-Regularity Modulo Theories

Abstract:Symbolic automata are finite state automata that support potentially infinite alphabets, such as the set of rational numbers, generally applied to regular expressions/languages over finite words. In symbolic automata (or automata modulo theories), an alphabet is represented by an effective Boolean algebra, supported by a decision procedure for satisfiability. Regular languages over infinite words (so called $\omega$-regular languages) have a rich history paralleling that of regular languages over finite words, with well known applications to model checking via Büchi automata and temporal logics. We generalize symbolic automata to support $\omega$-regular languages via symbolic transition terms and symbolic derivatives, bringing together a variety of classic automata and logics in a unified framework that provides all the necessary ingredients to support symbolic model checking modulo $A$, $NBW_A$. In particular, we define: (1) alternating Büchi automata modulo $A$, $ABW_A$ as well (non-alternating) non-deterministic Büchi automata modulo $A$, $NBW_A$; (2) an alternation elimination algorithm that incrementally constructs an $NBW_A$ from an $ABW_A$, and can also be used for constructing the product of two $NBW_A$'s; (3) a definition of linear temporal logic (LTL) modulo $A$ that generalizes Vardi's construction of alternating Büchi automata from LTL, using (2) to go from LTL modulo $A$ to $NBW_A$ via $ABW_A$. Finally, we present a combination of LTL modulo $A$ with extended regular expressions modulo $A$ that generalizes the Property Specification Language (PSL). Our combination allows regex complement, that is not supported in PSL but can be supported naturally by using symbolic transition terms.

Abstract:The authors derive a linear ODE (ordinary differential equation) whose particular solution is the Butzer–Flocke–Hauss complete real-parameter Omega function Ω(w), which is associated with the complex-index Bernoulli function Bα(z) and with the complex-index Euler function Eα(z). This is accomplished here with the aid of an integral representation of the alternating Mathieu series S˜(w). A new integral representation and some two-sided bounding inequalities are also given for the Omega function.

Abstract:In the context of two-player games over graphs, a language $L$ is called positional if, in all games using $L$ as winning objective, the protagonist can play optimally using positional strategies, that is, strategies that do not depend on the history of the play. In this work, we describe the class of parity automata recognising positional languages, providing a complete characterisation of positionality for $\omega$-regular languages. As corollaries, we establish decidability of positionality in polynomial time, finite-to-infinite and 1-to-2-players lifts, and show the closure under union of prefix-independent positional objectives, answering a conjecture by Kopczyński in the $\omega$-regular case.

Natural Colors of Infinite Words

Abstract:While finite automata have minimal DFAs as a simple and natural normal form, deterministic omega-automata do not currently have anything similar. One reason for this is that a normal form for omega-regular languages has to speak about more than acceptance - for example, to have a normal form for a parity language, it should relate every infinite word to some natural color for this language. This raises the question of whether or not a concept such as a natural color of an infinite word (for a given language) exists, and, if it does, how it relates back to automata. We define the natural color of a word purely based on an omega-regular language, and show how this natural color can be traced back from any deterministic parity automaton after two cheap and simple automaton transformations. The resulting streamlined automaton does not necessarily accept every word with its natural color, but it has a 'co-run', which is like a run, but can once move to a language equivalent state, whose color is the natural color, and no co-run with a higher color exists. The streamlined automaton defines, for every color c, a good-for-games co-Büchi automaton that recognizes the words whose natural colors w.r.t. the represented language are at least c. This provides a canonical representation for every $\omega$-regular language, because good-for-games co-Büchi automata have a canonical minimal (and cheap to obtain) representation for every co-Büchi language.

Abstract:Background:: The degree sequence of a graph is the list of its vertex degrees arranged in usually increasing order. Many properties of the graphs realized from a degree sequence can be deduced by means of a recently introduced graph invariant called omega invariant. Methods:: We used the definitions of the considered graph products together with the list of de-gree sequences of these graph products for some well-know graph classes. Naturally, the vertex degree and edge degree partitions are used. As the main theme of the paper is the omega invari-ant, we frequently used the definition and fundamental properties of this very new invariant for our calculations. Also, some algebraic properties of these products are deduced in line with some recent publications following the same fashion Results:: In this paper, we determine the degree sequences of strong and lexicographic products of two graphs and obtain the general form of the degree sequences of both products. We obtain a general formula for the omega invariant of strong and lexicographic products of two graphs. The algebraic structures of strong and lexicographic products are obtained. Moreover, we prove that strong and lexicographic products are not distributive over each other Conclusion:: We have obtained the general expression for degree sequences of two important products of graphs and a general expression for omega invariants of strong and lexicographic products. Furthermore, we have obtained algebraic structures of strong and lexicographic prod-ucts in terms of their degree sequences. Also, it has been found that the disruptive property does not hold for strong and lexicographic products.

Effective powers of $ω$ over $Δ_2$ cohesive sets and infinite $Π_1$ sets without $Δ_2$ cohesive subsets

Abstract:A cohesive power of a computable structure is an effective ultrapower where a cohesive set acts as an ultrafilter. Let $\omega$, $\zeta$, and $\eta$ denote the respective order-types of the natural numbers, the integers, and the rationals. We study cohesive powers of computable copies of $\omega$ over $\Delta_2$ cohesive sets. We show that there is a computable copy $\mathcal{L}$ of $\omega$ such that, for every $\Delta_2$ cohesive set $C$, the cohesive power of $\mathcal{L}$ over $C$ has order-type $\omega + \eta$. This improves an earlier result of Dimitrov, Harizanov, Morozov, Shafer, A. Soskova, and Vatev by generalizing from $\Sigma_1$ cohesive sets to $\Delta_2$ cohesive sets and by computing a single copy of $\omega$ that has the desired cohesive power over all $\Delta_2$ cohesive sets. Furthermore, our result is optimal in the sense that $\Delta_2$ cannot be replaced by $\Pi_2$. More generally, we show that if $X \subseteq \mathbb{N} \setminus \{0\}$ is a Boolean combination of $\Sigma_2$ sets, thought of as a set of finite order-types, then there is a computable copy $\mathcal{L}$ of $\omega$ where the cohesive power of $\mathcal{L}$ over any $\Delta_2$ cohesive set has order-type $\omega + \sigma(X \cup \{\omega + \zeta\eta + \omega^*\})$. If $X$ is finite and non-empty, then there is also a computable copy $\mathcal{L}$ of $\omega$ where the cohesive power of $\mathcal{L}$ over any $\Delta_2$ cohesive set has order-type $\omega + \sigma(X)$. An unexpected byproduct of our work is a new method for constructing infinite $\Pi_1$ sets that do not have $\Delta_2$ cohesive subsets. In fact, we construct an infinite $\Pi_1$ set that does not have a $\Delta_2$ p-cohesive subset. Infinite $\Pi_1$ sets without $\Delta_2$ r-cohesive subsets generalize D. Martin's classic co-infinite c.e. set with no maximal superset and have appeared in the work of Lerman, Shore, and Soare.

On the $D_ω$-classical orthogonal polynomials

Abstract:We wish to investigate the $D_{\omega}$-classical orthogonal polynomials, where $D_{\omega}$ is a special case of the Hahn operator. For this purpose, we consider the problem of finding all sequences of orthogonal polynomials such that their $D_{\omega}$-derivatives are also orthogonal polynomials. To solve this problem we adopt a different approach to those employed in this topic. We first begin by determining the coefficients involved in their recurrence relations, and then providing an exhaustive list of all solutions. When $\omega=0$, we rediscover the classical orthogonal polynomials of Hermite, Laguerre, Bessel and Jacobi. For $\omega=1$, we encounter the families of discrete classical orthogonal polynomials as particular cases.

Monomial identities in the Weyl algebra

Abstract:Motivated by a question and some enumerative conjectures of Richard Stanley, we explore the equivalence classes of words in the Weyl algebra, $\mathbf{k} \left< D,U \mid DU - UD = 1 \right>$. We show that each class is generated by the swapping of adjacent *balanced subwords*, i.e., those which have the same number of $D$'s as $U$'s, and give several other characterizations. Armed with this we deduce a number of enumerative results about the number of such equivalence classes and their sizes. We extend these results to the class of $c$-Dyck words, where every prefix has at least $c$ times as many $U$'s as $D$'s. We also connect these results to previous work on bond percolation and rook theory, and generalize them to some other algebras.

Abstract:$\Omega$-automata and Wilke algebras are formalisms for characterising $\omega$-regular languages via their ultimately periodic words. $\Omega$-automata read finite representations of ultimately periodic words, called lassos, and they are a subclass of lasso automata. We introduce lasso semigroups as a generalisation of Wilke algebras that mirrors how lasso automata generalise $\Omega$-automata, and we show that finite lasso semigroups characterise regular lasso languages. We then show a dual adjunction between lasso automata and quotients of the free lasso semigroup with a recognising set, and as our main result we show that this dual adjunction restricts to one between $\Omega$-automata and quotients of the free Wilke algebra with a recognising set.
